Troy Deeney snatched an 89th-minute equaliser in a friendly between Watford Reserves and Fulham’s second string on Tuesday.

Fulham used the friendly at Motspur Park to aid Andrew Johnson’s recovery from injury and the side also included USA international Eddie Johnson and Swedish forward David Elm.

Watford named a strong line-up and almost took the lead when Matthew Whichelow, who scored his debut goal for the first team on Saturday, hit the woodwork after a quarter of an hour.

However, Andrew Johnson broke the deadlock five minutes later with a neat finish from seven yards out after a flick by Lauri Dalla Valle.

Johnson and Marcello Trotta both went close to doubling Fulham’s lead either side of half time but despite struggling to create many chances in the second half, Deeney managed to grab a late equaliser when he headed in a diagonal cross.

While the Reserves were facing Fulham, Academy goalkeeper Jonathan Bond was making two penalty saves to help Watford Under-18s record a 1-0 victory over Derby County.

Bond, who was called into the full Wales squad during the last international break, denied Derby striker Callum Ball with penalty saves in both halves to ensure Sean Murray handed the Hornets victory.

Derby will believe they deserved more from the contest after Ball also hit the post twice and the Rams had kept a clean sheet until midfielder Jeff Hendrick was forced in goal due to injury.

Watford squad: Gilmartin, Bonham, Thompson, Bennett, Kiernan, Brislen-Hall (trialist from Arsenal, since returned to the Gunners), Aldred, Isaac, Assombalonga, Buckley, Walker, Jenkins, Mingoia, Deeney, Whichelow.
