Watford have helped secure a Government grant of more than £4m to transform a run-down youth centre into a ‘world-class community facility’.

For more than two years, the Watford FC’s Community Sports and Education Trust has worked with the London Borough of Harrow to prepare an application for Cedars Youth Centre and open space in Harrow.

A joint working party made up of staff from the two organisations made a successful application for Government funding and work has already started on the ‘My Place - Harrow’ site.

Cedars Youth Centre, which will be demolished as part of the plans, played home to one of Watford Trust’s first social inclusion ventures into the Harrow districts; ‘Kickz’, in the winter of 2006. Anti-social behaviour in the area was reduced by 25 per cent as a result.

Rob Smith, the Hornets’ community director, said: “The Community Trust – through (head of community development) Neil Hart’s determination and perseverance in particular – is hoping to help create something special for the future in the Harrow area.”

Councillor Mitzi Green, portfolio holder for Children’s Services at Harrow Council, added: “This is excellent news for people of all ages in Harrow Weald but in particular a huge boost for young people in the area.

“Watford FC have done an amazing job and I’d like to pass on our thanks for their hard work and dedication.

“Residents have played a key role, working with the council and Watford FC to design this world-class youth and community facility and we’re thrilled that we can get on with the construction.

“As well as delivering state-of-the-art sports facilities ahead of the London Olympics, this centre will offer space for arts, music and IT. There really will be something for everyone.”
