Watford manager Sean Dyche believes his side deserved a point at Doncaster Rovers but did accept they lacked quality going forward.

The Hornets created a few good chances in an open and attacking first half but in the second period, his side became more solid and rarely carried a threat.

“I think it was a deserved point, without us playing as well as we have done recently,” Dyche said.

“We had solid shape, good organisation and good endeavour but we lacked that bit of quality. We worked hard for the point.

“We are still developing and improving so it will be difficult to be brilliant every week. We have delivered some really good performances though.

“We come away reasonably positive. The back five were really good and that was important as it is important to set our stall out in terms of the basics and fundamentals.”

When asked if they attempted to shut up shop in the second half, Dyche replied: “Well if we did then it wasn't intentional. It was just that moment of quality we have shown lately wasn't there and sometimes that happens.

“The pleasing thing for me was that when it doesn't happen then you need to be able to rely on the key fundamentals – the shape, the basics, the energy and effort of the team – and I think that showed in abundance today.”

This afternoon was Watford's third clean sheet in four matches – with the Hornets conceding once at Middlesbrough.

On his side's new-found resilience, Dyche said: “It is important to build at both ends and we have affected both ends quite well in the last four or five games. We have scored goals and looked more solid as a team.

“We are pleased in a different way today because we are pleased with the tactical organisation, pleased with the effort and pleased with the endeavour. We just lack that quality you need to win football matches but we have shown that a lot lately.

“We are a working progress. We try to deliver as often as we can but we are still working on being consistent.”
