Watford boss sensed his side may under-perform at Crystal Palace

Watford manager Sean Dyche said he had a feeling his side would under-perform prior to Saturday’s disappointing 4-0 defeat to Crystal Palace.

The Hornets were disappointing as they slumped to defeat at Selhurst Park, conceding four very poor goals.

Watford had taken ten points from a possible 12 going into the contest whereas Palace were in search of their first league win of 2012 and Dyche believes the opposition wanted it more.

He said: “It was a team who haven’t won all year against a team who have been on a fantastic run and found it tough to go again.

“After two really tough, emotional games against Forest - for obvious reasons - and a fantastic turnaround to beat Leicester, I thought we were a bit flat and I sensed it before the game.

“Sometimes it is hard to get them out of that mode and get them started and I thought that was how it played out.

“They were more eager and more desperate for their first win of 2012.”

When asked why he felt his players may under-perform, Dyche replied: “It is just a feeling you get when you have been in the game forever. I feel like I was born in football.

“You just get a sense and it is hard to break them out of it because sometimes you get it wrong and you can over-egg it so you don’t want to build it up too much.

“We tried to make sure the mentality was right because we are a strong group mentally and obviously that has carried us well, building from an awkward start to the season.

“That is a real reminder for us without taking anything away from Palace, because they were up for it today with the way they played and the manner they went about the win.”

The victory over Leicester City the Tuesday before moved Watford 15 points clear of the relegation places but Dyche does not believe that was a factor.

He said: “I don’t think so because we spoke about going again before the game and spoke all week about it because sometimes there is the mentality of ‘o well we have been on a good run and maybe we can just come off it a bit’.

“We spoke about making sure that didn’t affect us and words are sometimes easy and we didn’t deliver it.

“After a soft first goal, it changed the feel of the game because we started okay without being sharp. If Craig Forsyth’s shot had gone in then it would have changed the feel but they were good value for the win. “ Watford have tightened up at the back this season and have defended well at set pieces – which was a real problem in recent years.

However, on Saturday three of the goals came from set pieces.

Dyche said: “We have done really well on set pieces - both scoring and not conceding - and that is disappointing; the nature of the goals but every goal is disappointing.”

He continued: “I didn’t think we were our usual selves full stop. It wasn’t just about the nature of the goals; it was about the general feel about the group.

“But this is the same group who have been absolutely immense all season. I think it is our fifth loss in 20 games so we are not scratching our heads wondering where it has all gone wrong.

“We know what we are about and we know where we are going. I said to the lads that this is just a really good reminder that if you come away from your performance levels by just five or ten per cent then you will be punished and today we were unfortunately about 20 per cent below our normal level.”

Would have been nice of him to let us know before the game so I didn't have to bother to go there and pay to watch that rubbish.

If he had, that might have been just the incentive they needed to prove him wrong!

Good point, send a letter to SD and ask for free entrance to the next game see what happens and let us all know.

Four players I don't want in the team for the following season;

Loach Doyley and Iwelumo, Gilmartin (was awful playing for Crawly) nice guys and all that - this is not personal.Although that being said these guys owe the team and fans to finish well for the rest of the season.

We need a quality goalkeeper and top striker on loan for rest of the season.

The team is coming together very nicely. Pity we never got Jordan Mutch permanently, for me he was man of the match at Chelsea on Saturday.

Very impressed with Birmingham's keeper reckon we would be in play off position had he been Watford goalkeeper this season.

Players that should not be in the team now never mind next season Doyley well just Doyley really !! agree need a striker on loan Iwelumo is only playing because there is no other choice with Deeney is injured but how many goals will he score. If you want Loach dropped then there must be a keeper brought in on Loan !!!!

Perhaps S.D can tell us what his thoughts are for the Southampton match. If it's as negative as the Crystal Palace game then lets all save ourselves some money and not bother going. If as he said he felt the team was a bit flat before the match then he alone should have the ability to lift the players and install the will to win, which it was quite obvious this didn't happen.

Yes, Saturday's result was entirely down to Loach (have you seen the so-called 'marking' for the goals?), Iwelumo (no service and Garner/Hogg/Eustace anonymous in the final third so essentially playing on his own) and Forsyth (OK, fair enough it wasn't his best game).

How's about instead of jumping on the boo-boys' bandwagon and berating players that are getting paid 25% of what the rest of the division are on, you actually show up to games with your eyes open and start being a supporter?

Oh and Doyley on his wrong foot is twice the defender Dickinson is. Sure, going forward he is pretty terrible (although I'd put this down to a lack of confidence amongst the VR groans). He can fist-pump all he likes but when your LB's concentration levels are that of a toddler you will always concede at the back post.

As i said on another thread on this site yesterday sd talked the team up way too much on friday and this has happened before and the team have underperformed.Iagre
e that if he felt the vibes before the game he should have said right you lot are paying compo to the travelling fans and that might have changed the mood.Sd has brought me round but this statement is complete pony.Act with a bit of proffesionalisim and keep your praise till after the event. And for gods sake get rid of that useless exuse of a footballer up front. No need for names

Saw the game and anyone defending Iwelumo's performance is quite frankly blind. If the ball doesn't drop directly onto his forehead he hasn't got a hope and even if it does there's no guarantee he'll put it in a useful place. Point about the gap between midfield and the forwards is a fair one but also doesn't add up to 'target man' Iwelumo being in the starting line up.

On his wrong foot?! That's both of them. One on one I admit he is excellent but that's it. Often caught out of position. Look at the chances at Forest for Gunter. All of them where Doyley should have been. Passing dreadful. Somebody obviously told him he had a long throw because all he does it launch it as far as he can. Heading, much like the kicking can go anywhere.
Big Chris offers us nothing. I have rarely seen a player offer so little and should now play no further part. We have Whichelow and Massey along with Garner (jury out there as well) and Deeney. We should try these players out as they are the future and not Chris who I imagine will leave in the summer on a free.
Loach could do with a breather and an experienced GK on loan for just 1 month would help. Still believe he has talent.

I think there are some good ideas in this post, but I would disagree on a couple of points.

The problem is that with Deeney out if we don't play CI then we are stuck with no aerial threat whatsoever. I know that works well at Barcelona but er !!!

The argument for a striker on loan has diminished with the recent points haul, unless we can get someone in with a view to a posisble season long loan next term.

I agree that when Deeney returns we should give Massey some game time either from the start or as a sub.

Also agree with Doyley assessment. We should work hard on Dickinson -he has got a good natural left foot ( 2 excellent goals !) but lacks positional sense. Opportunity now ( or soon ) for an extended run with little pressure.

Not worth the leaving Loach out unless it is to give Bond a run. Next season another thing entirely.

Sean just being a bit too honest about his gut feeling re the Palace game. As manager he's supposed to wave a magic wand but sometimes we get beat by a team with more desire. I think he's a better manager than Mackay who had Danny Graham & Marvin all last season yet still struggled quite abysmally by this stage of the season.

Doyleys defending is poor
Loach was to blame for two of Saturdays goals, but he wasn't helped by defending
Ilewumo, . Worse forward ever and I saw the likes of Morrissey, Pritchett, Quinn etc
Play our youngsters, at the very least when we are safe.

If Ross Wilson is as good as Graham Taylor says he is then on the surface it's difficult to see how on earth we could have signed Iwelimu.
His scoring record for us is virtually non existent and yet I noticed recently that in four of his last five seasons he has scored a minimum of 10 goals.
I remember when he came off he bench for Burnley shaker us he looked a real handful.
So I wonder if his legs/spring have gone this season or is he just playing badly? Based on what we are seeing currently I have to agree that he should leave in the summer.

Is it just me getting old and miserable?
I've just been reading about managers being sacked and then getting back on the merry go round to be appointed at another club a week or two later. The same old faces going round and round.

Then I read a few of the administrator comments about the way Portsmouth have been run, including th fact that one of their players has a £30k a week contract.
What will happen? Just the usual I expect---- they will arrange a company voluntary agreement when the poor companies that were stupid enough to trade with a football club will get something pathetic like 20p in the pound and then the club will carry on being just as negligent as they were before.
Sickening! Why on earth do we all continue to support our respective clubs? is it some form of tribal addiction?

I have concerns about Lloyd but still think he is currently our best left back.
I think I would follow Lutondown's advice and try to sign Paul Robinson (provided we can afford him) for the rest of the season.
I would then sell Dickinson and Lloyd in the summer and buy a younger player from a lower division, thats assuming Robbo didnt fancy a couple of years here before he retires.
We could even give Forsyth a game or two there because he has apparently played there before. A little extra height
at the back post when we are defending
would be no bad thing.

Malcolm Poskett was a great signing/player. He scored numerous goals and worked his butt off tracking back. I remember one scored against West Ham in the days of Frank Lampard Snr and Alan Devonshire at el, when Callaghan crossed from the right and Posskett was on his knees on the penalty spot and headed home. Now Trevor Senior, he was something else. Played really well for Reading but was pants for us. I think he scored one goal in a cup game at Coventry?

Never will forget that, and never would that happen now... but as for Cliff .. yeah on the whole,. you're probably right ...
