Southampton's Rickie Lambert sinks Watford

Lambert at the treble as Hornets well beaten
Rickie Lambert’s third hat-trick of the season fired Southampton back to the top of the Championship as a poor Watford were comfortably beaten 3-0 at Vicarage Road.
The Hornets changed goalkeepers for the game but the fourth man to take his place between the posts for them this season, Tomasz Kuszczak, was at fault for the first goal when Lambert headed the visitors into a 13th-minute lead.
He doubled his tally nine minutes later before wrapping up his good afternoon’s work from the penalty spot after the break.
Watford struggled to get going from the whistle and once their opponents had taken command by midway through the first half, they rarely looked like relinquishing their grip on the contest against a side who did not manage an on-target attempt until the last minute of normal time.
Sean Dyche’s response to last week’s disappointing defeat at Crystal Palace was to make five changes, although at least one was enforced.
As expected, Kuszczak replaced Scott Loach in goal, while the Hornets’ second loan signing of the week, Marcello Trotta, also made his debut. With Troy Deeney fit to return, this meant both Chris Iwelumo and Joe Garner dropped to the bench.
Elsewhere, Mark Yeates and Carl Dickinson returned to the starting line-up for the first time since the 3-0 defeat at Birmingham City as Lee Hodson was ill but Craig Forsyth was left out of the matchday squad. Gavin Massey was also not involved in the 16 due to injury.
Despite beating Derby County 4-0 last time out, Nigel Adkins still opted to make two changes to his side, with Danny Butterfield coming in for Dan Harding and Tadanari Lee replacing Billy Sharp. Former Hornets loanee Jack Cork was in the starting line-up but David Connolly had to settle for a place among the replacements.
After a scrappy start to the game in which neither side could retain possession for any length of time, the hosts had the first sight of an opening when a lofted Nyron Nosworthy pass threatened to put Deeney in but keeper Kelvin Davis was alert to the danger and cleared.
But it was Southampton who drew first blood in the 13th minute, with Kuszczak’s first meaningful involvement in a yellow shirt far from auspicious.
There didn’t appear to be too much danger when Butterfield floated in a cross from the right but the on-loan Manchester United keeper came off his line for a ball that he had no real need to come for, or hope of getting. But he then stopped and found himself completely stranded in no man’s land as Lambert’s header looped over him for his 21st of the campaign to give Saints a 1-0 lead.
Kuszczak dealt far better with Adam Lallana’s shot soon after before the hosts had their first attempt when Jonathan Hogg fired well over from the edge of the area after Nosworthy hadn’t been too far away from connecting with the first corner of the match, delivered by Yeates from the right.
The Hornets had still not got going though, when their task became even harder in the 22nd minute.
This time the Saints built patiently before Lallana received the ball towards the left side of the area and laid it back to Lambert, who confidently dispatched a superb first-time right-footed finish past the helpless Kuszczak for his and Southampton’s second.
Lallana’s game was to last just eight more minutes though, before he went off injured and was replaced by Jason Puncheon.
Watford continued to look disjointed and sluggish but they nearly created a chance in the 35th minute when Alex Kacaniklic tricked his way past Butterfield and then accelerated down the left before sending over a decent-looking cross but it was beyond any of his team-mates in the middle.
That opening apart, Dyche’s men rarely threatened their opponents, who went into the break comfortably in command.
Watford would have been hoping to make a positive start to the second half but they really should have been three down within three minutes of the restart.
This time Richard Chaplow was the supplier with a deep cross from the right, which Lambert knocked down to the unmarked Lee, who should have hit the target from eight yards but sliced his left-footed strike wide of Kuszczak’s right-hand post.
Morgan Schneiderlin fired an effort from much further out wide soon after before Jos Hooiveld was the first player to be booked for a foul on John Eustace.
But from the resultant free-kick, Watford might have halved the deficit were it not for some poor communication when, after Yeates had crossed deep and Deeney headed back across goal, Eustace headed wide when Trotta was better placed behind him.
Trotta’s debut came to an end on the hour when he made way for Garner, with the home side starting to ask a few attacking questions, although they had still yet to muster an attempt on target.
Deeney was the next to try his luck with a side-foot volley over the top from Kacaniklic’s pull back from the right before Puncheon, who had been booked moments before for kicking the ball away, fired high and wide at the other end.
But Southampton made certain of the points with the penalty spot 18 minutes from time, ironically after a great save by Kuszczak.
The keeper did very well to keep out an effort from Lee, who had opened up a clear-cut opportunity after capitalising on a lapse by Adrian Mariappa, but the ball then bounced up and as the Saints striker sought to get there before Kuszczak, he was clumsily bundled over by Dickinson.
There was never any doubt who was going to take the spot-kick and Lambert made no mistake, slamming the ball high to Kuszczak’s right to complete his hat-trick and make it 3-0.
After Adkins had made his second change, with Dean Hammond coming on for Chaplow, Dyche followed suit as Kacaniklic made way for Iwelumo.
The substitutions continued as Prince Buaben came on for Yeates before a large number of those left in the Rookery subjected Connolly to a predictably abusive reception when he replaced Lambert.
Watford might have pulled back a late consolation when Deeney’s cross from the right was met by the diving Garner, whose effort was the first on target for the hosts but it struck a defender, as the Rookery appealed for a penalty.
Southampton might have added a delightful fourth deep into injury time when Cork was played on the left side of the area and he tried to clip the ball into the far corner, but the shot dropped wide.
Watford: Kuszczak; Doyley, Nosworthy, Mariappa, Dickinson; Yeates (Buaben 83), Eustace, Hogg, Kacaniklic (Iwelumo 79); Deeney, Trotta (Garner 60). Not used: Loach; and Bennett.
Southampton: Davis; Butterfield, Fonte, Hooiveld, Fox; Chaplow (Hammond 77), Cork, Schneiderlin, Lallana (Puncheon 30); Lambert (Connolly 83), Lee. Not used: Sharp and Connolly.
Bookings: Hooiveld for a foul on Eustace (54); Puncheon for dissent (66).
Attendance: 13,424.
Referee: Tony Bates.

hope this is not a familiar pattern for the rest of season.Okay so Southampton are a top of the table team and playing with a winning mentality, but its not too much to expect to at least get at them, put two passes together and get their keeper off his deck chair !! sorry for thomas, it was a bad decision he wanted to put a marker down ! he certainly did that. Oh well keep yer heads up !.

We will not go down this season, in fact we probably only need 2 or 3 more points to be safe(thankfully and incredibly there are 3 worse teams than us!) However, everyone at WFC must now make sure that this season does not end as weakly as the last 2 seasons. On the pitch, we should use the remaining games to play players who will play a part next season, including our own youngsters. Ross Wilson and dyche must immediately start targeting better players ready for next season. We have some cash, spend it wisely and give us some hope for a season of more than just survival. Off the pitch bass must now show actions not just talk. I want to see a new pitch, a re-opened red lion and a re-opened Harrys bar and the east stand knocked down by the start of august. The plans for next season must start now otherwise we will lose more and more fans who are fed up of empty words, lack of action and starting every season with no ambition. I also don't want to hear anymore talk of 'lack of redources' if GT and boothroyd had taken that attitude we would never have played in the top flight. A massive 5 months ahead for WFC.
As for today an embarresing performance, Dychie i have praised you recently but i am afraid that just is not good enough, no effort, no passion, no organisation and certainly no goal threat , the sight of you bringing the awful Garner and iwelumo on summed it up for me , but suppose as YOUR signings you have too , last two games 7 conceeded NONE scored and no points massive kick up the ar*e needed and quick !

Going down 1-0 so early in the game puts everyone on a downer. Being on a downer against a top club like the saints leads to big scorelines...
Why drop Scott? Isnt it obvious its the defenders not giving the keeper enough support. I think most people are just following the crowd and going against Scott when that was the last thing he needed. The club is a shambles at the moment. Sort it out!!

He performed well for the rest of the match, the second goal he was unsighted (I think) and it was a hot shot in any case and the penalty was not a penalty. At least we didn't all **** ourselves every time the ball was passed back to him....
It was so dire and the Rookery ( and I was in it ) so indifferent that Harry the Hornet threw his toys out of the pram and stormed off mid way through the 1st half!!!

What really peed me off today was that we couldn't string more than two passes together and we kept lumping it up to a well organised defence who never really looked in trouble against us. And to make things worse we kept doing it over and over again with no change of tactics from the sidelines.
We've turned ourselves over today against an average looking side.
Still at least "we've learnt fom last weeks experiences at Crystal Palace" Another SD gem!
I'm really clutching at straws here but didn't Tony Coton have a mare on his debut?

I think it's fair to say we were cr@p all over today. TK dropped one big time for the first. The second was a good finish into the bottom corner, I think it's more of a question as to why the defence allowed him time to have a punt rather than blame TK. And you can't really blame a keeper for not saving a penalty.

Deany didn't look fit and Trotta didn;t get a decent ball all game. Eustace tried his best but we missed any creativity in midfield. Without Beauben or Murray we will just lump the ball forward , usually straight down the keepers throat. As for the first goal ,yes the new keeper made a mistake but Nosworthy was out jumped far to easilly. Still think T.K will prove to be a very good signing.

I thought the pitch was the worse it has been so far and I agree that we probably won't see anymore decent football this season.
The error for the first goal was dissapointing but at least we saw some intelligent distribution from the GK.
The forwards generally were pretty ineffective so much so that I was almost pleased to see Ewelumo come on.
Today we were back to the sort of midfield performances that originally made us think Hogg and Eustace couldn't play together.
Dickinson provided his usual weak frenetic performance and Yeates seemed even more confused than I was.

I just hope that when we are safe, perhaps we will get to see some of the youngsters given a go, and if not why not.

One game win or lose does not necessarily set a season though I found Sean programmes notes laughable today ,
the new mod com audio system most probably purchased from ----Market ,the quality being poor .
The performance was poor just basically hoofing the ball with an occasional cross from the wing .
As a whole the odd game aside I have just not enjoyed this season and frankly Iam just coming bored with this all
Thick and thin is all well and good but when I see poor performances with BSE about positivity in the camp in a difficult economic climate I am sure my money can be spent better elsewhere
Losing to Southampton is no disgrace but the manner of the loss is .

I would also like to say that the way you debated your view was exactly the way it should be done, there was no sniping at other posters, no personal attacks on the players or owners and someone just giving an honest opinion on how he sees it!!!! Not everyone will agree with your comments, but that is what a debate should be about and a difference of opinion is what makes it more fun! Got to admit I Have been guilty of going to far on occasions but to be honest most of my comments r supposed to be tongue in cheek to get a rise out of people that sometimes get too emotional and too personal !!!! However most people just want to have a good debate so I will do my best to rise above it and just comment on the article (not promising tho as I quite enjoy it sometimes!! Especially with my good friend Lutondown)
Let's hope this mini slump is over for next Saturday, anyway I am now off to watch my 2 boys play u8s & u7s footy which to be fair is normally more exciting than WFC, here's to 2 better results today as I dont think I can cope with more disappointment ......

In my opinion almost every team we have played this season (even teams we have beaten) seem more organised and tactically better than we are. Is this due to management or that we no longer have players with enough quality, I can't work it out.
Are we really safe this season? Because based on yesterdays performance and other results I'm not so sure.
I do agree with most of garstons points, and frankie your last post spot on mate,

This season was always about survival and starting to build for the next couple of years. 6/9 points and we are safe.
The backbone of the side is there. We clearly miss Sean Murray who with Prince Buaben are our most creative players. For me one of them has to be in the team every week.
Add a decent keeper (which we hopefully now have for a while) and someone who can score 15 goals a season I don't see much wrong with the side.
If you then look at how the young players from the Academy have been able to gain experience without the pressure of us on their back I for one see a rosier picture than some people are trying to paint on the pitch.
I am more concerned about off the pitch. But as a number of people have already said the start of next season will answer a lot of questions about our owner. I just wish we would move the changing rooms yesterday and get rid of the East stand asap and do what Preston did for a while, leave it as an empty space.

First, who said the club lacked ambition ? What it undoubtedly lacks is finance but that is not the same thing.
The realistic ambition will always be survival with maybe a season where a top six finish affords at the least opportunity for a repeat of the Boothroyd achievement - now acknowledged by most observers (and confirmed by subsequent events) to be significantly driven by luck !
Or do the crowd want to hear grandiose statements promising
promotion on a shoestring ?
Would that count as demonstrating 'ambition' ?
West Ham and Southampton are where they are because of Gold/Sullivan and a Swiss billionaire. That does not guarantee success (ref ; Leicester) but it does give you a

I will seriously consider not renewing next season. I dont like the current set up at all. Cant get my head around Ross Wilson picking players to sign for the team. Far too many signings that have failed in my opinion either on loan or permanent. I never have been a fan of Sean Dyche. I am not convinced that we are safe at this stage. Another 3 or 4 defeats on the trot and I think we might be in the sh*t again.
And finally, it's a pity when the only footballing pleasure that we get this weekend is seeing our former beloved manager losing in the league cup final. Perhaps there is a god. I shouldn't be petty but bloody well done Liverpool.

That is what happens Monocled one when the football is dire, prospects are zero and we accept our pitiful state.
We are where we are, not because we are in our rightful place but because we accept mediocrity. That along with total mismanagement of our club since SEJ Departed.
Sadly the passion has been sucked out of our club and replaced by a liberal middle class type of supporter.
As a young lad it was the raw passion of match day that was the attraction.

We clearly missed Hodson on the right as when he's in the team we have some width and he makes runs and crosses unlike the 'headless chicken' Doyley who runs forward with his head down and then stops and passes the ball backwards every time.We also miss young Murray as Yeates, apart from his occasional deadball skills is one of the worst 'wingers' (joke) I've ever seen as he never goes past anyone and backs out of all tackles, Dickinson isn't much better, great discription in an earlier post calling them Phil & Grant Mitchell as they're about as effective footballing wise.
As for renewing season tickets, prior to this season I had a 2 hour round trip and approx. 150 miles, but this season with my daughter at University I have around a 4 hour trip and over 240 miles. I'll still renew my season ticket as wherever I live the Hornets will always be in my blood and I've seen worse times and better times so I'll continue as long as I can physically and financially make it, which I hope is many more years yet.

Southampton managed to pass the ball on our shoddy pitch so we should pass the ball. It was hideous, turgid stuff and we deserved to lose. The frustrating thing was that a handful of our players were working hard and not looking too bad individually. But the lack of coherency was alarming and depressing. I'm sure we'll be ok this season and I'm grateful for that. But Sean, can you please, please, please drill it in to them: NO HOOFING. We're better than that. And it pains me to say this but if Doyley can't do otherwise then yes, drop him.
We showed against Spurs that we can pass the ball and play well , Sean Dyche must take responsibility for the way we played , We just kicked the ball up the field with no accuracy , The full backs need replacing with players that can pass as it breaks down when they give it away so cheaply and lets the opposition know how to plat against us., What do they do in training everday ? ,As soon as they start hoofing Dyche should be screaming at them on the touchline to pass to each other . We need a massive reaction against Burnley on Saturday .

And you can't really blame a keeper for not saving a penalty.

Totally outclassed.
Our new goalie had a rush of blood on their first goal but there again from six yards out Lambert had a free header as Nyron who was marking him failed to jump.
3.0 was flattering but we wont be playing the saints every week.
As for blaming Dyche not sure that hi is doing that badly given his resources, and blaming Baz is also unfair. he has done what he said he would do so far. The players seem to do their best and some like hogg have exceeded expectations but the rotten attendances would be somewhere to start with
Ok we have two recent losses then before that three wins and a drawer... three losses before that and a run of seven or eight without defeat and we are still one of the worst supported teams in the league.
look at your mates who dont turn up and the library like rookery at times and then you really start to see the truth...we get what we deserve but apparently blame everyone but ourselves

Saturday
Kusczak. Horrible error for the first goal but looked a lot more confident than Loach has recently. Distribution was better as well. Should be a good signing.
Doyley. Awful as usual. No coincidence, as mentioned by others, that the best run of the season came without him. Has zero footballing abilty.
Mariappa and Nosworthy. Had their worst game as a pair since they came together. Not helped by those in front of them.
Dickinson. The only option so we have to live with it. Thompson and Hodson are both right sided and Doyley is rubbish. Robbo back in the summer???!!!
Yeates. Actually produced a cross from open play for our only decent chance of the game that either Eustace or Trotta should have scored from. Poor apart from this.
Hogg and Eustace. You can normally rely on these two but even they had bad games. Hogg was the worst I've seen from him. Hopefully a one off.
The Fulham bloke.
One run at the end of the first half showed what he is capable of. We never gave him the ball again in an advanced position
Deeney did what he always does and works hard. Will never score a load of goals but with somebody playing with him that does he might be ok.
Trotta. Had some nice touches and held the ball up well but we gave him nothing in or around the box to show his scoring capabilities.
Not one player had a good game. At two or three down where was Bauben who might have been able to create something. No we bring on CI. Genius
I miss the next couple due to holiday so for everybody that will be there I hope it improves.
Whatever happens I will always be there as it's in the blood.

No major investor will pour money into WFC.
As such if we want better we as fans need to put monies through the turnstiles or wa stay with what we have..mediocrity.
many will remember 20 years ago how small the support for Reading was and it was matched by their standing. Now they are a bigger and better club than us. we need to back baz in the next couple of years with better attendances and hope we can improve both on and off the field.
If we stay with small attendances then we will be a small club.
Dyche I think does his best with what he has and maybe he is too honest at times but better an optomist etc.

Strangely, though they have not had much more 'Prem time' than the 'Orns.
Interesting to see what effect the the Russian millions will have. Already in the plus since the new owner's girl friend is 'drop dead gorgeous'.
Anyone know what Baz's missus looks like !?

Yes the spurs game was good as was the atmosphere but the fact that we all waxed lyrical about it is probably more to do with the other games and atmospheres being so dire! We need to generate some life into our support and a Watford only pub and a decent bar like Harrys was could help this. On the pitch we need some intelligent, ambitious, innovative management. Mackay and dyche are too obsessed with 'lack of resource' and were/are happy to just survive. That may in reality be our level but if you aim higher, who knows? Look at wat boothroyd did in that one magical, exciting, crowd pleasing season!
garston edl wrote:Good post Garston, I see Nigel Adkins was critical of the pitch today and that's an opposition manager with 3 points in the bag!
Just dont say these things too loudly ! or you will feel the wrath of Mr Magoo,stoney77 and his chums.

I think what Keith Mercer is saying is that if anyone dare has an opinion that some see as negative, certain people sling mud, revoking reaction.
I will do it anyway people like. Treat me with respect I will reciprocate, regardless of view.
Insult me, expect it back with interest.
What I must add, Keith Mercer, what a player one of my old favourites. Anyone remember Laurie Craker, career cut short by injury?
