Highly-rated Watford midfielder Sean Murray has been called up to the Republic of Ireland Under-21s squad.

The youngster will represent the Under-19s in their UEFA Championships qualifying tournament (for more click here before joining up with the older group afterwards.

The Under-21s play Denmark in a friendly in Dublin on May 28 and then meet Italy in a Euro Under-21 Championships qualifier in Sligo on June 4.

Former Watford defender Rob Kiernan, who is now at Wigan Athletic, misses out due to the injury which ended his loan at Accrington Stanley.

Under-21 boss Noel King said: "We've assembled a good squad that we will be looking to build on our previous performances. At this stage of the season some players have not played for a couple of weeks so the Denmark game will be extremely important.

"Italy are a very well-prepared side that recently beat Scotland 4-1 in a warm-up game so everything is geared towards being prepared for that fixture."

Rob Kiernan at Wigan - I thought that was only a rumour.

Delighted for him of course but a bit disconcerted about him getting this exposure in the close season! I hope we still have him for 2012/13! I would have preferred to keep him under wraps.

Shame he didn't choose England, think he's good enough. Does he have an Irish accent?

Crazy that he's called up for both the under 19s and under 21s. Pleased for him but we need him fit for next season not knackered!

It's funny how these things happen. Just when I was worried about SM leaving, this comes up! - http://www.bbc.co.uk

Congrats to Murray. He deserves this. See no reason why he should come back next season knackered. He's a fit, healthy lad, unlike Smith it seems. This lad seems to want to play for his country. Good on you lad.

Well done SM and SD for giving the lad the chance of first team football. I am sure he will go on to have a great career and we can all watch his development with pride
