Watford owner Laurence Bassini to name new stand after Graham Taylor and also negotiating to clear club's debt

First published in Watford FC News by , Group Sports Editor

Laurence Bassini says he will name the new East Stand after Graham Taylor and claims he is in negotiations to clear Watford's debt.

The Hornets owner contacted this newspaper earlier this afternoon to state that he wanted to honour the club's most successful manager, who stood down as non-executive chairman yesterday, and subsequently revealed that he is in the "process of negotiating" to clear the club's overdraft facility and to pay off the bond holders and the matter is now "with the lawyers".

Although the decision to name the stand, when it is built, after Taylor will be popular with the majority of fans, it is the significant financial move that is of arguably greater importance in terms of the club's long-term future.

Bassini stated that, to date, £2.5m plus interest has been paid back to the three bond holders - Lord Ashcroft, director David Fransen and former chairman Graham Simpson - with a figure of around £7.5m still owing. He explained that if negotations are successful, this sum will be paid off and future interest payments waived. Furthermore, the owner is also working to clear the club's overdraft - a facility of £1m according to Bassini.

Fans have taken to the messageboards and social networking sites such as Twitter to pay a host of tributes to Taylor following his decision to step down and Bassini said: "He did so much for this club I am going to name the new stand after him. It will be called the Graham Taylor Stand because I think he deserves it."

The next phase in the redevelopment of Vicarage Road could begin shortly, with the owner also revealing that he would like to start work on the south-west corner as early as next week, as long as the relaying of the Vicarage Road pitch is at such a stage that workmen can gain access to the building.

This structure will accommodate new changing rooms and additional executive boxes, among other facilities, and is expected to take three to four months to complete.

I presume the only way he can achieve this will be to sell part of the club ?? Can't imagine he's just popped into the bank.

To be fair to Lutondown there is no promise of when the stand will be built -perhaps that will follow shortly when he reveals where the additional funds are coming from ??

So how's he planning on paying off the bond holders? With another loan? This scares me more than anything. At least with the bond it's a structured debt and people with half a business brain can step in when Bas screws up (which he surely will). Take that away and he can do what he likes. I'm bored with his constant nonsense statements, the man has no business pedigree whatsoever and it's clear he's just moving the clubs money around without investing any of his own. I hope Kevin Affleck is right and we will have new owners soon.

Come on guys & gals, he may end up being a liability but attack him when he does something wrong rather than for the sake of it .....
Best finish in the league for years on one of the lowest budgets, we have a good young manager and it looks like we should keep our good players this season (unlike last) a couple of additions and we could be an outside chance of the play offs !!! My glass is half full at the mo, you lot? ....

He reckons the club is about to be sold to a European.
I don't post this to be contentious, but Affleck ultimately paid the price or his findings with Homer and co, and is still a journo.

It is interesting to see the timing of this as the article points out Bassini contacted the paper, after the rumour mill went into action over possible finance issues. Bassini has ignored these and stated what he is currently trying to achieve and as usual it is all positive. As said by me and others he has not done anything wrong so far and hopefully never will so we should support him as the owner of our precious club instead of trying to dig up dirt instead.Remember what he has done already is more than the previous 3 owners!!

Will it be you turning up for the fight, or your daddy?

You have your opinion on LB fine, but if you cant stick to the topic then please shut up. The fact you don’t and immediately resort to threats and insults just shows how little substance you have, you cant discuss facts as you don’t have any.

LB was going to be out by the weekend wasn’t it Buckler, well its Friday now and not a hint of that happening so still looking forward to the apology buckler.

If LB has the funds to clear the debts, excellent news too. When the work starts on the stand will that finally shut the moaners up I wonder?

LB is an easy target for innuendo.

Based on what he has achieved so far he has proved, as has Sean Dyche, that he is good for the club. Improvements are being made and if he can with an early settlement clear previous debts it is all good for him and the club.

If people bothered to ask why the South west corner was slow perhaps they may find that previous management and boards thought we were Man U or City.

Over the last few years we sufferred from a board that understood little, two Chief Execs who were a joke. Remember the prudent management, the cash flows with mega million holes, plan B, Aidy signing ten players in January etc etc..

The trouble is we have too many contributors who open their mouths before engaging their brains or even worse too many who dont even understand the horrendous mistakes made in the last ten years, even some presided over by GT.

Long term Laurence may prove to be the best thing since sliced bread or perhaps the worst thing. Time will tell, but he has not done a lot wrong and until lutondown, Mr Bankrupt can support their nasty claims they would do better to shut it than continue with their unsubstantiated rantings hidden behind their anonymous identities.

Some will say they are entitled to state their views but in reality its is rubbish spouted by lowlife. I think Corbindallas has stated the case as it stands and is factually based, I trust others may take a leaf out of his book in future.

In meantime nice to see that Buck stated a week ago he was determined to see his existing contract out with Swansea. now he is joining Liverpool. At least Mr Integrity is consistent a great manager but not too trustworthy.

I checked out Kevin Affleck's Twitter this morning and there is some very interesting stuff being said. The Guy I know who is close to the club doesn't think there is anything in the KA rumour mill. Anyone can go on Twitter and look so not going to repeat it here (as WO would probably remove the post anyway), but...you would think LB would do something to dispell the rumours and also to at least try and build some trust with supporters. I'm also in the "LB hasn't really done anything wrong, but for some reason I just don't trust him" camp.

Rumours flying about that Bankrupt Bas has not met payments and found out to be a phoney and potless! Gone by the weekend! Will put an end to all this backing him up if true, some serious Humble Pie and apologies coming soon! I'm loving it!

If Mr Bassini were to go what would the unhappy cr-appers have to moan about (apart from me)? Would they complain about the new regime before it was in or would they give it 24 hours? Oh no would they now become happy cr-appers and end the entertainment we’ve all had from their imbecilic posts?

Indeed.
The actions on which to judge LB are the re-opening of the pub and the replacement of the pitch.
And when we come back in August we'll see if there's been any action in the south-west corner.

I am not very keen on these named stands. I think the Rous stand name is ridiculous. He had nothing to link him with Watford FC other than being the sports master at Watford Boys Grammar School who switched the main school sport from Football to Rugby! I think you can make an exception for Graham Taylor with the East stand becoming the Graham Taylor Stand, but perhaps at the same time the Rous could revert to being known as the Shrodells Stand. Anyway the main priority is having a team more than 11,000 want to pay and watch every other week!

The following comment comes with no hidden agenda and plenty of trustworthy information. If our club does not have new owners in the very near future then we are going to have some extremely serious problems. Despite the good performance on the pitch last season, the club is in my opinion, in a terrible, terrible mess. And before I get any abuse for saying this, believe me it upsets me greatly to see it.

Incredible. Some good news comes through and we have people offering each other for a fight. If you choose to think that Bassini will fall over at some point then fine. He may well do but at the moment he's done more than the previous two owners put together. There are always people looking at buying football clubs (god knows why) and until something concrete happens Bassini is the man whether you trust him or not. For me the jury is still out but so far so good.
I for one am looking to the future and it looks relatively bright at the moment and am interested to find out who we might sign in the summer or possibly sell.
I care not what pub you drink in or what town you live in or if you're the bare knuckle champion of the world if the best answer you can come up with is "come on then" to other posters then no wonder people get bored of you.
Look on the brightside. We have the pub re opened which was costing us 6 figures a year when empty, we have a new pitch and sounds like we maybe close to getting the SW corner finished. We have a good young team that finished a lot higher than expected and a good young manager to boot.
Can't see much wrong with any of that!

Agree - having a stand named after Rous is a disgrace.

It was Rous's decision as head of FIFA to authorise the World Cup play-off match between Chile and the Soviet Union in Santiago's National Stadium in November 1973.

Pinochet had used the National Stadium as a concentration camp for his political opponents. Hundreds were murdered there and thousands were tortured.

The Soviet Union quite correctly refused to play in such a venue but Rous shamefully waived Chile through to the finals with a bye.

Let's not wait for Baz's fantasy stand to be built - rename the Rous the Graham Taylor stand now!

I am brave enough, just can't be arsed to enter tools games. The article above is more important than seeing how far you can pee up a wall, but if you and the great plank Bankrupt want to do it knock yourselves out (literally).
I am at a loss to understand why people are so willing to give their unconditional backing to Bazzini.

Buckler, Bankrupt, Lutondown etc are 100 per cent right to be sceptical given (a) Bazinni's track record in business; (b)
the convoluted share structure he used to fund his takeover; (c) his refusal to be transparent about his backers.

His reluctance to attend fans' forums is largely irrelevant but, of course, it could be said to speak volumes about his character.

His 'achievements' since the takeover are refurbishing a run-down boozer and buying some grass seed for the pitch. These investments have, of course, been funded by the millions received from the sale of our best players.

Alex what about the funding of the club when he took over £3.5m?, The two injections of funds this season of £2m. The Bond payments of £2m. The £1m spent on players last season. The infrustructure improvements. In addition the sales of players since he took over DG and MS we DO NOT get all the funds in one go it is paid over the season. These sales did not cover the above?. The club will still make a loss of c£2m.
Yes Baz PR has been poor but improving, why should he tell you where he gets his dosh from. Why is it our business.?
Do you broadcast how much you earn from work to your colleagues? I know football is different. But the Football League would not have sactioned the transaction if they were not happy with the transactions.
Let see what he does first before carping him.
Don't people deserve a second chance?.
If in five years time, the club is still in debt, still fighting against relegation. Has a ground that looks like a farm yard, then by all means carp. Till them guys give him a break.
On a another note with the new regulations regarding Finanical Management kicking in next season, it may well support smaller clubs like ours.
Anyway, enjoy the summer and leave the guy alone.
