Ipswich Town to sign Watford goalkeeper Scott Loach for less than £200,000

Hornets goalkeeper Scott Loach will complete his transfer to Ipswich Town today in a move which the Watford Observer understands is worth less than £200,000.

Loach completed his medical last night and is set to join the club he supported as a boy, and played for as a youngster.

Like most deals, the transfer fee is likely to be 'undisclosed' but we understand the sum will be less than £200,000.

The 24-year-old joined Watford in 2006 and made 163 appearances for the club.

Watford pulled out of a deal to sign Tom Heaton following the club's takeover and Loach's replacement is expected to be either Carlo Cudicini or Manuel Almunia.

We're all going to say the same thing aren't we?!
£300k - is that all??
However, whilst on paper he may be worth more, the reality is that's probably good business.
He has huge weaknesses as a keeper and, in my view, defenders never had confidence in him.
I wish him well at Ipswich though. Good luck Scott.

I agree. It is a shame we couldn't sell him a couple of seasons ago while he was in the U21 set up. Hindsight is a wonderful thing.

How can this be good business sense. 2 seasons ago he was worth £5m and on his way to spurs, now he goes to a team, in competition with us for £300k. I can understand they are giving him the chance he wanted, and he has not had a great couple of years; however people forget that he is just 24, there is at least 10yrs of top flight football left in...that 10yrs of maturity etc. I know we are more financially secure than in recent time however I can help to think this is a poor decision.
In line with this, I can't help thinking this is the begining of a long clearout. After watching the players on Tuesday night, I can't see 3/4 of the squad being at vicarage road at the end of the season. Let's hope things do not move too quickly otherwise we will have a brand new team with no tme to gel.

It is very good business.

Forget your gut feels, hunches etc.The facts are simple

Three years ago Scott despite his lack of years was a very good keeper.
Since then he has gone backwards and cost us a lot of points.
The difference between him and Tamas was chalk and cheese and UTD let him go on a free.

As for Scott having ten years at the top, I hope someone teaches him to take command of his penalty area and catch the odd cross, because without those basic skills he will not make it.

What might come back to bite us is if Scott suddenly starts playing well and that may be a reflection of the way he reacts to coaching.

if that happens those who defend Alec on the basis of him as a person and a player may well have to revise their opinion of him as a coach.

Was there ever an offer of £2M from Spurs on the table? I thought it was 6 months loan with a view to a permanent move.

I think most regular supporters would agree on the good points and bad points about his game.

How long can you keep saying potential?

Frankie Frazer says...
9:10am Thu 19 Jul 12

He was never worth £5 million, the realistic figure was £2 million when Spurs were interested ...
IMO if he does get back to his best I just don't get how it has anything to do with Alec? Loach's confidence was shot over the last season and he will now be going to a new team where the majority of supporters will be behind him, if he does well it will be down to those factors rather than Alec not doing his job correctly! A keeper is a different beast to other players and confidence is the key, you cannot train confidence only encourage, if that doesn't happen then no amount of coaching will help!!! Just my opinion tho ..
For me this is the right move for both player and Watford, regardless of the fee being discussed he needs to move on ....

we will get loose change for those 2 or end up paying off their contracts to get rid.

All of these changes will succeed or fail based on the quality of the replacements. If the Pozzos want to accept what some think is a low price, let them. We are no longer living hand to mouth where the ££ we have available to spend is totally linked to the ££ we receive from sales.

Loach is a subjective call, he may come good, he may not, all our opinions are valid. However if we get in a great keeper in who commands his box and exudes confidence we will all be happy. If we get a keeper who is past it, paid too much and equally worrying at the back, we will all be unhappy.

Lets see what happens.

We're not losing money on him, we just didn't cash-in when we could have. Bad management at the time.

Chamberlain is partly to blame. A good coach can and should inject both confidence and technique. Loach had neither so where was Chamberlain.

TK took his place and look what happened to our results and progress up the league. Our defence become settled and much more able.Sorry, but the stats just don't lie.

I wish Loach well but we just need to stop talk about his potential, his age, his past etc etc and move on to better things now. End of....

This is a joke deal! Less that £200K. Although players do not move for huge fees at this level currently this is a complete joke of a deal.

This will end up costing us money. Whoever we bring in will be number 1, it looks like it will be an old/experienced goalkeeper - so say he gets injured and we are required to get another one in on loan we could have to pay a loan fee or fee abs wages combined above 200K!!!

The move was right for both player and WFC.It did seem that the boys confidence had gone which in any position is so important none more so than the keeper. An outfield player can regain confidence in trying things in an area of the pitch where it's not that critical, not so a keeper.Anyway good luck to the boy,if he plays bet he has a 'blinder' at the Vic.

Yes we do, possibly 20% my mate is a Lincoln fan and he was doing cartwheels when the loan move with a view to £2 million nearly happened. Probably the best thing for loach to move on. Yes he in young for a keeper but will only improve if he is more positive in commanding his area and the back four, who at WFC never seemed to know whether he was coming out to meet the ball or staying back. He has to be braver in his decision making. Also learn to punch properly. All that may come with a new coach, but most of it lies with Loach himself and his attitude. I wish him well because if he can sort things out I think he has the ability to be a good, not great, keeper. I hope we have a sell on clause.

Sad though it is I have to agree. Scott's faults were plain to see and so you have to ask the question what was Alec coaching him? Has to take command of his penalty area, communication etc.

We wish him well but as Duxbury has said 'Watford's ambitions have changed overnight' and that means moving some players on. It's the modern way.

As for the replacements mentioned. Cudiccini over Almunia but both just rumours - should have signed the lad from Cardiff.

One of these was magnificent and I would judge it as good a save as I have seen for a very long time. We went on to win that game and Scott's contribution made me feel that he would be far better away from Watford where, without the bile of so-called fans whose hostility to him meant he could never recover his confidence, he could yet go on to become the great keeper that so many knowledgeable people believed he could be. Ipswich could just that kind of place and I wish him well; we may yet come to regret the way we abused this young man.'

In regards to all the moaners last season that REALLY wanted to get rid of Loach this news must come as a blessing. To me this is a normal deal. He has been a liability practically all season with some bad judgement in the box but to be honest: He needs some expierenced guidance but I feel that AC is not the guy to bring it to him. Therefore this move is a good one. Also seen in the light that we need some "fresh blood" in goal. I dont care how old that person is as long as he´s got EXPERIENCE and can dominate the box.

How many did Priskin score for Ipswich and where is he now - For whatever reason oach had stagnated as a player at Watford - if we are not going to play him let him have a go at resurrecting his carear - we save his wages and get a fee and Lincoln get a little cut too.
