Watford boss Gianfranco Zola was 'encouraged' by Cork City victory

Gianfranco Zola signing autographs in Cork last night Gianfranco Zola signing autographs in Cork last night

Gianfranco Zola says he was encouraged by Watford's performance in last night's 2-0 victory over Cork City.

The Hornets, who again lined up in a 4-3-3 formation, kept possession well for much of the contest and whilst they lacked a cutting edge in the final third at times, they still came away with the win thanks to goals by Joe Garner and Piero Mingoia.

Zola told the club's website: "The game went as planned. It went well. I was quite pleased with the way the team performed.

"There were some good things and I'm looking forward to improving other areas - the performance itself was encouraging though."

As for pre-season as a whole, he added: "Everything is going as planned and that encourages me. In fact, as I've already mentioned, I've been surprised with the levels we're reaching and I'm already looking forward to the next game."

I don't think many of us would have predicted where our goals have come from so far in pre season. It was said " GZ takes players and turns them into good players and takes good players and turns them into great players".

If Deeney was going to be sacked - it would have happened by now. Clearly he is going to get a second chance and good job too - whilst no one can agree with his actions, it is clear he was provoked and just handled it badly. If he is lucky and keeps himself to himself he will be out late October and physically and match fit by Xmas - we will then sell him in Jan I suspect

Wrong he wasn’t provoked…….. I quote

Still he is yet to apologies for his actions to the victim’s family. Sack the guy and move on.

Have to agree with GT. If I'd been jailed for beating someone up, I'd have been sacked. It makes your employer look bad by association. Watford would do well to quietly get rid of Deeney and draw a line under this whole ugly affair.

I was not joking with my Deeney comment - Played out of position or not at all until Sordell was sold. Since the Spurs game he went on to score 9 goals in 17 appearances decent in anyones book surely??

Maybe I am on my own here by I would say that was a pretty good strike rate, once given the opportunity and if not for that stupid error on his part would have been off to a flyer at the start of the season. We will obviously have to see how it has affected him now if indeed the club do stick by him, but would be a shame to waste the Sir Elton concert money by just sacking him.

No one condones what TD did, least of all me but I remember doing stuff when I was a youngster that I regretted a short while later and makes my hair stand on end now, especially where a bit of tribalism and a bit of alcohol was involved.

We waited nearly a year to organize that concert and get in that SEJ concert money and as far as I know we spent a large part of it on TD. He spent most of last season playing out of position and when he was moved into a true strikers roll, he started to make good.

Isn't by far the best plan, to allow him to return, get him as fit as poss as soon as poss and see what happens then? If it's not working then sell him for whatever we can get for him. Let's not pillory him too soon or we might just be losing a valuable resource. Everyone deserves a second chance.

From WFC website

"Gianfranco Zola's side were without the services of Chris Iwelumo, Prince Buaben, Gavin Massey and Jack Bonham with minor injuries, while Stephen McGinn has continued his fitness work under the Hornets' new coaching staff."

That seems to answer the CI (injured) and SMcG questions...still unfit. Am I on my own in wondering why The WO doesn't ask the questions that we all want the answers to?

BicesterLee says...
3:53pm Wed 25 Jul 12

Why are so many people concerned about getting Deeney back as though we simply cannot survive without him. I accept that although I hope he never has the opportunity to pull on a Watford shirt again, put alongside Big Chris or Garner he is clearly the best of the 3, but we still don't need him as that smacks of desperation. We just need to bring another striker, or 2 in from elsewhere and forget about him and now we have new owners, I can't see that being a big problem, not big money signings just consistent proven goalscorers with ratios of better than 1 in 4.

It would also be nice to not rely so heavily on one or 2 strikers for all of the goals and get back to a similar position to our last promtion season where midfielders and full backs contributed more to the goals tally than they have in recent seasons. Murray will obviously make a big contribution but we need 2 wingers contributing between 5 and 10 goals each and the centre backs chipping in with 5 or more each throughout the season.

Deeney is where he deserves to be and is best forgotten until such time as the possibility of him returning comes up, we can have endless debate then but now I'd rather focus on other options and with our lack of goals or a cutting edge in the 3 games to date, I'm sure that's being worked on by GZ and his team as a priority.

Would we be having this discussion over garner? Big round head laying on the ground, went to kick it and missed, were

as Mr Deeney connected. And gets sent down. Who is the daddy?
Sorry that is I really bad taste, I apologise. Lutondown. Love your sense of humour, it works, but can you tell me? Ron wigg or Tony Gedmintes. Who would be the Daddy?

Nice to see Zola taking a look at the trialists before signing them up.if they good for the squad use them, if not send them back. Let's face it they are going no where else. So take time and don't rush it. Pozzo army....

Ronny Wigg all day long! Geidmintis it is by the way (googled it as my spelling was as off as yours)
There was a list and it was sad to see Larry McGettigan, Pat Morrisey (he's up he's down, he's in the Rose And Crown, Morrisey!) are no longer with us, I obviously missed the announcements (?) when it happened

For once 'half glass full' Lutondown makes a good point about the Observer. they need to be careful.

Regarding new signings etc it is becoming fairly obvious that the new owners/management have a unique style of PR. they are very reticent. An example of this was the Dyche sacking, sacked on the Monday and the whole world new yet WFC announce it on the Friday.

It also appears that they want a very good look at players before signing them, this on the surface should avoid the dross that has been signed in previous seasons but may also prevent us from instantly saying yes when offerred Tamas on loan. It does fit with the way a normal group is run and our Italian masters do appear to demand good controls something that Homer could have done with. Overall it should give us stability what else we have to wait and see.

As you quite rightly say Chris, if this is an accurate observation regarding the way the new regime works, I for one won't be disappointed, especially following the many disappointing arrivals at the beginning of last season.

I presume we will be signing the 3 trialists we had playing..

As for Deeney...we're probably going to let him go when his contract run out or when he comes out with 6 month left...

Deeney is not good enough for for us in more ways than one.

Just think with all that's happening or not at the moment, At the end of May our aspirations were a striker from Shrewsbury and a full back from York who were both out of contract!

Half glass full me? No way my cup runneth over since old Ginger ( forgot his name) and Stanmore Spas left the building.
And I will seriously edit my future posts, I would hate for you to have to agree with me
