Watford boss Gianfranco Zola was 'encouraged' by Cork City victory
9:37am Wednesday 25th July 2012 in Watford FC News
Gianfranco Zola signing autographs in Cork last night
Gianfranco Zola says he was encouraged by Watford's performance in last night's 2-0 victory over Cork City.
The Hornets, who again lined up in a 4-3-3 formation, kept possession well for much of the contest and whilst they lacked a cutting edge in the final third at times, they still came away with the win thanks to goals by Joe Garner and Piero Mingoia.
Zola told the club's website: "The game went as planned. It went well. I was quite pleased with the way the team performed.
"There were some good things and I'm looking forward to improving other areas - the performance itself was encouraging though."
As for pre-season as a whole, he added: "Everything is going as planned and that encourages me. In fact, as I've already mentioned, I've been surprised with the levels we're reaching and I'm already looking forward to the next game."

To avoid rash statements the club are taking their time and reightly so. Deeney may want to know what his future holds but it is WFC's decision first.

I was not joking with my Deeney comment - Played out of position or not at all until Sordell was sold. Since the Spurs game he went on to score 9 goals in 17 appearances decent in anyones book surely??
Maybe I am on my own here by I would say that was a pretty good strike rate, once given the opportunity and if not for that stupid error on his part would have been off to a flyer at the start of the season. We will obviously have to see how it has affected him now if indeed the club do stick by him, but would be a shame to waste the Sir Elton concert money by just sacking him.

We waited nearly a year to organize that concert and get in that SEJ concert money and as far as I know we spent a large part of it on TD. He spent most of last season playing out of position and when he was moved into a true strikers roll, he started to make good.
Isn't by far the best plan, to allow him to return, get him as fit as poss as soon as poss and see what happens then? If it's not working then sell him for whatever we can get for him. Let's not pillory him too soon or we might just be losing a valuable resource. Everyone deserves a second chance.

That seems to answer the CI (injured) and SMcG questions...still unfit. Am I on my own in wondering why The WO doesn't ask the questions that we all want the answers to?

It would also be nice to not rely so heavily on one or 2 strikers for all of the goals and get back to a similar position to our last promtion season where midfielders and full backs contributed more to the goals tally than they have in recent seasons. Murray will obviously make a big contribution but we need 2 wingers contributing between 5 and 10 goals each and the centre backs chipping in with 5 or more each throughout the season.
Deeney is where he deserves to be and is best forgotten until such time as the possibility of him returning comes up, we can have endless debate then but now I'd rather focus on other options and with our lack of goals or a cutting edge in the 3 games to date, I'm sure that's being worked on by GZ and his team as a priority.

Could it be though that Frank is having limited info passed his way, it would not make sense for the Wobby to join in the nut job rumours that are circulating and risk upsetting the new regime ( watch goodfellas and you'll understand why!)
But addressing the post, by all accounts a decent passing performance, playing 4 3 3, a great goal and Zolas third look at players. Not a bad nights work, sad as it may be for the Dycheys here.

Regarding new signings etc it is becoming fairly obvious that the new owners/management have a unique style of PR. they are very reticent. An example of this was the Dyche sacking, sacked on the Monday and the whole world new yet WFC announce it on the Friday.
It also appears that they want a very good look at players before signing them, this on the surface should avoid the dross that has been signed in previous seasons but may also prevent us from instantly saying yes when offerred Tamas on loan. It does fit with the way a normal group is run and our Italian masters do appear to demand good controls something that Homer could have done with. Overall it should give us stability what else we have to wait and see.

For once 'half glass full' Lutondown makes a good point about the Observer. they need to be careful.
And I will seriously edit my future posts, I would hate for you to have to agree with me
