Former Arsenal keeper Manuel Almunia and Queens Park Rangers defender Fitz Hall among seven signed by Watford

Watford have confirmed the signing of seven new players – two permanent and five season-long loans.

The Watford Observer revealed earlier today that the club’s embargo had been lifted and that the seven signings would be announced shortly.

And the Hornets have tonight confirmed former Queens Park Rangers defender Fitz Hall and ex-Arsenal goalkeeper Manuel Almunia have signed one-year contracts.

They have been joined by Udinese trio Almen Abdi, Steve Leo Beleck and Matej Vydra and Granada duo Daniel Pudil and Ikechi Anya.

Great news. On the previous thread someone complained that Almunia and Hall have only signed one year deals. From my perspective this is very sensible business - others have pointed out that both are towards the back end of their careers, so it doesn't make sense giving them long-term deals. Equally, if we make the Prem, then we could realistically look at better options without having to offload players who are on high-ish wages. This strikes me as very shrewd and the opposite of how we have approached such matters in the past (I give you a 4 year contract for Mr Duke Ellington, by way of example). I'm also very happy that the loanees are all on season-long deals, which means we have a settled squad for the season....and finally, very pleased about obtaining a much better new sponsor than the Happy Egg Co, without losing their valued support as a local business. All in all, a pretty encouraging start, as far as I'm concerned....roll on the start of the season!

if zola wants to play his 4-5-1, in my mind he needs a proven winger. we only have murray to play that role, with either vydra and beleck to play the lone role. unless we want forsyth and mingoia up top we need more quality in that area.

Always best to sign these older players on short term contracts just in case it doesn't work out. Quite a lot of people think it a mistake to sign Hall, Almunia is no spring chicken, even for a Goalkeeper so I recon 1 year contracts are just about right.

Totally agree. They will be looking at the existing youngsters or promising additions from the scouting network. Should circumstances dictate, and one or both proove more than satisfactory, they will be offered a new, longer contract.

There is one obvious weakness---someone up front. I would expect another signing there. I do suspect that we may be susprised to find a suprise or two in the forward department. For instance, I have a feeling that Garner may be a better player than we have previously seen under a Zola type system. We will see---.

Ikechi Anya is very quick and very tricky ... What means proven? Pozzo's don't do proven when it comes to forwards ... they develop them.

A 35-year-old keeper, an unpopular journeyman released by QPR notable only for picking a fight with Aidy and now five mercenaries briefly passing through, all of whom sound like anagrams and about whom none of us, whatever we may pretend, know anything........if Dyche had let Mapps go and signed that lot with the proceeds there'd have been an absolute outcry. In fact the classic, 'Reminds me of Lionel Ainsworth' must be one of the least compelling testimonials I've ever read! Personally I am very happy with how things are starting to line up. It is tough being a Watford fan as so often things seem to always take twice as long for us, but we get there in the end. The original take over took a while and obviously these singings have as well, but slowly and surely it is all coming together. I also think that Garner may well flourish, I remember as a kid how different teachers would be inspiring, giving you a sense of confidence and self belief - I don't think it is that different when a new manager comes along, particularly for young players. These really are exciting times and I also think there could b a suprise forward singing for us, I don't have a clue who that would be, but just get that feeling. I am also glad the club are keeping Happy Egg on board, having local companies is a big plus as far as I am concerned and now the new SEGA deal (a deal this good takes ages!!) is another bonus. The Baz era is in the past and I am sure that in time we will find out all that really went on, but now is the time to start looking forward - we also have what looks like an excellent new playing surface, a qualit kit maker in PUMA and hopefully, above all else the magical optimism that comes this time of year!! Good luck one and all.

What they also forget is that we have our own youngsters developing and maturing every season, now they will also benefit from some top continental coaching. Having seen enough amateur teams in Germany that I reckon could comfortably survive in league 2 here (and higher for the best of them), I've been begging for something like this to happen for years.

Can't believe people are actually moaning about 7 (SEVEN) signings. haven't you numptys noticed that we've basically got the same squad as last season but with a shed load more options on top.
Yes we've lost mapps, and old giant head deeney is otherwise engaged for a while, but there's 3 new forwards and "one size" is decent cover for tiny and nos, and when you throw bennet and the other young defenders coming through on the pile that's a pretty decent squad already.
All that's needed, in my opinion, is an experienced championship level striker to help out while the new guys settle, and probably a keeper so our 2 youngsters can go out on loan to get some invaluable experience.
Bet hey what do i know!!!!!

Regarding the 7 signings... 1 year contracts for players the wrong side of 30 to me makes good business sense and just goes to show what good business people we now have in charge. Almunia like Tomasz will provide the start of a very good backbone along with Fitz Hall. A good Polish friend of mine who watched Daniel Pudil at Slovan Liberec reckons we have the best player in the league. Abdi at Wealdstone ran the show with Hogg in midfield. Anya i believe has developed into a pacey, tricky winger. Vydra and Beleck will give us the pace and cutting edge up front that we have not seen for years. How anyone cannot be excited or be negative already is beyond me and frankley we do not need your sort.

I do not anything about the 5 loanees. All i would say is as a season ticket holder who had my first season ticket when Mike Keen was manager (about £12 for a junior i think) no one who joins the club will dislodge from my list of favourite players my first team of Rankin, Garner, Downes and Mercer - But after the last 5 seasons what a joy this pre-season to know we are financially secure; unlikely to be relegated, stand a good chance of finishing in the top 10; will develop our academy players to fit into a style of play that is worth turning up and watching. Plus the prospect is we have the chance of becoming an established top 25 club, with a stadium, crowd and players to think that Premiership football is a realistic prospect for more than the odd goalden patch one seasson flash in the pan. I am now certain if this change of ownership had not occurred we would be heading down the path of Portsmouth and Rangers.

Grear stuff, Hall and Almunia are obvious stop gaps who might get another year or two if they do well this season and yes the others are transient but as another poster said £10mill+ of talent for free (or will WFC pay a fee as seems quite common these days?) isnt to be sniffed at!

If you look back over previous seasons we've always benefited from loan players and struggled when some have gone back to parent clubs so these five can hopefully make the difference between mid table and play offs maybe even higher. Yes i'm getting carried away

Why am I so angry about this, no not because of Bassini supporting as some like to jump to as defence of their shortcomings, it has nothing to do with him he's GONE, FINISHED, it is because we the fans have been deliberately lied to, it is because Zola wanted to sign Carlo Cudicini instead of Almunia but couldn't make a bid for him because of the embargo which means we now have second choice in Zola's opinion (although admittedly better than what we had), I doubt CC will come now as Almunia wont want to sit on the bench to be understudy to CC and Zola had to get him or miss out on possibly both, also other free agents were looked at instead of signings thus the FH situation. Also who else have we lost whilst this was addressed, there where others which I will not go into detail but clearly we would have moved forward better without this apparent very secretive small admin error (there's more to this than we are being told)!! I also pick up the excuse on delay of signings in the said official statement about due diligence to take stock of the players on trail etc, so that's why we signed all of them and rejected none did Zola really have any other choice given the time taken to sort this out! Call me a septic if you like but I want what's best and clearly if we are accepting and as forgiving as some clearly seem to be about being lied to and a feeder for developing players then your in the right place, for me it's unacceptable and needs to be sorted for us to move forward and hopefully the Pozzo's can address the shortfalls clearly being shown already by our new CEO who seems to have not learn't from his West Ham day's on how to address the fans and his staff with the truth and FACTS!!!!

Do you know for a fact that Zola wanted CC ahead of Almunia or have you been reading too many rumour web sites?

As with any business why would you want to advertise any negativity in particular during the honeymoon period, and let's face it any problem would have been left by the previous owners reign.

They have an awful lot to get through in a very short space of time in order to get our club in a better position than it has been for many years to challenge once again. Do not lose sight of the FACT that we could have bvery easily been in Portsmouth's shoes right now if it was not for this buy out.

I would suggest that you stop **** about the fact that you were not consulted throughout and be a little grateful that the club we love is in the position it is in right now.

I would just like to apologise to all that in the heat of the moment I responded to this original post.

If you are referencing the film 'The Fifth Element' with your posting name I think you should know you're spelling it incorrectly. Bruce Willis' character is named Korben Dallas. I didn't think you'd want to make yourself look anymore foolish than you already have is all.

What are they hiding, if it was a admin error so be it but to lie and state it was all sorted when it was not is not a great transparent start, in fact it is worse than a no show imo, and now they cleared the matter and announce the signings the simples think nothing more of it. Totally agree. The embargo was due to an "administrative error" in the previous regime which I read as financial failings. Why would you want to advertise this fact and put off players coming to the club - in all liklihood they were advised to say nothing until it was sorted out. If the issue was very recent then their due dilligence may not have picked it up. They have sorted it we have the players and in the fullness of time once all remaining issues with the reign of Baz have been sorted out we will most likely find out how close we were to going back into administration if these liars hadn't come in with their money, their players, their long term ambition to firmly plant little old Watford in the Premiership - shame on them.

Some people just do not know when to look a gift horse in the mouth! It is alright to have a glass half full mentality from time to time.

We don’t know there was an embargo, we only have the WO's say so, and if there was we know even less about the reason why it was there. All there is a theories which once again people are taking as fact.

Corbin you're right in the sense that if this had been LB there would have been the most almighty abuse towards him, a number of things have happened at the club since the Pozzo's took over which would have cause riots in the anti LB camp but the same camp wants to crush down anyone that mentions the 'issues' under the new ownership. But on your other points, unless you have insider knowledge its just your own theory, you're entitled to it but its not proven fact at all.

Seeing as Granage only just missed relegation last season if Anya was one of the better players for them then they are quite right to be worried. But again what players have they brought in this season. I'll suggest again that the WO should run articles on our sister clubs, as well as being interesting in its own right it would be a great indication on what may happen at WFC in the future and how the Pozzo's do things. Some fan interviews would be great, maybe the coaches too?

Mind you they did pi.. I mean walk their league.

I think this will be a trend with developing players. Yes we do send out our youngsters on loan but Pozzo clubs appear to send theirs to places where they'll get the best experience for their talents rather than just experience. I can certainly see some of our youngsters going out to the spanish and italian lower leagues for an all together different experience...

Well I can't see it being this season but yeah, if we go up then the worlds his oyster. One thing we will have to get used to is the disengagement of finances for transfers. In reality when Udinese sell a player for £35m it benefits us too and vice versa, I think we can assume things will now be done in such a way to divert funds and players where most needed. The garden is rosey now but it won't always be and to a degree it's just something we'll have to accept. One thing's for sure ... it won't ever get boring.

Excited! we should be because once again we have stolen a march on the big money splashers. Despite what the bookies say we are putting something together that should see us right up there. Forget Forest, forget Leeds etc buying 2nd choice players that they can only hope will slot together, we have a host of players that play the same football under the same coaches day in day out.... A word to the Wiki wise ...

I keep noticing the odd poster referring to less than brilliant stats and only played for such and such etc. but you conveniently forget they have all been scouted and bought at low cost by a Champions league club with a view to develop them into valuable players, something they have done time and time again to make them one of very few profitable Serie A clubs.
I'm sure not all of their bargains work out but I'm also sure that the ones that did had no better stats than the five we have brought in recently.

Leave Wiki for the unknowing and trust in Pozzo's scouts and coaches ... it's a system that works.

Doesn't this loaning also help us with the financial fair play thingy coming in soon, if we don't have to buy players but loan them from Udinese Or Granada, our relatively small income streams can just be used for our staffs wages as the loanee's will be kept on the other clubs books.

Doesn't this loaning also help us with the financial fair play thingy coming in soon, if we don't have to buy players but loan them from Udinese Or Granada, our relatively small income streams can just be used for our staffs wages as the loanee's will be kept on the other clubs books.
the financial fair play is already running and is a farce and cannot be enforced so nothings changed.platini is another fool.
Spot on Doc, taking sugar with my medicine it certainly does help with the bitterest pill!

too many doubts exist over this supposed embargo for my liking.

In reality my best guess is there was no embargo and the club are now owned by people who make announcements when they feel like it and remain unmoved about speculation from the fans.

It may be a sign of their approach to giving the club much needed stability. I wonder if fans forums will be a thing of the past?

corbindallas wrote: You know what, there are some very two faced and easily pleased people on this comments board, the club deliberately withhold information about the transfer embargo, then claim it was something to do with a small admin error and it seems that is all just ok. If it was Bassini he would be blasted to smithereens, the new club admin have deliberately yes that's right deliberately lied to us!!!! The official club statement from Duxbury said everything is sorted with the FL registration when clearly it WAS NOT, this is a blatant lie, then when asked direct by the WO and others they refuse to comment, WHY! What are they hiding, if it was a admin error so be it but to lie and state it was all sorted when it was not is not a great transparent start, in fact it is worse than a no show imo, and now they cleared the matter and announce the signings the simples think nothing more of it.
You just can't please some people!!!
I would just like to apologise to all that in the heat of the moment I responded to this original post.

The red mist obvioulsy came down and I did not realise that it was clearly the ramblings of a mad person and should have been ignored at all costs.
Do you remember the Cresta bear? The one who says its frothy man? That's poor Corby, he's a little frothy around the mouth

Agreed LD too much guessing and far too malicious.

Thank goodness we will have football to talk about in less than three weeks ignoring the Wycombe game.

Word from the training ground is that Garner. Yes, Garner is one of the best finishers and strikers of the ball on the training pitch. Maybe, Zola is bringing back the confidence he needs. In training matchs he is scoring the most. FACT!!
By all reports I think he's worth a tenner for league top scorer ...
