Watford sting Barnet for eight in friendly victory

Watford thumped Barnet 8-0 in a behind-closed-doors friendly at London Colney this afternoon.

The result was never in doubt as the Hornets raced to a 7-0 lead by half-time and then Chris Iwelumo rounded the victory off in the second half.

Jonathan Hogg, Joe Garner, Nyron Nosworthy, Almen Abdi, Mark Yeates and Sean Murray (2) were the other goalscorers.

Watford again named two different sides in each half against Barnet, who are managed by Mark Robson.

Watford first half: Almunia; Hodson, Taylor, Nosworthy, Pudil; Eustace, Hogg, Abdi; Yeates, Garner, Murray.

Watford second half: Bond; Doyley, Bennett, Thompson, Dickinson; Jenkins, Buaben, Forsyth; Anya, Iwelumo, Mingoia.

Well done lads. It needed ti be a high score. If it had been one or two we'd have been moaning at the lack of finishing. Finding the net is a habit and it's good to start early!

Almunia; Hodson, Taylor, Nosworthy, Pudil; Eustace, Hogg, Abdi; Yeates, Garner, Murray.

Good strong starting line up in the 1st half..

Front 3, 4 goals between them which will do there confidence good..

Hogg & Abdi ball playing midfielders, Eustace cleaning up in holding position..

Barnet would have used the game to look at trialist and 1st teamers so a good base to build on for Watford in next 3 game sbefore the league game starts.. Be interesting to see who plays tonight at St Albans.

Interesting first half line-up---Looks to be Zolas idea of first choice allowing for fitness problems (e.g. Hall and Vydra).
I have a feeling that we will be seeing a fair bit of garner this season. Yeates?

Garner has supposedly been the best striker in training - he's liking getting the ball to his feet. Yeates has been played in a more central midfield role and dare I say I watched the Borehamwood match and he didn't look bad in that role (can't believe I just said that) and I believe that is where he has played in the other matches.

On what I saw of Garner during the last season I felt out of place in seeing there was something better to come from the guy. Yeates I find hard to support---but they saw a lot in the guy at Tottenham and at (I believe) Midd'boro'. So maybe Zola may help him, too. Hope so---.

Although there's still some trimming on the cards I don't think there'll be too many more players to leave. If we really are going for it it's essential to have decent back up everywhere plus the youngsters on top. None of the maybe's are on huge salaries and effort spent training them in Zola's ways is money well spent, possibly better than premiership loans.

More likely Nosworthy and Hall. Taylor is loving the role Zola has set for him. Looks far more comfortable on the ball than Nosworthy and looks super fit.

I agree. More to come from Garner - he didn't stand a chance under Dyche's tactics unfortunately (not knocking SD - we had to play that way last year)

Get the ball into his feet and I think he'll prove to be a useful squad player at the minimum - and hopefully more than that. Still need a striker and a winger but it's looking promising at this stage.

I am puzzled. Why have we kept Yeates and Iwelumo? Why have we not sacked Deeney? Why have we signed Fitz Hall when we have Taylor and Nosworthy? Why have we not signed a goal-scoring striker like Danny Graham? Which of our current players is a real goal-scorer?

Lets clear this up for you:

Why have we kept Yeates and Iwelumo? Its still early in the transfer window. We also need someone else to want to buy them off us. Maybe GFZ wants to use them in the squad - especially Yeates.

Why have we not sacked Deeney? Probably not the main focus right now, rightly or wrongly

Why have we signed Fitz Hall when we have Taylor and Nosworthy? Its called having a squad and creating competition. Do other squads only have 11 players?

Why have we not signed a goal-scoring striker like Danny Graham? We have signed a couple of strikers on loan and suspect we are after another main signing. Its only beginning of August. Be patient.

Which of our current players is a real goal-scorer? Based on how SD played - nobody. Based on how GFZ plays - who knows what someone like Garner could do. Murray will get a hatful this year. But as Spain showed in the Euros, the days of relying on a striker are long gone if you have a good enough team. We are playing 4-3-3 so the need for a striker to get every goal is not paramount. The 3 playing behind him will get just as many - the system is designed for that.

Hope that clears it all up for you.

Maybe I can talk you through it. Yeates and Iwelumo, will be given a chance to show their worth, you do not sell the entire squad without lining up better replacements, whereas it is my belief that Yeates is a good squad player and does have some great ability I would not be surprised if Iwelumo is allowed to move on in the coming weeks.

Deeney, I would say the majority of fans would prefer not to see him back at the club I am sure they are just weighing up the best way to deal with the situation with the clubs best interest at heart, again though do not think we would pick up much of a fee if we were to sell him on upon his release with only a year left on his contract, therefore would not be surprised if we get an anouncement shortly regarding terminating his contract.

Hall, Tiny and Nossy will contest the 2 CB places and push each other throughout the season, any additional cover will be provided by Bennett and Thompson.

Garner is more than capable of being that 20 a year goalscorer in the new formation along with the new guy Belek and the other new guy from Udinese (sorry name escapes me), however as shown yesterday think that goals will be be coming from a number of sources this year rather than just relying on the forwards.

I think the strength in depth that Zola is pulling together will be excellent this year, experienced back up throughout.

I still think that a few may go over the coming weeks but I am confident that this will make room for additional quality to continue to come in.

I think that we will still have to be patient but honestly think that we will prove to be a force this year.

Let's hope that the attendences are up at the Vic and we get the pride back....bring it on.

Indeed, those two alone on paper are frightening. From what I have seen on utube of Belek he looks like he will be a handful once fully fit too, great pace and strength. Apparently spurs were after him a few years back for a couple of million.

Who would have dreamt it 2 months ago.

For those concerned about poor little Watford being a feeder club, the best we would have hoped for under LB would have been to sell Mapps, get in a couple of freebies and then wait until September before getting a couple of untested Man Utd youngsters on loan.

Where did this 'garner can be a 20 goal a season man' come from?? He tries hard and works his socks off but the guy scored less than iwelumo last year...to play that high forward role you need a bloke the size of beleck who can hold the ball up and batter into defenders. Hope garner proves me wrong but I just don't see him being the main man. Saying that I think we have a great player in abdi. From what I saw in the bwood game his passing range is fantastic. Pudil also looks a great addition too. I'm very excited about this season and feel the team is strong enough to challenge but do feel we need to add a few more to help support murray. Still time to bring people in and I hope we get some gems. Also- does anyone remember under malky when we played a 4 5 1 and mcginn did brilliantly in behind danny. Very excited to see him back when he's fit- would do well under zola.
