Tottenham Hotspur beat Watford 1-0 in Lloyd Doyley's testimonial

Watford lost 1-0 to Tottenham Hotspur this afternoon as a crowd of almost 10,000 helped celebrate Lloyd Doyley ’s testimonial.

Tottenham played their first team for the game, which also formed a key part of Watford’s pre-season and was the first competitive game played on the new Vicarage Road pitch, which was re-laid this summer.

Only two of Watford’s seven new signings started the match or were included in the squad – Manuel Almunia and Daniel Pudil, who was forced off after just five minutes with a suspected hamstring injury.

It was a game of few chances but plenty of possession for both teams and was decided in the second half through a Jermain Defoe header.

Spurs used the flanks well at times, and got in behind the full backs on several occasions, but, in the first half in particular, the crosses were cleared by men in yellow.

The Hornets were forced into a change after just five minutes as Daniel Pudil went down with what looked like a hamstring injury.

The home side grew into the contest and enjoyed plenty of possession, without really penetrating.

Mark Yeates sent in a teasing cross from the right which forced Brad Friedel to parry and Joe Garner had a shot blocked, after some excellent football, but they were the only half chances for Watford in the opening half an hour.

Tottenham went closest to scoring in the first half when Nyron Nosworthy didn’t jump with William Gallas at Tom Carroll’s corner and the centre back sent a powerful header narrowly over the bar.

Spurs made four changes at the break whilst Watford remained unchanged.

There was a quicker pace to the second half and the visitors scored the opener ten minutes into the second half when Walker got in behind Dickinson on the right and his cross was headed home powerfully by Defoe.

Watford had more of a cutting edge after the break and following a few nearly moments, Mark Yeates went agonisingly close to equalising just after the hour mark, when he cut on to his right foot inside the area and curled a shot narrowly wide.

Spurs were far from their best but they went close to grabbing another goal when Walker picked out Bale with a deep cross but the winger headed straight at Almunia.

Doyley received a warm reception from the crowd as he departed the pitch with 15 minutes remaining, with Lee Hodson coming on in his place.

Andros Townsend is not remembered fondly by Watford fans after his brief loan spell a couple of seasons ago but he showed his talent as he fired in a low right-footed shot from 30 yards which Almunia had to parry away.

Watford: Almunia; Doyley (Hodson 75), Taylor, Nosworthy, Pudil (Dickinson 5); Eustace, Hogg (Forsyth 67), Buaben (Massey 78); Yeates, Garner (Iwelumo 58), Murray (Mingoia 84).

Subs: Bond, Bennett, Thompson, C Smith, Jenkins.

Spurs: Friedel (Cudicini HT); Naughton (Walker HT), Kaboul, Gallas (Vertonghen HT), Assou-Ekotto; Jenas (Sigurdsson HT), Livermore (Bentley 78); Carroll (Huddlestone 67), Lennon, Bale (Townsend 75); Defoe (Kane 67).

Subs: Bassong, Dawson.

Referee: Trevor Kettle.

Attendance: 9,218.

Garner big chris gavin massey wouldnt score 5 goals between them all season...was this just a final look at the tosh we have before the clear out and if so i wish i had known and i wouldnt have wasted my time and money and watched olympics instead. Yeats bye Massey bye Chris iilweemoooo bye Lloyd bye even thou dickinson had a decent game -bye....feel liked ive been coned today by my own club. If zola dare comes out to say he saw positives today then the man is deluded and wont last the season.

Watford played well keeping possession up to final third where it broke down, only 1 shot at goal. Yeates played well. Zola's last chance to assess last years squad, and respect Doyley testimonial by playing the players Doyley knows. Expect the. Team to look different come Palace away, but expect the Gillingham and Wycombe games to continue experimenting. This game was to honour Lloyd, so those expecting 100% full on match were mis perceived

Not sure what people expected today as it was basically a pre season game. I didn't go, for this reason. As for the new signings, where was Abdi and Anya? I did expect them to be involved. Hope Pudil is ok? Beleck, Vydra, Hall are not fit so they were never going to be available. Might be a few leaving this week. I understand Big Chris has been told he can go. Could well be a lot more deadwood as well.
New striker arrives tomorrow so it's not all bad and remember we are playing a completely new way so don't expect to be top six straight away. e may need to be a little patient.

How can those 2 sentences not be contradictory ? He'supposed to be an attacking, creative midfielder/forward ? Being comfortable on the ball is not enough.

Very boring game today - looked like a fitness run out. However, where was teh big family day event that was being harked about. Wandered around for ages with my kid and all we saw was 1 slightly weary balloon man with a queue the size of Elton John's wardrobe! And they ran out of everything other than chips BEFORE half time.......we may have changed ownership but the management still has much to work on.

It was all a bit soporific, but then again it was a pre-season friendly. I think the answer to the Yeates contradiction is that we did lack a cuting edge and creativity - no surprises there, perhaps, given the personnel. Yeates definitely looked better, though, playing more centrally than as a winger - this was one of his better games and if we are going to play him this loooks like the best role for him. But it would be good to think that once the new signings are up to match fitness we'll have an improved option. Not fair to slag him off for today's performance, though.

The positive was that we did look more comfortable on the ball than might have been expected against top class opposition (albeit that they didn't break sweat for much of the match) - the downside was that we never looked much like scoring.

Early days - but Amunia looked solid, and was talking effectivey to the back four. Reports of Garner being reinvigorated under the Zola regime may be premature - ran hard but still didn't ever look like scoring a goal. Taylor looked like he might enjoy himself in a passing team.

why cant we buy a proven striker who has played in the english leagues!! we seem to be the dumping ground for all the previously injured young players from udinese...players like baldock and campbell would be by far better options that these loans. i dont understand, our owners have money but have spent nothing so far on our team. is that have they have financial security? spend nothing on players and hope one comes through academy and get income that way...not convinced so far.

Simply no need for those comments. He may well not be the favoured choice going forward, however to say he has fooled the masses and isn't a footballer is ridiculous. Should we trust your opinion or the opinions of the six much more qualified managers who played him on a regular basis over the past 10 years?

Precisely how The Pozzo's do it and they do it well so be patient. We'll need at least 10 games to bed down properly.

By the way, can someone please tell me how the pitch looked after 1 1/2 games of footy and all that rain? Cheers.

The pitch looked bloody marvellous even at the end. Not sure who selected the pink parameter though, would have gone for green or blue myself, or maybe black would have looked good.

Great new built in sprinklers for watering the away team whilst warming up at half time too. Previously had to drag the hosepipe across the pitch.

No advertising on show today throughout the ground, so will look different come Ipswich for sure.

Some of you are unreal!!!
That was a FRIENDLY, ie a warm up match, a run out to improve fitness, a chance to experiment, but mainly a thank you to doyley for over TEN years of giving 100% in every game he's played, yes I'll agree he's not the most blessed footballer but he deserves our thanks for giving his all for as long as he has. everyone moans about the lack of loyalty in football these days so give him a break.
Anyway we lost 1 0 to the spurs 1st team, we'd have accepted that result if it was the FA cup forth round.
It's next Saturday that's important, this match was mainly about building up fitnes, and sticking a few quid in doyley's back pocket.

OK one game down and what have we learnt?

Over an hour before the game the new large caterer had no food in the lower rookery. Did Sodexco or Compass quote? or are the new boys mates with the new boys....Suggest Pozzos investigate along with WO.

The new pitch looked good but worryingly already worn in warm up area, but it does allow passing unlike the tip we played on before. Well done BAS.

Our new goalie was very vocal and can catch the ball...well done Zola.

Yeates and Forsyth continue to impersonate footballers and Garner well he is not up to it...but we knew all this last year. Big Chris came on caused a little discomfort and will do better against some championship clubs but is woefully slow but a good ball winner in the air.

Disappointed with a lack of the ew loanees and Fitz Hall, but pleased that Prince looked fit.

The team on display were OK but with the right additions will be good.

Overall, the ground (excl.pitch) but including large screen still disappoints but the lads still give 100% and the fans turned up for Lloyd and that was good.

Well done Zola for a good start and i enjoyed the passing which the pitch made possible along with GFZ.

Did any of you see the groundsmen shaking their heads and taking photos, at the new pitch, as the team left after their warm up.

From where I could see it after only 5 - 10 mins of warm up it cut up pretty bad.

Yesterday was a friendly and some people on here really need to realise that. Spurs didnt exactly set the game alight and they were filled with internationals from back to front. The pitch looked good and in all honnesty, if you look at any top ground, the emirates, wembley etc, the areas where players do their quick feet exersizes always cut up badly, thats why they do them off the actually pitch. Im sure the team will look completely different in a couple of weeks but im pleased Lloyd got his big day.

Many comments on this site simply beggar belief. Complaints for just about everything - from players brought in by the previous regime, to the lack of new players on show, to abusing the most loyal & hardworking player we will ever see, to the catering arrangements, our performance in a pre-season friendly against a top 4 Premiership team and the way the owners intend to run our club as a viable business.

What is the matter with everybody?

Just be thankful WFC is still trading and is now owned by people with adequate resources who understand football and have a proven track record of delivering success.

We are in a far better place than we could possibly have dreamed about a few months back and I'm sure we will succeed. But please, let's be sensible, remain patient and do not expect it to happen overnight.

Looking forward to the start of the Championship season in 2 weeks time.

Suggest Oftaw you read what is written.

Complaint about lack of food at a catering establishment an hour plus before kick off is not unreasonable. and needs to be looked into.

To criticise players who were there last year is no reflection, on Zola (thought Almunia was good) or Pozzos, unless they are playing for us later in season and yes Bas was responsible for new pitch which was overdue even before he bought club.
So not sre what your problem is.
BTW please support yor comment about previous owner. He is history but despite that no evidence to support your ill thought out comments and BTW the finances were sh*t before he bought WFC and were certainly badly run under homer, ashton and winter ably supported by rubbish finance staff. eg.a multimillion pound hole in cash flow under prudent management. So cut the insults, support your scurrilous claims with fact if you can otherwise be like the Rookery were on Sunday.
In meantime roll on saturday and lets see the new guys.

Cannot understand why any supporters would want to give any credit to Baz whatsoever. It may not be what you want to hear but it was Ashcroft (as the major bond-holder and agreeing for Baz to purchase club for £440k) who saved us from Admin not the Bankrupt.

What happened on the pitch was remarkable last year and papered over the cracks in the finances that were widening behind the scenes.

I have no idea what Baz's agenda was, but he certainly left us in a sorry state - heading for administration for sure with loads of debts that happened on his watch - inc the taxman.

We've had the mother of all escapes, so let's just be happy and give the Pozzo's time to settle in and sort everything out, including the catering!

Simply no need for those comments. He may well not be the favoured choice going forward, however to say he has fooled the masses and isn't a footballer is ridiculous. Should we trust your opinion or the opinions of the six much more qualified managers who played him on a regular basis over the past 10 years?
U could always try trusting ur own eyes...cant control a ball, cant kick properly with either foot, can only head the ball sideways, has very little positional sense, the majority of opposition managers pick him as a weakness and play far post balls for an easy free header or play everything down his flank to guarantee easy corners or easy crosses...i could continue Ross but ur obviously blinded by ur 100 per cent yellow tinted glasses and are happy to clap at any old dross....clap away...

Richard, this post, together with your slightly earlier one is 100% spot-on. Certainly two of the most sensible posts I have read on here for many a while. I suggest that the Pozzo dissenters and the pro-Baz group read them again and take careful note.
What you saying Richards posts are on par with my ode to Frannypants?
SAH, I'm hurt and dismayed!
Right sensible head on, Richard is spot on, can't believe anyone can still be defending Bas, but I think his fan club Is down to two.
Bas fan 1/. Corby
Bas fan 2/. Corbys other chin

Ha, you know I still love ya, ya silly a*se :-)

Relieved! Can sip my bud in good heart now my friend!
By the way, I was having a pre match meal ( chippy top of market st) when this guy and his lovely wife asked if I was called Dan, turned out we knew each other from a few years back and we talked all things Watford. This progressed onto Forums and the WO comments. To cut a long story short turned out to be the poster D. unstable! Lovely guy
What a small world eh?
I also watched the match with my sparring partner Jason who posts as... Jason!
So the Wobby Forum crew is getting bigger by the day, led by Uncle Buck!

I admire the fact he has stayed for 10 years but he has robbed a living. I certainly don't hate him but just isn't a footballer. That may have been his swan song.
No yellow tinted glasses for me whatsoever, and why would I be happy with any old dross? Agreed that Doyley ain't the greatest (otherwise he'd clearly be playing elsewhere), but to dismiss him as having fooled the masses is as inaccurate as one of his less effective crosses. Six managers regularly played him over the past 10 years (all ex professional players, of which two were internationals, one is now an England coach, and one is the new Liverpool manager). Basically you are telling me that they all got it horrendously wrong, which I find odd.

Tiger my reply to Oftaw dealt with food for two lines the rest on the club and football.
As for your comments about Doyley they are totally out of order. As a defender his man marking overall has been very good, his distribution less so. However, when compared to Mariappa who could only ever kick a long ball out of defence, much the same a DeMerit, Doyley's distribution was better. That is why he has been at the club as a senior for ten years. In terms of being a footballer he leaves the likes of Garner, Yeates and Forsyth for dead, and unlike Hodson he does not lose his confidence for all to see and give up. Did you wonder why Hodson disappeared from the scene last year or for long parts under Malky. Lloyd gives of his best and by our standards that has been pretty good over the years.

Thats where we will NEVER agree Chris...too many fans are happy with the fact Doyley gives his best...no one denies that...but if all u desire is 100 per cent then maybe you could save yourselves a few hundered quid per year and pop over Oxhey playing fields or Cassiobury Park where you can see dozens giving there all every weekend for free!! Hodson disappeared because he is as bad as Doyley and the aforementioned trio have more footballing talent in their jock straps than Mr 100 per cent although probably not the luck, application or desire...
