Gianfranco Zola admits Martin Taylor's sale to Sheffield Wednesday did unsettle Watford ahead of Derby County defeat

Watford head coach Gianfranco Zola admitted Martin Taylor’s departure unsettled his side going into today’s heavy 5-1 defeat at Derby County.

Zola had Taylor pencilled in to once again lead out Watford, with John Eustace still injured, but the centre back was sold to Sheffield Wednesday last night, not long before the transfer window closed.

Carl Dickinson came into the side at centre half, in the only change to the line-up which beat Birmingham City so convincingly last week.

Derby took the lead on 16 minutes and were 3-0 up before half-time. The home side secured the victory in the second half with two more goals, and Matej Vydra could only add a consolation strike to make it 5-1.

When asked whether Taylor’s departure contributed to Watford’s poor defensive display, Zola said: “Martin Taylor is a very influential player for this team, we all know that.

“That certainly didn’t help our situation because this terrible transfer market is crazy because it unsettles everything.

“Yes his sale didn’t help our situation. I know Martin has been important for this team and how important he has been, on and off the pitch, but unfortunately we lost him and the rest of the team must take his responsibilities and do better. And when I say the team, it includes myself.”

Zola said that, in hindsight, he would have changed “some things” but stated the starting line-up would not have been one of the alterations.

He said: “I would have probably changed some things but some things were difficult to change because they were unexpected.

“I would have made the same choices and I would have put the same team on the pitch but I would have been more aware of the dangers of the opposition in certain circumstances.”

Zola admitted his players need to play on the front foot more, and ensure they have possession in the attacking third, rather than going back to the defence and goalkeeper.

The Italian also partly blamed himself for the defeat, as he admitted he did not place enough emphasis on defending set pieces. Derby scored two, possibly three, goals from set plays this afternoon and it is an area where the Rams have been dangerous all season.

Zola said: “There are not many positives today because it was a big defeat so therefore I am not here to be crazy enough to say otherwise.

“It was a poor performance. The start was ok but we had a poor reaction to the first goal and we stopped playing, and that was it.

“I think the result was too big [a margin] but fair enough, they deserved to win and in the Championship, if you give away cheap goals like the first two then you are in trouble and that is what happened.”

When asked what was different compared to last week, he replied: “Against Birmingham we started well and caused them a lot of problems and we scored straight away, which created the perfect circumstances for us to play our football.

“Today it was the opposite. We started ok but I would like to see more courage in our play when we play this football.

“As soon as we conceded the goal we stopped playing and that is not good enough.

“You have to be brave; if you have the time to turn and play football then you need to play forwards, not backwards all the time. Otherwise you are playing with the defenders rather than the midfielders.

“Also I said to the players that I apologise because I underestimated the other team when it came to set plays and I said that to the players, it was my fault.

“But we can be better with the ball and that was something that we didn’t do today.”

Watford created very little this afternoon and were restricted to just a handful of efforts on goal.

“Yes that [the attacking side of our game] was the disappointing thing because we know the way we play will mean we can concede sometimes but we need to create more.

“In the first half, the way we started, we had the possibility to cause them problems but we didn’t do that because we were locked [in our half] and that was not good.”

The first clear sign that Zola has zero control of player signing or perhaps team selection?

Watching Nani gesticulating like Briatore in the Directors Box was sickening. He is the man who is responsible for the influx of all these players. There is no way Zola wants over 40 pro's - Fergie would struggle to manage a squad so big and the split in the camp is so obvious its frightening.

We should all be grateful there is a club to support and clearly Zola's ideas have some exciting indications but unless the size of the squad is dramatically reduced and Zola (Not Duxberry and Nani) is solely in charge then we will have more of these results than the Birmingham one.

Lets all stay positive and help create a team spirit on the pitch and in the stands

The galling thing is - given Taylors contract was up in June and Wednesday did not play him today - if we had said to them - he is yours from monday and we will push the season loan through as soon as the Window opens next week - at 10 to 11 on deadline day - they would have said yes - then we would not have been a centre half down - in 2 weeks - no problem - we will have 5 fit centre halves!

I was reporting on the AFC Wimbledon game today and had a chat to Dale Bennett before the kick off. Got the impression the youngsters at the academy know they are not going to get "a fair rub of the green" with this administration and most will have to look elsewhere to get a game. Just to make his debut day, Dale didn't clear the ball properly and a Dagger sent the ball straight back into the Dons net! Another costly mistake. The game ended 2 -2. I wonder if Adam Thompson faired any better?

His side lost to a Britt A goal...

I went to the Under 18s game and they won 3-0.

Spoke to a couple of parents and they said Zola is popular but admitted the youth team wasn't the Pozzo's number one in terms of importance.

As for today...it rather begs the question if Fitz Hall is ready?

We are all gutted after a score line like this but slagging off isnt the way forward. Zola will get it right and the Pozzo's will back him with the resources required. Theese things happen... Last season City spanked Utd at Old Trafford.....Utd spanked Arsenal....Arsenal spanked Spurs....Sunderland spanked Chelsea and on and on! Whats important is you learn from this and move on.
Yes there are several players that i would like to see move on and a few of these have only played recently as others are not match fit ie Dickinson, Iwelumo, Forsyth, Garner and Yeates! Once the loanees have been fully assessed maybe 2/3 will return to there respected clubs by the New Year, we off load the above and permenant transfers of a couple of players to improve our first team will happen? Keep the faith chaps its very early in the season still nearly 40 more games to play!”

One player leaving is not always a problem but look at what happened in the context of WFC. We sack a manager who knows the club well and bring in a new guy who doesn't get so invoved with everything as we have a Director of Football and owners who know football...this then occurs

Taylor we are told wants out and is allowed to go. We have sold Mariappa and given Murfin away. So the next guy to use is Bennett....Oops we have just sent him out on loan So Sean would have then put Lloyd in as a centre back a position he has played before and replace him with Lee or Adam. Oops Adam has been loaned out and I suspect Lee is injured. So Dicko who is not the best is drafted in. Well hold on a minute what about all the guys from Udinese some of them are experienced defenders but of course they are not match fit either bcause they were or are injured. The word Buffoon or Mickey Mouse or maybe 'you don't know what you are doing' springs to mind
So Rover one man going was not the problem.
What may be the problem is the West Ham supporters comments about Nani are coming true and please do not blame Zola it is not his fault.

For God's sake.....we lost a game and we lost it badly...Taylor's departure happened. Get over it...we move on. This time last year, Dyche was truggling in finding his feet...we had sold our main striker and lost a few to Cardiff etc and look where we ended up in spite of Bas. Many so called WFC fans were calling for Dyche's head..saying he didn't know what he was doing etc etc.

Face a BIG fact...had the Pozzos not bought Watford....where would we be now. Think really hard!! It seems a bit crazy what they are doing in terms of all these loanees and goes against was Nani said about keeping the core of WFC. However, they have performed miracles with Udinese and Granada. It will take time, before the dust settles. Judge the new brigade afte 1 season, not after 4 games!!

To all the moaners...where was your money when they were selling....what makea you such an expert...haven't you learnt anything in life not to judge too early....it could have been a lot worse. We could have ended up like Luton!!

Zola comes across as exactly what he is: a man utterly out of his depth.

The Pozzos should have kept Dyche, added 3-4 players to last year's squad, with the option to strengthen further if need be. Instead, they arrogantly, and rather clumsily, threw the baby out with the bathwater, and now we are all over the place.

Zola = nice guy, great player, terrible manager.

Just back from Derby. Firstly no one has acknowledged that the Rams were terrific. They completely bossed the midfield and were clinical in their finishing. Last week Birmingham surrendered the midfield to us by playing deep; this week Derby were in our faces and won possession in midfield. With Taylor gone there was no leadership in the field. It's impossible to say absolutely that he would have prevented the goals but what was clear that without him that our defence was chaotic. There was no leadership on the bench either as Zola slipped further and further into his seat. It took 5 goals before he made subs and they did make a difference giving us a conslation goal.
But the worst thing we now know is that Zola has no control on players IN and OUT. It's clear Taylor was sold over his head. If he is not prepared to stamp his authority on team composition and selection now his position wil be even weaker in 6 months time. The owners will expect loanees to be played; that's why they have been sent here. This will compromise team selection. Zola's weakness could end up being the team's weakness. You can't have more than one boss running a team!

What a total load of rubbish Monster Plank! Pozzo's should of kept Dyche? Pozzo's should of kept the same squad and added 2 or 3? What planet are u on? Tell u what maybe Pozzo's shouldn't of saved our club and let us go into administration ay? In that way all are players of any value would of left for naff all and we would be bottom of the league on -10 points!
Also u wally u say we should keep the quality of uwulumo, garner, Yeats, dickinson, etc etc the players that get 90% of the stick for repeated poor performances! In a few weeks when the first 11 and subs works its way into the regular side things will be good!

Holly68 says...
9:39pm Sat 1 Sep 12

My take on today and a few things :

1. The Pozzo's own the club, but just like Granada have NOTHING to do with the day to day running or decide who goes, who stays etc, that is Purely Nani and Duxbury, so no criticism of Pozzo's, they provide funds and have underwritten debt, however it is UNLIKELY they will get involved, unless they are unhappy with Duxbury, Nani or Zola who they would fire. The Pozzo ownership is for the Long Term, Duxbury, Nani and Zola are only here whilst they show progress. I for one really like Zola, I think he has lots of integrity, he is a true gentleman, however the jury's out on Duxbury and Nani !

2. Zola picks the team, is responsible for identifying the type of players he needs, however Nani decides who to bring in. Nani has decided to bring all the loans in, purely to try and kick start a promotion push, without creating extra financial risk. Zola will pick the bones out and return those not wanted . In January, Zola will have a much better idea on gaps so movement and incomings more manageable

3. Zola didnt know Tiny was going to leave last night, he would of kept Adam or Dale as cover for today had he known. Taylor left for double money, double contract length AND cos he knows he is not guaranteed first team given the incomings. Yes he could of stayed and proved himself better than the incomings, however double pay, double contract and less competition, he is a shrewd and intelligent footballer, good luck to him, Zola is gutted he has gone, but it was not his decision. My view is that Nani SHOULD of offered Tiny more money, longer contract and reassured him he will play, but clearly Nani believes the loanees will play better football, jury's out

4. Zola made a mistake as he admitted. He underestimated Derby, Sammon was a real handful, and playing Dickinson out of position was a mistake. He should of put Cassetti or Doyley CH. Dickinson tried his best, but was not good enough.

5. Neuton and Ekstrand only agreed to the move yesterday, thy arrive in uk next week so could not play. Chalobah also did not know where he was going until yesterday, so again joins squad after England U21 duty

6. Yes it was poor, we had a slow tempo, midfield weren't showing for ball, meaning cul de sacs and back to keeper. However up until 1st goal was not much in it, other than Nigel Clough emploring his troops to get in our faces. 1st set piece, 1st goal, Dicko and Pudil at fault. 2nd set piece, 2nd goal, Nosworthy and Doyley at fault. 3rd goal we gave ball away in midfield, then Dicko got roasted by excellent Sammon. 3rd set piece, hit bar, Doyley and Nosworthy at fault. 4th set piece 4th goal, and so on and so on. With NO leader at the back, Nosworthy had his worst game, he needs a leader (Mapps/Tiny) alongside him, Doyley also needs a leader in back four, Dickinson tried hard, put some strong challenges in, but got found wanting other times, but at least he ave his all, if war broke out you'd want him on your side. However he lacks the quality to stay in Zola powered new wave football moving forwards. My ratings

Almunia : not at fault, other than picking ball out net 5 times wasn't overly busy either

Doyley :Poor

Nosworthy :Poor

Dickinson : probably tried harder than most, lacks quality and out of position

Pudil : off the pace and a wake up call, most championship teams will play like this against us

Hogg : never seen him moaning all the time like this, off the pace

Yeates : back to old inconsistent self

Abdi : he must of thought it was a training game, stuck in 1st gear and caught in possession

Vydra : well marshalled by left back, but keeps trying and never gives up

Murray : poor, overweight, seems to care more for his social life, out drinking night before matches, even his friends are telling him to be more professional, needs dropping until fit

Big Chris : tried hard but little support from midfield

Zola : Poor team selection, Poor research of Derby

Subs : improvement but already game over

Fans : Very Poor subdued support from the off

So all in all we got what we ALL DESERVED, a smacked bum !

However, lose 1-0 or 25-0, it's only 3 points we didn't gain. 6 points out of 12 is fair return for a team in transition.

Let's learn from today, give Zola the time to pick his Top 25 from the 40, let's judge after 15 games, so we might get spanked at Bolton, but it's a marathon season, not a sprint, IN ZOLA I TRUST !!!!

Also we have a left back to come into this side who has played good level of football in Europe PLUS a centre back with champions league experience? Also we still have two players in midfield and another striker who look like being extremely good signings for this level of league football! Theese players will change this side when fit! Lets give Zola a bit of a break here. Nani is the man responsible for transfers, incoming and outgoing. I suspect that having received an offer for Taylor, and being under some pressure from the Pozzos about squad size and finances, Nani took the chance to bring in money and cut the squad, over Zolas head. Remember that Nani/Duxbury sold the Watford project to the Pozzos, and they will now be under pressure to make it work. The Pozzos are not known for patience. Further, I have heard that Nani/Zola were pressurized into taking many of the loans by the Pozzos, who wanted to free the Udinese dressing room from those players at the lower end of the pecking order. (which dosn't mean they are not class!). this i heard from some Italian contacts.
Time will tell, and give judgement, on Zola. As i said last season, don't judge until 13 games into the season. However, if Zola struggles, the Pozzos have a record of rapid managerial change

Not entirely true. Sheffield Weds have been chasing for a while, made an offer yesterday afternoon. At 7pm it wasn't happening, however by 8pm he said he wanted to leave, he'd signed by 9.30pm.

Just wish Zola he said to Nani I want him to stay, and Nani made him a offer to stay. I think Zola is a realist but Nani is convinced the Loans will be superior, gut says it will be a mix of both

A spanking at start of the season with the new management and players having a sharp lesson about what the Championship is not a disaster - (don't we normally lose at Derby?) - if it focusses minds and action and we use that to build it might be a useful leson too! I doubt that many italian mangers have the finally say on who is boughtand sold. Still happier today than i was with Baz in charge in June.

If Zola felt it was too late to ship in another player (If, indeed, anyone was available) then why did he use Dickinson, who, surely, he must consider as surplus to requirements, and is second in his chosen position to Pudil? Would it have made more sense to bring in Cassetti, and move Doyley to CH---he has played there before. Or didn't Zola realise that Doyley has that experience? Just a thought

Since there is virtually no Watford staff from pre-Zola (Chamberlain apart), then possibly no-one had the knowledge to advise Zola about Doyley---he certainly didn't seem to realise the option in his comments. Not that I'm saying it would have made a difference to the game. Just making a point.

To quote Zola from last week(not tothe word, too lazy to research) " we dont get carried away with a win or with a defeat" (something like that). You live and learn, but you learn more from adversity. We are very much a work in progress and it will take time to find the right fit,but we will get there and when we do this result will be a distant memory!

Wow, the modern world. Please forgive me for sounding cynical, we lost a game today 5-1 and yes it was a drubbing. But the over reaction is concerning. Last weekend we bossed a very poor Birmingham side and many, myself included were very happy with that, today's result is hugely dissapointing but people on here are already sounding desperate. I do think that we have too many loanees and I do not think it is right, in fact it sounds to me like there are more comings than goings and right now is does not make sense to me. The big picture is, as I believe, that the owners want to take WFC onto a bigger stage, but by attempting to do so there will be defeats, mistakes and frustrations. But let's try and keep it in perspective, 4 games in, so many more to come. I know fans are passionate but lets not be quite so quick to pull the email trigger, ten games in and I think we wll know exactly what kind of squad we have.

The above except Murray pete50 will not be in the real 1st team squad of 18 come October mate. They would of been assessed by Zola by now of there capabilities and are only getting game time so they are match fit come the loan window. The loaned players I earlier spoke of will be our regular left back, right back, and creative midfielders and goal scorers. Murray, Doyley, Hogg and maybe even Deeney if he proves to Zola he is sorry and 100% committed to this side will be the only regular players in this 18 and maybe Eustace when ready can be our enforcer as we may need him to add a bit of steel in certain games! We haven't seen the best 11 take the pitch yet but trust me it will happen very soon

I also went to the game yesterday with my two boys and thought the performance was a shambles. particularly defensively.

Despite that the comments are completely over the top.In my view it was the old guard that let us down and proved that they aren't up to it.
Compare how their guy lead the line with the mobility of Big Chris.
After the euphoria of last week everything is doom and gloom now.
It aint the first game I've been to where we've been thumped and it won't be the last.

It will serve as a good reality check but for people to be on Zola's back and say things would have been better under the old regime is pathetic.
Still no doubt WHEN we hammer someone everything will be wonderful again.

Richard - Come On You Golden Boys! says...

Clearly not our finest hour, although not the end of the world either. Zola must be given time and patience to get things right in the dressing room and on the pitch with all these players he's now got.

We must recognise and buy into the fact that we are not WFC in isolation and are now part of the Pozzo football group.

We will not like all the decisions, especially in the short term, but there was and is no alternative to their takeover and from my viewpoint the positives clearly outweigh the negatives.

However, the Centre half situation yesterday was a shambles and shows Zola is not calling the shots. But he must've bought into the overall plan when he took the job and we need to do the same and get behind him and the new team.

He's now got a fortnight to pull things around and produce a better performance at Bolton. Will be interesting to see the teamsheet for that one.

yes there has been an over-reaction, just as there was last week after the encouraging game vs brum.

Bear in mind we have not played a top half team, or one that will finish top half, yet.

It's not fair to blame all on the pre GZ players - Putil & Abdi were awful too. I left after goal #5.

There were exceptional circumstances yesterday - the games after the break will give a better indication of our prospects.

Respect GZ's honesty, and like the guy, but he shoud never underestimate ANY team in this league.

There seems to be a lot of feeling that Zola isn't calling the shots here. I can't speak intelligently about whether or not that's the case, but neither do I see any evidence of it. He's always come across as a man of principle and integrity, and to play Lloyd, Nos and Dickinson in the back four yesterday suggests to me that he's giving the old guard a chance to prove themselves. If he just strolled in, binned these guys off and immediately started playing the new crop, he'd be battered on these message boards for ripping the heart out of the club. As it is, they've been given a go - and may continue to be for a while - but have clearly shown (and not only yesterday) that they're not up to playing the kind of expansive passing football that we'd all like to see... and which I'm sure will ultimately see us promoted.

I also think that the latest players coming in with an option to buy is not only sensible, given that we don't know what division we'll be playing in next year, but is a nice statement from the Pozzos that (a) they're not going anywhere anytime soon, and (b) their intention isn't simply to let us turn these into great players before flying them back to Italy. If they settle quickly and perform well in the English game, we'll have them.

The squad is clearly too big - probably 20 players over the ideal - but given time, I'm sure we'll see a lot of them (Forsyth, Yeates, Garner, Lloyd, Dickinson, Nosworthy, Jenkins etc) shipped out... not least because the Pozzos are businessmen - and why pay more wages than you have to?! It's a lot of change happening in a short space of time, but we overachieved last season with the players we had, so new blood is a requirement if we want to go up. I think we just need to embrace what's happening, compare it to what could have been (Baz marching us into administration) and accept that change had to happen - change, in this case, for the good (ultimately).

In answer to Watford9140, can I recommend the September edition of When Saturday Comes (available in WH Smith etc) for a considered article on how the Pozzo acquisitions of Watford and Granada have gone down in Udine? The answer, in brief, is not very well. In fact the Udinese fans have written an open letter to Old Man Pozzo pleading for some of the funds to be diverted back towards their club and away from Granada and Watford. The Udinese coach is also quoted as saying that he has so many players nominally on the club's books that he has no idea who half of them are and that the club's main objective, despite Champion's League qualification (although I see they've already been eliminated) is to survive in Serie A. It's a really interesting piece which I'd recommend to anyone genuinely interested in how the Pozzo's run their clubs. One other aspect is that despite their recent successes the Udinese fans have voted with their feet to such a degree that their season ticket numbers are now down to a level similar to our own.

Even their own don't like this set up, which is funny because all this is set up to channel large amounts of money back into Udinese.

No, not at all - no underlying mischief intended, I was just trying to answer a question and give a fair representation of what was written. What I didn't add was that the fans letter also included, 'We don't understand why you continue to deny, until the very last minute, that players will be leaving when the evidence clearly shows that negotiations have been advanced for some time......as bianconeri fans we have to be able to dream, there has to be an objective that we can reach together: squad, coach, club and supporters.' Like I said, it's an interesting read but obviously everybody on here can choose to believe whatever they like.

To be honest I think a lot are happy to hide behind the 'they saved us' wall and will only peep over it to gloat at doubters if something good happens and will probably just bury their heads once that wall falls down completely.

Today Udinese are the flagship of the Pozzo football empire quite rightly so. But in answer to your question i suspect they would be happy as now it gives them the chance to strengthen there side with a new crop of players. Most of our loan players are fringe first team players .Bit like a conveyor belt. All in house money though.

If we'd won, we would be second, it's early doors, 3 points from second, 3 points from 2nd bottom, if we were a pair of scales, we'd be nicely in the middle.

Now with negative energy from the doom mongers, we will slip down the scales, with positive energy we could rise up the scales, one thing for sure, a few weeks ago we wouldn't of been on any scales !!!!

Change is happening, it is not an unhappy dressing room, it's natural for those fearing their place to feel insecure, for those that speak same language to sit next to each other on the coach, and getting the foreign legion to learn English is a good thing ! Or do we get the English to learn Italian !? When in Rome my friends.

On the subject of Rome, it wasn't built in a day .....

Football as we knew it has changed. Vydra has given 100% in every game, Almunia is much more confident than his predecessor, Abdi and Pudil have shown quality and yesterday will be a learning curve, Anya looks lively, the rest haven't had enough chances yet, unlike our old guard who can't play football on the ground to the same technical level.

If the old guard play a training match v the new players, I know who my money's on !!

Four games in, let's review at Xmas, not after 4 games. Who knows Neuton "might" be Taylor on Steriods, don't judge when he hasn't even arrived.

Our support was poor yesterday, it was 0-0 for 25 minutes, it was a morgue, we the fans have to play our part, so we got what we deserved.

You have to break a few "Happy" eggs to make an Omlette !!

Its 30 years ago we went on a journey, it's time to try a new venture !

Rise Up, let's pull together, COYH

They think they were a little club, with no prospects, facing obscurity, then comes Don Pozzo who turned them into a club taking them into the top flight and challenging for a European championship, they have a small fan base. They then did the same with Granada and are two months ( that's all) into a similar project with Watford.
Why are people do intent on finding something negative? It'll be no different to here with Numptys wishing for the 'good old days' and those who like abd embrace change.
Anyway, it's the same as those asking what GT thinks, it'll go ahead regardless. Que sera sera

I don't think people are looking for negativity - they're looking for information, which strikes me as the obvious thing to do. Even the blind Pozzo evangelists on here have to acknowledge that we're on the receiving end (be it good or bad) of something that's never before happened in British football. Why is asking questions about Udinese and Granada negative? The 'History' section on the English language version of the Udinese web-site should be the start-point for anyone with a serious interest in our football club. Fascinating stuff.

The simple truth of this matter is the fact that both Udinese and Granada have benefited emensley from Pozzo ownership! And I along with plenty of other true Watford fans are getting rather board of the negativity of the Pozo ownership after only a few months! Grow up haters! Graham Taylor and Elton John were part of our fantastic success a very long time ago and what's to say that the Pozzo's won't repeat this?

DuffmanWFC says...

Just another fact: the only decent owner we have ever had in our 120 odd year history was Sir Elton but he is long gone as a football club owner! Since he sold up all those years ago we have been owed by crooks, liers, cheats and bankrupts! This will most decently be our best opportunity to be owned buy people who want to do the right thing and grow our club and all some people want to do is **** and moan!

bushey tales says...

I think I get the gist although much of that is tricky to interpret. I'd just urge a bit of caution in positioning yourself as representative of Watford fans. We'll wait and see how the silent majority, rather than a couple of dozen people on this site, react but I would suggest that the actual crowd for the Birmingham game was as small as we've seen at a league game for years. I know it was given as 11,000 but of course that includes all season-ticket holders. It looked to me as if there were barely 9,000 in the ground which would be worrying. Don't get me wrong - I want a successful WFC as much as anyone but the blind optimism and assumption that just because these people aren't Bassini and Co (and let's all thank God for that), then they're good for our club, is a huge and as yet unsubstantiated leap of faith. Maybe it'll be good, maybe it won't. Remember Rumi Vergee and The Milkmen. The jury's out.

On Sunday Judas was asked whether he felt let down by Andy Carroll being lent out without a replacement being recruited He dodged the question. Jamie Redknapp said whoever did it was seriously naive and had let Judas down.

In the case of WFC Zola was let down totally by Nani who got rid of taylor along with lending out Bennett and Thompson.

On hearing more about the incredible rise of Grenada, it appears whatever is said we will be given enough reasonable players by Udinese to survive and maybe do better. The price we pay is we lose our local and national players for a period of time. In the longer term if things go well we may well be equal partners with Udinese but this is sometime off, it does however beg the question as to whether w need Nani. On Friday he stabbed Zola in the back and cost us the chance of competing for three points and he seems powerless to stop injured/unfit players being sent to us and often the priority is not there. We have a weakness at Centre Back, Striker and central midfield. To date these positions have not successfully been addressed. Maybe we have players on our books who can fill these positions BUT they are either injured or unfit or worse still deemed not to be up to it by the manager.
I think the Pozzos will be good for us, Duxberry and Zola may be and all need to be given time but Nani's start as Mr Boss of football has been extremely disappointing to date. The Happy Clappers may not agree and of course will base their responses on their opinion being fact but I am sure we all hope Nani will like his namesake get better and not prove the Hammers opinion of him correct.

In general, agree. I feel Nani messed up on Friday. However, it's too early to pass judgement on him, as it is on the new regime in general. I have never felt comfortable with Nani or Duxberry, but they must be given a chance PARTICULARLY as, without them, none of the changes would have taken place, and Basinni would still be here.

Potentially, yes, what a squad. The Udinese second eleven. Potentially wonderful, but let's see (most) of them play first before waxing lyrical. Like all signings, a proportion will not work out, but in the vast squad we now have, there MUST be a wonderful team. It's down to Zola, now, to find it.

One of the reasons these players aren't fit is that Serie A kicks off 2 weeks after our season starts, so their effectively 2 weeks behind, meaning they should all be fit for Wanderer's my 1st game of the year, only 300 mile round trip but better then the 750 to Vic and back!!! Be positive, come on there' s a good chance in the next 2 years we'll be a Premiership club

There was a young chap called Zola,
Who was Italian and never wore a bowler,
He came up against little Cloughy,
Who proved he was a bigger toughie,
And then he brought back Al Bangora.

The Pozzo’s arrived one day,
Extoling the virtues of attacking play,
The Watford players forgot,
How to shoot from near the spot,
And then Zola’s hair did turn grey.

I thank you

Oh dear.....
Be carfeful what you have wished for fellas...
1. I believe the fans are voting with their feet and have never seen such low support for an away game that is reasonable to get to at the beginning of September. That back on the worst gates at the beginning of the season for many years at the Vic.
2. I have never seen Watford fans leaving 10 minutes into the 2nd half or shaking their fists at the end of the first half no matter what the score.
3. Nani really pulled one on Zola selling Taylor. The best CH in the Championship and the outstanding performer this season.
4. Nani - I wonder if he is getting some money out of the incoming loan deals?
5. Zola is a tinkerer with the team. From a back 4 to a back 3 and a back 2 all in a week. After 25 seconds I knew we would get a pasting with the way he set up the team. Poor Lloyd didn't know if he should tuck round or run forward. And what was Hogg doing marking the big fella in our 6 yard box?
6. The slick passing is all in our own half and nothing forward. It took 41 minutes for us to get a shot on goal and that was off target.
7. Cassetti the so called International got easily nudged off the ball for the 5th goal.
8. The wall for the direct free kick which I was right in line with left most of the goal wide open.
9. The team was all over the place and it seemed to me the players had no idea and were not organised.
10. Couldn't work out why the players came back for the 2nd half early. After the shambles in the first half he should have used every minute he could to reorganise the team. How can you leave defenders in a 2v2 situation with 2 centre forwards. Suicide
11. I am worried for our club. 45 professionals. Well they will be in different changing rooms at UCL (they all can't get into one dressing room) and I wonder if already there are fractions between the nationalities?
12. The teams you have picked previously in your responses include players you have not yet seen? Dangerous if my intuition about Nani is right.

We are losing the soul of our club, or even it maybe too late, and it has completely gone. Do you think the FA will not plug that loophole for loan signings? Nani and the Pozzos have totally abused it. So then what do we do when we have lost our own jewels?

Well it's simple really you either support what Zola is trying to achieve or you don't, and it's clear you don't. The man has been in situ for what two months? Changing a style of play, overseeing an influx of talent and waiting for their fitness levels to come right.
The club has been saved, what's not to like about that?
So if your not anti Zola, or indeed anti Watford ( for whether you like it or not, it's Pozzos Watford now) perhaps you'd like to post something positive about the regime rather than the snipes to date?

I had a dream, the administrator had been called in, we were minus 10 points, we were bottom of championship, thevAdministrator had sold Eustace to Leeds for £100k, Murray to Fulham for £500k, Nosworthy to Peterborough for £200k, Hogg and Taylor had gone to Cardiff for £500k, Doyley to Crawley £50k, Hodson to Crystal Palace £150k, and the previous owner had left the club in millions of debt, whilst owning a pub, a bentley and a safe with a few million in it. We had been twinned with Pompey, immediately pulled out of Harefield Academy and released all the academy players. We then turned up at Crystal Palace and lost 0-4, the starting team was :
Bond, Thompson, Bennett, Hoban, Dickinson, Jenkins, Mingoia, Buaben, Forsyth, Garner and Iwelumo. The FA placed a transfer embargo so no new signings for the season. In fact it was a nightmare, but luckily I woke up, owner gone, debts underwritten, 16 new players, world class manager, twinned with two other premier league teams, no points deduction, 6 points on the board, commitment to do the ground up once the team gets top six, THANK FCUK

There is a lot of unwarrented negativity on this site, together with some over-the-top optimism. Yes, without a doubt, with Bassini still around, we would have faced administration. Please remember that when objecting to the Pozzo's. Yes, I regret the days when the club was owned by local football fans, E.J. Etc. Those days have long gone for any team outside the Blue Square. sad but true. The Pozzo's, at least, have a solid record of running clubs---they don't come in, splash money, then dissappear.
However, we all have a right to doubt personnel and their abilities. I am uneasy with Nani and Duxbury, but am happy to give them time. I would not have chosen Zola as manager---but again, he must have time. (The expression used in one post on here describing Zola as a 'World class manager' is perhaps a little overenthusiastic). I am optimistic for the future of the club. As long as the Pozzo's don't lose patience if the attendances stay low or Zola fails.

Zola was close to getting Chelsea job, if RDM hadn't won the CL he was favourite.

Everyone who has spent anytime in his company since he became our manager (I am fortunate that I have) all says the same positive things.

Yes jury may be out on Duxbury and Nani, as it would be any senior management new to the role, however if we'd signed no one and kept the same team I sense the negativity wouldbe been ten fold, damned if you do, damned if you don't.

I said to Scott (1to1) that if in 3 years I am staring at a new main stand, we gave no debt and the team are a secure top 10 championship team I for one would be very happy. He replied that all the above except that Premiership football within 3 years is their remit, or the Pozzo's would out them and bring in a new management team.

My view is Zola has been given too many players with a view to picking out the best, like an all you can eat Chinese Buffett, try a bit of everything, but only choose your favourites when going up for seconds !!

If we get thumped at Bolton the end of the world will be upon us, if we narrowly lose the negative nellies will be remain pessimistic, if we draw then no doubt the jury will still be out, if we WIN it will be World Domination LOL

I for one will reflect on Xmas Day, no judgement until then

Hollys team does look great, but it needs a leader, and I don't see one--Eustace, maybe? Perhaps that was part of the problem on saturday. Perhaps we need a multi-lingual Captain---how many languages would he need?

out of my squad yes a leader needs to come forward. I'm also hearing Eustace back injury is quite bad, won't see him for a while

It takes time to Gel a new squad, some of the players only arrived in UK yesterday, they hardly gonna be all best mates yet !

The dressing room under GT was not always a happy place, footballers aren't happy if not playing, dropped, feel threatened etc, it's the entertainment business and they get well paid.

For once our team doesn't pick itself

My main worry at the moment is not Zola, Nani or Duxbury for they can be replaced by The Pozzo's if they see fit. No, my main concern right now is the apathy shown by so many Watford fans in simply not showing up to home games. I am hoping that it is, as previously said, just a combination of August holidays/bank holidays.Olympics etc etc but if we don't start seeing 13,000 - 15,000 in the ground pretty soon, our owners might start to wonder what it is they have invested in.

Putting Watford to one side, it's non league day Saturday and 1st round FA Cup qualifying, Wealdstone v Biggleswade, £5 to Watford Fans Adults, £1 U16, it's a good laugh, a crowd of us Horns will be there, it's only 5 miles from Watford, they are expecting circa 700+, so shopping with the wife, DIY or FA Cup at grassroots level. These guys are postmen, tree surgeons, work all week, train 3 times a week and play often for peanuts travelling all round country. Great Bar open at Wealdstone, so need a fix, come watch Stones. We should get Pozzo's to buy them for our youth squad to play competitive football. www.wealdstonefc.com

Spot on. Three years down the line, if attendances don't pick up to the level of the Nani/Duxbury plan (I assume they must have given a figure to the Pozzo's) they will make a business decision. Dependant upon where the team are, of course. Premiership money will carry us through, but if still in the Championship----.So we must all say a little prayer that Zola succeeds.
Mind you, we all have, anyway.

Ode to PozzoVille

They came from the Italian town of Bolognaise,
Where they roamed in fields of gold and grapes,
They one day found Watford,
Which wasn’t near Rome nor Oxford,
They then nuked Luton, did The Italian Krays.

They went into Boots to try an after-shave tester,
Behind the counter they found Iniesta,
‘I want to be a hornet’ he said,
‘I want to fill the Premiership with dread’,
Then off he went to play for the City of Manchester

Anyone for any more?

As for Zola, I doubt he is an unwealthy man & if he was'nt happy then surely he would just walk away!
Ummmm we didn't play like that at Palace or against Brum. If he is building a system it is his choice but changing the back 4 in 3 games in a week to play different systems is suicide with or without Taylor. He may have plans in his head about what he wants and fair enough, but don't put players in situations they cannot handle or are not good enough for. Settle the team down into a structure and continually work to improve within that structure, especially when you are integrating new players. You cannot set the team up as he did on Saturday and if he doesn't learn very fast he won't be in a job. And by the way these are not ramlings there fact. And senior people at Derby were asking 'what the hell was he doing'.

And as for your comment on 25 seconds, you don't have a clue. It can take much longer to understand and see how the system has been set up. 25 seconds is VERY VERY quick. Don't be disrespectful to the players when it wasn't their fault. They looked like lost souls and am sure they had no clue what they were doing. Dicko is a good honest lad if not a bit limited we all know that. But he is not and has not played CH. To expect him to play that without full backs is incredible. He gave everything but got caught because he didn't know where to be. lloyd didn't know whether to run out drop in run forward or back. Keep it simple for the level of players we have and get them working as a team. And I will only say the players they have bought in are better than ours when I see it. Abdi and Vydra definately enhance our team but that's why they have been picked for every game. The Championship is tough and lets be realistic here. We won at Palace in the last minute fortuitously. Against Brum they didn't want to know or work hard when we had the ball until near the end. And if they had scored one they would have got another. How many times have we seen that?. The other league games we have been presssed against Ipswich and Derby and we have not got out of our own half. You cannot play in the Championship wiothout a back 4 you will get murdered down the outside of the CH's, you will get absolutely murdered. If Derby hadn't taken there foot of the pedal they would have got 8. It is a must that you are organised at set pieces. Even he admitted that he (Zola) hadn't done enough in that area. I cannot believe that someone of his knowledge can commit such a crime. I hope his ego doesn't take over or we will be in League 1 not the Premiership and from what I have seen they have a huge task on their hands.

That's odd - with your trendy lefty views on Deeney's rehabilitation I had you down as a certain Guardian reading, sandal wearing, yoghurt knitter
Lol, couldn't be further from the truth!
And as for Deeney, I mainly object to the self satisfied comments of the usually liberal campaigning to crucify Deeney while we're likely to have campaigned to keep Al Bangura in the country because he played for us.
It may be argued Bangura never kicked anyones head in, but I would argue that his 'asylum' status was spurious to say the least.
Anyway I think Deeney has been done to death Alex.

Surely it's in the clubs interest where it's possible to have a system where a season ticket holder can bring along a non regular who can pay at the gate. The ticket number would be linked to the season ticket holder so that would stop a QPR scenario happening again. The more times the holder uses this system then the club would then offer more incentives via the st holder to the prospective regular. We all know there's plenty of space at the Vic these days so there must be enough room where they can have a sit anywhere policy for the st and soon to be long suffering fan!
Just a thought!

Zola was the captain of a galleon,
He is Italian but not a stallion,
Then one day he went,
And signed Darren Bent,
And Cadbury gave him a chocolate medallion.

Lloyd Doyley Lloyd Doyley,
He hasn’t got a dog,
Lloyd Doyley, Lloyd Doyley,
He hasn’t got a frog.
It’s full of sugary goodness,
Good enough to eat,
A finger of fudge is just enough,
To give your budgie a treat.

Cornetto, dear friend, please come to the forum with your odes
Can one be on Chris the Vic please! Such good rhyming potential there.
Im deeply touched by such works of art, and if I can find some LSD I'm sure the words will become clear!

Surely the forum is a perfect occasion for a public reading of selected works of Cornet. Yes, the usually quiet fans will be raucously ecstatic. Others will simply shake their heads in disbelief and mutter things like "not since John Barnes made his debut have I witnessed such genius at Vicarage Rd...that Cornet...he's profoundly mind-blowing." others will break out in chants of: Bring on the Cornet. It'll be an unforgettable occasion.

I can't wait.

I'm bringing a cadburys flake to crown the Cornet King poet laureate with!
Edward Lear himself would be nonplussed at work that surpasses even the jabberwocky ( hold up perhaps Lear was writing about Bas there?)
King Cornet the hornet with a flake please. ( he's definetly flakey)

I think you've been too dismissive of Franco's offering. He captures the mood of the forum quite well. I would suggest to franco, though, that 'lumped' neatly sums up some of last years football and rhymes with dumped and pumped and hump

Cornet I think your ability to make tender and poignant verse from such trials is your great strength. And let's face it, we've all been there with the scooter and the satnav that doesn't work in Watford. I think that's why the takeover took so long. The Pozzos were all going round Watford for days, lost on their Vespas

I bought it from Croxley, my lovely Lambretta,
I drove it to Garston whilst reading La Gazetta,
It’s used by The Pozzo’s is my VW Jetta,
My name is Gianfranco, I’ve got a Red Setter.

I tried to get of Deeney, I don’t want to harm him,
I then drove to Carpender’s, oh no said my Garmin,
I got stuck in Bushey on my bright blue Scooter,
Next to me was Gonzo, the muppet with the hooter.

I like my chocolate, it’s full of cocoa,
Zola’s so small he wears a babygrow,
My factory has a coreolis & it measures the flow,
In Dubai it might never snow.

Yours poetically

Utterly brilliant, I'm overcome with confusion. I wish I was bright enough to decipher your coded brilliant.
Benjtamin? Roll over for Cornet. A true 99 resplendent with choc flake.
I wish you had noted the baby grow was Armarni. Somehow it's important to me.

Sorry Ross an obvious mistake on my part. Nani does say good morning to Zola. I was just puzzled as to why Zola had Taylor pencilled in to lead the team out and then he was sold seemingly leaving Zola with a problem.

Chris what part of clause in Taylor's contract do you not understand? He was allowed to leave as was his wish because he was offered a better and longer contract. this is not Nani pulling the rug, this is someone exercising his contractual rights,
Let's stop demonising some and canonising others, neither party are guilty of anything and like most players the shirt and badge is a loan.

I agree with LD. Taylor wanted to go. End of.

Now on to important matters. The Cornet's new poem has brightened my otherwise weary day. Read it out loud to Mrs. It's not until you hear it and vocalise it that you truly appreciate how remarkable it is. In this sense it reminds me of Larkin

I visited Watford to find a true Hornet,
all i found was a rambling Cornet,

His dog was not on a lead but i think he should be, lyrics are not what they used to be.

The Harlequin was shut but the Cornet was open, sometimes I wish he'll take a plan to Copen.

Like the great dictator
That once ruled Spain
Francowatford is a right royal pain
His rants are short
But never sweet
And he seems to appear when
We wallow in defeat
He try's to emulate cornets great verse
But if possible its far far worse
So dear Franco you've tried your best
But please please please, give it a rest
