Hornets in dispute over control of Watford Former Players' Association

Former Hornets Neil Price, Derek Payne, Ian Bolton and Nigel Callaghan with the Watford Observer clock in the Yellow and Red Lion pub. Former Hornets Neil Price, Derek Payne, Ian Bolton and Nigel Callaghan with the Watford Observer clock in the Yellow and Red Lion pub.

The founder of Watford’s Former Players’ Association and the club are at loggerheads over who controls the organisation.

Ex-Watford defender Neil Price, who was part of the side that reached the FA Cup final in 1984, created the FPA with Hornets legend Graham Taylor in early 2009.

Price ran the organisation unpaid for the initial few months, although Taylor and the previous regime of Julian Winter and the Russo brothers did provide the FPA with help in terms of office administration and work space.

A sales position then opened up and Price was offered the job, which resulted in him incorporating the two roles.

Price said the Former Players Association went on to help the club’s sales team raise a considerable amount of money in the last three years, assisting not only the newly-created Legends Lounge and annual dinners but also other functions, such as season ticket renewal schemes.

When he created the FPA, Price stated he wanted to help the fans feel part of the club again and events such as the legends’ cricket and football matches, and the ex-players’ work in the community, was warmly received by the majority.

It was well supported by the club’s old players and Price stated there are now around 250 former Hornets involved.

But last week Price joined the likes of former commercial director Raj Athwal and head of marketing Leigh Brooks in being made redundant by new chief executive Scott Duxbury.

Price claims he requested three meetings with Duxbury during July and August to discuss the FPA and the work it does following the takeover but said the new chief executive did not respond. Price also said that after he was made redundant, he asked whether the club wanted to work with the organisation on a consultancy basis, but claims he has yet to receive a reply.

Price said: “The Former Players Association was set up so that we could not only bring the old players and club together, but also to build a fund to help those former players who are less well off or struggling.

But despite the FPA becoming hugely successful and raising a lot of money for the club, that hasn’t happened.

"Before the takeover I was in three board meetings where we talked about setting up a separate account for the FPA and it seemed as though we were making progress.

"But following the takeover, it seemed the club wanted to head in a new direction and this seems to back that view up.

"I am of course hugely disappointed to leave the club where I have worked for the last three-and-a-half years and been associated with since I was 13.

"I wish all my friends the best and also the club every success. It is up to the new regime which path they want to take, even though I may not agree with it.

"A lot of people loved associating with their heroes and it is a decision I do not understand considering how much money it raised for the club."

However, Watford believe they control the FPA and when asked why the Hornets had ended their affiliation with the organisation, head of communications Richard Walker replied: "It hasn’t. In fact, the situation is quite the opposite. The club is making a commitment to continue to strengthen its links with all former players and is in discussions with a number of high-profile former players about expanding the reach of its Association."

On Price's claims that he requested several meetings with Duxbury in recent months and that the chief executive did not respond, Walker added: "Neil’s redundancy was directly connected to the sales part of his role.

"The club is currently formulating the Association’s plans for the future, and discussions have been opened by the club with Neil Price as well as a number of other former players as to how this may look. The club is unaware of any request for a meeting with its CEO or any senior members of staff made by Neil Price."

Watford have a sold-out '30 Years Ago' Reunion dinner on Friday, October 27, where guests have paid £50 plus VAT to spend time with the successful 1982/3 squad, many of who played with Price and have been active members of the FPA.

When asked if the event will go ahead, Walker replied: "Yes – and a number of ex-players who committed to attend originally have recently expressed how much they’re looking forward to it."

Price claimed 95 per cent of the former players who returned to Vicarage Road in a working capacity were not paid for their time or given expenses.

On whether players will be paid in the future, Walker said: "The club will keep its options open in this regard. It might well take the view that payment is appropriate where the context of the work and the profile of the ex-player concerned merits such a decision."

Price's brother Josh recently agreed a 25-year lease for the Yellow and Red Lion on Vicarage Road, alongside builder Dave Hashani, and the former Watford defender hopes to continue the association's work from the renovated pub.

Price said: "Hopefully the FPA can find a new home at the Yellow and Red Lion, continue the good work we have been doing and finally set up a fund to help the old players."

Hornets legends Luther Blissett, Ian Bolton and Les Taylor will be in the Yellow and Red Lion pub from 12.30pm on Saturday and will be hosting a question-and-answer session with supporters. It is hoped the trio will return to the pub after the Middlesbrough match also.

Watford owned the pub opposite Vicarage Road Stadium for several years but agreed to give the business, and the land, to former owner Laurence Bassini as part of the Pozzos’ takeover in the summer.

However, Josh Price and Hashani came to an "agreement" with Bassini over a new 25-year lease, with the option to purchase the freehold in a year’s time.

Hashani helped renovate the building and Josh Price was the pub manager when the club ran the business. When he spoke to the Watford Observer a couple of weeks ago, Hashani did not want to discuss specific details about the deal with Bassini but he did confirm that he and Price finalised the paperwork for a 25-year lease and that there is an option to buy the freehold in a year.

Josh Price, who spent time at Watford as a youngster, also stated Bassini is "out of the picture" and wants to "return the pub back to Watford supporters".

However, it is unclear whether all of the paperwork regarding the transfer of the freehold from Watford FC to Bassini has been processed, even though the 25-year lease has been agreed.

Watford refused to comment on whether the freehold had been transferred to Bassini or comment on the club's current situation relating to the pub.

I know who I would buy a used car from out of these two and it would not be devious Duxbury. I think it was a bad day for the club when he became involved. Yes I know he put the package together with the family but from his previous history and now with the club I believe his only focus is for the betterment of Duxbury. He has shown his colours with the sacking of people who have been good for the club and his treatment of the people employed in their catering department.

There are a LOT of positives which will result in the takeover by the Pozzos. However , Duxbury is not one of them . I am sure he has one aim..to make as much money for Duxbury as possible. ..and sod the consequences for Watford FC and the good people that have worked hard in making the club what it is over the last few years. The sooner he's gone the better. !

These are former Watford players not former Neil Price players and Neil has to understand that he has no divine right to use the club in association with them.
Duxbury's brief is to turn a loss making club into a profitable one so he is right to put a stop to the back scratching and explore all other options so what Neil needs to do is demonstrate a workable business plan going forward and not just rely on the status quo. He is not part of the club but if he were he would be obliged to work in the clubs interest on their agenda and not his own.

How can you criticise Duxbury for restructuring the club and removing the deadwood (remember Happy Eggs). £5m for the Catering has to be good for the club. I hear Price was a Bassini man and had to go. Nani, Zola and Duxbury have been fantastic for this club. Can we stop being negative and just enjoy it for once!

Take time to read the link above and that may clear up whats happening here. I remembered reading it and thinking there must be a divide in the offices. There is no way we can know if Duxbury is a good egg, happy egg or anything else just yet BUT it appears clear that there was a small clique in the club operating for Bassini and his side kick Barrea (and still ate re: the Red Lion) so IF Duxbury is cutting out the cancer then he should be applauded

Such firm views based on guesswork and idiocy.

Based on past performance it appears the Pozzos have been good for two other clubs and hopefully they will be for us.

happy Eggs...still sponsor the club and are a sound firm unlike other shirt sponsors in the past who went bust or did not pay us. We might not want their logo on the shirt but they stood aside for the benefit of the club.

As for duxbury he seems to be making sensible decisions and until that is proved differently he should be backed with caution.

Nani signs players who are often unfit and in some cases old and gets rid of the best of our old team. He needs to be treated with a high level of caution.

As for Zola, he seems a good honest bloke and appears to be achieving quite a lot.

The level of criticism by some and the adulation of others does appear to be OTT.

Price had three and a half years employment and if the legends idea really was his then I still don't really have much sympathy.
Many of us will have come up with ideas for our employers and left them behind when we moved on, that's the way it works.
To be honest he used to irritate me so much when he used to help with the radio commentary I would never have employed him in the first place.

There is absolutely no possible way players have been signed by this club without the express approval of GFZ.
With regard to signing old players , I presume you mean Cassetti, he played for Roma and was only signed by Udinese to help Watford with paying his contract.
GFZ must of known this player and ALL the others , he is Italian after all and was working in Italy after he left West Ham.
Cassetti is the one player Zola must of wanted himself , otherwise why go to the trouble of signing him to the parent club?
As for signing unfit players , that doesn't seem like an issue now, as they are slowly getting fit and ready for action ( due to their lack of playing regulary) ,and are of a quality much higher than we could previously of dreamed of .
We now have a large and very balanced squad of players with cover for ALL positions.
Is this down to Nani or Zola, ?
In my opinion they are doing a fine job.

You lot come on here and go on about something none of you know about. Lets get some facts straight here.

It was Neil Price who suggested the idea to GT. GT backed it and went to the Board for approval and funds so that it could be run professionally. The Lounge has steadily grown over the last few years and Neil Price as an individual drove that through. The people that attend the Lounge absolutely loved it and it was making a very healthy profit in supporting the club.

I think you lot would sell your souls to win a football match, well good luck to you all and the little Udinese that is now Watford. But just like Petchey before, Nani and Duxbury will gradually reveal what they are. You lot won't agree but we are losing our soul and our club. I feel they are stealing our football club away from the people of Watford. Well great for you all and enjoy your so called success but I won't be joining in any more. You lot chase your dream and sell all the jewellery that goes with it.

Martin Samuel was spot on. The FA WILL close that loophole around foreign loanees, and what they are doing is fundamentally wrong. I like to think I have better morals, but hey enjoy your ride, I just hope there is something left for your children after they get bored or are seeking fame and fortune for lots of money elsewhere.

It has now become a very sad time in the History of Watford FC.

Bye Bye then you wont be missed one tiny bit. So far this season we have had 2 games in which U16's have got in for £1.00 and there is another one in 2 weeks. So before christmas the young kids of Watford and surrounding areas have shelled out less than a fiver to watch some young, hungry, talented, attacking, flair and passionate players, who have givin their all and not stopped trying.

Their is an open training session during half term that is free to get into and allows U16's to take part in a section of the training session with the first team squad and Gianfranco and his staff.

These activities are letting the kids get closer to the club more than any other team in the country. Surley by these activities these young kids are going into school and saying im a watford man rather than a Tottenham or Spurs man which could and has happened.

We have never done so much to encourage the kids to the Vic and its actually the opposite happening regarding your comments.

The club is also looking at a pre pay card allowing people to pay on the day and un reserved seating to get the crowds and atmosphere back!

The club has not been taken away, its never been more accesible!

It makes such a change to be owned by such forward thinking and active owners.

1 - Why are the majority of posts always so contradicting.

2 - The following players have left our club either on loan or permanant..

Taylor - Bottle went and didnt wanna fight for his place - asked to leave.

Mariappa - Was asked to stay but wanted to go.

Loach - Enough Said.

Massey - Enough Said

Whitchelow, Bennett, Thompson, Mingoia, Assombalonga, Jenkins.

Are all out on loan... Whch of these are our better players from last year????????????????

The club in the 3 or 4 months they have been owned has never done so much to make the club an players more accessible. Cheap tickets for kids. Pay on the day tickets. Free training session in which you can take part with the 1st team sqaud. Players in the club shop signing autographs on a match day. Even Bond and Murray where in the Harlequin today signing autographes.

We have gained some excellent players, playing an attacking, attractive brand of football that we have not seen for years!!!

Some of the comments on the WO recently have seem rather well written and well informed making me wonder if someone at the club is posting in the guise of a fan. Don't blame them, though it is a pity they would feel the need to explain themselves in such a way. I have some sympathy with Goldenboy1960. I don't want to end up supporting the Udinese Reserves and those fans that say 'it happens' or 'go support somebody else' are being rather dissmissive of the concerns of people who love this club. I worked in the Wimbledon area when the club got hijacked and it was very sad to see it happen. It was a hard decision for those fans to change their allegiance. I don't want Watford just to be a brand that you have to take or leave, but something that people from Watford feel some attachment to. There is more to a football club than success on the field as we all know only too well as the two occasions we got into the Premiership were both closely followed by near bankruptcy. I'm glad the Pozzo's have bailed the club out, better an overseas owner than no club at all, but the number of loan signings and news stories like this make me feel very uneasy. Perhaps many others think the same which is why the gates are quite low at the moment. Rather than people childishly saying 'go and support somebody else we won't miss you', why not say any radical change of direction is likely to have good and bad points so let's keep a close eye on the new owners to make sure the thing we love stays in spirit something we want to keep loving.

Any credit you deserve has been undone by your Petchy analogy. The Pozzo's are sole owners of the club, Duxbury and Nani are in place to make it tick. If you really believe we would still be solvent and better run with Bassini at the helm then say so otherwise your opinion isn't worth considering.
Regardless of how popular or successful you may consider the scheme has been, Duxbury or even the Pozzo's themselves have obviously found it wanting and undoubtedly have other ideas.
Why mention sad times for WFC when actually you mean sad times for the WFC hangers on.

Here is my take :

Neil did a great job starting the FPA and Legends Lounge, came up with good idea's, also made a great start at the pub (before Baz stopped paying the bills and let him down). After 3 years doing the Lounge Neil (as most people) probably needs a fresh challenge, a more senior role, with the change in Leadership that role doesn't exist, I believe he did try and have meetings with Duxbury, but I guess Duxbury wants his own people on board, so unfortuneatly ignored his requests, and was made redundant, BUT Neil has a great basis to channel his energy and ideas into the pub, I hope it's successful (regardless if the club still have freehold or Baz as there now appears grey area as to whether the paperwork went through to transfer ownership from club to Baz), either way I wish Neil, Josh and Dave every success.

What Neil must recognise that the FPA isn't "owned" by any individual, the FPA is for the fans, so respect to Neil for setting up, but there is room for events at the pub, shop, club, lounges etc, so I hope that Neil, Richard, Duxbury are all grown up about this, and share the love ..... The fans don't want divisions.

As for comments above, anyone at Charlton could see we have an identity, in fact it felt as much like the good ol days as ever, the players are settling and are together, Zola will be a great manager, there are things that need to be improved, medical dept being one, but everything can't be fixed overnight.

Lets hope Duxbury quickly finishes his branch and root analysis of who he wants in the staff and let's those who he doesn't part on good terms, then I hope he doesn't shy away (we are not West Ham and won't lynch him), we aswell as the Wobby would like to hear his views, Baz his away or then spouted crap, Duxbury has the opportunity to win us over.

No club is run perfect, no business is run perfect, Kellogs get judged on how many boxes of cornflakes they sell, Watford get judged on results on pitch, what happens in the manufacturing and tasting room doesn't matter in the grand scheme of things ...

I look forward to the fresh approach in the Lounge, I look forward to the fresh approach in the pub, I welcome the good ideas like the open training session, and a chance for kids to join in, I love this forum as long as its objective and not too negative or aggressive, I think we should be proud of the Wobby (part of our heritage), and I'm bloody excited about watching our old and new players gel and watch the purist football for years at Watford, the train has left the station, enjoy the ride !!!!!

You really are short sighted and arrogant about saying bye bye. Well witnh that response you are no better than them so welcome to a marraige made in heaven and good luck.

By the way Tottenham and Spurs are the same club...
Meant Arsenal my mistake. Not arrogant at all, although i must admit im very good lookin and successfull in what i do. And not short sighted as everything i have stated is 100% fact.

Seriously, what more can they do to make all you negatives happy?

What would you do???”
No mate your not arrogant, and after watching the last three games with you can confirm as as passionate and knowledgeable fan as any.
In fact the same goes for Buckler, Hemel Loyal who I had the pleasure of attending CHarlton with. That along with D.Unstable and Jason who I've known for a bit!
This project as given us all a spring in our steps!

You can't compare us to Wimbledon as the people that took them over had no expierience of running a football club. The Pozzo's have over a quater of a centry running a small town football club and more importantly a small football club run extremly well and always within there means.

I like to to think that your refering to some of my long, well informed rambles as a secret club member posting. Unfortunatly its a dream job but not mine as im a used car salesman. My posts are well informed and fact because i take the time to read through posts and do my research so i have an understanding of the way the Pozzo's work.

Regarding the club having an attachment to the local area, read my previous post. The new owners have givin us 3 games before christmas where U16's can get in for just a £1.00. More than any previous regieme. They have set up an open and free day at the Vic to watch the 1st team train and for U16's to take part in. No other club in the contry is doing that.

The club have 2 1st team players in the shop on matchday to sign autographs, and just today Bond and Murray were walking around the town and in the Harlequin signing autographs.

Now you tell me how the club is not attched to the town?? At 27 iv not seen as many owners as some of you, however know one has ever given us this level of access to the playing squad and the behind the scenes.

The pure and simple facts that only really mater are the following:

Financial Stability

Improve the squad with players of higher ability levels

To have a side that play attractive football

Redevelope the old stand

Gain promotion to the Premier League

With the Pozo's the first three of these main objectives are already being met!
Regards the stand - the Pozzos are the only owners we could of wished for that could give us this!
Regards promotion - again the Pozzos are the only new owners that we could of wished for that could of ever come close to giving us this opportunity!

GFZ has known this takeover was happening long before he did and would of already been selecting players that he could have loaned to him!

This is the best thing to happen to WFC since the original Elton take over and look what happened there!

BTW Martin Samuel has never been "spot on" in his whole writing career, why should he start now? The figures he embellishes for those West Ham signings were a little more than average for mediocre players but West Hams pecarious position hardly made them an attractive club to join, any savings would've been made on salary/contract. All clubs regularly make duff signings but that tack doesn't suit Samuels article and neither does to mention the owners financial ruin caused by Landbanski's collapse.
If the FA tighten up on the loan system then good for them, I'm sure it won't trouble the Pozzo's or their morals, they will always abide by the regulations.

All the Pozzo's have to do is put all the shares of Udinese, Granada and Watford into 1 company eg. Pozzo Limited. If they do that then there is no transfer of player registration, meaning they do not need to be re-registered, meaning there has been no transfer or loan, meaning there is nothing the FA can do.

The players just move around in house.

If you worked for Tesco Watford and they moved you to Tesco Reading, They just move you in house, you dont need to re sign.

I still can't believe that a few people moan about the loan signings as if they are stripping this club of its identity!
Absolute rubbish that! Over the last 5/6 years some of our best players have been loaned: Cleverley, Lansbury, Helguson, Adam Johnson, Ben Foster, Jordan Mutch, Andrew Taylor, Kusack etc etc! a player is a player that's all! It's irrelevant what country they originate from as the club are not braking any rules!
And for those WFC fans who think we are flaunting rules... What about the clubs that are allowed to operate with hundreds of millions of debt? What about the clubs that splash 30 million on a player that's not worth 15 million just because there rich owner can afford to out bid you!... What about the clubs that operate outside there financial capabilities by offering average players 30k a week just so they don't sign for you?
All of these things are un-fair on clubs like ours and need addressing more then our loan players that don't get much game time at there parent club!
Martin Samuel is so so wrong about our position and is diluded with big spending championship/premier clubs!!

FORZA WATFORD
Great post Holly, reflects just how I feel. I also agree those last two away games was a throw back to the unbridled passion I used to feel.
People going mad when we scored, chanting all through the game, strangers not feeling too self conscious to sing. And, that support continued when we conceded a goal or more importantly when the boys had their backs to the wall.
Watford support with an edge, a club with an edge and a future where we're no ones whipping boys, on or off the field. OTT positive? Maybe so but then why not. The futures bright for Watfudinese (lol)
Spot on LD, it's exactly how I feel, there's an excitement , an electricity that is building , gaining momentum ,there is hope and optimism for the first time in years you could cut it with a knife at the Valley.
I saw faces that I haven't seen for 20 years there , who feel the same.
The club is discovering its soul again, after losing it to bland ambitiousless people , who thought they had a cosy job for life.
Now we need that at home games

Unreserved seating will help
Well I'm going to motion it at fans forum, all support on the night welcome!
