Gianfranco Zola wants Watford to replicate away form at Vicarage Road starting with Middlesbrough

Gianfranco Zola admits his players have "a long way to go" but is hoping Watford can take their renewed confidence into Saturday's game and repeat their away form at Vicarage Road.

After losing four games on the bounce, the Hornets are now three games unbeaten including impressive away victories at Huddersfield Town and most recently, against Charlton Athletic.

The Hornets coach is certainly keeping his feet firmly on the ground and while he hopes his players will have drawn confidence from recent success, he recognises there is a long way to go.

He said: "It is good news, very good news, but we need to keep going because it is a tough league.

"The victory we had the other day at Charlton is a massive confidence boost for everyone, it is huge, but that is only one part – we need to make sure we maintain the confidence and that we are focused on a tough game on Saturday.

"It is getting better but we can’t say everything is perfect. The situation is better because we were playing good football and we were not getting the results but now we’ve found a bit more solidity at the back and the results have come.

"It’s very, very early, we just want to improve, we have made a good step forward but there’s a lot of things we need to do, a lot of things we need to work on, so it’s getting better but there is still a long way to go."

Watford are now 12th in the Championship and just six points off league leaders Cardiff City, but Zola insists he is not interested in league positions just yet.

He said: "We have so much to work on and we need to improve on many things. We didn’t look at the table before these two games and we won’t start watching it now."

One table Zola has been keeping an eye on though, is the away league which shows Watford sitting joint top.

The Hornets have been impressive on their travels but their form at Vicarage Road has been stuttering and that is something Zola wants to improve, starting against Middlesbrough tomrrow (Saturday).

"I noticed before that in the tables of away games we are top of the league but in the home games we are third or fourth off the bottom so we need to make sure we improve our home performances a little bit,"

I think the Middlesboro game is a better indicator of where are squad stands currently than the previous two games.

Dont get me wrong they were great results, especially the Charlton game with ten men.

But they were both newly promoted teams, not Championship hardened consistently strong teams like Boro.

Interesting match me thinks....

Agreed Jules. The 'boro will give us a bigger test than Charlton and Huddersfield. They have a solid squad and could be there or thereabouts for promotion at the end of the season.

I'll be interested to see if we go with 3-5-2 on Saturday. I'm sure we will given GFZ's comments on the Beeb earlier today about our attacking 'DNA'.

On an utterly selfish note I hope the away form continues as I live in Leeds and will only get to attend games in the North this season!

Let's beat the smoggies shall we?

COYH!

Loving the irony of the Official WFC site asking us to 'SLIP into the Hornets Shop to meet Fernando'!!!!

Nice to see that the PR bods have a sense of humour, but hope it wont be considered an inappropriate jibe.

Funny!

Lol - it's hilarious that Addicks fans seem to blame their loss on us having only 10 men for the majority of the game ... when really they should be grateful that Mike Dean's rash misjudgment only stopped them getting a walloping.
Almost everyone (including Charlton fans) that actually had a good view agree that Foriestieri did slip and he certainly wasn't appealing for a penalty.
And on other forums I notice some Huddersfield fans have jumped on the bandwagon even though they've already been proved wrong.... never mind, they won't be the last.

Its just shows how sad some Charlton and Huddersfield fans are for them to come onto this site to moan about one of our players when the real fact of there results against us was the simple fact that on the day/night they wernt good enough!
Considering they will both be at the foot of the table this season they will be spending a lot of time on other clubs sites bemoaning there fortunes!

Hopefully the next time we meet these two sides will will have the likes of Geijo, Fanchone, Vydra and co involved from the beginning and end up giving them a right pasting!
