Matej Vydra controversially sent off as Watford beaten by Middlesbrough at Vicarage Road

Ten-man Hornets suffer Boro defeat Ten-man Hornets suffer Boro defeat

Watford have justified cause to feel hard done by after being controversially reduced to ten men for more than 45 minutes for the second match running and losing 2-1 to Middlesbrough at Vicarage Road.

The match could not have got off to a better start for the Hornets, who took the lead after just 28 seconds when Troy Deeney confidently found the unguarded net after Jason Steele had denied Matej Vydra following a terrible back pass from Andre Bikey.

The hosts were in almost complete control for the next 25 minutes, only to be pegged back against the run of play when Marvin Emnes hooked in the equaliser following a corner.

Having been pegged back, Watford suffered another setback minutes before the break when to the bewilderment of most inside the Vicarage Road, including the players, Vydra was sent off to leave his side going into a second half of a game with ten men for the second consecutive match.

Almen Abdi forced a good save out of Steele from a free-kick early in the second half but after being denied once by Manuel Almunia, Scott McDonald fired the visitors in front with 13 minutes remaining.

However, but for a superb reaction save from Steele when three Hornets were queuing up to convert a rebound from a Mark Yeates free-kick, the hosts would have got the point their performance merited.

Following back-to-back away wins, Ginfranco Zola made just the one enforced change, with Vydra promoted from the substitutes to return to the starting XI after a two-game absence in place of the suspended Fernando Forestieri.

There were two adjustments on the bench, one of which was particularly significant as Alex Geijo was involved in a match-day squad for the first time this season. Connor Smith was also back among the replacements, with Chris Iwelumo the player to miss out from the squad that overcame Charlton Athletic on Tuesday night.

Bikey was one of four changes to the Boro line-up but he made a nightmare start, selling Steele hopelessly short with a back pass which Vydra was on to in a flash. The keeper was quickly out to smother his effort but the ball broke for Deeney, who confidently dispatched it into the net from the edge of the area to give the Hornets the lead after just 28 seconds.

Vydra had another shot charged down after a positive run at the heart of the visiting defence soon after and then Jonathan Hogg swept a pass out to Daniel Pudil on the left. The Czech international delivered a dangerous cross which Abdi almost got a decent touch on at the back post.

The Hornets continued to ask questions and in the tenth minute Nathaniel Chalobah again found Pudil, who cut inside before hitting a low shot which Steele smothered. Deeney and Abdi also saw efforts blocked as the hosts continued to dominate the early exchanges.

Chalobah was again the supplier in the `12th minute with a lovely 40-yard ball over the top to release Vydra. The angle looked to be against the Hornets’ top scorer but he unleashed a ferocious angled right-footed strike that clipped the top of the bar as it went over.

The visitors finally mustered their first attempt in the 19th minute when Nicky Bailey drifted in a cross from the left and an under-pressure Lukas Jutkiewicz headed wide of Almunia’s left-hand post.

Boro then started to enjoy some periods of possession but they didn’t create anything until the 29th minute when George Friend worked a give-and-go with Emnes, continued his surging run forward from left-back and got away from Marco Cassetti before forcing Almunia to concede a corner at his near post.

From that set-piece – and out of keeping with the majority of what had gone before – Boro levelled as the corner was headed down by Stephen McManus and Emnes hooked the ball over his shoulder and into the net from close range to make it 1-1.

Buoyed by the equaliser, Josh McEachran chanced his arm with a good 25-yard shot, which Almunia had to push behind for another corner, and then Bikey saw another effort blocked as their opponents were guilty of becoming a bit sloppy.

However, the hosts were soon back on the front foot, with Chalobah again the instigator, releasing Cassetti on the right and his pacey low cross was inches away from being converted by the sliding Hogg.

Boro were forced into a change six minutes before the break when the injured Justin Hoyte was replaced by McDonald. But three minutes before the break, Watford found themselves numerically up against it for a second match running..

The incident occurred when Bailey slide in for a challenge and referee Steve Rushton, judging by his body language, seemed to intimate that Vydra had stamped on the player, who had moved to left-back following Hoyte’s substitution. However, not one Boro player appealed for a foul, let alone anything more serious, while the majority inside Vicarage Road reacted with bewilderment as the extremely unlucky Hornets striker trudged to the dressing room. It was a baffling decision.

Not surprisingly though, Boro sought to capitalise on their numerical advantage and McDonald wasn’t too far away with a glancing header from a Friend cross before the half came to a close with a cascade of boos directed at the official.

The visitors started the second half on the front foot, forcing two corners in the opening stages, but it was the hosts who had the first meaningful attempt when they were awarded a free-kick in a central position 25 yards out and Abdi’s right-footed effort was destined for the bottom corner until Steele got across well to push it behind.

Deeney then headed a cross from the right over before Faris Haroun was found in a good position on the right side of the area but he screwed his shot wide of the near post.

Zola made his first change in the 57th minute when Geijo became Watford’s latest debutant in place of Deeney but it took an excellent save to prevent the visitors from taking the lead soon after when Almunia denied McDonald from close range after Boro had attacked down the left.

Emmanuel Ledesma came on for Haroun after 65 minutes and then Abdi made way for Yeates before Leadbitter forced Almunia into a save with a strike from distance.

McEachran became the first Boro player to be booked following a foul on Geijo and then Tony Mowbray played his final card, replacing Jutkiewicz with Luke Williams. Within a minute, the visitors were in front.

McDonald received the ball in the area and did well to open up a shooting chance before hitting a low strike back across himself and past Almunia in off the far post.

Sean Murray was sent on for Neuton immediately after the goal but it was only thanks to the brilliance of Steele that the Hornets didn’t equalise with seven minutes remaining.

The keeper made life hard for himself by spilling a Yeates free-kick from 25 yards but as Geijo, Cassetti and Tommie Hoban closed rapidly in and one of them looked set to convert the rebound, the keeper stuck out an instinctive leg to divert the ball over the bar.

Almunia saved from Emnes when Watford were opened up on the counter moments later, while Murray had a shot blocked at the other end.

Four minutes of additional time gave the Hornets grounds for further encouragement but they were unable to test Steele again.

Watford: Almunia; Hoban, Hall, Neuton (Murray 77); Cassetti, Abdi, Chalobah, Hogg, Pudil; Deeney (Geijo 57), Vydra. Not used: Yeates, Doyley, Smith, Bond and Ekstrand.

I know how they pair ref's to games, Watford , alphabetically is near the bottom, a straight line is drawn across to the referee's form league, thereby we always seem to draw the c**p, if this ref is anything to indicate the standard, the game is dead, I just can't understand how we get so many dire refs at Vicarage road.

We all reacted with bewilderment when the free kick was given to Boro and then with total horror when he produced the red card - the Boro players to their credit looked as bewildered about the decision as the rest of us.

The ref totally ruined what was turning into a very entertaining match with neither side seemingly doing anything to stop the other from attacking, the game in the second half had a very odd atmosphere as a result as Boro used the extra man and Zola seemed impotent to change anything to support the forward.

Personally I was disappointed that after the first 15/20 minutes we were unable to press Boro collectively and let them ease their way back into the game, of course had the early chances been converted this might not have been so annoying but even so, before the sending off Zola had lose the initiative and the central midfield 3 had started to look very ragged.

Nueton continues to frustrate, his poor defending is now coupled with cocking up encouraging looking counterattacks.

Deeney being replaced seemed to baffle everyone near me as he has the strength, ability to hold the ball, win set pieces and score goals but having waited to so long to see Geijo I was hopeful but (and it is unfair to judge on one 45 minute performance playing upfront on his own) he seemed far less well equipped to play this role in the particular game than the player he replaced.

Geijo showed some nice touches, some extremely large shorts(!!!?!) but his movement and determination to get into the box seemed poor but this will improve will improve with fitness, time on the pitch, a strike partner and better fitting shorts (at least I hope it will).

Not the best from the yellows and Zola needs to make better in-game decisions but the man in black ruined the game and I do hope the football league show will show what a prat he was! The decision to show Boro a yellow card for a knee high challenge in the 2nd half really capped a thoroughly incompetent display!

Let's face it the referee was determined to send a Watford player off at any excuse and I wouldn't be at all surprised if he'd told his mates that in the pub beforehand or had a bet. That or the FA are directing refs to hammer us again as I'm sure was the case when we were in the PL under Boothroyd.... Don't for one minute think it beyond that particular gentleman's club, it isn't.

I paid good money for three tickets today. It was our first match this season and we had seats just in front of this incident which all three of us thought was innocuous. Unfortunately, the referee spoilt our enjoyment of this game.

Referees should be taken to task over incidents like this. They should only be able to issue a red card if there is no doubt that they observed dangerous play. If there is the slightest doubt then the card should be yellow at most.

Perhaps the FA shold refund us the cost of our tickets if the evidence shows that there was no observable dangerous play.

Don't worry, I have 3 season tickets... The referees this season have been laughable... There has to be an appeal over Vydra's dismissal.... Even Neuton had a good game... And went on a very promising surging run...

Well said that man...referees SURELY have a duty of care to the paying public to keep it at 11 v 11 unless there is a "beyond all reasonable doubt" situation that means he HAS to issue a red. I couldn't really see much from the Rookery but all reports suggest the official got this horribly wrong. Yes it did spoil the game, yes it probably cost us at least a point and no there will not be any action against yet another incompetent official.

IMHO the football league (or FA or whoever is responsible) have to realise this sort of standard of officiating will drive people from what is becoming and increasingly expensive afternoon out! People will decide it's not worth the money if this sort of thing keeps happening!

End of rant time to drown the sorrows!

Totally despondent, we should have capitalised on our dominance on the opening twenty five minutes.
The reffing decision I think makes us wonder if what Bringe sys is true. Nigh as bad as Attwells phoney goal.
To the idiots slating Geijo after ten minutes, and Zolas subbing if Deeney. Geijo could not of one into a worse situation. Four months out and asked to lead the line against a good side. Deeney has run his heart out since his return and you can understand Zolas thinking. The boy must be knackered.

Had a great view of the "incident" from front and centre of Lower Rous. There was no stamp, no dangerous play, nothing whatsoever. Although the red card will be rescinded, I'm sure, the fact that the decision changed the game, the problem of dismal performances by referees and the suspicion that Watford somehow are on the receiving end of more than our fair share of this kind of bad decision-making just won't go away.

On another note - I haven't been the greatest fan of T. Deeney but today saw another side of him. In the warm up shooting practice a stray shot from TD hit a youngster in the front row of the Rookery ( and I think the kid was wearing specs ) The poor kid was a bur shocked .... but Troy came over to make sure the kid was okay and spent sometime talking to him. He then said he'd be back with a Watford shirt which he did at the end of the warm up. Well done Troy Deeney - looking at you again in a different light. And great goal.

I wish to complain about a referee by the name of Steve Rushton who was in charge of the Watford v Middlesboro game today, his inept laughable decision to send off the Watford player Vydra, not only cost Watford valuable points, but also ruined the game as a spectacle.

I have not seen one referee so far this season in charge of the Watford home games who could bring any confidence to a fan or even encourage anyone to become a qualified referee, these people are ruining the game.

I trust Watford will appeal the decision, however what are the chances of a team having a player sent off at almost identical times in the first half of consecutive matches! Bet there would be great odds of that happening?

You can't appeal against two yellows, and the vydra sending off was just a few hours back.

Game RUINED by the Referee. He has given 9, yes 9 red cards in only 12 matches this season, he needs to take a good hard look at himself.

We started like a house on fire, watched by Grandpa and Gino Pozzo, plus all the Udinese Directors for the first time this season, early goal, we could of had three or for, Boro couldn't get a touch. However we then sat back and in a role reversal Boro started to dominate then equalised. I still then fancied us to get back on top, it was entertaining as both teams were playing football.

Then the game got RUINED, only one person in whole ground thought it was not only a foul but a red card, it made me feel sick to the stomach. Yes we can appeal but can't change the outcome of today.

I couldn't see us holding out for second time in a week with 10 men, and so it proved. There was a bad challenge on Geijo, then after that he pulled out of challenges nervously. I think GFZ should've kept Deeney on for at least another 15 minutes, it was hard for Geijo given the circumstances.

This could and should of been the pasting we are due to give someone, feel gutted, but 6 points out of 9 in a week is a good return, bigger picture .... Roll on Peterborough !

Lots of positives, we look like scoring more than we did a few weeks back but still lots to do, the midfield went off badly but that could of been tiredness from Tuesday's efforts maybe.

From the upper Rous I had a good view of the incident and I couldn't see that Vydra did anything wrong, in fact a yellow card would have seemed harsh.
Obviously the game was being recorded so for the sake of a few minutes wouldn't it be sensible for the fourth official to watch a play back before the referee makes such an important game ruining decision.
He has to make the decision in a fraction of a second and this should not be allowed to ruin a game that costs a recession hit public a great deal of money.
This sort of technology works perfectly well in other sports and speaking for myself I have no problem spending an extra 5 or 10 minutes at a game if it means preventing stupid penalties and sending offs.
I think generally Zola is doing pretty well but I do have to say that in a ten man situation the last man I would bring on is the non tackling Yeates and probably the last person I would take off is Abdi.

When you're down to 10 men & need the ball to stick up top he is not the type of player to do it. The team will click I'm sure of it, they are still getting to know each other & are already playing some good stuff. I am massively impressed by

I think with the benefit of hindsight, maybe Deeney could have stayed on another ten minutes, and no way Yeates for Abdi who is our best dead baller bumpy a country mile, Murray if it had to be anybody.
But before we all lay into Geijo, lets remember he's been injured four months asked to come on as a lone striker, a big task when match ready of which he's clearly not.
We've got to maintain the tempo of the first twenty, rather than allowing teams back in, and we will.
I think when we're all firing we will Be hard to live with.

Sat watching Prize Fighter is probably not the best way to calm down but seeing the 2 good looking girls kissing in the Chineese has helped some what. Anyway back on track!

The 1st 25 minutes was the best i have seen us play for ages. 2 Men on everyball, always an option, different attacking options etc etc! I thought it was one of the best football matches i have ever seen with both teams getting the ball down and playing!

The ref unfortunatly ruined a very promising game for us and i have no doubt that had he stayed on we would of gone on to win. Too often we seem to get landed with a pillock who is either being payed off or reads the papers and forms an opinion before the match. The Forestieri sending off was to much of a coicidence!

Im not sure how the FA and Football League can expect the Respect campaign to work because you have to earn respect and they are nowhere near achieving that! He is not even good enough to ref sunday league and was inconsistant all over the pitch!

I also noticed the Middlebrough player who took a dive and not even a free kick was awarded so do we assume the refs are racist or is that to taboo...

However credit has to go to Nicky Baily and Tony Mowbuery for comeing out and declaring how shocked they were. This will help with the appeal that has now been launched! Credit also has to go to the middlesbrough player who skinned Cassetti and was then tripped in the box, but who stayed on his feet.

I think there was enough on show for us to see that when we have Vydra, Forestieri, Deeney/Geijo and Battocchio as the forward attacking players we will be capable of scoring 2 or 3 a match! On the subject of Geijo, he has not played since May, he has had no pre season and he was thrust into a situation that was always goin to be difficult!

I think there were lots of posatives and bar for there keeper making a wonder save that i still cant work out how he did it, we would of had a draw with 10 men against one of the better teams in the leagues!

To finish I'd like to bring up a sour point in the fact that myself and LD as well as a few other people we speak to all had to give out bollo***ngs to so called Watford fans for getting on players and Zola's back. Its not called for and not needed and next time it wont be just a bollo**ng you get.

And finally i thought Middlesbrough did well to bring that many with them and to them and all Watford fans i hope everyone got home safe and well.

God Bless.

God Bless.
Chris ask that God pal of yours to sort that useless ref out. Can't remember too much of the bible but I think in the OT he said he was a vengeful God, that's good when it comes to getting revenge on that useless numpty.

Chalobah was outstanding again, can't believe he is not 18 until December, there is an option that he may stay until end of season. He is so calm and comfortable on the ball and breezes past people, best player of that age I have seen in a long time.

Almunia was very good today, he is so very vocal, interesting that Loach made a clanger today #kissthebadge

Mingoia scored for Accrington, Garner scored for Carlisle (pigs do fly), Bennett & Jenkins didn't get a game, Wichelow got 15 minutes as sub, Thompson is back at Watford. Dickinson and Hodson looked pretty down today whilst touring the lounges, can't see them getting near the team at the moment.

Sooner unreserved seating comes in the better to create atmosphere in the Rookery

Wonder what the Pozzo's made of it all ? Maybe the Wobby can find out ...

On the train to and from the game i had the pleasure of spending over an hour with some die hard Chelsea fans.

They were intriguid as to how Chalobah was getting on and were even more excited when i told them the way he looks and moves about the pitch is reminisant of Patrick Viera.

The were pleased to learn that he is been played in the midfield role as is is where they see him playing. They were glad to know that the fans have already taken to him and glad to hear he he has started 4 games on the bounce!

I told them he is always avaliable for a pass. Does the simple things well. Passes the ball well. Gets stuck in and tackles full bloodied.

However we all agreed that the best thing for him come January is to extend his loan by another 6 months so he continues his development.

They were also glad Zola was back in football and with a more stable bored who share his ambition and style.

They finished by wishing us all the best and hope we are challenging for hounours come May.

I thought i'd pass this on as its always nice to hear thoughts from other clubs!

As an aside from all the unbelievable decisions an inept ref gave today, our legends players led by Neil Price were only given 1 ticket as a complimentary for today's game. Why, you may ask when we have a few attending? It seems our new Chairman does not support our history in fact Mr Duxbury is doing his up most to totally destroy all the history and what went before. Now, before the silly posts on here comment negatively and support what they dont know, just take a look at his egotistical destruction of our club so far. Downgrading of academy, his unapproachable, new over priced catering and.... failure to recognise our history! Now, Bas may have taken us to bankruptcy but it could of happened even before he arrived on the scene, remember!!
The heart and soul of our club is being destroyed by someone who should of never been allowed to be given control.
The future is not bright for WFC with this man at the helm!

Not posted anything due to the fact it's taken me this long to get over the fact that Vydra got sent off for nothing!
Still compleately shocked with one of the worst decisions ever to be seen at the Vic! Only the ghost goal that Reading were given can top it!
The only plus points are that we actually played well and that the league should be able to over turn this decision so Vydra can play in the next game!
Gutted is an understatement but I still believe we can have our best season since 2006!

All you negative numties are gettin right on my tits and rather boring. Im sure a lot of you clowns only come on here to rile most of us up. You cannot live in the past. No business lives in the past and football is a business otherwise you end up like luton. Yes its sad that some of the older players didnt get in for free, but if they love the club surly they can stretch to £25 to help their beloved club.

Out of interest, which bit of the clubs history is being destoryed???

If over priced food is the biggest drama we have to face under the new owners im opening my arms wider to accept them.

What went before was a lot of dodgy owners who were out for them selves. Players been sold on the cheap. Rubbish football. Mid table if we were lucky but more likely a relegation battle. And all that if we didnt go bust. Now if the new owners and Duxebury wanna get rid of that image, my arms are gettin wider and wider in welcoming them!

The acadamy is the most pointless subject in the world. Murray and Hoban are the only 1st teamers from the acaday with Bond and Smith featuring on the bench.

The acadamy to be a grade 1 status costs £2.3 million. You have to offer a minimum of 20 contracts per year to acadamy graduates. we havent offered that many since its opened! Then you have the weekly cost of those contracts. You have to have coaches for every 8 players not the 12 it is now so again more moeny on wages. You also have to have an indoor all weather pitch which we dont have so would have to build.

Take all that into account and you at 5 or 6 million pound extra a year. Now where do you surpose we get that money from because the acadamy is not producing the players to re coup that...

If you dont like the fact that the club has stable owners who know how to run a club, who have a legend in charge playing a passing attacking game. Giving us the chance to watch some of the best players we will see at the Vic, then there are 91 other clubs for you to go and watch!!!!!!!!!

The new owners and bored have given us 3 matches before christmas where kids get in for the price of a mars bar and an open training session in which kids can take part with the 1st team!! Players are also in the shop and in the town signing autographs! What more can they do to make this club more accessible to the local kids and the local area??

How would you do it differentlly????

10 red cards out of 12 for this jerk, that can't be right, can it?
There is nothing that I can say about the Ref that has not already been said on this thread. It will not change the result,it will not turn back time, the game will not be replayed so what can we do but appeal the red card. The only thing that will happen is the Ref will be demoted to Div 1 or Div 2 football for a few games. So in Hindsight there is feck all we can do but cry and moan about it,which will make No difference at all!!!

There are several rumours flying around at the moment, I guess the Fans Forum or if the Wobby can get an interview with Duxbury can clear them up.

I am sitting on fence as far as Duxbury goes at the moment as always two sides to every story ....

Rumours so far :

40% increase in season tickets next year (inc Corporate areas)

Richard Line (Liason officer) is Duxbury brother in law

The Catering was outsourced to Lindley without a competitive tender process

Our Coach company has been switched to a company that Duxbury wife involved in

The are more rumours, but to be fair to Scott there may be no truth in any of them, in order for the rumours to stop and before they gain momentum hopefully he will respond to the Wobby or at the forum.

1. We are improving.
2. Zola needs to make better in game decisions than he has
3. Neuton is really really really poor, what is he doing here? Send him back ASAP. He will halt our improvement.
4. Deeney substitution? Maybe knackered but I still felt it was too early.
5. Geijo looks a hundred miles of the pace

and by the way our crowds are very poor! Only 12000 there again today.

A 24 carat plonker! Its fans like you that do not see the mist in the early morning.
I have quoted fact and what have you come up with, blinkered, emotional and nonsensical red top sensationalism.
Your totalitarian outlook is wonderful but reality and what is happening now does not tell the true story of our club so far.
No real direction, no heart, no identity and lets be honest a team of players that did not cut the grade at our feeder club!
You remind me of everything that is wrong with our club and football in general.
Politicians can fool those that do not know politics but football fans are not fools.
If im a 24 carrot plonker then that makes you a 42 carrot plonker! You have not qouted any facts. You have whined on about how we are not stuck in the past.

You have not answered my question in what you would do different.

You have not answered my question in terms of which bits of our history is been destroyed. So answer these with some facts please.

I see the mist in the early morning as i go for a jog at 5 am before boxing traing.

You remind me of what is wrong with our club in the fact you would rather watch crap football, been played by average joes resulting in a struggle for places in the league while we worry about our bank balance and have our best players pinched for peanuts. How can any real fan want this for thier club??!! Answer that one while your at it!

You have qouted no facts as the facts you claim you have qouted, you have not clarifyed or answered my response.

The direction which you claim does not exist, does. It is that we are owned by football people who are intrested in getting us good young players in who help the club be competative and eventually challenge for promotion.

And no heart???? That really does prove that you either do not go or you go with your eyes shut? Did you got to Palace? Did you go to Hudderfield? Did you go to Charlton? I did. And what i saw was a group of players with absolute heart and passion that did not ever give up and challenged for every single thing resulting in great performances and points.

By saying you qoute facts yet you have qouted none and you have not answered my questions and by saying the club has no heart, you have proved you are nothing. Not worth my time or anyone elses.

Your not woth me getting worked up over as i have met your sort before and quite frankly i dont rate it.

We are going through change which I am all for, it's all about balancing old and new
I do not see any truth in the roumer abot a 40% season ticket increase as no club is that stupid or naive to think fans will A - accept it and B - pay it.

Regards giving bussiness to his mrs and mates, that is no different to what i or anyone else would do in that position.
I can't see 40% increase either (unless we get in Prem) for Championship football, 15% is most people would wear. However those at the club past and present are saying that decision already been made and I've heard same from multiple people ....

I said I'll reserve judgement until I see in writing ... Ideas are ideas, not set in stone !

As for employing family/friends, all fine as long as they right people for job

Agree 100% Chris, I admire your calmness in responding to such a yawn post, either get on the bus or jog on sculls. Any so called fan who is referring to us as a feeder club are either on a wind up or just not worth conversing with.

Shame on the BBC. Just watched the FL show and they didn't even bother to comment on the worst ref decision of the season at Watford. But they took us back to the Leeds game (Leeds are more important) to talk about a disputable penalty. Rubbish bias everywhere.

Yesterday was ruined as a spectacle by a poor referee with a poor record, we never got to see Geijo introduced in ideal situation alongside a fellow striker, that I suspect would have been Vydra as poor Deeney was out after his epic reintroduction.
But it's good to see the serial whiners creep out every time we lose, yes you Scotty Dog Scully. You and your ilk are an embarrassment to this club, and are what kills the atmosphere at the Vic.
Yes Geijo is off the boil,4 months off, pretty normal wouldn't you agree, but he can score from anywhere, and he will. Yet some of the comments aimed at him after ten minutes were blood boiling for real fans.

Dear Sir or Madam,

I wish to complain about a referee by the name of Steve Rushton who was in charge of the Watford v Middlesboro game today, his inept laughable decision to send off the Watford player Vydra, not only cost Watford valuable points, but also ruined the game as a spectacle.

Having seen the incident again on television this evening has only confirmed my initial reaction at the time and clearly shows that Mr Rushton made an inexcusable mistake.

I have not seen one referee so far this season in charge of the Watford home games who could bring any confidence to a fan or even encourage anyone to become a qualified referee, these people are ruining the game.

I do hope that you take this compliant seriously and do not simply ignore the fact that Mr Rushton should be penalised for ruining what was shaping up to be a very exciting game. I do hope that the potential points lost at this game does not have a detrimental effect on Watford’s season.

I look forward to receiving confirmation of the action that you have taken in relation to this matter.

I have just watched the sending off incident a number of times. Yes Mr Rushton got this 100% wrong. A appeal will certainly get this over turned.
Not just My Rushton but any ref who makes such a critical mistake should simply issue a one line appology. This would give all refs much more crediility in the future as even he worlds best refs will make some mistakes in most games

lutondown and Chris B - love the fact that you support the club with a passion that you do but could you please quit with the lectures to other people who's views may not mirror your own completely and suggestions that people are cowards if they don't want to back up their opinions with their fists. There are many balanced views put on here which balance positive and negative comments and this is the way supporters articulate on the terraces or in the stands.

For my part I love the football that Zola wants to play and the style of football we play when in possession, but yesterday In the first half we failed to press the ball (ie the opposition player with the ball) either individually or collectively well enough and this allowed Boro to come back into the game.

Zola's in game decisions in terms of formation and moving Chalobah into a back 3 against Bristol City were (in my opinion) poor and resulted in a less effective performance.

I have sympathy for Geijo and and the supporter who said he would rather see Iwelumo. When selecting the who sits on the bench a manager typically thinks through each member of the starting eleven, the potential scenarios that might occur and select accordingly to give himself the best options of changing the game in whichever tactical direction that he needs to.

In Geijo's case Zola will have seen what type of player he was on videos of Granada and his (admittedly limited) performances in training. what became quickly apparent was that in his current condition Geijo can not lead the line either physically or tactically (ie with clever movement - his movement was very linear) and he seemed rather one paced. Iwelumo for all his faults holds the ball and allows the midfield to join in the attack, something which we didn't do very well yesterday and were unable to do in the second half because the ball was unable to be retained long enough and the ref had reduced us to the 10 men. Personally I was surprised Iwelumo was not on the bench during the warm up simply because Geijo could not replace Deeney like for like.

In some ways it was a shame that Boro didn't Go ahead earlier and give Zola more time to change the hold and contain mentality of the game in the second half. I felt that we could still pull a result out of the game and it was only Steeles boot that stopped us getting what would have been a fabulous point.

The players that we now have in the squad have both better technique and more importantly better decision making than we have seen previously (Chalobah especially) and it is a joy to watch especially compared to the style of football that Dyche was playing at this stage of last season but I feel the team will (hopefully) improve in terms of when we don't have the ball and that Zola's "in game" decisions improve. when they do we will really have a side on our hands.

Finally the loanees are working for cause as much as any or many of the journeymen English/British players that we have watched in the last two decades and whilst they do that they will have my support and appreciation.

This sums up the incident for me from the local paper in Middlesborough

And the game swung the visitors way on 42 minutes as Watford's Vydra was shown a controversial red card after trampling on Bailey after the Boro man put in a challenge. The Czech looked to be trying to leap over Bailey after stumbling after the tackle but caught him on landing and everyone in the ground seemed surprised as the ref mimed a stamping action and pointed him to the tunnel.

I don't give lectures im not paid enough! On any of my posts i qoute facts that i can back up and and prove!

I am open minded to different peoples opinions as that is what makes our game great!

I think with Geijo he didnt take into account that if someone got sent off it would affect him. I think the plan would of been to take Deeney off after 60 mins and play Geijo and Vydra. Geijo showed some nice touches and had Vydra been there a few more of them could of come off..

I think a better option would of been Beleck rather than Iwelumu. Beleck is off similar build to Deeney but alot more mobile than Big Chris.

My argument with Scully which i presume is the 'lecture' i gave, He claimed he was qoutin facts which he didnt make one and i cannot abide someone making ludicrous claims about the new owners and then insulting me. Like i say i love people having different opinions to me and will debate them peacefully as i have just done regarding Beleck and Big Chris.

However i cannot abide people insulting me from behind a computer. Im easy to find and use my real name on here as i do on Twitter so theres no excuse for it.

Regarding Chalobah i think he is imense! I told LD yesterday at the game that he reminds me of Patrick Viera in his stature and movement! He is light years ahead of anyone else his age in this country and i would rate him better than Lansbury when he was here! As i said in my earlier post i spent a lot of time traveling to and from the game with some Chelsea fans who were excited to hear my opinion of him!

You know that lad Lutondown, he may be a Maggie muncher but he's right. Zola should be applauded for what he's achieved so soon into the season. He's done a great job introducing new players alongside existing regulars, as well as promoting homegrown prospects. Amidst all the change he's galvanised team spirit such as was seen most evidently on Tues. He's an inspiration to the players in training. They love working for him and improving under him.

People who moan are not simply blind dinosaurs but horrible, zenophobic fools. You have already decided that reading the Mail and aligning yourself with bitter sanctimony in the form of Satan's minion Samuels is more important to your ego than getting behind the Golden boys.

I know we need more people at the Vic, but if all you're gonna do is whine impatiently and berate people for being foreign, then just go, you knee-jerk hoofball-loving bankers

What I referred to was your statement that you and LD spent most of the game dishing out b0//0c£1n95 to people who moaned at the players.

Agreed Chalobah is the best all round player to don the yellow shirt since Cleverley - another loan.

Not convinced on Beleck yet personally - was he on the bench? I agree that Zola didn't think about being down to ten men but you have to. I worked at a non league club who won an fa trophy game and afterwards the coach was carpeted by the chairman for failing to include a sub keeper on the bench because he (the manager) was there to cover such possibilities as the keeper being sent off. the keeper was sent off, we won 4-1 but from then on that eventuality was planned for, the same thing should have planned for (in my opinion).

As for Geijo - Spanish strikers, similar to Italian strikers tend to rely on good sharp movement and quick changes of pace so we should hope that Geijo sharpens up and then we can judge him. la liga b tends to be far weaker than the championship but even so his return for granadas season is encouraging.

Finally and tactically I think yesterday after the first 15/20 minutes that Cassetti and Pudil played to deep and we were closer to a 5-3-2 than a 3-5-2 and therefore surrendered the midfield superiority in the first half allowing Boro back into the game. This would have been something that had we had 11 man on the field at half time that Zola would/should have corrected at halftime but with the sending off being so close to half time meant it was very hard to organise for.

I think Zola would have been better served bringing on Murray rather than Yeates, and maybe leaving Troy on or another ten. But this is all hindsight stuff and for the fans who called him a useless Italian **** are deluded ( and cowards, as not willing to back up there insults) they were not saying this after our last two inspirational wins. Probably not there for two of them eh?
I look forward to the forum and hope that the Club gets to see the majority are supportive of what the new board and management, and some of the best football most of us have had the honour to have witnessed.

lutondown and Chris B - love the fact that you support the club with a passion that you do but could you please quit with the lectures to other people who's views may not mirror your own completely and suggestions that people are cowards if they don't want to back up their opinions with their fists.

Regarding the Loanees. I agree fully on what you say and i have said it from day dot. They work harder and show more passion than many of the layers i have seen!

COYH
To be fair on LD it want him giving out the bollo***ngs it was myself and if it wasnt for him i would probably lost it compleatly!

Its probably not right in what i did but i have a short fuse and passion and mixed together = carnage!

But having spend over £200 in the last week going to Huddersfield and yesterday, i feel im justfied in standing up for the club and the players!

None of the people i gave a talking to had been to Huddersfield or Charlton yet felt they were justified in calling Zola a little c..t and been xenephobic against Pudil and Geijo.

I would defy my namesake, St. Christopher to have the patience to sit there and take what these people were saying.

Now who is lecturing ?
We have all been guilty (not myself of course) of demanding "when is Geijo gonna play?" " where is Geijo ?" " he must be fit by now !". Well obviously he is not quite ready, but come Peterborough he should be nearly there and we can begin to push onwards and upwards again.
Hoping these refereeing decisions are not something more sinister in retaliation to our network of talent.

This **** yesterday is trying to earn a reputation as a tough guy so he can get on the premiership rota. Well I think he should be relegated to under 11 football and left to rot there for life

Peter i was sat in Row W seat 82 and Luton Down was seat 83 in the Rookery. We heard coment calling Zola a little Italian c*nt. We heard Geijo been told to go back to Spain and Italy. We heard Pudil been baracked for not tracking back after being fouled by their box and having nothing given. We heard idiots sayin Geijo wasnt upto it after 5 minutes. We heard people bemoaning a lack of passion and team play. I even heard one bloke say 'play it long'.

This is why i lost my temper and started to challenge them of which none would back their mouths up!

To be slightly more serious, after ten games I think it's reasonable to start making a few tentative assessments. Forestieri is clearly very gifted, Vydra seems honest and decent, while Chalobah looks to me like potentially the best player we've had at the club for some years - certainly the most impressive young loanee since Cleverley. The jury's out on most of the others although to me Cassetti both looks and sounds like a pudding past its sell-by date, while Neuton could charitably be described as accident-prone. The quality of the opening 20 minutes yesterday was outstanding but Boro were already right back in the game before the ludicrous red card. Early days but 13 from 10 indicates another mid-table season which, if it continues along these lines, will once again end around the 60-point mark.

I never went to the match yesterday as i was working, but from what i have heard on the radio ( Talksport and Radio 5) they all say the same thing about the ref.
Why have we had so many disappointing decisions go against us this season? We may as well just have Roger Millford and Uriah Ereny referee the match every other week. Both disliked Watford due to the direct style of football Watford use to play under most of our previous managers.

Now that we are trying to play from the back and keeping possesion combined with attractive football its as though we are being punished for our own success. Like you i am going to the complain to the football league about the inept and incompatence of referees and decisions they cause to ruin games.

All of the signings will come good. Especially, Amunia, Fitz Hall, Neuton, Pudil, Abdi, Battocchio, Chalobah, Forestieri, Mujangi Bia, Vydra and Geijo.

There is obviously something in Cassetti for Zola to a - sign him and B - play him!

Alot of people seem to dislike Neuton as he has replaced Martin Taylor. Now this aint goin to be popular but its true. Martin Taylor asked to leave with 2 hours to go because he bottled it. He didnt have the balls to fight for his position so took the easy way out and jacked and he went down to nothin in my opinion for that.

Neuton is a left back. When he played Arsenal in a Champions League qualifier he was man of the match. He is been forced to play center back as we are short of cover. He is doing his best so all you prats that knock him after 5 games back off or back up what you say.

10 games is not near enough time to start makin assumptions as the whole club and ethos has changed and will take atleast until Christmas for everyone to be fully fit and be used to playing with eachother!!!

Dont forget, because of Bas's making stupid statements and holding up the takeover, the squad missed most of pre season and alot of the players were late in arriving which is why it is taking time!

How the hell can anyone be knocking Giejo on what he had to come into yesterday? Goalkeepers aside and despite what Chris tells us, Zola cannot fill the bench for every scenario and Zola certainly couldn't forecast the imbecilic decision to send off Vydra and the extra load it would place on Troy causing him to tire. Or rather Zola could envisage that but just as one of many other possibilities - he is not God or at least not yet!
It wasn't an injury where you can simply go like for like with other players rehearsed in the role, Giejo won't have been expected to play in a one man attack and anyway he was very unfortunate not to score as Steele made an impossible save with his legs.

He can smash the goals in with both feet, has a strong header and plays players in!! Yesterday was unfortunate that he had to lead the line by himself, with 11 on the pitchwe are going to be awesome. I was sceptical about the foreign players but the way they are adapeting to the spirit of the championship and the dissapointment you can see on their faces when we loose shows we have players that are here to prove a point. They should be suspended like the players and fined.

As for Zola if Fernando slipped why didn't we appeal and if Vydra did not stamp we must appeal.
You can't appeal yellow cards, only red ones.

Agree with most of this. The sending off was one of those bizarre decisions. Changed the game. Ruined the game. But surely we can appeal?
We can on Vydra, and it should get overturned. But you cannot appeal a double yellow like our much loved Argies!
What the appeal can't do is get us points back.
I feel completely cheated
Agreed. I thought that as I typed. It's 3 points down the drain whatever. Still, with any luck, the appeal will work and Forestieri is back next week anyway.

God Bless.
Chris ask that God pal of yours to sort that useless ref out. Can't remember too much of the bible but I think in the OT he said he was a vengeful God, that's good when it comes to getting revenge on that useless numpty.
LD Chapter 1 verse 1:2 Thy hand will strike down the servant of the the devil and he will come dressed in black, bald as Buck and as pompous as Gary Barlow, as incompetent as Bas and as arrogant as Alan Sugar.
Need a poem from Cornet to lighten the mood!
Thanks for the laugh LD.

Writing to the FA about a ref? Has to be done but we all know they do appear in denial and fight tooth and nail to defend keeping the status quo - still if I have it right Attwell & Bannister his lino were kept away from Vic Rd.

They will reward the Red card totting ref with an FA Cup Final no doubt like they did with Rob Stiles.

Gutted yesterday with losing, but today reasoned having one man less was too much for a side that ran itself to a standstill a few days before, not just physically , but mentally .
But firsthalf the Horns were majestic for 25 mins but needed a bit more killer instinct. We needed someone to get on the end of Cassetti's many superb crosses, this is what Geijo will give us when fit, he was totally off the pace yesterday and only game time will sharpen him up, we must be patient.
I saw on twitter that Vinnie Jones was at the game to support the 'orns.
He said ' refs are still haunting him and that the sending off was " a million % wrong" .
Also he said its the best Watford team for ten years'

Duffster,Keith Mercer etc etc are mostly in agreement on how we are witnessing fantastic, passing football week in. This has been achieved in what 10 games?
You Horns

Ah, I never saw the show, it's still haunting me and have never felt this cheated after our brilliant start.
I feel we will still impose a serious threat this season.
But folk 6/9 points if can be sustained is promotion stuff. We all know that there is so much more to come.

Frustrating that the football league show analysed the red card of Zigic (which could have gone either way) but didnt even mention the red card at watford. If this had happened to United could you imagine the fuss there would have been, but it ok because any s**t can happen to watford and nobody does anything

No, but if none of us do not get one we should start a nationwide campaign, petition to make referees answerable to their mistakes.
Gross incompetence usually means dismissal in the real world why any different in their closed shop?
They really do act above the pale, arrogant ****'s and major egos.
This one is going to get a bit of getting over

Watford are not worthy according to the TV Footy programmes, they'll rejoice in showing a 5 - 0 stuffing but if we were to win 5 - 0 it would hardly get a mention before they flash back to a 10 times repeated clip of a premiershit team.

Good on you. Did a similar thing myself when I was stood along side fellow Orns booing and deriding Nigel Callaghan. Never forget him looking our direction with a broken look on his face.

You wouldn't (or shouldn't) insult and put down your wife in public; whatever you think through out the week, come the game at least cheer for the team or sit in the away end.

Did anyone else get a responce from the FA? Just received a reply...I suspect it's a standard reply

Thank you for your email, your comments have been noted and forwarded through to the referees department.

We often receive numerous queries and complaints regarding individual referee's decisions and their overall performances. Although we are usually unable to respond on each individual incident, we can advise that the performances of all officials are constantly monitored by way of club and assessor reports, the match video or DVD and, at some grounds, the Prozone statistics. The match is also analysed by the Referees' Manager, a referees' coach and the referee and, despite the perception of some, match officials are most accountable for their performance. Referees will review match decisions with the support of their coaches.

It is worth stating that referees will make errors of judgement in a match in the same way that players do. They make their decision based on years of training and experience and what they see at that moment in time, from a position different from anyone else in the ground - he can only act on what he sees, assisted by the other match officials and not everyone will agree with the decisions he takes.

Contrary to expectations, the Referees' Manager will not attempt to support a referee out of sheer loyalty. It is his responsibility through Professional Game Match Officials to identify training needs of not only individual referees but also of all National Group officials. The Manager also works with his group in a bid to constantly improve standards in a game which has become faster and more frenetic over recent years. Every match is recorded and referees are under closer scrutiny than ever before.

Should any club wish to appeal a decision made to send a player from the field of play they can do so and it would be at The FA's discretion whether to uphold a decision or overturn it.

We trust that some of this reply at least highlights to you the procedures in place designed to improve performances and we thank you for contacting us with your comments.

Regards,

Amanda
