Matej Vydra penalty gives Watford win over Peterborough United

It looked like it was going to be one of those days but a late penalty from Matej Vydra gave Watford a 1-0 win over Peterborough United and three points their second-half display deserved in terms of chances created.

After a relatively dull opening 45 minutes in which Daniel Pudil had clipped the crossbar from an angled free-kick, the Hornets created a host of chances in the second period but were unable to convert one of them until the decisive moment.

Nathaniel Chalobah forced Bobby Olejnick into a fine save, and later hit a post, while Fernando Forestieri had an effort cleared off the line as the Hornets threatened to take charge after the break in front of the biggest crowd so far this season at Vicarage Road for the club's Family Day.

But just when it was looking like the hosts would have to settle for a frustrating point, Pudil was fouled in the area by Kane Ferdinand and substitute Vydra emphatically converted from 12 yards.

Gianfranco Zola made two changes from the side that lost to Middlesbrough last time out, although one was enforced because of Neuton’s foot injury. With Nyron Nosworthy and Joel Ekstrand also sidelined due to muscle and ankle problems respectively, Lloyd Doyley returned in defence. Higher up the pitch, Forestieri was given the nod over Vydra to partner Troy Deeney in attack.

The visitors gained the first corner of the match inside the opening 15 seconds and from George Boyd’s set piece from the right, Tommy Rowe sent a looping header onto the roof of Manuel Almunia’s net.

Posh continued to make most of the early running, with Michael Bostwick seeing a long-range effort blocked, while Almunia had few problems in dealing with a Tyrone Barnett off-target header.

Watford gradually started to get their attacking game going though, and they almost created an opening when a lovely back-heeled flick from Forestieri almost allowed Deeney to break through on goal.

But it took until the 24th minute for the next chance to arrive as Barnett flashed a header wide from a Mark Little cross.

The next incident of note came seven minutes later when Deeney was hustled off the ball by a couple of opponents and made a rash challenge on Boyd. Although referee Geoff Eltringham played the advantage, the Hornets striker could have few complaints about being shown a yellow card after the ball went dead.

Watford finally created their first effort of note three minutes later, although the angle looked to be difficult that it was down to the player’s ability that one was created at all.

The situation arose when the hosts were awarded a free-kick to the right of the penalty area and Pudil whipped it in left-footed and the ball clipped the bar before going over.

As is so often the case when a team has waited a long time for a chance, a second arose soon after when Forestieri’s deep corner from the left was headed down and not too far wide of Bobby Olejnick’s left-hand post by Fitz Hall.

However, it was Posh who created the best chance of the half a minute before the break when Boyd put Emile Sinclair in behind the Hornets defence and he squared for Barnett, who mis-hit his attempted finish.

There was still time for Nathaniel Knight-Percival to even up the booking count when he saw yellow for pulling back Almen Abdi as a largely disappointing half ended goalless.

Darren Ferguson made a change at the start of the second half, bringing on Kgosi Ntlhe for Rowe.

But it was the home side who were quickly out of the blocks, creating three chances within the space of a minute.

The instigator was Forestieri, who attacked down the left and broke into the area before coming inside on his right foot, only to see his on-target effort blocked. However, the ball fell for Nathaniel Chalobah, who struck a fine curling effort that forced Olejnick into an even better save.

From the resulting corner, Tommie Hoban saw a header deflected wide but the Hornets had the bit between their teeth now and more opportunities followed.

First, Deeney rather prodded an attempted right-footed finish at Olejnick but then the striker played in Forestieri, who cut back on his right foot to open up the target, only to curl the ball narrowly wide of the far post.

The next opening for the hosts came just before the hour when Chalobah received the ball in the area and weighed up his options before hitting a right-footed strike that bounced off the near post and back into the grateful arms of Olejnick.

The Peterborough boss chose to make his second change soon after, with Grant McCann coming on for Craig Alcock and then Ntlhe was booked for pulling back Marco Cassetti.

Ferguson played his final card in the 67th minute, bringing on Saido Berahino for Sinclair but before then McCann had struck a rasping drive from 25 yards that wasn’t too far over.

But back came the hosts, with Chalobah curling another effort over before releasing Forestieri, who did almost everything right as he dinked the ball over the keeper but the ball didn’t have enough pace on it as it rolled agonisingly towards the net and Shaun Brisley was able to get back and clear off the line.

Jonathan Hogg had a couple of efforts blocked before Forestieri was played in on the left side of the area but he snatched his shot into the side netting.

Zola boosted his attacking options further with 17 minutes remaining by replacing Abdi with Vydra.

However, the next opening went the visitors’ way, and it was a worrying one defensively for Watford as an unmarked Boyd was picked out by a fine Berahino cross from the right but his header was pretty much straight at Almunia, although he still had to react sharply to push the ball away.

Alex Geijo and Mark Yeates came on for the closing stages in place of Deeney and Forestieri respectively but it looked like it was going to be one of those days until the last minute of normal time when Ferdinand rather needlessly tripped Pudil on the left side of the area as the ball was going out of play and referee Eltringham immediately pointed to the spot.

Vydra took the responsibility and dispatched the penalty emphatically, slamming the ball down the middle of the goal to give the Hornets the goal the number of chances they had created merited.

However, Zola's men still had to see out three minutes of injury time and during it Doyley produced a fine block to repel a shot from Berahino and the visitors also forced three corners.

But Watford did safely negotiate injury time to pick up their second home win of the campaign and also their second clean sheet.

Yay ... but whoever does the stats must have fallen asleep before half time. Both keepers made important saves, we had one cleared off the line and correct me if I'm wrong but I do believe Vydra's penalty wasn't deflected in.

We scraped 3 points but 3 points all the same. I don't really care how we got them. We just about deserved the win but I'd be a bit sick if I was a Posh fan. We had loads more chances and looked strong until the final kick. With this squad, why can't we finish?

At the moment we are slow and predictable. Very few balls that broke down a stubborn 11 man defence. By keep passing round the back always gives opposition defence time to organize. Both keepers made fine saves a crucial times. But 3 points and just about deserved on second half performance. For me no outstanding players but equally no poor ones. a good solid team effort.

A hard fought 3 points that keeps momentum going.
Who is the tool that sits in the lower rous on the half way line that was abusing dan pudil and had a long argument just before half time?! He has been class for us this year and probably wants support notables from his own fans.

How many more games are we going to hit the cross bar and post and not gain the points... .? I was thinking. Whilst watching many leave early... Then it happened! Posh better than bottom....played us off the park for first 15 mins... 2 nd half much much better..
FItz Hall... What a signing! Doyley had a good game, Fernando came into his own after the break...World Class....Hoban..soli

Man of the match.. Harry the Hornet.. He kept the kids interested... He is hilarious at times... I am sure many will return to more matches.. Great to see so many seats full...Well done WFC all round.

Shame some drunken Posh fans caused trouble outside before the game, Tony Currie nearly got hit by a bottle I hear.
3 hard fought points in the bag eventually, Vydra should have come on earlier, we needed more attacking options and more players getting in their box. Still work in progress. COYH

Disagree on most except Doyley, gives ball away too cheaply and has to think too hard what to do next. Hogg is another. Think I'd rather seem him replaced by Murray for creativity sake.
Not our best showing but could have scored 6. No easy games, but we will Tonk someone soon.
3/4 wins could have been 4/4 but for one nut job.
Good to see the Vic full, still pretty quiet though!

Agree Pudil has been good for us and I was only a few feet from that bloke. Entitled to his opinion but thought he was out of order. Bit of an embarrassment really. Its always going to be tough at home though as teams will come and put 11 behind the ball making it tough.

One size Fitz Hall!! I must admit I was more than a little dubious when I heard about him signing, but so far he has been immense. The block near the end was as good as a goal. Not the best performance overall but Peterboro parked the bus & came to try to avoid defeat & it makes it dull when only one team is going for it. We have played better in games this season & not won so I will quite happily take the 3 points. 4 points from the next two away games & I will be a happy chappy. I'm also predicting Leicester at home to be a belter!! COYH!!!

I didnt hear what he initially said, and I wasnt going to challenge him as had my 2 kids with me but he was suggesting Pudil was not playing well and not getting forward or overlapping enough down the wing. The bloke was a moron and Im sure if he was on the pitch would have done much better!
I actually thought Pudil played well making himself available as an outlet at every opportunity, unfortunately the ball was getting to him too slowly in the first half.

These foreign players are playing their hearts out and adapting very quickly to the Championship. We have won three out of four of our last games, playing great football at times, and trying to at all times. This against prejudiced officials and a few ungrateful ignoramus's.

Totally agree. Hopefully the whole 'they don't care about the club' myth has gone away by now. Who looked more passionate in a yellow shirt? Vydra of Sordell when he was here? Also think Pudil looked solid as usual and looks much more comfortable in his new role as it allows him to show his attacking qualities.

I think the commitment from the new players has been really good, can't fault them at all. Put it together with the good technical ability they have & I'm very optimistic. It comes to something when I was surprised when Almunia kicked long in the 1st five minutes today as I'm not used to seeing it. Teams will not be looking forward to facing us. Long may it continue. Well deserved win.
Passing in first half was too slow and predictable. Zola obviously told them to quicken up at half time and they did.
Overall an enjoyable game.
Don't agree with the contributors who thought Peterbro came to defend, I thought they were a decent team, much better than bottom of the league table would suggest. As a consequence our win was better than
might first appear.
Very impressed with young Hoban, he is clearly learning a lot from Hall and
if Forestieri manages to develop a more effective final ball he will be devastating.

The idiot who abused Pudil in first half - shame on you. Pudil is so committed, his girlfriend, son and some friends attend all home games and some away games, Pudil along with all the new players are 100% IN IT TO WIN IT !!!!

The Peterborough idiots (approx 25 of them 18-20 year olds with a couple older boys) who escaped police surveillance by climbing over the back wall in moons in the high street, who then attacked the yellow and red lion by the garden entrance throwing bottles which broke a girls nose, injured the bar man and scared the life out of the young kids in the garden, you f'in morons, as for police and stewards (where we're you ??), it's well hard to throw bottles etc ... They'd just come for trouble and left at half time, looking for more trouble, before ending up in town again. There excuse was that Watford played up at Peterborough last season last game, clearly Peterborough away this season may now be interesting !!!!

Hard fought 3 points, deserved, Peterborough played 5 in defence with two holding midfielders first half, and we lacked tempo. Second half we raised Tempo and deserved win. Doyley and Cassetti didn't cut mustard for me, we need more pace down wing ....

Two tough away games, would take two points now !!!!

At home, against the bottom club, I would have started with Forestieri on the wing, and Deeney and Vydra up front.

Deeney had a lacklustre game and should have been replaced much earlier, not least because the only way Geijo can show what he can do is to give him some game time.

1st half was like watching paint dry. AS my mrs would say, it's alright having all this foreplay but at the end of the day there must be some penetration! We just seemed to ponce around from side to side and pass for the sake of it. 2nd half much better and that is how I hope they play at fatscotsblokeville on Tuesday. When we show purpose and urgency we look a darn good side. Someone is gonna get a whooping soon.

A deserved win, can think of only the miss hit effort by sinclair and the free header that were posh's only clear cut chances...we hit the woodwork twice and created 3 or 4 other really good chances so well deserved in the end. I still think any talk of promotion is a little unrealistic at the moment, yes were not far off the top but probably not that far off the relegation zone, very early days. I am impressed with how the loan players have applied themselves, shown plenty of passion and seem to be adapting nicely, i think hogg does an awful lot of work and also just as the loans need to adapt so do our existing players to the new style. Today there were some balls given away cheaply, partly due to the lack of movement at times in the first half. Also think Zolas subs leave abit to be desired, deeney was way off the pace today and vydra should of been on for last 30 mins, also he likes to tinker with the formation, which in the 2 home games he has done it in has made us worse, still i guess he is learning aswell.

Sadly seems to be! Still a few empties and more than a few numpties. Not our greatest game. More long balls out of defence ( Neuton was missed IMO) than normal, but there were more then flashes of our intent. We could have scored six, without getting up a full head of steam. Great penalty by Vydra
Forresteri got better as game wore on ( long stud probs!)

Posh keeper was outstanding plus help of the woodwork.I think that supporters are jumping the gun and expecting far more from the side.We are steadily becoming a threat to championship sides, but i stress that we need this season to become the side that Gianfranco wants to build. Absolutely delighted for the lads and how nice for us to get the 89th minute penalty!! It is still early days but the squad really does look like it is coming together nicely. Now Hall has started to play I think we can all understand why he was signed, despite initial concerns.
Great for Vydra to have the confidence to put that one away!! Well done all.

Shame some drunken Posh fans caused trouble outside before the game, Tony Currie nearly got hit by a bottle I hear.
3 hard fought points in the bag eventually, Vydra should have come on earlier, we needed more attacking options and more players getting in their box. Still work in progress. COYH
Hopefully they got a good slap for there efforts!

Having just watched it on BBC, think we got away with a very soft penalty.

About time we had a few things go our way.... Let's take it, we have been dealt some blows so far this Season...

We grinded out a good win against a fast improving Posh side.At times we totally outplayed the opposition. There is no quickfix, time is the key.
Absolutely right holtonian. We were under pressure for much of the first half without really being in danger but we were all over them like a rash in the second half and could easily have run out 4 or 5 nil winners. These palyers that we have now will evolve slowly but surely as the seasons goes on. They are already doing so but for the numpties that believe we should be playing fluent prem footie now, well think again. Top 10 this season, play-offs next and then promotion. Simples.

All the above just shows what a tight league the Championship is. Peterborough played decently enough and are bottom: we are critical of our progress so far but just six points off top place!

So come on, let's give Pudil, Zola and ALL the players in their Yellow shirts our backing.

I've been hearing and reading comments about how some fans are giving our new signings a hard time. I think these plonkers need to open their eyes to the amazing changes that are happening. We have some amazing quality players that would never have come to the vic without the pizzos. The football is quality even though it looks predictable especially how we play it from the back and if any clever manager picks up on that our defence will be picked to pieces. We are 6points from the top!! We need to give Alex geijo a chance! I think he will have a berbatov style of play about him so please do not expect him to a deeney! chasing everything down style of player? Anyway I think overall all fans are super happy.

Amazing what you see from your executive lunch?

Felt the first half lacked zip, pace and drive but the second half much improved. However, I find it strange no comments about Troy. Sorry but he looked tired, heavy, clumsy and a "square peg in a round hole". This is team clearly capable of passing other teams "to death". Troy seems to waiting for it to lumped forward and muscle his way to goal - last season yep this season - nope. For me he is not a fit for the way I guess GZ wants to play. The sooner a workable front two is identified the better if we are to convert possession into what matters - goals!!

Well done WFC on getting the place nearly full - why can't that be done every home game? Get the east side complete/built give to the families and give the VIc end to the away. I am sure Leeds/Cardiff/Wolves
/Brum etc etc will fill it. Bums on seats = cash in the bank!

Oh and give the SW corner to Tesco - I am sure we could have a Tesco Express by next Saturday. Handy for getting a pint of milk after the match and better than the current building site we have.

Well done Exeter Hornet's missus, she obviously knows her stuff.
Stewards cannot police the streets, that's the police's job.
Besides Harry the Hornet I thought "one size" was man of the match for me.
Some supporters are always looking for one of their own players to get on the back of, there's never justification for this sort of bullying, Pudil did his best, that's all you can ask, he certainly was not our worst player yesterday. As already stated two tough games to come, a couple of points would be good. COYH

Just a personal thought---on the last few games, Watford are just two players short of a quality side capable of promotion THIS season. A right sided defender with pace and passing ability, and a forward capable of converting chances. Will Geijo cover the second? Doyley had some criticism, true, but I thought, purely defensively, the team looked better without Neuton, although, perhaps, he was missed going forward.

I make no apology that I am not totally comfortable with the foreign legions but they are certainly no more mercenary than the Brits.

If a guy plays his heart out for the club he deserves our support and we should give it 100%. Time to back the team and get things rolling, those who want to abuse our team during the game should go elsewhere.

As for that mascot. one day he will cause the away fans to riot

Tiger, Chris de nothing really much to say, has another stab at a profoundly meaningful post, another xenophobic swipe at what are our best players, a dig at poor Harry the Hornet. I suppose if you look hard enough there is always something to groan about.
What he should be condemning is the idiots that are heckling these guys, at the Peterborough fans who threw glasses in an area there were women and kids, not at a harmless Peter Pan in a hornet dress. Jeez!

Couldn't make the game on Saturday but glad we got 3 points in the bag. It is finally coming together and I for one am happy to see EVERYONE pulling together. But what concerns me is Fergusons comments in the paper and he is not alone in this, when he suggests that our fitness levels are not what they should be! The pitches are going to get heavier as the season wears on and we need to be on top of our game. Anyone else out here who thinks that we are not at our fittest?
