Simpson issues rallying cry
Graham Simpson
Graham Simpson

Graham Simpson has urged the fans to rally round the team ahead of the promotion run in.

The Watford FC chairman sat in the Rookery Stand on Saturday and watched Crystal Palace deal Watford's hope of automatic promotion a fatal blow. But Simpson is now gearing himself up for another crack at the play-offs.

"I'm disappointed for Aidy, the fans and everybody in the office because we all wanted automatic promotion so much," said Simpson.

"We now have to re-group, re-focus, hopefully get the fans behind us, lift us and have a crack at this mini tournament.

"It's there to be won," he added. "Everybody is looking at us and saying the momentum has gone and we have lost our way. We have to find that momentum again. It can be done."

For more from Simpson on the future of Aidy Boothroyd, see tomorrow's Watford Observer.

Sage - surely the captain is:

Watford's leading happy clapper
Posted by: chris, hemel on 3:46pm Thu 24 Apr 08
James - Agree with your selection entirely. I put same team forward earlier this week.

For me TS is our most skillful player and should be given a free role behind DH. JM and LA to give us pace and width. H

However front 4 need balls to feet, not 4 feet off the ground.

Also just read that Jewell has paired up with his ex-Wigan Assistant Hutchings. IF they're regrouping how about offering them NE for Robert Earnshaw??

3 Points and nothing less on Saturday.

Lets be ambitious and play 3-5-2, giving a debut to Liam Henderson. How about: Lee, DeMerit, Bromby, Shittu, Smith, O'Toole, Eustace, McAnuff, Stewart, Liam Henderson, Priskin. Subs: D Henderson, Ellington, Doyley, Ainsworth, Poom or Sadler.
I think it is time to get the younger players involved if they are on form. Will Wiliams be fit for play-offs, if so he could fit in that midfield in place of McAnuff, but now is a bit too soon.
The news about Aidy's future can't be earth shattering as it hasn't been leaked. GS is disappointed FOR AB but not WITH him. Aidy should stay, but have a good rest in the summer to recharge his batteries and the running of the club should be changed, as I have said before. Enjoy the game and get behind the team!!

Negative as it is, we need to go with 5 in midfield with smith sitting in front of eustace and williamson. One up front (henderson) because he is capable of hold the ball up, is negative but lets face it, we dont look like scoring with two. Smith gets forward in the middle and for once we dont have the opponents midfield taking control of the game which has happened time after time at home this season.

Here is quite a frightening summary for you all . Watford were top and 9 points clear on the 23rd October 2007
If we started the league from that point and just took the points from the following games to the present day we would now be sitting just a few places above the drop zone in 18th place!!!! With a total of 40 points.
17th Blackpool 40
18th Watford 40
19th Leicester 39
20th Coventry 37
21st Barnsley 35
22nd Southampton 34
23rd Scunthorpe 24
24th Colchester 23
only 6 points above 3rd from bottom !!
And 17 points behind 1st, 2nd and 3rd
Which is WBA, Hull and Crystal Palace on 57 points
Then stoke on 55, Bristol on 51 and then QPR and Sheff utd on 50 …
After all that I am just glad we got those points on the table in the first 3 months of the season. I hope Aidy realises how bad it’s been on a points and entertainment level …
However I am not yet going to call for his head….
We now need to get behind the team and hope for a 3rd brilliant day out at Wembley, I have always said if you could guarantee going up by the play offs then that would be the preferred way to go up, you get a great day out, a presentation at the end, loads of money for the club and a trophy…… on current form it looks unlikely but then again we can all dream cant we ……………………

The support AB has had off the fans has been fantastic home and away, so i do not want hear any moaning from AB or GS on this matter.I know because i have been to a lot of the away games as well as home. The home fans have been frustrated of late and who can blame them, the stats back this up and we are fed up of watching this complete dross and hearing the now same old excuses from AB saying "we have learnt from this & this wont happen again" rubbish.

I think AB should stay if we do not go up and unload a lot of the high earners (his players) who are not performing for him and also change the style which clearly does not work being so predictable!

GS can say all he likes about AB staying but if next season the start is poor and watford fans start talking with their feet then he will go!!!!!!!!!
Posted by: Holly68, watford on 6:18pm Thu 24 Apr 08
If we dont go up he has to go, sorry, two failed seasons, poor in prem, poor in championship for 6 months, v poor at home all season, I want to be entertained

without a doubt saturday is our biggest game of the season, nothing short of a win will do, we must get three points and take the pressure off the blackpool tie.
I say go 4-3-3 it worked well in the last few minutes against west brom, and the good thing about this division is teams are not good enough to score with only a couple of attacks, so i say go at scunthorpe right from the off and finish the game before half time. anyone remember the qpr game? we need to do to scunthorpe what qpr did to us. lets finish on a high, make the playoffs and get revenge on palace and the other teams.

It is frightening to sack a manager who keeps you up, gets promoted and play offs in 2 of his first 3 full seasons. can only imagine many people werent around between 2001 and 2005 for the inbetween years. Boothroyd has alot to be accountable not least managing peoples expectations better. But sacking him is that really the way ahead? even if he rebuild for 2/3 years on the edge of the playoffs is it such a bad thing?
Posted by: The enlightened one, Garston on 7:00pm Thu 24 Apr 08
Yep,get him gone.Just heard GS has been taken away by men in white coats,he's almost as dilusional as boofers.
Posted by: Darren, Canada on 7:31pm Thu 24 Apr 08
As mucg as I don't like some of the things Adise has said and done (or not done), I do not see any sense in calling for him to leave. I think he desperately needs an experienced number two. As for Saturday's team selection all I would ask is that we have a back-up keeper on the bench. Risking the whole season on such an important game would be foolish.
Posted by: ptquinn, Watford on 7:39pm Thu 24 Apr 08
For those calling for Boothroyds head get real.Yes the performances have been awful since Christmas. However, success doesn't happen overnight. What gives us the devine right to be promoted. Yes some of the information that comes out of Boothroyds mouth is a load of twaddle. Sacking a manager is not always the answer.
People are saying he has 'lost the dressing room' Has he? Has a player come up to you and told you this or that or is it a case of fans making 2 & 2 = 5.
We need to get behind our team.
If you dont like what you see vote with your feet and dont go.
I think the club will give Bothroyd 5 years before giving him the boot. He is only three years into that.
One thing i would urge the club is to get an old hand to advise him again.
Also with rumours abound as per the head line in the WFo of overseas investors, thnigs may change for the better.

Good stuff ptquinn. This team desparately needs our backing now!! Can the 'booers' and the 'stomp out sulking if we let a goal in brigade', please vote with your feet with immediate effect and leave the Vic to the hardcore few thousand that will support the golden boys through this rough patch. C'mon Aidy, shut these tossers up!!

Shut up Simpson, we've had quite enough of you already this season.

We already know what you're going to say you predictable moron. If closing down the official boards wan't enough, i think its disgusting how you try to manipulate opinion on here.

I will say it again: it isn't the league position that is the problem; rather it has been the total capitulation since Xmas.

Performances have been dreadful, we have been stuffed at home more times than i care to remember, the so-called big signings have all flopped, and clearly the manager has lost the dressing room.

All of you idealists on here suggesting tactics and selection: do you really think this deluded little pratt will actually change anything? Of course he won't...arrogant men like him do not....they just sink further and further into denial.

At what point this year has Boothroyd put his hands up and admitted he got it wrong? On the other hand how many times has he laid into his players for a "dreadful performance".

Simpson, i know you have no intention of replacing him...you lack the guts and conviction. But spare us the **** please, we've heard it all before.

BTW Johnboy, i salute you. You actually went to the trouble of saving my predictions...i was right wasn't I?

So here we go: another home howler on saturday...we will nick a point but go down to blackpool on the last day.

C'mon clappers, do you really want to be involved in the play offs...we wouldn't stand a chance with the crap that currently pulls on a yellow shirt.

A seventh place finish...god only knows what next season will bring...hopefully a change of manager and chairman.

BOOTHROYD OUT! BOOTHROYD OUT!
Posted by: WFC & Proud, Watford on 8:29pm Thu 24 Apr 08
Posted this on the "John returns to Fulham" article but I doubt the likes of Colin will read it there so here you go again.

It's interesting that the "miserable boo'ers" never answer a straight question on who they would bring in once they've forced-out the board, manager & majority of playing squad.
It might lead a cynic to believe they've not thought their argument through the next logical steps. For the boo'ers, feel free to put in constructive arguments and not the usual "any change is a good change", "I've had enough", etc comments.

Assumption time - for what I believe is the worst-case scenario. As posted elsewhere, Mark Ashton departs in the summer leaving a two-man board; Graham Simpson & Lord Ashcroft. Aidy accepts a job somehwere else & resigns. What does it mean in the long term?

Who is there that would (A) make a difference off the pitch; (B) on the pitch and (C) you would be comfortable with?

Other rumours suggest two possible bids to buy the club are "in the pipeline"; encouraging or worrying?

The manager: who's likely to come to a club where a vocal minority of our 11,000 home fan base (in a town of around 80,000 an hour's journey or less from established Prem clubs) now seem to expect top-flight football by right; something we've managed for around 10 seasons in 127 years of history.

How long are those of you that want Aidy & various players sacked at the end of his 3rd full season of management (he'd been a coach before that) prepared to wait for your new setup to get you to where you want to be?
1 season?
5 seasons?

How are you going to measure your approval: playing attractive football, achieving promotion back to the top flight by any means, the position you finish at the end of a season? Or something else?

I can't see anyone other than an "asset stripper" being interested in running our club; the health campus & plans to re-vamp West Watford in general make the ground's location inviting as an investment opportunity, not a sporting venue. Sir Elton's unlikely to lob huge piles of money at the Club now; where do you suggest we start looking?

Furthermore, what if the ground was sold - where would you relocate to? At what cost? Who's going to raise the money? Which other Club would you want to merge with if that was the only way of staying in business? (It nearly happened years back; we all got angry at the possibility.)

Which managers available now are credible alternatives i.e. they meet your criteria for being a "good manager"? I've seen suggestions such as Paul Ince (he's been a manager for roughly the same time as Aidy) but I doubt he'd leave MK Dons and Billy Davies (might get you to the top flight but had less success than Aidy in trying to stay there).

To talk about now; I'm as 'confused' as everyone by the financial situation at the Club, what the board's plan B (& C etc) is for the future, I don't think we've played "well" since October (Sheff Weds at home: 2-0 up in 15 mins then 75 mins of hanging-on to a lead with Adam Johnson & Marlon King in the team) and reckon we're playing with less confidence than for a long time.
However, a play-off place is still in our hands (we can't make automatic promotion save for the most unlikely set of results in other games), I reckon the Youth, Academy & long-term plans to develop our own players are among the best in football and I still believe Aidy is one of the best young managers around. He may need help (and Mr Bassett is not that help!) from an experienced manager (leaving aside whatever we think happened with Keith Burkinshaw) to fulfil his potential and I think he's listening to too much advice when he should trust his instincts again as in the last two seasons.

Though i may not know all the facts,i feel Graham Simpson is a good bloke ( i wait to be shot down) and from what i am led to believe has backed Aidy 100% in the transfer market,if these transfers have not worked it must be just as frustrating for him as it is us the supporters. I have watched many of the home games and alot of them have been very depressing,i have found this site refreshing in the fact that it highlights the fact that there are supporters out there that share similar views to me rather than the picture that Aidy would like everyone to believe ie. Everything is perfect.
Whether it be Mr G Simpson, the booers, the clappers or the in between i think we all share the same love which is Watford Football Club.
It is time to unite, to get 3pts and keep the momentum going at Blackpool !Then who knows ....
Lastly i dont think anyone could criticise the supporters who through some very indifferent performances have carried on paying out good money to follow their team.
Hopefully the players can reward that support with a win !!
Posted by: Hexham Hornet, Hexham on 8:32pm Thu 24 Apr 08
Zip, when was the last time you got behind the team? I can't remember you ever making a positive comment and I object to you speaking in the first person plural(saying we instead of I in case you didn't undersatnd), as you do not speak for all of us. Speak for your self but do not assume you have everybody's agreement!! Aidy won't get kicked out, but he may move on. Now you have shouted for his removal and also for GS to go can you say who should be put in their place? If Aidy is sacked how would you then recruit a replacement, as we won't have the funds after paying Aidy off for his contract?
If we don't go up there will need to be a lot of changes and some pruning of the staff on and off the pitch, but I don't envisage AB getting sacked and/or GS just walking away. As a shareholder, I don't want this. As a fan I am not happy either, but be realistic and look beyond your anger. There are both footballing decisions and financial decisions that need to be taken into account.

Reading many of these posts it seems that they are from those people under 40 who can only remember the relatively good times. For those abit older in the tooth recall riviting games against Halifax, Barrow & Gateshead. The high expectation level from the promising start has heightened frustration when things don't go according to plan. The relaxation of the maximum wage sounded the death knell for small teams like ours.Look at Burnley,Blackpool & pne once great clubs that produced and retained star players will probably never reach those heights consistently again.Yo yoing is the best we can hope for.We have done exceptionly well over the last 30 odd years strangely better than we did when the maximum wage existed. To the average fan winning is everything and how it is achieved be it 442, 433,long ball, short ball doesn't really matter. If we played a passing game & still lost regularly would we be satisfied to say we were entertained,I think not.Sacking Aidy is not the answer, however, given Watford's past history suggests that if we are not promoted & have a poor season then he may be walking.Having got that off my chest, lets get behind the glory boys tomorrow.

Colin (Mystic Meg), yet more scoreline predictions. After your famous predicted defeat on opening day at Wolves, recently a thrashing by WBA and numerous statements finishing with either Adie Out (in caps - impressive) or 'you have been warned' I just wonder where your numerical skills come from. I do not have a personal hatred for you but you are starting to irritate me. I will be back in dear old blighty late July and would welcome the chance to hear why you have such a passionate dislike for all things Watford face-to-face. I will be keeping in touch on this site throughout the close season and indeed once pre-season and friendlies start, as that is the time when I will be in Watford. For me one of the South Oxhey pubs would be ideal, but as we get nearer the time, let me know if you have a favourite local. I would enjoy the chance to give you some of my opinions, as I have had to endure so many of yours.

well said darren, colin has been a real pain this season with his constant criticism of the club. i personally have not commented on his posts all season as i dont want him to have the satisfaction.

trouble is, some of what he says is valid, the team haven`t been playing great football and some of the changes aidy makes during games are too little too late to make any real impact, yet i still stand by him.

to get rid of the gaffer, players and board leaves so much rebuilding work we will have no chance at all of getting anywhere for absolute years. the only way to realistically build a decent club and team is to keep together for as long as possible, simple as. just look at the greatest managers and clubs like arsenal and man utd and the point is proven. Boothroyd and simpson to stay.

I say you chaps, this Zippy Colin creature seems to be a bit of a stinker, what?

He reminds me of a very rum cove at my boarding school,he was called creepy colin, the sort who avoided games but always seemed to be hanging around the showers when we came in after matches.

No-one liked having him in their dorm and he is the only blighter who used to beg to be de-bagged.

A really smelly, obnoxious, oily little tick.
Always sucking up to old JB the head.
In the upper sixth,he was the only fellow to vote against inviting the girls school to the christmas dance,he said that dancing with each other would build school spirit.

JB agreed with him,but the rest of us just pushed off down the pub and left them to it.

A most unpopular chap with us,although old JB seemed to hang on his every word.He used to write it all down as I recall.

To be fair to old JB he devoted a lot of evenings to improving Creepy`s latin, though I suppose being unmarried(well most de-frocked priests are)he had the time .

We were always amazed to hear that the vocal latin exercises emanating from JB`s study, were not the usual ones but more like deep rapid grunting sounds accompanied by a piggy type squealing.

Still I was a hopeless duffer at latin so what do I know?

Creepy went off to join the priesthood too,in South America I believe. He always said that is why he needed to be good at latin as he wanted to talk with the young boys there in their own languague.

Still I think that a lot of Zippo Colin`s stuff on here is very similar to old creepy`s P of V about anything he did not understand.

We had a slogan for him as he was so fond of Latin. We used to say that everything he said was an example of

"Wanko Wankerium"

but then as I say Latin not my strong suit,What?

This is a rallying call from the guy at the top who actually saved the club from going out of business and knows the problems we have at present.

Unlike many that post on this site, Simpson's nobodys fool and this is also a wake-up call for Aidy & the team, talking about refocus, regaining momentum etc.

He understands football, he knows things need to improve and wants to help make it happen, as supporters we can also help and really get behind whatever team Aidy selects tomorrow.

In the meantime, I expect the moronic and abusive posts will continue from the low life losers who seek to fill this site with their foul and pointless ramblings, whatever the article is about.

The trouble with Simpson is, he forgets that the supporters put there hands in there pockets to help save the club when the board had spent what we had on stupid contracts for players.
We have to buy our season tickets before the present season has finished, what other supporters would agree to buy season tickets in March because the board/manager have spent the money we had.
As supporters I think we are entitled to criticise the board the manager and the club for the rubbish we have to watch on the field and listen to off it. If Simpson and Boothroyd don’t like it tuff. The sooner he sells the club the better for everyone.
The other thing Simpson should do is support the Watford Observer and stop knocking them for reporting the truth? If he dose not like it he should reply to there question when they are asked.
Posted by: Hapless Horn on 12:51pm Fri 25 Apr 08
I say--a bit OTT surely?

Now look Jones Minor go and write out a THOUSAND TIMES
"I must not post completely ignorant rubbish about matters that I clearly do not fully comprehend"
