DeMerit unhappy with captaincy role

Watford club captain Jay DeMerit admits he is still struggling to come to terms with losing his role on the field.

The American has seen the captain's armband moved around the pitch from Danny Shittu to Richard Lee and it has now settled with John Eustace.

DeMerit made his first start for the Hornets since last month's Hull defeat on Saturday but losing the captaincy has undoubtedly caused friction between him and manager Aidy Boothroyd.

DeMerit said: "I do not think it has ironed itself out yet but that is between me and the manager.

"It's not time to be selfish. There has to be unity and whether we agree or not he makes the decisions."

The team were locked in the dressing room for an hour after the weekend's miserable defeat to relegated Scunthorpe. The Hornets have to regroup and secure their play-off place at Blackpool next Sunday and DeMerit insists the post-match inquest was necessary.

"Everyone had their say and there is not supposed to be one leader," he added. "There are 22 out there it's the only way to get things done.

"It's not always going to be rosy and we have all got things wrong. But we need to stick together."

this has been the cause over the later months NO real leadership - with the manager not knowing who to appoint?

You need a captain who is heard and has the respect of the team and management!

interesting rumour going around - boothroyd, ashton going to charlton - ince coming to watford?? no doubt the rumour mill will be in full swing when the planned takeover is complete.

Well we can be guaranteed of one thing next year...JDM wont be here, he will go the same way as everybody else who has been brave enough to speak their mind and put his head above the parapit

Five different captains in one season goes to explain the disharmony in the dressing room this season.

I was not a Mahon fan, but I do recall AB at the fans forum saying that he was the glue that stuck the team together.

So maybe fans like me who got on his back and eventually got him sold to QPR should hold our hands up and take some of the responsibility.

On the other hand its AB's call, and he gets paid a fortune to make these decisions, and he seems to have got this wrong too.

I heard a rumour that you make things up old chap, anything in it?

clearly those who have normal mental functions would realise that there is no "planned takeover" as yet, there is just interest on both sides.

The rest is premature speculation as is common on here.

I do not subscibe to MM `s view of things, either.
However JDM has (like many) had a poor second half to the season and I do not think that being Captain has helped him.

I did think he was better on saturday but the CAPTAIN,Eustace was very poor indeed.

How has JDM had a poor second half??? Since the arrival of LB, one of AB`s better buys, he has been keeping the bench warm..

can't see that one myself....

can't help thinking that although mahon was limited, we wouldn't be in this mess if he had remained at the club/in the team???

Not so MM!

Played right back for a few games and was not playing well prior to LB & DS being paired.

however I would prefer LB & JDM to form a pairing.

Chris very big off you to admit to questioning yourself over Gavin Mahon you are not alone and although i was very much a fan ,Honest, OF Gav i had many a debate in my family about him and i was in the minority as not everyone appreciated what he did for us BUT having been told by Boothroyd he was being let go as he would not be good enough in the premiership as we were going there i bet he is having a slight smile to himself as Boothroyd is failing so dramatically ,and just ask yourself what other team in the top 6 would in January SELL there CAPTAIN and Star Striker and still expect to get promoted ! PERHAPS Boothroyd should take that riduculous headset off why does he need one when he is yards from his coaches AND what other manager in this league needs one Can you imagine Warnock,Pulis, mowbra
y,Johnson ,Mcarthy ,Brown,Magilton needing one LAUGHABLE and anyway be good if he took it off and listened to a few people !!

Finally BRING BACK THEO ROBINSON NOW at least he knows where the net is and Hereford are promoted IT'S TIME Boothroyd .

I have to disagree re Eustace - he was one of the few putting in the effort on Saturday, and an apparant poor showing by him was down to the fact he was pulled all over the pitch having to cover the ground for 3 or 4 other players - JJOT the biggest culprit of watching the game pass him by around him.

It's that kind of work that Mahon had to put in and never got credit for. I hope Eustace isn't going to become another scapegoat for the failings of others around him / tactics.

There were a number of times when Eustace just hoofed it over the top like Mahon used to. It's not something Eustace did when he first came here and I may be wrong, but I doubt Mahon is playing those kind of balls at QPR - this comes down to direction by Aidy.

Simmo, I find that in your calmer posts I often agree with you old chap.

I too defended Gavin Mahon & I also defend Stewart often(not always possible)

JE is a slightly younger like for like change but no quicker, not as good in the air & recently far less effective.

a good start by JE has been followed by dreadful displays in last few games and he caused the goal on saturday.

I hope that Williams will take the holding role next season and we bring in another forward running midfielder to compete with o`Toole.

The results prove the error in dumping GM but then fans do not really watch the game closely and a lot of them now want to leave DH out when his issue is the lack of a decent partner or crosses to attack.

TR is available after saturday I believe and I have already called for his return for the Play-offs...IF we get there!
Posted by: Hapless Horn on 1:43pm Mon 28 Apr 08
Concerned, sorry but eustace has been very poor since his return and it his lack of pace that causes so many stupid fouls from him.(as in goal at WBA)
I do quite like him ,as I liked Gavin Mahon but he was dreadful on saturday and against Palace he was even worse.O`Toole did his job v Palace and suffered by chasing shadows.

On saturday, tommy worked back very well to win the ball, passed it to JE only for him to give it away with a pass that set up the goal.

Posted by: Concerned, Watford on 2:13pm Mon 28 Apr 08
Point noted - at fault for goal, and he set high standards from his first few games, but I would argue he was tiring at that point, having to make up for lack of work from JJOT, TP and JM.

JJOT has played 4 or 5 games too many and the midfield suffers. But, football is a game of opinions so we all see things a bit different - well, apart from Aidy who seems to be on another planet!
Posted by: watfordkev, Watford on 2:20pm Mon 28 Apr 08
Mahon = scapegoat. Mahon's position became untenable. While he was nver gonna be a world beater in the Prem he was given a rough deal by the crowd and the club.

Eustace = great on arrival. Probably worst 45 mins from him 2nd half on Saturday, but he was hardly alone was he, especially if the high and not-very handsome approach is team orders. A pity, as he has looked to be capable of picking good passes and rarely losing possession.

I saw one of my most optimistic friends on the way to the game on Saturday - he predicted 2 defeats and 7th place...

Final post on this from me.
concerned, thanks for agreeing point, but still cannot see O`toole as doing other than having worked very hard all game(not esp effective)agree with rest of your analysis.

watford kev, actually Gav was outstanding up to xmas in Premiership.

williamson was the weakness this season, even when we were winning. Aidy could not see it and fixed what was not broken, breaking it in the process.

3 wins with clean sheets during W`son ban! pretty good clue I thought!

Funnily enough,
recently williamson has been better.

Must keep O`Toole in as we are so short of goals and he is a likely source.

what other team in the top 6 would in January SELL there CAPTAIN

Isn't that exactly what Stoke did. Look where they are now.
Posted by: Hexham Hornet, Hexham on 4:55pm Mon 28 Apr 08
At least Jay shows he cares, even though you can have a skipper as someone who is not an automatic first choice anymore. In a way there should be 11 potential captains all working for each other and pushing the team on, with one having responsibility for the big decisions - such as who goes up and who covers back, who takes key set plays etc. There are not 11 natural leaders in the team as at least 7 of them are so lacking in confidence they would prefer to be invisible. Eustace is a natural captain, but e needs to remember that his positional role is as important - instead of covering for others he should be putting them right and keep his own game together. The team we have look unlikely to score again on Saturday and need an injection of confidence, or confident players around them, to bring them out of their current state. Players like Liam Henderson and Lewis Young are oozing confidence at the moment and could give the team a lift just by being involved. Perhaps Saturday is too big a game to put htem in, but it is also too big a game to put in a load of players who just want to get away for the summer as they have had enough this year. The only players that merit their place as automatic first choice are Lee, Shittu, Bromby (if fit), Smith and Eustace. The rest could be replaced by anyone who is up for it from the youth and reserve teams.

Throughout the booing of Gavin i stated my disgust on this website, only to be told in no uncertain terms to wake up and stop being a ****. It amazes me that now some people can actually see what they're missing, opinions are changed. Perhaps the same people should stop booing Stewart now as he has certainly improved his form and is in on merit over Sadler at the moment.

I see sage has transformed himself into hapless horn, and to think him and VoR had a go at me for posting as zip.

The Demerrit episode just serves to underline the discontent in the dressing room at the moment....countless others must also be frustrated by the manager.

Indeed the team have lacked leadership over the last few months...passing the captains armband about has only served to unsettle things further.

I really do feel time is running out for the Boothroyd era now...the very nature of the man suggests he will not stick around if he feels the crowd are against him...in which case a credible alternative must be found and fast.

I'd settle for...John Ward...Paul Ince...Billy Davies....Gary Johnson...even a Kenny, Luther and Nigel coaching team.

Or Tommy Mooney? ok we'll have to wait a few more years for that one, but i feel he could be a manager in the mould of Roy Keane...i'm sure the vic would welcome him back with open arms...and i bet he could still knock them in unlike our current excuse for strikers.

So sorry to see the position our team is in,almost the same situation as Southampton are in now.BAD management they are skint and almost relegated,at least we will not be relegated THIS season but next season will see us strugling.Sorry but we must change the whole of the backroom staff. There are good players at our club, but they are lost due to bad decissions by the manager.

Sounds more and more like Boothroyds lost the dressing room, with Jays comments and Ellingtons snide remark at the post match about not playing, at least he can probably say what he likes as he cost the club so much money we will be lucky to get a penny for himWe have made the same mistakes that we did under Vialli and co, gambled on getting in Prem and now looks unlikely, they will probaly ask us to bail them out again this time next season.

Look old chap get a grip please!

Whilst it is almost certainly true that the manager chappie is going as gaga as old Jb,to compare this with the Vialli meltdown suggests you have as much in-breeding in your recent past as does poor Mr Ozzy.

Furthermore of course we can sell that very frustrating Mr Ellington for money, even he is better than anyone that Derby have.

Now promise me that there will be no more of this kind of thing and we will say no more about it.

Ok old chap?

I really have to catch the Apsley to London train very shortly but just wanted to correct you Mitchell old chap.

The Captain(Captain Smith) came from a family of tradespeople made good(well as good as those sort can) who served my Mother`s side of the family for generations.

The hapless Captain(see the clever link,eh?) was actually a native of Stoke on Trent, clearly therefore grew up knowing sod all about icebergs and consequently ran straight into one!

It's ok for Jay to be annoyed but to voice this now is just wrong.
We are on the verge of a season defining game and coming off a truly awful run.A leader would try to rally the troops not act completely selfish and destroy any team unity that was left.
He started off his Watford career very well but will be ending it on a poor run of form and a big mouth-shame.

Daily Mail - Furious Demerit set to quit Watford in the summer

Am I not mistaken in thinking we had the same thing with Jay at the end of last season, and possibly the one before, where the press said he was on his way out. I don't remember there being any offers for him and so he was never on the way out. Which clubs in their right minds now would contemplate buying any of our team, and who would they go for. The only players that might be seen as good buys are Smith and Shittu, but they are not the players we would want to lose. Unless DeMerit is out of contract he won't just walk away, but doesn't he have another year to run?

Fulham are among clubs monitoring USA international defender Jay DeMerit's situation at Watford.
Posted by: chris, the vic on 9:06am Wed 30 Apr 08
Jay is a player who gives 100% however his positional play is not good enough yet maybe due to his late entry into senior soccer and his evaluation of his worth in both captaincy and financial worth are both overstated.

I would like to see him stay, establish himself as a first team starter and then consider other matters.

But he is headstrong and will move on and become an overpaid squad member elsewhere who's self belief will not be matched by his on field performances and his potential will not be fully realised.

In this case Aidy is right.
Posted by: chris, hemel on 1:01pm Wed 30 Apr 08
Mitch - Great post, this site needs a bit of humour.

Oxheypaul - Agree your post re Doyley. I've lost count the number of times he's stood off and allowed crosses into the box leading to goals.

As for Demerit leaving, I suspect alot more will be encouraged to leave as part of Plan B. There's a massive wage bill to cut to cover loses, the East Stand rebuild and reduced income with capacity reduction.

If AB stays I wonder if he will be taking a pay cut??

Excatly Jay, then why bleet to the media at such a crucial time?
"It's not time to be selfish. There has to be unity and whether we agree or not he makes the decisions."
There are not too many who think that Adie is making the right decisions, but I think Jay's comments are poor. Like many "professional" footballers these days, he seems to have forgotten very quickly where he came from. He was happy to talk of his 'beans on toast' days and fair play to him for all of the success he has earned for himself, but sorry Jay, the timing is awful.

Posted by: jayR on 5:18am Thu 1 May 08
The reaction to these comments is ridiculous. "Things haven't been ironed out, but that is between me and the manager." And then he says even though he may not agree, it's his and the team's job to follow the manager. If/when Watford are eliminated from the promotion battle, it will be because they did just what JDM suggested, and followed the manager. Hopefully JDM continues to follow him out the door and to a better situation. (Demerit that is. I couldn't care less where Aidy ends up.) (Also, it was really no surprise he played poorly at RB, since he'd never played there before.)

A close friend of Jay de Merit informs me that Jay has told him that he “has to get away from Watford”. The atmosphere in the dressing is, in his words, “terrible” .
Posted by: Hapless Horn on 10:24am Thu 1 May 08
Dear Professor

I suspect that the atmosphere is indeed terrible judging by the uncordinated and passionless displays on the pitch.

It reminds me of the atmosphere in the old school dorm after creepy Colin had dined rather too well on one of old JB`s special curries.

I think young Mr Boothroyd has lost touch with reality and it appears as though the players have no belief at all.

If we should get into the playoffs then it has to be judged overall as a decent effort, but if we do not go up,and it is hard to believe that we will, then either the manager needs to go or half the players do.

If we should go up then we need at least 8 new players anyway.

The manager is adopting a seige mentality and starting to distance himself from performances and results.

Clearly he has stopped listening to anyone normal and if we fail to get into the playoffs then I would think that a resignation would be best, but there are no real grounds for dismissal.

I feel sorry for the chairman I must say. He had little option but to back the manager, and by implication, the Chief Executive against the Russo `s,but it may well be that they are proven correct.

Let us hope for the best,as old JB used to say when inspecting the boy`s showers whilst the first years used them!
