Tommy Smith was crowned Watford's Player of the Season at the club's Awards Evening last night.
Smith pipped Dan Shittu and Darius Henderson to the top gong following a series of impressive performances on the right wing.
The Hemel Hempstead-born player described it is as an "honour" to follow the likes of Tony Coton, John McClelland, David James and Heidar Helguson in lifting the coveted award.

Well deserved. Tommy is an exciting player to watch, has a great football brain and is one of the few members of the team who can take people on with the ball.
Wish he would have more shots at goal as I think he would score more than the current strikers we have.

Well done Smithy. If only we had 11 players on the pitch that could match Tommy's commitment we would have secured one of those elusive automatic promotion spots.
A top player, a top bloke and Watford through and through.

Star man Tommy. Head and shoulders above everyone this season.
Play him up front with Ellington for BOTH legs with Hull and we will be at Wembley again.
We have won the play-offs twice, the hat-trick is on, but we need to play Smithy as a striker, and ball to feet.

I'd still contend that we should go 4-5-1 with Smith and Jobi pushing on to support Ellington. Eustace, JJOT/Williamson and Williams (if fit) providing cover in the centre.

Well done Tommy - richly deserved (albeit in a very weak field). Now if we could just get another Tommy (Mooney) back for the play-offs. Don't laugh - he's younger than Dean Windass!

Goodness. What a difference a season makes! Whilst I too voted for Tommy as player of the year and thoroughly deserved it was, how many of those applauding him now were telling us what a dirty greedy B*****d he was when he returned to WFC? Fickle supporters yet again!

as pointed out earlier, we have one the play offs twice, but we have also lost through not taking chances in the home leg, all those remember Blackburn? we did play so much better with out darius! lets get behind the team and no more squabbling! those of you who didn't want us to reach the playoff's, will you be going to boo or cheer the team?

Congratulations to Smithy on a well deserved Player of the Season!
Shame very few others could be as consistent and at least make an effort even if having a poor game.
Some important goals too.

Fowler has done really well for Cardiff...on the treatment table.
I think we needed a bit more than a couple of highly paid strikers thanks...we already have 1 or 2 of those anyway.
Sorry but there are some players who deserve success and our support.
I really don't know why people like you waste time on here when its clear you hate the club and would rather be else where.

To be honest we have been poor with an awful stlye of football at the moment plus a few overpaid, underperfor
ming guys.
However that does not mean we should just stop supporting the side and cry like a babbies just because "we were in the Prem" as if we are bunch of arogrant big boys,.
Its been disappointing to only just get into the play-offs after a decent start but lets just somehow we can find form like in 2006.

Well done Smithy-fully deserved. How the hell could Henderson finish third? Also well done to JJ-he fully deserves the young player award. Des[/quote] I agree O'Toole has generally done well even if maybe needed to be rested/dropped a few weeks earlier.
Good player for the future and we have a few of those if given the chance and allowed to play FOOTBALL rather than the current style.

I am a relatively newcomer to the watford legions, but it is a brilliant club with passionate fans and a very stubborn manager! I would call the yellows my new 2nd (footy)with glasgow rangers being my first. I have seen four watford home games this season and I can honestly say with all my football loving heart that I wish rangers had Tommy Smith just for the uefa cup final because we might bloody win it! oh by the way if the yellows make it to the play off final I hope its against palace because I think watford have a hold over them, smith to score in the final and doris to miss a penalty but we still win!

Well said on everything Zip! Smith is the most unskillfull winger I think I have ever seen. Does he possess any form of tricks? I see McNammee scored again for Swindon, think he would do better than powdernuff out on the left.

I agree he is not that skillful and not very quick but he has done much more than "Powedernuff" who is supposed to have such things.
McNamee would be a good player if he was allowed time on the ball and asked not to help out in defence.

I think all our quicker players like Stewart,Kabba and Ellington plus Jobi are too lazy whereas somebody like Smithy makes up for that with work rate in getting up and down the line.
I'd rather have a team of Smiths than most of the other players.

Hope he gets an improved contract.
Shame about some of our supporters, they just don't deserve players like him!

Have you been to see the Reserves and Youth side in recent weeks?
They play good football and there are some decent young players probably better than O'Toole who if given a chance for US could be pretty useful.
Maybe you expect the next Rooney or Gerrard from us...
Get in the real world and stop pretending are we some big club who have a right to be in the Prem and should have massive stars in the first team/Youth system.

People like Zip need to get into their heads will be nothing more than a bottom half Premiership side at BEST and that is only if an Elton John type bloke came along to fund the expensive and massive cost of trying to achieve such a thing.
Maybe you are Mark Ashton who thinks we can be a top 10 Premiership!

I think that the Harefield Academy will come into its own in the next 2 to 3 years, as it gets a reputation. It will bring players through and is starting to produce some useful players - O'Toole, Henderson and Young are just the start. We will not get the cream of the crop as they will go to Chelsea, Arsenal, Man U etc, but we should get some of the best of the rest in the Watford region and hopefully beyond.
We need to look at building a team from basics, as we obviously are not very good at buying players - see the long running debates by so many fans - and we seem to be short of funds. Lets hope it does not mean we will be bringing players through with the sole aim of selling them at a profit - obviously there will be an element of this as the academy needs to be paid for, but the main aim should be to produce a top Watford team that can eventually sustain a place in the top flight. As regards Tommy Smith's season, he has shown heart and that he wants the best for the club. He has been positive and has worked harder than most people in the league. His tackling and clearing off the line have been beyond the call of duty for most wide midfielders. He has shown that he can play wide and beat the defender and he has also reminded us that he can cut inside and play through the middle. He has been man of the match for us the most times, especially after AJ went back to Boro. If everybody played as well as him we would have been promoted by now!! Well done Tommy.
