Not since GT or the days of Luther scoring a debut hat-trick have England been so Hornet friendly.

There is Ray Lewington on the bench for starters. Ray gave us some great times despite working in impossible circumstances and you can’t help but feel delighted that he has now got such a big job in world football.

Then there are the former players to consider. In recent years we have seen the likes of Ashley Young, Tom Cleverley, Ben Foster, Adam Johnson, Andros “worst loanee ever” Townsend and Gabi Abonglahor in or around the squad.

We are well represented with former players and with the likes of Jonathan Bond, Lewis McGugan, Josh McEachran and Troy Deeney, hopefully we'll be well represented in the future.

Yet despite all that, it feels increasingly hard to care about England in the same way we all care about Watford.

As a kid I remember being asked if I would rather see England win the World Cup or Watford win The FA Cup?

At the time it felt like an impossible question to answer.

Today, The FA Cup has been devalued beyond all recognition, yet still I would now without doubt take Manuel Almunia lifting big ears at Wembley over Stevie G lifting that big gold lump in Brazil.

I would take it in a heartbeat.

I’d take a win in the League Cup Final. I’d take a playoff final victory, possibly less. A win over Derby on Saturday perhaps? Maybe. Possibly not, but you get the idea.

To be honest I don’t know why this is. I don’t think it has anything to do with Watford’s team being full of “Johnny foreigners”, or England not being quite as good as they used to be (I am nothing if not used to supporting an often disappointing football team).

Perhaps it is because so many players prioritise club over country now, maybe it is down to the poor scheduling of seemingly endless England friendlies.

Possibly, just possibly, it’s because we’re all Scottish now, subconsciously adopting the nation of our noisy neighbours out of support for our wee lad Ikechi.
