Another international break is already upon us. A tally of six points from our past four games is good going for a newly promoted side, considering the opposition that we’ve faced.

In Arsenal, West Ham United and Leicester City, Watford have come up against teams who were all in rich veins of form or in the upper reaches of the league standings.

And in Stoke City, we’ve faced an established Premier League outfit who have forged a reputation as being one of the toughest nuts to crack in the top flight.

So on the whole, six points out of a possible 12 is good going, but some may be disappointed we don’t have a point or two more, considering the performances the Hornets have put in.

There’s been a huge number of positives to take away from these fixtures.

For example, the form of Miguel Britos and Ben Watson. Both have demonstrated they are more than capable of performing at the top level.

Saturday’s defeat to Leicester City was disappointing for many as, despite the fact that Quique Sanchez Flores’ side weren’t at their fluid best, they deserved a point from the game – a view echoed by Charlie Nicholas on Soccer Saturday.

In the end, the Hornets were made to pay for two costly errors from one of the Golden Boys’ star performers in a 15-minute period during the second half.

Heurelho Gomes has been a star since he joined the club in May 2014. Some were sceptical about the signing of a goalkeeper many remembered from his calamitous Tottenham Hotspur days.

During his time at Vicarage Road he has changed the views of the sceptics and has become a firm favourite.

But against Leicester City he made two rare, high profile errors.

The first of which came in the 52nd minute, when he let a tame N’Golo Kante shot slip through his grasp. That goal knocked the wind out of Watford’s sails and it was a horrible mistake from the Brazilian.

But whilst it should have been a routine stop from Gomes in the Watford goal, the blame shouldn’t rest solely on him.

There were at least four players surrounding Kante in the box. Surely one of them could could have nicked the ball away from the midfielder, or even blocked his shot?

Then, a little over ten minutes later, the 34-year-old brought down Jamie Vardy in the penalty area and referee Roger East had no hesitation in pointing to the spot. I’m sure you know the rest and it capped off a torrid spell for Gomes in the second half.

Watford Observer:

But, instead of getting on Gomes’ back, the majority of Watford fans lent their support to the experienced stopper and rightly so.

He was one of the main reasons why Watford gained promotion last season, winning us some games on his own. That excellent form has carried over to this season.

In games against Blackburn Rovers, Bolton Wanderers, Brighton & Hove Albion and Bournemouth, Gomes has single handily won us a point or three and has been responsible for some of the best goalkeeping displays Vicarage Road has seen for some time.

One thing is for certain. I still love Heurelho. And hopefully you do as well.

I’m sure his performance at the King Power Stadium was just a temporary blip and he will back to his imperious best against Manchester United in two weeks’m time.

Bring on the Red Devils!
