Norwich City suffered relegation from the Premier League despite easing to a 4-2 home victory over Watford at Carrow Road.

Quique Sanchez Flores’ side got off to the ideal start after Troy Deeney fired them into the lead after 11 minutes. But two quick goals from Nathan Redmond and Dieumerci Mbokani deservedly gave Norwich the lead.

The Canaries looked like scoring from every attack and made it 3-1 before the break when Craig Cathcart turned a cross into his own net.

Watford pulled one back in the second half with Odion Ighalo’s first league goal since January. But Norwich restored their two-goal lead through Mbokani’s second of the game to clinch a comfortable win.

It was another poor display from the Hornets with the team playing like a side which does not expect their head coach to be at Vicarage Road next season.

For Norwich it was too little too late as Sunderland's home win over Everton confirmed relegation for the Canaries and Newcastle United.

The visitors made one change to the side beaten by Liverpool on Sunday. Allan Nyom returned in place of Sebastian Prodl. Craig Cathcart reverted back to his normal role in the centre of defence.

Watford’s first attack of the match was set up by Almen Abdi but Deeney’s low strike from distance was saved by goalkeeper John Ruddy.

Martin Olsson got into a decent position for the Canaries down the left wing but his cross was too close to Heurelho Gomes.

The Hornets dented Norwich’s hopes of staying up after taking the lead in the 11th minute. Odion Ighalo’s effort was parried by Ruddy and Deeney followed up to tap the ball into the unguarded net.

But the Canaries responded superbly to level the contest within four minutes. Redmond played a one-two with Steven Naismith and drilled a low shot past Gomes which the goalkeeper would have expected to save.

It got even better for the hosts within three minutes as they turned the game on its head to take the lead. Redmond’s strike rebounded off the post and Mbokani fired in the rebound to the delight of the Norwich fans.

The Hornets were struggling to live with Norwich’s pace and intensity which almost resulted in another goal. Redmond’s strike cannoned off the post and Martin Olsson’s effort was tipped over the bar by Gomes.

Norwich did not have to wait long for a third goal when Wes Hoolahan’s cross was turned into his own net by Cathcart.

But the news of a Sunderland goal against Everton somewhat dampened the mood at Carrow Road.

There was still no stopping the onslaught as Norwich nearly added a fourth goal after Naismith’s effort was blocked by Gomes.

The only surprise was Watford made just one substitution for the second half with Nathan Ake brought on for Nyom.

Watford pulled a goal back after 51 minutes when Deeney’s low cross set up Ighalo to fire home from close range.

Flores made his second change when he introduced winger Steven Berghuis in place of Jose Manuel Jurado.

But the Hornets conceded a fourth goal when the excellent Redmond played in Mbokani and the striker cheekily chipped the ball over Gomes.

Watford made their final substitution in the last 20 minutes with Adlene Guedioura replacing Ben Watson.

The visitors put together a decent spell of possession which resulted in an Abdi shot which was straight at Ruddy.

Watford's evening was summed up late on by a Guedioura free-kick which flew hopelessly over the bar.

Most of Norwich's fans stayed behind after the final whistle to support their players despite the disappointment of relegation.

For Watford, it was another game with more questions than answers ahead of the final match of the season against Sunderland on Sunday.
