Watford's hopes of survival boosted after win at Charlton

A late Tamas Priskin strike handed Watford a vital away win and hammered another nail in Charlton's coffin.

The Addicks are almost certain to be relegated but it looked as though the home side were going to win this contest for large spells of the game.

The opener from Don Cowie, his second goal for Watford, was cancelled out by on-loan Tresor Kandol as Charlton went into the break 2-1 to the good.

Substitute Grzegorz Rasiak smashed home a stunning equaliser and then Priskin stabbed his sixth goal in seven goals with six minutes to go for another vital three points for Watford.

Jobi McAnuff, Jack Cork and Tommy Smith were all brought back into the side after being rested at Plymouth.

McAnuff caused a few problems early on and created the first chance when he beat Kelly Youga to burst into the box and cross but it was cut out and cleared.

Charlton fans were appealing for a penalty after six minutes when Lloyd Sam got in behind Jon Harley but the left back recovered in time to make the tackle.

Former Hornets Darren Ward and Matt Spring were starting for Charlton and after being given too much space, Spring dragged a shot wide.

Charlton had a stronger appeal for a spot kick soon after when on-loan forward Tresor Kandol was pushed off the ball by Harley but once more the referee rejected the claims.

Watford were allowing Charlton a bit too much time on the edge of the box and Nicky Bailey fired over.

Charlton enjoyed a spell of possession and they had a great chance after a mistake from both Watford centre backs.

Mike Williamson was caught napping by Sam and he put Deon Burton through, but the former Derby man had not seen the pass and it seemed the danger had passed.

But Adrian Mariappa allowed Burton to beat him to the ball in the box but luckily Lloyd Doyley was able to clear the cross before a Charlton player arrived.

The home side were slightly on top but then Watford scored out of nowhere.

A goal kick from Scott Loach was flicked on by Tamas Priskin to Smith who slipped Don Cowie in to power home.

McAnuff had a long shot go just wide after the goal and then Sam did the same for Charlton.

Then similarly to Watford, the home side scored out of nothing when Mariappa and Doyley got in each others way and allowed Kandol in to round Loach and score.

Charlton almost scored another minutes later when after some excellent play from Therry Racon, Sam crossed for Burton, who got in front of his marker but glanced his header just wide.

Watford were not helping their cause with momentary lapses of concentration and Mike Williamson was caught in possession once more, this time in his box, but Loach saved Sam's shot.

The visitors were on the back-foot and went behind when Spring's corner was headed in by Kandol.

The Leeds striker was in search of his hat-trick and hit the side netting minutes later.

Watford's hopes of a come-back suffered a severe blow when Smith failed to recover from an earlier knock and went off injured with around five minutes of the half to play.

But his replacement almost scored immediate.

Priskin showed good strength to out-muscle Mark Hudson and then slip the ball to Cowie, whose cross was headed towards the top corner by Grzegorz Rasiak but Rob Elliot made an excellent save.

Rasiak maybe should have scored from the resulting corner when McAnuff's cross fell to him five yards out but the angle was tight and he blazed over.

There were four minutes of injury time and deep into it Cowie had a free kick saved by Elliot.

Watford started the half a little bit brighter and five minutes in had a good chance when after good play from Cork, Cowie sent a cross in which Elliot could only parry to the edge of the box.

Priskin and Cowie got in each others way so Priskin tried to go round the defender and appeared to be brought down but the referee rejected the appeals.

Watford's goal in the first half came out of the blue and so did their equaliser.

The Hornets' two widemen had switched sides and McAnuff's cross from deep on the left-hand side was well controlled by Rasiak on the edge of the box and the Poland international swiveled and smashed in.

Mike Williamson was lucky to stay on the pitch in Plymouth and McAnuff was fortunate to not see at least yellow for a lunge on Racon.

Watford were starting to get on top and had a good chance when Harley received the ball in the opposition's box after a one-two with McAnuff but Priskin could not bundle in the full back's cross.

There was a scare for the visitors when Mariappa headed an in-swinging Bailey free kick just wide of his own post.

McAnuff was lively and tried a curling shot from outside the box but it was comfortably saved.

It looked as though Kandol was going to get his hat-trick when Racon put him through but Harley made a near-goal-saving block and the resulting cross was headed over by Bailey.

It looked as though the points would be shared but then a defensive mix-up by Mark Hudson and Danny Butterfield in the corner of their box somehow resulted in Priskin coming away with the ball. The Hungarian was one-on-one with Elliot and the striker lifted the ball over the keeper for what turned out to be the winner.

There were a few shaky moments at either end as the game came to a close, with substitute Zheng Zhi almost creeping a free kick past Loach at his near post with one of the last kicks of the game.

TS certainly gets some crude treatment and not just by players in this division. Chelski's LB gave him a crude chop. Good old Ashley Cole some say - others tell the truth....

Glad to see we took this game seriously and picked a strong team.

A good result at a ground we struggle at.

Hope Tommy is fit for tuesday. Well done Brendan and the boys

Ps. Hear Boy Blunder is involved with 52 acres...heaven help Wycombe no wonder they are no longer runaway leaders of Div 2. Can we sell him the East Stand on an 'as seen' basis?

Great well taken 3 goals...we gifted Charlton theirs but we were on top 2nd half again after Rodgers had able told them to up the performance and the support was excellent.

Hopefully Smithy's injury won't be too bad....

Well that's another win but not the best performance ever. I don't mind at all, and it bodes well for next season (hopefully in the Championship). Can't believe that some Clappers think we might scrape into the play-offs. If that happens, I will personally snog Colni.

Ofcourse we won't but I have noticed we aren't actually that far off the top half but then nor are some of the sides below us!

Just listened to an interview on BBC with BR and he was saying "as I said" every sentence which means I just cannot listen to him. Its a sign of a lack of education or nerves but it really gets on my t**ts.

Sorry had to get that of my chest.

Great day out but nothing on Selhurst Park May 2006!

Can hardly see the screen as I type, great finish from Priskin but for me, Rasiak's goal was the Watford goal of season so far. Argue if you will...

Still buzzing after yesterday. A few months ago a Watford team trailing 2-1 after being ahead would have crumbled, but not this one.

Well done Buck for realising the mistakes at Plymouth. It may be easy to say "Well, it was only Charlton" but last year it was "only Barnsley, only Colchester..." and look how we did then.

Stikers scoring, new signings geliing... it looks good. Staying up is not a foregone conclusion, but we seem to be in the ascendency right now.

Keep it up.

Absolutely nothing to do with all the other posts. Was in a bar yesterday in Javia, Spain watching Sky Sports and avidly following the Charlton v Watford game. When Priskin scored the winner, declared my allegiance to Watford (by shouting yes) and a guy told my Ross Jenkins (our hero from the 80's) drinks in here. Apparently he now sells and fits kitchens for a living.

Hogweed and Hollywood--Yes, Rodgers is still a bit uncertain in his media presence. He can come over as mumbly, repetitious , overly intellectuall. You could not say he is a charismatic individual. It makes me think--how does he come across to the players? Can he inspire and motivate or does he turn them off? But maybe he does not need to make Churchillian speaches or use the hairdryer technique to get his points across. Players who do not understand or do not respond to his low-key , thoughtful approach may be shipped out for those who do (goodbye O'Toole, hello Cork). Coppell and Wenger are succesful managers who do not possess a convincing media image, but they do not seem to care, and just get on with their work. Boothroyd was a bit too keen to try to provide the snappy sound bite in interviews, and to use the media to his personal advantage and look where that got him. Apparantly at the Fans Forum Rodgers was more relaxed , and gave honest humourous and intelligent answers to questions Still a lot of "as I said" though. He will get better at this, as he seems to be getting better at most other aspects of his job.

My word! There is more good feeling around Vicarage Road now than there has been for many, many months and a few people here start to have a pop at Rodgers regarding his intelligence and supposedly tired repetition ... get a life! I'd like to see how you would come across. maybe you miss the Churchillian references, the tiresome outings to watch Rocky 27, and bookish obsessions of a previous manager but I certainly don't. If the players perform, and the players respect, and the players learn... then shove a sock in your whinging little mouths. Bah!

Mellow--it is good to see the manager defended , even when no insult to the manager was intended. For my part I am becoming more and more a Rodgers supporter with (almost) every game, and am already looking forward to next season. I think he is the main reason why those who were hesitating about renewing season tickets probably will in fact do so. But since he sets himself high standards he probably knows he has to do some work on his post-match interview skills.

Roger: Fair enough. But I'm sure I'm not alone in finding the majority of interviews nothing more than dull press releases. How many player/manager interviews are actually unpredictable and interesting? I appreciate that there is a limit to what can be said in public, but most are so cliché-ridden they become pointless. One of the reasons Morinho is so missed by the press, perhaps...

Roger68, St Albans says...
6:55pm Mon 9 Mar 09

mellow--post match interviews! What an interesting topic! Blame hogweed --he started it. Being articulate on t.v. is certainly not the main thing I look for in a manager, and I don't really mind if Rodgers comes across like Frank Spencer or even Homer Simpson (no not him, the cartoon one). He is certainly a better communicator than, say,Kenny Dalgleish was, or all the "Ron Manager" types we used to see on "Match of the Day" But in the modern world of "managerial mind games", often conducted through the media , an ability to smooth talk or charm via the media is an undoubted advantage to a manager. It is probably taught now on post-graduate degrees in football management. As one of the new breed of managers, I expect Rodgers to soon master the art. He has already bought the Mourinho coat. But to some people like Zola or Sousa of QPR it seems to come naturally.
