Watford lose after Cardiff score controversial penalty with last kick of the game

Watford were denied a deserved point after Cardiff scored from a controversial penalty with the final kick of the game.

Tommy Smith returned from injury to score from the spot in the ninth minute against the side that tried to sign him in January.

Smith's goal was soon canceled out by Jay Bothroyd and it looked as though the Hornets were about to pick up a point against promotion-chasers Cardiff.

But after the three minutes of injury time had already passed, Ross Jenkins was adjudged to have handled on the line and Ross McCormack scored from the spot.

It is the second time in two games that Watford have conceded penalties deep into time added on.

Watford started brightly and were passing the ball well but it was a tricky run in the ninth minute by Jobi McAnuff, from inside his own half, which ended up in the former Cardiff man being brought down in the box.

Smith, playing for the first time since Kelly Youga forced him off through injury against Charlton, coolly slotted the ball past Stuart Taylor into the 'keeper's bottom left to make it 1-0.

Both sides were trying to play attractive football and Cardiff had a couple of chances soon after the opener.

After Paul Parry had failed to get any power on Chris Burke's cross, Jay Bothroyd's neat flick put Joe Ledley in but the Welshman's shot to the near post was easily saved by Scott Loach.

There was a doubt over whether Bothroyd would be fit to play but the former Coventry man equalised in the 15th minute.

Burke's cross was not cleared and the ball fell to Bothroyd, who volleyed into the bottom corner.

Tamas Priskin was causing problems and Cardiff's Roger Johnson needed to make an excellent diving challenge to stop the striker from shooting.

The Hungarian then beat Gabor Gyepes out right before smashing in a dangerous cross which Johnson just beat Smith to in the six yard box.

Ledley looked lively in the middle of the park and again a one-two with Bothroyd created another chance for Cardiff, but Jenkins' slide tackle stopped Ross McCormack from shooting.

The Scottish striker had another chance moments later when Kevin McNaughton's free kick was not cleared and McCormack flashed a volley wide of the near post.

The Cardiff striker saw another effort go wide when he failed to make decent contact on Tony Capaldi's cross.

Watford were looking to break when possible and another McAnuff run resulted in Priskin being brought down 20 yards out but Don Cowie's low free kick went comfortably wide.

After Bothroyd was brought down 20 yards out, McCormack hit a free kick into the wall.

But the dangerous Ledley should have scored shortly before half time when he was not tracked into the box by Ross Jenkins.

From eight yards out and with the goal at his mercy Ledley decided to try and pass to Johnson rather than shoot and Doyley cut out the pass.

Loach held a curling McCormack shot and Cowie fired a half volley over the bar before the break but the sides went in at one a piece.

McAnuff again started the half well and would have been through on goal had McNaughton not brought him down.

However, Cowie's free kick was cleared and Cardiff broke quickly but McCormack headed wide from eight yards out.

Former Wycombe defender Johnson had a header saved by Loach moments later as Cardiff started the second half as they finish the first; on top.

The game was a bit scrappy for a while and the Cardiff fans were becoming slightly restless as their side kept misplacing their passes.

Watford came back into the game more but were unable to create any chances.

It looked as though McCormack was set to shoot from 12 yards after Bothroyd beat Williamson in the air but the striker's touch was heavy and Mariappa cleared the ball.

Similarly, a neat interchange between McAnuff, Cork and Jenkins saw McNaughton just clear before Jenkins was about to shoot.

The game opened up around the hour mark and Watford had a quick break following a challenge from Cork but Smith's cross was cut out by the 'keeper.

A deflected Peter Whittingham shot led to a Cardiff corner, which although it was cleared, resulted in Johnson just heading wide a Burke cross.

Watford enjoyed a spell of possession in Cardiff's half but McAnuff's cross would not fall to Priskin.

Watford were on top in the later stages of the game and Cardiff were fortunate that a Smith cross was scuffed by a home defender into their keeper's arms and not to the feet of the nearby Priskin.

Some patient build-up from Watford then saw Cork head a Mariappa cross wide with two minutes to go.

The visiting side remained in charge in injury time but then Cardiff were given a penalty and scored with the last kick of the game.

City won a corner after Loach made an excellent save from a long-range effort by McCormack.

Johnson jumped highest at the resulting corner and his header was blocked on the line by a diving Jenkins but the referee adjudged the youngster had used his arm and pointed to the spot.

As on Saturday when Jon Harley was penalised, there was controversy but after consulting with his linesman, Andy Hall awarded the spot kick and McCormack dispatched calmly.

Cardiff: Taylor; McNaughton Gyepes, Johnson, Capaldi; Burke (Chopra 74), Ledley, McPhail, Parry (Whittingham 45); Bothroyd, McCormack. Subs: Rae, Johnson, Kennedy.

Listened on the radio, sounds like we were as good value for a point. Seen the incident on Sky just now, not really sure why Jenkins didn't see it over the line as was going well wide. Confident we'll get another 2 or 3 wins but we'll do it the hard way as usual no doubt!

B0LL0CKS!!We should stay safe but more poor rulings like this and it will keep us looking over our . The players must be gutted to have this happen for the second time in a week. Feel very, very sorry for the fans that went to the third world tonight as well. These next two away games are very important and hopefully the players wont forget how well they have been playing for the last 7 weeks. I have everything crossed for the rest of the season! I may have to get a colostomy bag!

Don't believe it!

Lost points to a late penalty again.

Ball was going wide and he might have being trying to shield it but just hit the top of his arm...ref gave it despite having players in front of him.

No red card either which you expect for handball on the line.

Even David Jones (who seems a fair honest guy and said we played well etc) has said had the ref changed his mind by talking to the lino the bloke might have not got out alive!

I was at the game behind the goal.this is my views:

1. We had already played 3 minutes of stoppage time before the build up to the corner.(93:20)
2. The ref had no chance of seeing the incident as there was nearly 18 players in the box.No x-rays vision Mr Ref!
3. If the linesman thought it was a penalty he would of stood with his flag accross his chest indicating a penalty..he didnt and just poitned to the corner flag for a corner.
4. A ref cant blow for a penalty and hope his assistant saw it,if the linesman didnt flag then he has no reason to blow,he listen to the Cardiff appeals!
5. The linesman was seen shacking his head and even walk away, then the ref awarded a penalty to everybodys amusement.

If the linesman is the only official to have the only CLEAR view why hasnt the ref listened,as it was obvious the linesman didnt think it was a penalty as he indicated a corner!!

THE REF MADE A BALLS UP,BLEW FOR NOTHING AND WAS BULLIED BY THE AWAY FANS AND PLAYERS.FACT!

The referee must have felt that the ball was going wide in which case no red card would be correct.....

All that hard work yet again undone by a penalty.

I haven't seen the incident but after reading the many protests about the Wednesday incident, I saw that on TV and can understand why the ref changed his mind. From the body language I think it was one of the few decisions the ref got right.
So it seems it was down to poor judgement by John Harley.

On reading about yesterdays penalty, why did RJ dive if ball was going wide? didn't he know where post was?

The game is over and we lost, does it matter? In a sense yes and in another way no. We went to Cardiff played well, gave as good as we got and were unlucky. We will finish mid table with a team that will improve and challenge for honours next year under the leadership of a good manager who will get even better.

Brendan lacks one quality that Aidy had...arrogance....h
e listens and will be one of the best managers we have ever had.

Don't cry over spilt milk look forward to a bright future. This time last year the opposite was true

I think that refs should give a post match interview to explain these controversial issues decissions, and if it is the lino that has given it then supporters should be told.

Some one from Watford has pi**ed of the FA somewhere down the line.

Does anybody know how many pens we have conceeded this season ?

Hexham Hornet says...
9:35am Thu 19 Mar 09

If the penalty was a correct decision for handball on the line why was RJ not cautioned or sent off. Handball is given for intentionally handling the ball. If it was a case of the ball hitting the hand then it is not a free-kick, no matter on which part of the pitch it happened. If it was intentional the ref would have had to send RJ off. Is it a case of a ref bottling things and giving a decision in favour of baying home fans?

The answer to Hexham's final comment is yes. I was there, and he was a homer. From the TV replay the angle shown was the same as the refs...you couldn't see it. The linesman said no, and we were over time. If there is doubt you don't give it. Very dissappointing. However we nearly got a point at one of the top 6 with Loachy not busy. We are doing something right.

I want to know why Watford are being singled out to have all the CR*p referee's this season those that don't fall that low are exceptionally poor, what is going on, we get shafted by a homer last night and an away day merchant on Saturday from memory that's now 6 points that have been lost by ridiculous referee's this season maybe more, when are the FL going to do something to raise the standard of referee's and ensure they carry out the law's of the game, the ref can only allow or give a penalty if he or the linesman see it, the lino said no and the ref couldn't possibly see through that many players and more to the point very little appeal from the Cardiff players, of course the fans will cheat a penalty if they can, I used to have a sly look on the players shirts if I had any doubts, still a very poor decision.

WE should be talking about another excellent performance , against a big tough side ...another point towards safety. Instead it the referee that gets the attention.Overall his performance led me to believe he'd come from Wales.McAnuff in particular was hacked down on numerous occasions( he frightened the life out of them !) and only once did the ref caution the offender. Not much between the sides BUT you always felt the referee would give them a decision to win the game. Three minutes stoppage time turned to four when the penalty was given. I had a great view of it ....NO WAY a pen..off the top of the chest . The referee didn't get a clear view at all. Linesman said NO . Eventually the ref went to the linesman and ( according to our players) said NO penalty to him ..BUT he still gave it. Spoke to our guys after the game , and Brendan . They were gutted and fuming."Tier two football being refereed by tier 7 officials" was one comment. The shirt proves the ball hit the chest. The players were not happy with the referees overall performance at all, citing various incidents including elbowing which went unpunished. I hope the players can keep their confidence up...they are playing well , but incompetant officials have robbed them of the rewards they deserve. The standard of refereeing this year ( and last ) has been appalling . Why don't we get any "homer" referees at the Vic .Ignore what's been said on Sky by CArdiffs manager...it was definently NO penalty , and a shocking decision.Keep the faith .. they say everything evens out , so we must be in for a hell of a season next year.

Haven't seen last nights but everyone seems to agree it was a compete farce of a decision. So 4 points lost to outrageous refereeing decisions in as many days.

I repeat, having these incompetent officials changing the cousre of games when so much is a stake is not acceptable. The authorities MUST do something.

Maybe it's up to us as fans to make something happen here???

I sort of agree with Chris in that we should let it go and rejoice in the way we are progressing, but if we do end up going down because of lost points (I don't think we will), what is the cost?

As for saturday's pen Chris, watch it again...the Wednesday lad took a dive! Clear as day on the Big league 2 pictures.

Can there be a club who have suffered more in a season from really bad decisions not just odd mistakes than us?
How many points have they cost us - these referees are getting away with it week after week, Attwell should of served a long suspension but seems to have been promoted!

Lucky we are a mid table team. If we had lost so many points Really chasing promotion or Badly struggling we would really think the FA had it in for us.

As it is, maybe we will use up all next years bad decisions as well and have a great year. G T always used to say, "these things balance out"

Yes, I was there at Cardiff. What's more I was standing only about 10 yards away from Jenkins when the penalty was given, with a perfect view of the incident. And I can say that categorically the ball hit his chest - no question about it. If it did hit his arm subsequently, then it could only have grazed it as it cannoned off his chest and it certainly was not intentional (hand-ball has to be intentional - it's the only offence that has to be). I was absolutely stunned when the referee gave it as he could not have seen it clearly enough (TV replays show he had a side-on view of Jenkins only). What's more, there was no need for him to have touched it anyway as it was going out for a goalkick, so the worst it should have been was another corner. The ironic thing is that the people who had the clearest view of the incident were the 300 visiting supporters, which is why we went absolutely ballistic (though to their credit, they behaved themselves). All in all, the referee made a bad, bad mistake, compounded by the fact that the assistant claimed not to have seen it, so that he didn't have a reason to change his mind.
He had been a little too trigger-happy with his whistle all evening, not allowing any real physical contact and I think he just blew without thinking about it.
Still, the assessor thought it wasn't a penalty, so I suspect we won't be seeing Mr Hall officiating for the next few weeks...
