Hornets survive late scare to beat Doncaster 2-1

Watford took another step towards Championship survival by holding on for a 2-1 win away to fellow strugglers Doncaster Rovers.

The Hornets were two up within 20 minutes thanks to an own goal and Don Cowie's third for the club.

The visitors had a late scare when substitute James Hayter scored with five minutes to go but Watford held on for the three points.

Scott Loach was excellent throughout and was forced to deny Doncaster a superb opener in the third minute when he parried away a vicious Martin Woods half-volley from 25 yards.

The Watford keeper then just beat Paul Heffernan to a through ball minutes later but the striker was adjudged to be marginally offside.

Doncaster were controlling possession in the early stages as Watford struggled to get their passing game going.

In the opening ten minutes the Hornets could only manage an Adrian Mariappa cross which was comfortably cut out by veteran keeper Neil Sullivan.

In the 12th minute though Watford scored from their first meaningful attack when Tommy Smith put Tamas Priskin in and, after a few stepovers, the Hungarian's pull-back was turned into his own goal by defender Sam Hird.

Doncaster started with a 3-5-2 formation and Mariappa again got forward to send in a perfect cross for Priskin but his glancing header was somehow tipped wide by Sullivan.

The visitors were on top by now and Mariappa was causing problems every time he went forward.

It was the fullback's burst into the box which saw him chip in another cross and, this time, Don Cowie looped a header over Sullivan for the Hornets second.

Doncaster had a penalty claim turned down soon after when Loach failed to collect a ball he told Ross Jenkins to leave and Paul Heffernan dived over the keeper's trailing arm.

Watford were pressing well which was frustrating the home fans and Rovers boss Sean O'Driscoll made a tactical change as early as the 32nd minute by bringing on forward Dean Shiels for defender Hird.

It was Watford who had the next half-chance though with Jenkins volleying over from 20 yards.

The home fans were becoming increasingly angry with Priskin, as the striker kept going down too easily.

In one instance Priskin showed exceptional skill by the corner flag to work his way into the box but instead of shooting, the Hungarian went down.

Watford made their own early substitution by bring on Doncaster-born Danny Rose for Cowie on 35 minutes.

Rovers had a spell of attacking as the half came to a close and Shields in particular was causing problems.

After the forward had a shot saved, Doncaster then had their best opportunity of the half.

Captain Richie Wellens had a close-range shot saved by Loach and then the rebound by Mark Wilson was blocked by Mariappa and eventually cleared.

On-loan midfielder Rose's first impact in the yellow of Watford came as he ran from his own half and sent in a teasing cross which no one could quite reach.

As the half came to a close, Shiels had a dangerous cross cut out by Jenkins and then the substitute almost grabbed a goal back in injury time with a curling effort that just went wide.

It was Shiels who had the first chance of the second half as he came inside Lloyd Doyley and struck a shot towards the near post but Loach saved with ease.

Rose grew up in Doncaster and would have liked to have seen more of the ball on his debut but when he did he looked lively.

Rodgers made his second substitution of the game in the 54th minute by bringing on Will Hoskins for Priskin and the former Rotherham man should have scored almost immediate.

A defensive mix-up saw Hoskins through one-on-one but the striker mis-hit his effort well wide from eight yards.

Doncaster almost made him pay moments later when the lively Shiels was put in but Loach came out and made a superb save low down. Both sides then went close with free kicks.

First Smith laid the ball to Mcanuff and the winger fired in a ferocious strike which was going in until it was blocked by the diving Mills.

And then Woods struck a free kick just wide of the post from 25 yards.

Doncaster's injury-ridden squad was boosted with the addition of loan signing Kazenga Lua-Lua last week.

The Newcastle youngster is the brother of former Portsmouth striker Lomana Lua-Lua and he made an immediate impact by turning an hitting a shot from 30 yards but it was saved by Loach.

Woods then saw another free kick just go wide of the upright, although his curling effort was unlikely to test Loach.

Doncaster had Watford camped in their half with more than 20 minutes to go but each time they attacked the Hornets scrambled the ball clear.

The visitors then had a couple of chances to add to their two goals themselves.

First Rose was sent down the left wing and the 18-year-old's cross found Hoskins but the striker's touch was poor and the defender cleared.

And then Mcanuff cut in on to his left foot and stuck a rising effort which was parried over by Sullivan.

After a moment of early hesitation, Loach did not put a foot wrong from then on and did well to hold on to a powerful John Spicer shot.

But the 20-year-old could do nothing about Doncaster's goal.

Substitute James Hayter, on the corner of the box, cut in on to his left foot and curled his shot inside the far post to make it 2-1 with five minutes to go.

Adam Lockwood saw a shot go well over and Jenkins had a half volley blocked in quick succession.

Watford could have had further chances to attack but each time they went to the corner to time waste. But it paid off in the end and they secured the valuable three points.

Well done Buck and the lads. Hope Cowie and Rose will be ok. Both very good signings along with Williamson. One more win should do it. Roll on next season!

Would be looking forward to next season. But friends at Reading tell me that its generally accepted there that Coppell will be moving on at the end of the season with Rodgers taking over. Hope not.

We looked confident today, like we feel we can win every game. Marriappa was excellent and Mike Williamson is looking an excellent buy each time I see him.

Scott's kicking is getting better and I am very impressed with Danny Rose; he's got an eye for a good pass in him, reminds me a little of Mcnamee at his best.

We need to finish off teams though, 1-2 flattered Rovers a bit. I wish Hoskins would believe in himself...missed a sitter that he put wide of the post.

All in all we look like we know what we're doing. Strong finish now to the end of the season and let's see what we can do next year.

Lutther. Rodgers not going to Reading. If Coppell does go which two good friends who are Reading fans say wont they wouldnt give a manager with 20 league games experience the job. Simple as. HOOF well done sir. Wild bet for that GN winner if you really did. And if so a very good day indeed. If Chalfont St Peter had beaten Glossop in the FA vase semi that would have made mine. Did not happen though! Bowlocks.

Decent win again and one more should do it really.

Sounds like the 3 that went off have knocks rather than anything serious and those who came on sounded like they did fine.

Good away support in terms of numbers btw.

A good day out, nice stadium and friendly locals. Good play on the pitch and we deserved the win but made it a bit nervous in the last 20 by sitting back a bit. Rose worked hard and made some good runs, but as pfw said, like Mcnamee, the final ball was just not quite good enough. Not complaining though, if he keeps working like that he will create openings. Lualua seemed to be determined to kick him off the park though and was lucky not to get a 2nd yellow.

Interesting to see what happens at Reading, but it wont involve us. Coppell will stay.

As for our team a good solid result to be followed by a few more before the season ends. The close season will be interesting as the balance is achieved between the team and the finances but with the current board I am sure a good balance for WFC will be achieved.

Bring on Soton and three more points.

By the time Southampton arrive on Tuesday night they will know whether or not they have been deducted 10 points. If they have, will they be despondent and give up, or will they be a wounded tiger? If not, will they feel they still have something to fight for? Will they in fact even turn up, if they are uncertain about paying players wages or meeting their own matchday expenses? An odd situation for Watford to be in , and even more so for Rodgers for whom every match seems to represent a new experience. I wonder if he thought that management would be like this? This has been an odd season all round, but is ending far better than seemed likely in December.

So good that the scum won they will now have recent memories of success in a meaningless tournament to take with them to the conference. Now if only they could get all that support into the kennel and we think our ground is bad.

Bye bye scum and minty

well done the orns, fiver to win on the boys covered my national losses too - double bonus! Doubt Reading would go for Rogers and rumours of Coppell going are like rumours of Fergy leaving old Trafford - come up every season and don't come to much. Think Rogers is on the right track, if he's got any sense he'll re-group in the summer and use some of the wise heads around him (Lampard snr, GT) to build more talent and flexibility into the squad and hopefully dump off more of the dross he's inherited from AB (e.g. ellignton). Unlike some here, I thought AB did an OK job, but one thing I never rated was his transfer record, buck seems a lot more switched on from evidence so far (Mike is worlds away from the class of defender we've been bringing in over the last xx years)

As Luton have won the paint trophy are they allowed to have an emblem placed on their shirts to represent it?

I was thinking a can of paint, maybe a roller or brushes or the dulux dog?

I think they only wanted to win it so they could get the sponsors to give them free paint to do up their awful ground! How else could they afford it after all?

Go to Page 21 of the Sun newspaper today. It's say's Dennis Wise could soon be back in management with Watford. It goes on to say the current boardroom want him. Please tell me this is not true.

Chris the Vic, The Vic says...
4:26pm Mon 6 Apr 09

Why on earth would we want Dennis Wise.

As a full time employee I doubt we could afford him.

As a board member what could he do for us that GT who knows how we tick cant provide.

To replace Brendan,hardly.

It doesn't really make any sense and these days most of the management decisions are eminently sensible.

So Belgian methinks it isnt true but with articles in the tabloids truth isnt a major factor.

Roger68, St Albans says...
4:39pm Mon 6 Apr 09

Belgian--you made a mistake in the first line of your posting. You called the Sun a "newspaper". This is what we in the English department at Bash Street School call "an oxymoron" that is a statement which contradicts itself. The Sun is not a newspaper and nothing in it is either news or truth. It follows that Rodgers is not leaving Watford , and even if he did, then Wise (is that another oxymoron?) would never be the next Watford manager. He is too expensive, too short, too bad at football management and would want to appoint all his football mates ( such as Wilkins or Jones) to share in his good fortune if he was ever lucky enough to get another job in football, or of anyone was foolish enough to offer him one. The Russos are too canny to pay any attention to this agent driven nonsense and Rodgers is too level headed to let it upset him. If Wise ever aspired to get involved at Watford, that moment has passed.

Needs to be reviewed and sharpish to quell such rumours that will surely happen.
