But substitute Rose could still have earned victory at death

Watford will have to wait until Saturday at least for the win they may need to make sure of their Championship safety after a dramatic finale saw Southampton grab a last gasp 2-2 draw at Vicarage Road tonight.

The point, in truth, was not what the visitors were after to ease their increasingly dire predicament near the basement, but it looked like a decent performance from the away side would go unrewarded when Tamas Priskin headed the Hornets 2-1 in front after the break.

However, centre-half Jan-Paul Saeijs had other ideas and he followed up the evening’s opening goal with a stunning 30-yard free-kick at the death to earn the Saints a point.

But if that wasn’t enough, Hornets substitute Danny Rose then conspired to somehow miss the proverbial sitter to put his side on the 53 points tally that is thought certain to be enough to remain in the division.

After that finale, it was almost forgotten that Watford’s on-loan winger Aleksandrs Cauna had celebrated his first start with his first goal to cancel out Saeijs’ opener.

Brendan Rodgers made just the one change following Saturday’s 2-1 win at Doncaster Rovers, with Cauna making his full Hornets debut at the expense of the injured Don Cowie.

After a low-key opening, with the visitors deploying something akin to a 4-1-4-1 formation, Watford gradually began to up the ante after the five-minute mark. But it was the visitors who had the first opening in the 11th minute when, after winning the first corner of the game, Chris Perry hooked the ball back into the six-yard box from tight to the by-line and Ross Jenkins did very well to clear under pressure from Jason Euell.

This sparked an immediate response from the home side, with a good run from Jobi McAnuff down the right flank resulting in a corner, which Mike Williamson turned back into the area, but Jack Cork knocked the ball harmlessly wide.

A third corner in quick succession followed, but this one left the Hornets stunned.

Ryan Smith’s in-swinging left-footed set-piece from the right was met by the unmarked towering presence of centre-half Saeijs, who planted a routine header down and to the left of the static but helpless Scott Loach to hand the beleaguered Saints a shock 1-0 advantage in the 13th minute.

But nine minutes later a young Latvian was to mark his full debut in memorable fashion.

A quick Lloyd Doyley throw on the right found Priskin close to the by-line, and he laid the ball back into the left side of the area where Cauna struck a first-time left-footed shot that certainly caught keeper Kelvin Davis unaware as it went through him at the near post to make it 1-1.

Southampton’s response came in the shape of low 25-yard drive from Andrew Surman that Loach was comfortably behind, and then a fine reverse pass from Ryan Smith threatened to release Euell inside the area, but a combination of Doyley and then Jay DeMerit averted any danger.

The Saints continued to look to take the game to the home side, although Cauna again showed a glimpse of his ability with a superb 40-yard ball from tight to the left touchline down the inside left channel, but, unfortunately for the Hornets, it found Priskin in an offside position.

Watford’s next opportunity came in the 35th minute when a deep McAnuff corner from the right was headed back across the area by Williamson, but he was unable to pick out anyone in a yellow shirt.

However, the visitors continued to offer a threat from set-pieces and two minutes later Perry met a deep Lloyd James free-kick with a good angled downward header and Loach did well to get down and push the ball around his near post.

The Saints forced two more corners as the half drew to a close, but they were unable to capitalise on these as the opening period ended all-square.

Watford started the second half on the front foot, but it was the visitors who threatened first when Surman shot straight at Loach from distance.

However, the Hornets had a chance of their own soon after when Priskin capitalised on a lapse from Saeijs to open up a shooting opportunity on the left side of the area, but he snatched his shot badly wide of the near post.

An even better opening fell Watford’s way in the 50th minute when a ball forward was flicked inside by Priskin to Tommy Smith who was allowed to continue, despite looking suspiciously offside, but he dragged his low angled effort wide of the far post.

Ryan Smith became the first player to be booked soon after for a foul on Cauna, but on 56 minutes the Hornets’ scorer became the first player of the evening to make way and was replaced by Rose.

It was the visitors though, who continued to ask more of the attacking questions, and in the 58th minute DeMerit had to be alert at the back post to prevent Euell from getting in a clear header from a deep James cross.

However, Watford came within inches of regaining the lead in the 62nd minute. A quickly-taken Cork free-kick found Rose tight to the left touchline and he accelerated into the area and towards the by-line before pinging in a low cross which struck a Saints defender and fell for McAnuff, with his back to goal. McAnuff though, did very well to flick the ball back over his shoulder, only to see his attempt headed off the line by Rudi Skacel.

Mark Wotte decided to make his first change soon after, with Marek Saganowski coming on for Bradley Wright-Phillips, and one of the Polish international’s first acts was to flick the ball through to Euell in space in the area, but he fired straight at Loach. It was to prove a costly miss.

Watford won their seventh corner of the night in the 66th minute which McAnuff pulled back towards the edge of the area to Williamson in space, and he headed on for the equally poorly unmarked Priskin to fire a bullet header inside Davis’ near post for his 13th of the season to make it 2-1.

McAnuff then thought he should have had a penalty after being pulled back by Skacel, but referee Clive Penton decided the offence had started outside the area, awarded a free-kick and let the Saints left-back off with a caution.

Adam Lallana came on for Paul Wotton with 12 minutes remaining, and the Saints could have been back in it soon after when the overlapping Skacel was found on the left side of the area and Loach did very well to push his near post effort behind.

But Watford really should have had the game won as the game entered the final ten minutes. Breaking four on two, Tommy Smith found Priskin in space to his right, but the Hungarian striker’s first touch was terrible and, although he was able to get in a shot, Davis saved.

From the resultant corner though, Williamson got in a fine downward header that looked destined to trouble the Saints keeper until Lallana stuck out a boot to divert the ball over his own bar.

Both sides made changes with two minutes to go – Zotan Liptak replacing Euell, while Andrei Stepanov came on for Priskin to make his Hornets’ debut – but there was still time for one last twist in the tale.

Southampton were awarded what looked a dubious free-kick at least 30 yards out and Saeijs stepped up to curl a magnificent right-footed effort past the outstretched Loach to send the 2,000 Saints fans into delirium.

But their celebrations should have ended as quickly as they had begun, because after McAnuff had been clattered into on the right, Tommy Smith got to the by-line and squared to give Rose what appeared to be the most straightforward of finishes, but he inexplicably missed the ball completely.

There were then fears that lightening might strike twice when DeMerit was penalised for a foul near the edge of his area, but this time Surman took the set-piece and curled it over the top. It was the last act of a pulsating finale that ended with honours even.

How the hell did Rose miss at the death?

Best free-kick you'll see for a while, cost me 60 quid the git!

It was an exciting evenly contested game where neither team deserved to finish pointless.

However, neither team were very good and whilst Rose missed a sitter, Priskin should have had another, he should also have passed to Tommy S instead of blasting the ball at the keeper on another occasion, McAnuff tried to be too clever with another opportunity etc.

Tommy Smith was on the pitch for 70 minutes before he came alive, did Ross get in a tackle, did Jack succeed with two passes in succession, the centre backs lost more headers in this match than the previous four. Jay looked at his worst and Mike W had easily his worst game for us and will want to forget their first goal, Scott needs to practice getting to crosses.

Mariappa, Cauna were both Ok. LLoyd played better than nine of his team mates and jobi put in a good performance.

Overall it looked like the team think were safe and have little to play for, Soton seemed to pass and harrass better for much of the game, they scored a wonder goal but when we turned it up we looked more dangerous but this game is best forgotten and between now and Saturday Brendan needs to kick more than a few up their backsides.

We missed Lee Williamson and if we now have a better dressing room, with better spirit, and more honest players, the team needs to stand up and be counted. Yesterday for much of the game, especially the first half, the effort did not equal what we have come to expect.

I agree Chris the Vic, not wishing to knock them after their efforts in recent weeks but I too felt the players possibly thought they were safe and that maybe even that Southampton would be a push over.

Having said that, yes a few chances were missed but chances were made so maybe they were just a little tired.

Either way lets hope for a good win against Barnsley at the weekend!

1st half we didn't seem as willing to get stuck in and control the game like Southampton were and maybe lucky to go in at 1-1.

Disappointing marking from the corner (maybe they will say the same for Priskin's goal) but Cauna's goal was decent.

Both sides had lots of decent chances 2nd half and there isn't much you can do to stop a free kick like that really!

No idea what Rose was doing though in the final seconds..? Did he think somebody was behind him?

I thought our right hand side (and Doyley) did well too and DeMerit had one of his bad night's I guess!

Not the best of performances from some of our key players like Cork,Smith and Priskin (maybe had a knock) but a point is not too bad if we win on Saturday.

Obivously the winning chance would fall to the youngster, obviously he would miss and obviously the fans will get on his back about it. I remeber the prem season, when Henderson couldn't finish with 6 yards nearly every game. The lad won't forget the error for a long time, so I hope he doesn't get pillioried for it. Maybe yes there was some complacency. Hopefully BR will kick some **** and gee them up. Don't forget too, that they heard just before the match that there would be no immediate deduction of points, so from the prospect of having no hopes on Saturday against Charlton, they were gee'd up that there might still be a chance, and that really would have givven them a boost. Two points dropped? probably given the rcent improvements, but as long as we are picking up a point a game, we will be safe. I think we have at least two more wins to come in the run in anyway,

Not our best game by far, was saying with a couple of mates I'd settle for a draw. That free kick was stunning! Thought our defence looked a bit shakey, and didnt think Cork or Jenkins got into the game enough, maybe playing to many games? Remember O'Toole last season. Still Can believe Priskin missed those two good chances. My feelings are 2 points dropped.
Time for my Favourite Gripe! Referee's. I thought last nights ref bottled that penalty decision. McAnuff was in a goal scoring situation, and was pulled down in the box. The letter of the law says that its a penalty, the law also says the offending player should see a red card!! When oh God When are we going to get a ref with a grasp of the rules!! was looking through last night at games where cr@p reffing has cost us. From the games I've been to, Reading's Ghost goal, the "handball" at Cardiff, the penalty against Sheff Weds, last night non-penalty, and I'm sure those regular season ticket holders who go week in week out could quote more!! Rediculous! Bring On Barnsley, and 3 more points and guaranteed safety. :0)

Yet again denied another blatent penalty. The Lino was waving like a demented idiot then realised that in was in the box and moved his position back towards the halfway line. Once again another bottle job from an incompetent ref, why was quite sure that the tackle was about 1mm outside the box.
We are safe so I dont think that it made any difference.

Poor positioning from Loach for the free kick.

Cauna looks good, and had Priskin not been so greedy the game would have been done and dusted.

Difficult to comment on last night's game really but..should have won it, Southampton weren't nearly as bad as their position suggests, stunning free kick, crap ref, no central midfield whatsoever, Priskin a bit greedy, how did Rose miss, how fast is Rose? Hopefully a better game on Saturday.

How did Danny Rose miss that sitter?!? Did he think someone was behind him? But even so, he was in front of goal! Why dummy it? Why miss it? Why oh why oh why!

I hope he doesn't get too much stick for it as he looks very good indeed, very very quick, skilfull, able to cross (just about).

Average display last night which, i agree, if it had been earlier in the season would have resulted in a loss. So a draw is a good thing.

Did feel like we weren't in it at all. The first half hour was shockingly bad. Only really came alive towards the end.

Here's to Barnsley and a win.

HertsPeter says...
10:10am Wed 8 Apr 09

Frustrating, entertaining, and in view of our position a point gained in that it's edged us closer to definite survival. Famous last words but I can't see seven teams overtaking us to leave us in the bottom three. A win over Barnsley could even make us safe if other results go our way.

I thought it was a bad foul to give away for their free kick, but Soton were also guilty of some hospitable defending, notably switching off completely at the throw-in that led to our first (well done Doyley Priskin and Cauna), and leaving Priskin completely alone for the second.

Yes, Rose's miss was an almighty ricket - but the way the ball bobbles on our so-called 'pitch' perhaps that was a factor?

Some harsh comment here!

I thought Southampton came and played like their lives depended on it and fair play to them.

Maybe they caught us unawares but we had an off night, so to get a point was a good result.

Yes lots of chances either way, probably we had the better ones and probably should have won, but that would have been harsh on Southampton.

As for referees, I give up. The League need to do something as it is enough to drive people away.

As for the pitch, I have said before it is seriously hindering our style of play.

We either need to employ far better pitch technology (what about those lights that make the grass grow) or get rid of the egg chasers.

Paradise Watford says...
11:16am Wed 8 Apr 09

Re the pitch, what happened to that thing they did years ago where they basically inserted strips of plastic into the pitch that acted like fake grass.

I seem to remember that was at a time we had had truly awful pitches especially over the winter but the season after it faired quite well with this stuff in it.

12:09pm Wed 8 Apr 09

Of the three players now at Sheff Utd mentioned by Hoof Mike Williamson is better than Bromby; we had to sell Henderson because we needed the money; I haven't the faintest idea why O'Toole went on loan - he can score goals from midfield and therefore I can only assume he didn't get on with BR. Chris the Vic mentioned Lee Wiilamson. Sadly LW really had no future with us and so it was fair for him to go to Preston on loan. Incidentally, does anyone know when AB is going to get another job as a manager? Ever?

Well, everyone seems to agree that we were not at our best on Tuesday night, and that this was true of all departments. The defence looked shaky at set pieces, the midfield did not get going and the strikers were better at making chances than taking them. Priskin did not look fully fit and Smith took a long time to get involved. We seemed to miss the energy of Cowie in midfield and getting forward. But is it fair to ask two teenagers (Cork and Jenkins)to play so many games at such an intensive pace, and are they getting a bit jaded? However it was encouraging to see the pace and skill of Cauna and Rose, even if the latter did miss that last-minute opporunity --though to be fair Smith did seem to be going for goal, not crossing, and the ball was struck too hard for Rose to reach. This 4 game patch was always going to be hard work. Thank goodness we won the first one.One win or just two points, from the next two games is all we want.

Two blatant penalties (McAnuff and Williamson) and what should have been a sending off aside, it was an entertaining game, where neither team seemed to be interesting in the part of the pitch known as centre midfield.

In Cauna I think BR has a real gem on his hands. Technically adept, quick and with a pretty decent shot on him. Made sense to sub him for Rose, and will be interesting to see if we get the Spurs loanee for an entire season next year. If we do I can see an attacking force of Priskin, Smith, McAnuff, Cowie, Cauna and Rose causing real damage to a great many defences. Im almost tempted to back us for promotion.

Or am I getting just a tad carried away?

Mind you, Boofers was as mad as a bucket of frogs and was also a bit deluded.

Brendan and Reading

You all read that Fergie will retire and that Ronaldo is off to Real. Both are inevitable but despite rumours neither have gone.

Well believe me Coppell at the end of every season looks at what he has achieved and gets very worked up about whether he should do the honourable thing. Then common sense takes over and John majedski tells him how much he is wanted and the contract continues to be honoured.

Coppell is great for Reading and Reading is great for Coppell. Rumours will abound but Coppell will stay where he is and Brendan will be looking to build a team that he wants and that will make me very happy.

I heard the Dennis Wise to Watford rumour, but heard that BR was going to be given the push to make way for him rather than him being off to Reading.

Personally I think its all rubbish, BR has shown a lot of positive qualities coming to WFC including putting up with having been lied to about the clubs financial situation and he has gotten on and done a very good job in the circumstances. We've gone from being almost certs for relegation to being basically safe with six games to go. Why would the club want to get rid of him?

I don't rate DW and him comning to WFC would be a step backwards.

With the exception of, possibly, the fallout with JJ O'Toole and his team selection for Plymouth I cannot think of much that he has done that is wrong.

11:10am Thu 9 Apr 09

Given the efforts to return our club to decency, there is no way BR will get the push. Whether he was mislead into taking the job in respect of the finances, that is another matter which the Board are having to cope with. If the right offer came along with better short term prospects would you blame him for being tempted? Yes, he seems a good appointment, but I suspect he was pretty p****d off with us when he found out what we as fans, our new Board and he as our new manager found out to be the truth. The Board are in a tough position which they inherited as I suspect Brendan will need to sell to survive. Hopefully we can pull together and support the efforts to avoid Southampton's financial demise before our survival is threatened. It is amazing how we as fans only truly understand the gravity of the problem when oblivion looms. If we have to sell as we all know we will, I hope BR, the Russos, GT etc do not get a load of abuse. They won't from me, although I reckon I may get it from vOr. Come on my friend...I miss you. I like laughing at the nonsense you come up with. We could and possibly should have won this game, although the free kick equaliser was a fabulous strike. The fact that our expectations are so much higher is a good sign, but we know we still have a way to go to stabalise. I listened to Hants radio on Wednesday night...Mark Dennis...remember him, a full back with a terrible disciplinary record? They were delighted with their draw, which shows how times change. I enjoyed the second half, and although we were not on song, have no complaints, although it seemed a strange substitution to bring on another centre half, which was presumably to counteract their own substitution. Seemed like the right thing to do at the time! Saturday will be important to maintain momentum.
Good luck lads.

Agents plant rumours (about players or managers), the press repeats them and fans amplify them on discussion boards. It all helps to justify the agents fees, it sell papers and it keeps the fans indignant and /or excited. It works because sometimes some of the rumours have a grain of truth in them, and because football is a business that is so characterised by the unexpected, that even the oddest rumour is sometimes true. But mainly the rumours are unfounded, which is the case here. The Russo's are too sensible to sack Rodgers and GT would never let it happen: and if Rodgers ever left for "a better offer" then Wise is the last person who would be appointed at Watford-- "Get Shorty!" Never!

BR appointed as much as anything as he was cheap compared to the £10K a week Boothroyd was on which pales into insignificance to the £3M a year Wise was on at Newcastle.

O'Toole was given a huge (£3- £4K) weekly pay rise by Boothroyd to ensure he signed an extended contract - As much as discipline issues it is his wages that mean that he will be sold in the Summer.

I have not been to a game for months, because of work commitments. Half of the team has changed and I was very pleased to see the improvement. The most noticeable change is the quality of the play. It is good to see some skillful football and a belief that they can hold the ball in tight situations. Tamas looks energised and almost aggressive at times. Loach looked confident, despite his mixed kicking. Cauna has real skill and broke up some Saints attacks very well. With more first-team experience he should be able to get some crosses in. Seeing him warm-up, I noticed his strike is sharp and stinging, so was not surprised that he scored. Delighted that Doyley is still in the team. He is a genuine Watford player and I sense that at last someone is giving him some skills training. I am just waiting to see one of his charges forward lead somewhere. Against Southampton we were a bit lack-lustre, but still created a lot. I enjoyed the game and look forward to attending a lot more next season.
