Barnsley pegged back by Smith's 16th of season

Watford extended their unbeaten league run at Vicarage Road to seven games and moved another step closer to mathematical safety as a late Tommy Smith goal earned a 1-1 draw at home to Barnsley at Vicarage Road this afternoon.

The Hornets were again below-par and it looked like Jonathan Macken’s goal midway through the second half would be enough to secure the Tykes a potentially priceless win.

But with two minutes remaining, Will Hoskins managed to prize open the defence following a free-kick and Smith was in the right place to net his 16th of the campaign.

That was Watford’s first on-target attempt of the match although, given the way recent games have gone, it made a pleasant change for the Hornets to score late and not the opposition.

Despite the disappointment of being pegged back in the last minute by Southampton in mid-week, Brendan Rodgers opted to name an unchanged starting line-up.

It was the visitors who sought to make the early running, and they had the first opening inside two minutes when a long Rob Kozluk free-kick was held up by Darren Moore in the Hornets’ area and Jobi McAnuff’s attempted clearance rebounded up to Michael Mifsud, but his header was tamely deflected through to Scott Loach from ten yards.

Watford were soon on the attack though, with McAnuff and Aleksandrs Cauna both seeing shots blocked, before Jamal Campbell-Ryce lashed wide at the other end following another Barnsley free-kick.

But the Hornets should have done better with a move put together after 15 minutes. Adrian Mariappa played the ball down the inside right channel to Tamas Priskin, who cut back into the area on his left foot before laying the ball into the stride of the onrushing Ross Jenkins, but he appeared to lose his footing at the key moment and skied a right-footed effort over Heinz Muller’s goal.

The visitors continued to give as good as they got and Campbell-Ryce latched onto a loose touch to open up a shooting opportunity on his right foot, but fired straight at Loach from 20 yards.

But it was the Hornets who came within inches of taking the lead in the 22nd minute, starting with a clearance from Loach that went through Cork and McAnuff and ended with Jenkins feeding Priskin, who struck an early right-footed shot from the edge of the area that beat the dive of Muller, but clipped the outside of his right-hand post.

It was then Barnsley’s turn to hit the woodwork, albeit in more speculative fashion, with Bobby Hassell hitting a cross-cum-shot from the right that appeared to deceive Loach as it bounced down off his crossbar.

The end-to-end nature of the exchanges continued, with Muller charging from his line to deny Priskin, before McAnuff fizzed a low centre across the six-yard box that nobody in a yellow shirt was able to get a boot on.

Almost predictably though, the next chance fell to the Tykes, with Anderson De Silva getting in front of Smith to get his head to Andranik’s corner from the left, but his attempt flashed wide of Loach’s right-hand post.

Watford then had some reasonable possession, without being able to create too much, until the 37th minute when Cauna did well to get in a low cross from the by-line towards the near post where McAnuff got across, but Stephen Foster tracked him well to concede the corner.

But that was it for a first-half in which the Hornets had their moments, but rarely threatened to take charge of affairs.

Like in the first-half, it was the Tykes who had the first chance of the second period when Macken fed Bogdanovic on the right and the ball was inadvertently turned towards his own goal by the otherwise excellent Jay DeMerit, and Loach did very well to keep it out. However, it wouldn’t have counted because play was belatedly pulled back for an offside.

Davey was the first manager to play his hand in the 56th minute, bringing on Adam Hammill for Bogdanovic. This prompted an angry reaction from the visiting faithful, who had presumably failed to notice that their right-sided midfielder was limping.

Rodgers quickly followed suit, replacing Cauna, who hadn’t done too much wrong, with Danny Rose, and on 63 minutes Priskin made way for Hoskins.

But four minutes later, Barnsley took the lead – and it was hard to argue against them deserving it.

Mifsud received the ball in the right-corner and laid it back to Hammill, who twisted and turned, before swinging a cross into the six-yard box where Macken took advantage of the ball-watching Hornets rearguard to steer the ball home from close range.

And the former Manchester City striker could have made it two moments later, when a poor Williamson clearance fell to him on the edge of the area, but he fired over.

The Hornets, who had not had a goal attempt since Priskin struck the post, continued to struggle to anything going forward, although with just over ten minutes remaining Smith did get to the by-line, but he was unable to pick out a team-mate with his cross.

Kayode Odejayi then replaced Mifsud, who took so long to leave the pitch he was booked as he departed, and within moments of entering the fray the substitute would have scored had it not been for a fine stop from Loach.

Hugo Colace came on for Macken with two minutes left as Watford were preparing to take a set-piece with three minutes remaining, and from it they pulled level.

Barnsley failed to deal with the ball into the box, Hoskins did very well to get the ball away from Muller and then pull it back across the six-yard box and there was Smith to bundle in his 16th of the season to make it 1-1.

Not a good performance from us...we seem rather complacent I feel.

Midfield was missing and a poor goal to give away from our point of view.

Thank goodness we got that late goal because a defeat would have pulled us back into the mire a bit.

Point at Norwich and we'll be safe.

I see the screen has packed in now!

I think the main problem the last couple of games has beenthe lack of midfield,Cork and Jenkins are obviously begining to feel it.Still showed good resilience to keep on battling and that is to be commended.
Thought the ref was a tw&t again.

very poor and once again a negative line up with only Priskin upfront ,do not try and say smith was upfront as he was NOT ,we are at home but play ONE up front !!,Priskin is made scapegoat upfront when things do not go well yet he is on his own ,surley at home we are better off playing smithy in his BEST position of wide right ,stick macanuff left and put Hoskins as Rasiak injured, upfront with Priskin ,todays formation may work a bit away from home but not at home ,3 points from last three home games not good enough very disappointing and worrying Rodgers does not seem to know how to change our predicatable formation ,ok yes credit where credit due he has done enough to keep us up But have big concerns for next season if we do not GET SOME experience in midfield AND SOME STRIKERS IN !

It's a poor performace although we have buried them in the 1st Half. Jack Cork has been awful in last 2 gmes maybe he needs a break but do we have anyone left to cover him ?

Danny Rose and Cauna were the highlights for me.

You felt something would happen from these two as the rest of the team looked like they were worried about missing their flights.

Oh dear, that felt like we'd regressed back to the beginning of the season. A truly awful game. Bad defending for the goal, although on the whole the defence were pretty good and Loachy made a terrific save to keep us in the game. As usual Tommy bailed us out, a goal which didn't look like coming because we seemed pretty toothless after Tamas went off.

The thing that worries me is the midfield. Heard BR on 3CR after the game saying he wanted to freshen things up as there were some tired players on the pitch. I'm afraid the two players who looked like they needed a rest were Jenkins and Cork. So, with Cowie injured, how does he freshen up central midfield? There are no more central midfielders at the club. That's why sending Williamson out on loan was a mistake.

McAnuff has another good game, but Cauna has to try and go round people. As for Rose....looks like he's another Bridcutt/Hoyte type signing by Rodgers. Very fast he may be, one for the future...perhaps. But at the moment he hasn't got it. He was DIRE for the entire time he was on the pitch yesterday. We'd be much better of with Harley on the left wing.

On the evidence of the last couple of games it seems most of the team have decided we're safe and are already thinking about their summer holidays. Which is a shame because getting into the top 10 after the start we had to this season would be a really good springboard for next year.

Very poor performance yesterday. Totally agree with everything said here in that Cork and particularly Jenkins look in urgent need of a rest.

It's a huge ask for two youngsters to play almost and entire season without a break at the intensity of the Championship.

Letting Williamson go out on loan now looks a folly as he would have been ideal cover to give the two central midfielders a much needed rest.

Certainly Jenkins looked very poor yesterday and was constantly caught in possession and misplaced his passes.

However, on the whole we were resilient and deserved the equaliser.

For my money, Brendan needs to make a few tweaks in the summer and if he gets them right, I think we stand a chance of challenging for the play offs next season.

As has been said, generally Brendan has taken us in the right direction and for the most part the football has been far more palatable than the first half of the season.

Thought Mcanuff and Lloydey had good games. Cork looked tired and was a yard off the pace at times, caught in possession to often. Young Ross was often covering for him and tired towards the end. Smithy is tireless and never gives up the cause and deservedly scored. Disgraceful ref again who let to many elbows and push- in- the- back tackles go especially for them. Had he been firmer and booked a few of their main offenders earlier it would have changed the way the tykes continually played the physical stuff. Overall, I liked the way BR changed it around when Willo came on, playing 4-4-2. Lets grind out another win on Monday and look forward to next season.Keep looking up!

To those who have written Lee W off, hope you realise now he is needed.

Nice touch of humour from Brendan wiping his brow with relief.

Ref was bad and WFC werent far behind

It is not normally worth commenting on referees as somebody has to be the man in black. However, is it me or am too biased towards Watford but the Championship refs at the Vic this season have been various degrees of awful. Messrs Atwell, Woolmer, Whitestone are certainly the worst of a bad bunch we have seen at home this season. Some of the dubious "tackling" by some visiting teams would certainly not have been accepted in the Premiership...... Refs have to play their part too, we seem to getting some right duffers lately.

A big relief to get that goal at the end, since most of the teams below and around us picked up points, meaning we are are STILL not mathematically clear of relegation, and to drop a point yesterday would have been cutting it too fine. Our youngsters in mid-field did seem to get hustled out of the game--inexperience or too lightweight?. Barnsley commited 24 fouls in the match, mainly for aggressive tackles and pushing. We conceded 13 fouls, mainly for off-side.We have seen this pattern before, and refs are not giving us much protection. Actually I think we may do better against Norwich , on a better pitch and against a side that tries to play more football. But they will be highly motivated for this one. We need to be motivated too, throughout the team. We are NOT safe!
