Win moves Birmingham City step closer to promotion

Watford’s eight-match unbeaten run at Vicarage Road came to an end this afternoon when Birmingham City took another step closer to a return to the Premiership with a 1-0 victory.

It is now one win in eight for the Hornets after substitute Cameron Jerome scored the only goal of the game two minutes after coming off the bench, courtesy of a shot that took a cruel deflection off Ross Jenkins.

The Blues deserved the win on the back of their first-half dominance, but the home side came into the game more after the break and came close to making the breakthrough themselves on a couple of occasions.

Brendan Rodgers made just the one change from the 2-0 defeat at Norwich City, with Jack Cork returning at the expense of Jon Harley. However, the Watford boss also opted to change to a 4-3-3 formation, with Danny Rose pushing up from central midfield and Tommy Smith and Jobi McAnuff providing the support for Will Hoskins from out wide.

The afternoon began with a minute’s applause in memory of former player and Watford boss Mike Keen, but it was the visitors who sought to make the early running.

The home side though, soon looked to find their attacking feet, although Blues skipper Damien Johnson was the first player to have a shot, but his mis-hit attempt from the edge of the area was blocked.

Scott Loach was the first keeper into action in the ninth minute when he had to dive to his left to hold a right-footed James McFadden shot after Jay DeMerit had just lost out in a battle for the ball with Gary O’Connor on the edge of the Watford box.

The visitors were dominating possession at this point and they almost made the breakthrough in the 12th minute when Lee Bowyer found O’Connor, who got in between two Hornets defenders, but stabbed the ball wide of Loach’s right-hand post.

Mike Williamson was then forced to head behind to prevent O’Connor getting his head to a deep Fahey cross after a superb long pass from David Murphy had split the Watford rearguard.

O’Connor had another opening soon after, but on this occasion he placed a left-footed effort from the same side of the area too close to Loach following another decent pass in the area behind Adrian Mariappa.

Fahey was the next to chance his arm – and again the Watford stopper was equal to it – after Stephen Carr had anticipated Lloyd Doyley’s attempted pass to McAnuff and broke forward to the edge of the 18-yard box.

Loach showed more clean hands again in the 21st minute to hold a 20-yard left-footed drive from Sebastian Larsson, and then Williamson made a good interception on the edge of his own area to prevent Bowyer latching onto McFadden’s through ball and having a clear route to goal.

But having been firmly on the back foot for the opening 24 minutes, Watford nearly took the lead with their first attempt – and from the most unlikeliest of sources.

Doyley latched on to a stray pass around 30 yards out, took one step inside and then hit a right-footed drive that had Colin Doyle scrambling across his goal as the ball went not too far wide of his right-hand post.

But the pattern of the match was soon restored, with Bowyer seeing a piledriver blocked before Loach again made a smart stop to keep out Fahey’s follow-up.

Smith had a promising opening for the home side in the 29th minute when Jenkins swept the ball out to him on the right side of the area, but, after cutting inside and beating Murphy, he dragged a left-footed shot well wide of the target.

A better opportunity soon followed when Hoskins and Smith combined to neat effect from a Loach clearance, with the former doing well to dig out a cross from the right side of the 18-yard box which McAnuff clipped goalwards at the near post and Doyle decided not to take any risks and tipped the ball over.

The next chance also fell the Hornets’ way in the 38th minute, when a Doyley cross found Smith in some space towards the right side of the area, but his first-time effort was straight at Doyle.

But Loach, who was having an excellent afternoon, was soon called upon again when Larsson worked a neat give-and-go with Bowyer before hitting a right-footed shot from the same side of the area that the keeper blocked behind with his legs. If that wasn’t good enough, the England Under-21 international then produced another fine stop to deny Bowyer.

Franck Queudrue and Larsson both saw efforts blocked, while O’Connor headed over, as the visitors took their first-half attempt count to 15 as the half drew to a close, but Watford held firm to ensure it remained 0-0 at the break.

The Watford boss opted to make a change at the interval, with Grzegorz Rasiak introduced at the expense of Hoskins to give the Hornets a more physical edge up front. Furthermore, Rose and Smith also swapped positions, with the latter now providing the central attacking support.

It didn’t take the changes long to have an impact as, in the 49th minute, Rasiak produced a fine cross from the right and Rose flung an outstretched leg at the ball to send it just the wrong side of Doyle’s right-hand upright. Then, three minutes later, Rasiak wasn’t quite able to reach a Smith cut-back after the Hornets’ top scorer had done very well to reach the by-line.

Buoyed by these openings, Watford continued to look to take the game to the visitors, but just short of the hour-mark Rodgers decided to make a second change, with Harley coming on for Rose.

The Hornets still had to be on their guard at the back though, with Mariappa doing well to head behind and prevent O’Connor from getting on the end of a deep Larsson cross.

But the home side went close again in the 63rd when Rasiak did very well to get his head around a McAnuff cross from the right and direct the ball down towards the bottom right-hand corner and force Doyle into a smart stop. DeMerit then beat the Blues keeper to the resultant corner, but his header went up in the air and dropped behind.

Watford old boy Kevin Phillips entered the fray as a 64th-minute replacement for Larsson, and then Jerome for O’Connor seven minutes later. The change paid off within two minutes.

Bowyer played the ball to the former Cardiff City striker on the left side of the area and, after toying with DeMerit, he hit a right-footed shot that took a wicked deflection off Jenkins’ heel and gave Loach no chance as the ball went into the right corner of the net to give the Blues a 1-0 lead.

Alex McLeish played his final hand with six minutes remaining, with Queudrue making way for Djimi Traore.

The home side tried to lift themselves in the closing stages, but, a couple of corners aside, they created little and slipped to a second successive defeat.

Abysmal performance again and more Rodgers waffle afterwards ,First half a disgrace WE ARE AT HOME yet have one player upfront on his own and play poor Rose in centre midfield again !! did you not learn anything at the debacle that was Norwich,Finally HT comes and Rasiak comes on BUT the "second striker" as rodgers refers to him as hoskins is taken off ! ,Rose is put left wing thank goodness ,starts to roast the ageing Steven Carr SO what does Rodgers do ,TAKES HIM OFF !!! absolute shambles ,relegatin form has returned and we are still not safe for this season however unlikley us going down i fear massiveley for next season under this manager ,our midfield are kids we have no strikers Rodgers does not fill me with confidense he is a negative manager ,very angry and disappointed !!

Herts, I agree, Rose plays well wide on the left, he is not a central midfield player. As you said as soon as he starts to show what he is good at and he gets taken off ?? As much as I like Harley, as a direct left wing replacement, surely Cauna was the man to bring on. I really want to like Rogers, but he just seems to want to play like we did in the first 30mins of his first game and always sets up the team in a defensive manner. We had that good run when we played more attacking football with two forwards and support going forward. I think he thought we were safe so he could go back to his desired way of playing. I have been to the last two away games and have my tickets for Coventry, but the last few games make me question if I should renew my season ticket. I would rather see us trying to play attacking football and loose than go through a season like the 1st half of the Doncaster game.

Wot a load of rubbish that was today, it was like watching Swan Lake, and when the goal went in the goalie just stood there and watched it go in and to make it worse i had this man behind me giving a 2nd hand commentery, wot a complete and utter idiot, and he thought he knew wot he was talking about and he didnt, lol thank god i dont go that often. I think we need players who want to care about winning.

oh dear, oh dear loose by a deflected goal to 2nd in league despite numerous close chances and Birmingham crying out for the final whistle and the dimwits are out in force.
Ist half containing job- not pretty but job done. 2nd half change formation and and try and capitalise for their need for three points - very nearly achieved on a buget a fraction of the oppostion. tactically correct with the personnel available. Personally would have preferred Cauna to Rose but there will be a valid reson behind the selection

We have played some poor sides over the last few games and not really attacked any of them. This is not a one game reaction, it is a reflection on recent weeks. Why are we playing containing when we are at home, and even given Rodgers reason for the initial formation, why did it take to half time to make a significant change to it. Rodgers said the Norwich game was one of his most disappointing, so why did he not use all of his subs to try and change things ?

the only "dimwit " as you say is you Psycho1 ,you say 1st half containing job !!
it's comments like that ,that just explain what this manager is all about ,we were at home for christ sake ,attack teams and you have at least a chance of getting a goal and winning and are not at risk of conceeding late goals ,something we are the masters at by the way , and it be too late to respond ,negative tactics = no goals = no points and by the way we are no safe yet !!

Rodgers has done a good job since coming in, but this is the second or third home game recently when we've played the whole first half with one up front and we've looked woeful as a result. Then we've played a more attacking formation in the second half and there's been a 100% improvement. To start claiming Rodgers should go is so ridiculous it's barely worth commenting on, but one thing is clear to everyone - we need to play with two strikers at home!!!!!

Posted last night obviously not read by players.

I have a message for the majority of the Watford fc 1st team Players. Your performance and attitude in the last three games against teams below you in the league were abysmal, one point from a possible nine with two games at home. Most of you (in your head) have already packed your suitcases for the summer holiday after the away result at Doncaster.
The performance at Norwich was appalling, you have let the fans, the manager and directors down but most of all yourselves.
Most of you Watford players will have seen the Chelsea – Liverpool game in midweek, the majority of these highly paid stars most with enormous talent played with a passion, tenacity, straining every sinew in their body until the last seconds of extra time. If you want a model professional look no further than Frank Lampard, apart from his obvious talent, his commitment, passion (never say die attitude) is an example of what is lacking in the Watford fc team. Frank’s father works for Watford ask him about Frank’s attitude and learn. Stop being a pretentious (up your own ***) wanna be!
Make no mistake we fans know Watford is a special club we have achieved success in the last thirty years way beyond expectation (ask Graham Taylor?) Watford fans demand full commitment and passion from their team (you will not get criticized for trying)!
Something special is happening at Watford, Elton John and Graham Taylor are back, the Roussos are honest directors, in Brendan Rodgers (your manager) we have a potential winner in his short time in the face of adversity he has already shown his calibre. Blow your chance at Watford and you will regret it at leisure!
We fans know this team already has great potential, with the possibility of the midfielders Smith and Cowie combined with the threat of Rasiak and Priskin backed up with a promising goalkeeper, and defence Watford are as good as anybody in this division. This team would scare all championship defences and half the premier league, the performance against Chelsea proved that, it’s no coincidence Chelsea’s season turned after their exertions against Watford in the last 15 minutes against Watford; it was their catalyst to go on a fantastic run. Some Chelsea players have admitted this!
OK through unfortunate injuries Brendan cannot field his strongest team against Birmingham, which means the squad players have to ‘turn up’ and do the job, this is a great opportunity to show what you can do. We Watford fans demand of you the Watford 1st team players; 100% commitment, passion, football intelligence and ‘never say die’ attitude until the final second of the game. We want it tomorrow and every time you put the Watford shirt on.
You players have the fortunate luck to play for Watford, many people in life curse their missing out on missed opportunities, realise this and the sky is the limit! The proof is you need it, is what Brian Clough achieved at Derby and especially Nottingham Forrest!

Best 2 midfielders out on loan ,players playing out of postion Cork/Jenkins 1 goal in 41 yes 41 combined games between them what did you think was going to happen. Take Tommey Smith goals and assits out we would already be in div 1.A good football team has good balance and is powerful and we are neither, our 3rd top goalscorer out on loan what a joke.Might just survive this season but 3 big teams coming down with money 2 spend , and 3 enthusastic teams coming up desperate to do well.I know this is easy 2 say now but the job should have been given 2 Malky, the players played 4 him .BR always on about a passing game, well you can t do it on our pitch and we didn t do at ipswich/norwich 2 best pitches in the league.Would JJ/LW want 2 play 4 a manger that does not rate them. Will TS/TP/JH/JM want to play in a struggling team for another season, proberly not.
Heres 2 next season ,hopefully in the championship but for how long.

To reiterate a point i made after an earlier article, Hoskins is not good enough, ball squirted free from him to the opposition almost every time although some of the service to him was not brilliant either to be fair. Thought we were were too easily squeezed out of it by a streetwise side who needed a result. It showed how far we need to travel to get to where they are now. They have done it with old heads not good enough now to play regular top flight games but it can also be achieved, i think, with little money and a good manager which i think we may have.

All you bandwagon moaners who seem to cant wait until a wheel starts to come off start watching the positives, instead of being selective in your narrow views. The recent games have been poor which worries me because we might well lose key players next season and not be that good.

VoR you are out of order and very unfair. Boofers was not as good as his arrogance would have people believe. I enjoy the Brendan style of football and so do many of the other supporters. Wasnt it you that claimed Mark Ashton was such agreat fan of WFC because he had pictures up in his house of WFC.
They have most probably been changed for Wycombe Wanderers and wasps.

As for today , first half we were horrible the youngsters have little left to give, Loach decided that hoskins would win headers, Cork failed to complete passes and Jenkins failed to get a grip.

Second half brendan got a much better balance with Ras up front and except for thirty seconds of abherration from Ross we would have got a point.

The differences between Brendan and boofers is that Brendans team plays footballand at half time Brendan can help to change the balance in a game. Something that Aidy failed to do from late October 2007.

We may not become world beaters but having financially been wrecked by those you champion VoR we will survive, play football and include the word integrity amongst our positives, something that the old regime struggled with. So my advice is get behind the team, trust brendan and hope that, despite the previously inflicted financial damage caused by the previous regime, we can improve our finances and league position over the next couple of years.

So far I have defended BR against his detractors. Today he got it badly wrong - as he did against Plymouth.First, you cannot play the small Hoskins up front on his own against a giant centre half. Secondly, you certainly don't pump high balls up to him. Thirdly, Hoskins should have played alongside Rasiak. Next, why substitute Hoskins for Rasiak in the second half. Yes, bring on Rasiak but take off the ineffective Rose. Fifthly, why ever play young guys like Bridcutt, Hoyte and Rose in a struggling team? Next, what was the point of bringing on Harley? The midfield, though not good, was comparatively OK. No.7 - why not feed the ball more to our two decent ball-players, Smith and McAnuff? Also instruct these two, particularly Smith, to come off their wings more often. Nearly finished! If at all possible, definitely get O'Toole and probably Lee Williamson back from their loans. Lastly, when losing 1-0 why not bring on Cauna for a bit of pace? BR - you had a bad, bad afternoon.

Norwich have Reading after that and well the Royals appear hopeless at the moment...might not reach the play-offs even!

Its just annoying because actually we'd be safe if another 2 points were ours and it be a shame to see the hard work done by Rodgers and his team with good signings only just see us stay up when we should be higher based on performances.

If Mr. Uppercase is really in the USA and not North of Watford, possibly Bedfordshire then he really is a delight because yet again it shows how uneducated, simple and niaive so many Americans are. I live in Canada and we frequently laugh at their arrogance, negative foreign policy, failure to integrate and increasing obesity. They are the perfect communist state. They believe they are free, 40% have never travelled outside the US and approx 17% are still illiterate. 60% do NOT own passports.
I am guessing that Brendansbro (uppercase) probably lives in Houston or Chicago, the two most obese cities in the US. Get a life. People on here DO support the club, we just hate to see a lack of passion and pride and an ARROGANCE to think we are safe.

Lets hope for a performance against Coventry just to be totally.

Personally I feel Rodgers was wrong to say a few weeks back we were safe...it was like Aidy last season thinking and telling Mahon for example we are going up and look what happened there.

Your probably right in that we won't go down but there will be a less positive feel if it looks we just avoid relegation which as I said is not what most of our performances deserve...we have done enough up to the Donny match to come mid-table.

Lets face it , we played relegation type football for a whole year the last year under Boothroyd with rubbish players on inflated wages and transfer fees. Brendan has done a terrific job, the trouble we have is football players are not the most intelligent people and are generally paid too much - i think not only are they tired, some have taken their foot off the gas.

Yesterday first half we hardly got into Birmingham's half - desperately missed Cowie and Priskin and a fully fit Raziak. I am looking forward to next season though. Lets all get behind the team and the manager

Missed yesterday but understand we weren't quite as bad as we have been in the last couple of games.

However, as I said earlier in the week it's a mistake to sit back and think we're safe. If that is what BR is doing then it would be really worrying.

I notice Williamson scored a good goal yesterday for Preston, and we had Danny Rose in the centre of midfield. BR seems obsessed with midfielders when the sensible thing would have been to rely on the quality midfielders we had at the club and get a forward in on loan. Hoskins is not the answer and I doubt he'll be here next year. With Rasiak only half-fit and Priskin out we're completely devoid of ideas.

Maybe BR is just riding out the season until Coppell gets the sack.....

Though "Brendans bro" does sound like a bit of a redneck, we should not use his poorly expressed and stupid remarks as a reason to denigrate a whole nation--especially one which has provided us with Bob Dylan, Blondie and The Simpsons. Let us focus on the football. Actually the performance on Saturday was not bad--no attacking threat in the first half to be sure, (their centre half could have gone on holiday) but we did defend well against a surprisingly direct Birmingham attack. That team is full of Premiership experienced players, so we did well to keep to 0-0 at half time. But the second half was very well contested, was enjoyable to watch and we could have scored at least one goal--Rasiak was very good. Their goal was a bit flukey, so the result was a disappointment not a disaster nor evidence of managerial incompetence. We do miss Cowie and Priskin, Rose is yet to convince and the young mid-fielders are feeling the pace. It does look like a mistake to have let Williamson go to Preston , but Rodgers could not have foreseen the injury to Cowie. It is also disappointing that we are limping to safety, and may have to depend on results elsewhere to achieve it, when a couple of weeks ago it looked like we would secure safety in style and be going into next season on a wave of optimism. Now it looks like we will be going into next season on a more doubtful note, but maybe a more realistic one. I will be glad when we get that extra point though--or if Norwich lose today.

Berks Horn says...
12:42pm Sun 19 Apr 09

Should be ok now I agreed...

I just want to see us finish the season well with a couple of decent performances bit like the 2ns half yesterday.

Yeah glad we can now limp to safety by dint of Norwich being rubbish. We may as well not bother with the remaining games...let's just muck about a bit. He could try Rose up front, he hasn't tried him there yet. At least it would keep him far away from our goal!

Roger68 says...

Yes, it would take some freaky results for us to go down now. We would have to lose by lots and Norwich would have to win two games by lots (including one against Reading) for them to catch us on points and exceed our GD . But the last few performances have left me less optimistic than I was about next season. We will probably have a weaker team than we have now--at least to begin with. We will lose some of our better players because they will get better wage offers elsewhere (Priskin, Smith) or because we get transfer offers we can't refuse (Mariappa, Jenkins?) or because their home clubs want them to get experience elsewhere (Cork). Are we going to replace these with better players on loan or from the lower divisions? If we struggle now with the players we have, how will we get on with a team that is likely less skilful and less experienced at this level in most departments? Rodgers will need all his contacts and "development skills" to see us as top half challengers next season.

Setting aside the homophobia (along with the anti-Americanism) what exactly is the point that enlightened one and givemwatfor are making here? Do they dispute that the last few games have seen a falling away in performances and results that might make one a bit less optimistic (or a bit more realistic) about next season? Of course we are all looking forward to next season , and under Rodgers it will certainly be interesting. But with him still obviously a learner as a manager, and with the team bound to be restructured (under tight financial constraints) it would be wise not to expect too much too soon. He has done a good job this year (largely with a squad that Boothroyd assembled but latterly could not motivate) but has shown his inexperience too, in team selections and tactics. Well done to him for achieving his first objective (avoiding relegation) and starting the first phase of team rebuilding, by bringing in Cowie and Williamson. But next season will be even more demanding, since some of our valued players WILL leave (and will need replacing) and the division will not be any easier with WBA, Newcastle and Leicester in it. He is a quick learner, has good contacts in the game, will give youth a chance , but is also somewhat ruthless with players who do not meet his standards. All good points-- it will be an interesting journey with him next season, but we must not be impatient when he gets it wrong or get over excited when he gets it right. But you can get excited if we are in the top 6 next April.

Top Six?.....
Do you honestly believe he'll emulate the 2nd most successful manager in our history with his 1st full season? (Reading permitting)

I stayed in hospitality throughout the 2nd half after the worse tactical display I've ever witnessed, so can't comment on that half.....
It was dire, against a dire Brum side, It was woeful, inept, clueless.

Lets just see is Rodgers is able to keep the key players and if not can replace them well.

We've really missed Cowie it seems and yesterday Smith/McAnuff were not that effective until Rasiak came on...who one anothewr we may or may not sign.

Could see a lot of different players next season either signed or from the Youth system!

I just hope people don't expect us to fly up the league and increase the pressure on Rodgers.

We do need to learn how to play 442 though rather than rely on 4-5-1

To be honest, VoR, I have no idea where we will finish next year, any more than you have. I hope it would be in the top 12, which would be showing signs of progress , but mainly I hope we play entertaining and effective football, and see some of the young Watford players come through to be first team contenders, if not regulars. After that I would hope to see Rodgers build a promotion contending team in the next season. Oh, and I hope to see some financial security, board room stability and ground improvements. Realistic, pipe dream or too modest? You tell me.(By "Reading permitting" I presume you mean assuming that they do not poach him, not just that Reading win or draw against Norwich next week, thus ensuring our safety?)

Load of Hay is in Oxhey - which is in Watford unlike Bushey and Kings Langley. Unfortunately as soon as Watford hit 50 points the team stopped. Losing Williamson to Preston was a shame, he would have been a useful replacement for an out of sorts Jenkins. Next season the squad will need to work even harder to reach 54 points without smith; L williamson; mcanuff; demeritt; poom; eustace; etc - Southampton have shown how hard it is to keep going year after year of squad downsizing

If two messages come up from me sorry, i'm having problems with my internet access today!

To all those with doubts about BR, before AB was sacked how many of you would not have taken the position the team is in right now i.e. two games to go, six points off the drop zone and needing just one point to be mathematically safe from relegation? And generally speaking have we not had some better performances since BR took charge?

Have we not also got a manager who isn't self deluded like AB was, who doesn't think he will be England manager within five years and who refuses to listen to those with more experience (although what Lampard sr actually does is anybodies guess!).

Sure BR's green around the ears as far as the job goes so yes he will make mistakes, and don't forget he has been dropped right in it, having been lied too before he took the job on and having to juggle players around to make finances work. The players he has brought in permanently have been very good and those on loan shown great promise.

So yes, past two or three games not the best performances but as for Birmingham did we really expect to get anything from them?

As far as WFC are concerned there is only one relegation spot we can fill and five teams below us that ALL have to get better results than us in order to drop us in it. It would be amazing if that happened, but yes please better performances for the last two games - win or lose please try try and try your best, thats all we can ask.

Judge BR on next season, personally I don't think we'll be in the play offs but we'll be near enough there to have had a good season all things considered.

Andrew1963 says...
12:25pm Mon 20 Apr 09

Feff, I think we have 5 or 6 players out on loan - Watford will be off loading all staff on more than £5K a week - Thast means offers for Smith and McAnuff, Hoskins, DeMeritt, O'Toole will be accepted if half reasonable. Poom (well we might miss him if we have to rely on loach and a junior), Eustace I agree he was not a great recruit. And others like Bangura might not be in the mix. My general point is that small squads full of inexperienced players struggle over a 46 game season. Not sure Cork will be here next season, which leaves us short in central Midfield

Paradise Watford says...

Does anybody know if Derby HAVE to keep Ellington or if after the years loan it was an option to 'buy' him or return him?

I hope its written in concrete that they have to keep him otherwise chances are they'll not want him (not as if he's scored much, or even been a first team regular and with a new manager having come in...)

Can't see there being any other takers for him either, not with the wages he currently gets and will want to get anyway, so if he does return the club will have that milstone around its neck. Only hope in that situation is that much like he has with Priskin BR can get some better performances out of him.

Andrew1963 says...
3:26pm Mon 20 Apr 09

I think the Ellington deal was a season long loan at a fee of £1 million and then the option to sign on a frre transfer at the end of the season. thereby denying West Brom the extra payment for appearances for Watford and the sell on % of the transfer fee. The main thing was to get his wages off the books. So even if he returns the club will have to make him redundant and pay up his contract and he will be a free agent.

Paradise Watford says...
3:49pm Mon 20 Apr 09

He has one year left on his contract with us if i'm right? Thats a big pay off but you're right, if the alternative is to have to shell out even more money due to appearances... although even with a sell on clause wouldn't it be worth trying to get a fee for him. Again not that he'll be in demand with the past couple of seasons he's had.

Just one other financial pickle to add to the WFC mess hey!

Feff says...
4:48pm Mon 20 Apr 09

And who created the pickle. Yes, folks, the one and only Adrian Boothroyd, friend to only VoR.

VoR says...
9:53pm Mon 20 Apr 09

So the pickle he got us into was to..............
Keep us up...
Get promoted...
Get us into the playoffs.
If you can't see that you're more deluded than BR for taking us on!

derry pigweed says...
10:56pm Mon 20 Apr 09

Birmingham will finish in 2nd place
They were not alot better than us a few tweaks here and there, a couple of decent signings and a new captain, we will be a top six championship team

Feff says...
11:01pm Mon 20 Apr 09

So the pickle he got us into was relegation from the Premier League, throwing away an amazing points lead the following season and not winning promotion, nearly getting us relegated this season, buying some of the worst players ever to wear a Watford shirt AND paying some of the highest salaries since Viali was manager. Your turn, VoR!

VoR is right in as such AB did have an amazing start to his short time at WFC and lets be honest didn't we all love him for it at the time. I still remember the play off final against Leeds, and even the previous games against Palace. Brilliant stuff

Its a fact that with getting us promoted to the Prem AB is in terms of success the second best manager the club has had after GT. Saddly he then turned into one of the worst! And his ego is to blame for that 100%.

The old board do have a lot to answer for but maybe they were blinded by AB's previous sucess? And he did have the gift of the gab hey! I mean, at the start of last season didn't we all have high expectations?

But it appears that AB's ego turned things sour with coaching staff and players alike, he made some very poor signings at great cost, sold good players and tactically he didn't appear to have a clue especially after Burkinshaw left. And the rest is history.

I think he will get another chance somewhere and if he controls his ego I think he will do well.

In BR I think we have however someone with more tactical nous, with better interpersonal and coaching skills and who isn't arrogant enough to think he knows everything (hence why Lampard is an advisor). With his signings of Williamson and Cowie and even the Cauna fella it appears that he also has an eye for a good player and with his connections we hopefully have access to some great youngsters that we can get in on loan.

It would be interesting to see what he could do given the same financial backing that AB had but I still think that he will do well for as long as he is with us.

essex_stretch66 says...
10:50am Tue 21 Apr 09

I think most of us agree AB time was up and he did loose the changeing room, but are we further forward, is the football a lot better At the start of the season we didn t have a decent center half and an inconsistant keeper, now these postions have been sorted out results have picked up.When BR took over we were 20th and we are only just above that now.We have good players in the reserves not getting a chance what signal does that send out to them.Like to see Parkes Henderson Young given a chance in the final 2 games, afterall that is the idea of having a youth/reserve team. The loanies are no better then what we already have.Sonner or later these players will have to be thrown in and given a chance,we can not start next season with 4/5 loanies with the chance of them being recalled at any time by there current clubs. My team to start at Coventy LOACH DOYLEY MARIAPPA WILLIAMSON PARKES SMITH YOUNG JENKINS HARLEY PRISKIN HOSKINS SUBS LEE MCANUFF HENDERSON CAUNA DEMERIT

Paradise Watford says...
3:19pm Tue 21 Apr 09

When BR arrived it was a case of firefighting on and off the field.

He had to make immediate decisions on playing staff and its only natural that he brought in players he would have known about having seen them play in the reserves. Its not reflection on our own reserve team players and i'm sure now BR has a better opinion on their abilities they will feature more next season.

Lets not forget too that he was lied too before taking on the job, had a change of board and was immediately asked to cut the wage bill. This he has done mostly by loaning out players and I bringing in I guess cheaper alternatives (it would be nice to think that WFC are only paying a small amount of their wages with the Prem clubs covering the majority)

As I said he had to immediately fire fight so to attack him on what he has done so far (which for me has been a pretty good job) is like throwing glass bottles at firemen when they come to put out a house fire!

We're 15th now and with only a tiny chance of still being relegated which is a far better situation than when he took over, as you said yourself he also quickly identified key positions that needed to be sorted out. Luckily Loach was able to come on and do a good job and he managed to cherry pick Williamson who I think has done very well since moving to WFC.

I've said it before I think we can only truly start to judge him next season. If he isn't up to scratch still then then fine have a go but to attack him but lets give him a fair chance shall we. Or shall we ask AB back?

5:59pm Tue 21 Apr 09

I can't believe some of the comments I have read after the Birmingham game. We were given a football lesson and for our Manager to say otherwise is pure delusion. The present Board and Manager will do well next season if they can see that what we need is an old head in midfield. We scream out for someone to put their foot on the ball and think. Did Loach on Saturday not realise that Just hoofing the ball up field was a gift to our opponents. Does he not think that maybe a bit of distribution may pay dividends? Also why are we a feeder club to other Championship teams with our loan signings to them?
