Watford's winless away run continues as Scunthorpe United score 94th minute equaliser

Watford's winless run away from home continues after John Eustace's 91st-minute winner was cancelled out from the penalty spot with the final kick of the game.

The Hornets completely dominated the first half but somehow found themselves a goal down at the break after Gary Hooper scored in the 42nd minute.

Danny Graham equalised in the second period for the first time since netting against United three months ago.

The Hornets' hopes of winning seem to have ended when Tom Cleverley was sent off with less than ten minutes to go but then Eustace popped up to head into the bottom corner in the first minute of injury time.

But Watford's four-month run without a win away from home was extended when a penalty was awarded against Jay DeMerit after a shot from point-blank range hit the defender's arm and Hooper scored the equaliser with the last kick of the game.

Watford kept faith with Graham up top despite the striker not scoring since these two sides met in November and he was looking dangerous early on.

Good hold up play from the former Carlisle United man, from a long ball by Scott Loach, allowed Don Cowie to get a first-time shot away but his effort was wide of the near post.

The two then switched roles soon after Paul Hayes had a shot blocked, as Graham had a header comfortably saved by Joe Murphy.

Tom Cleverley returned to the Watford line-up after missing the last two games with a knee injury and the midfielder had a thunderous half-volley which was heading for the top corner blocked on 12 minutes.

It was all action in the first half hour and except for a late clearance from Martin Taylor and a Michael O'Connor free kick hitting the wall, it was all Watford.

Graham, who was lively up top and working well Helguson and Cowie, had two chances in quick succession.

First he volleyed wide from a Cowie cross and then a flick-on by Helguson, from an Adrian Mariappa cross, saw Graham's volley pushed out for a corner by Murphy.

The home side survived another scare when Taylor rose highest to head the ball back across goal but no one was able to get on the end of it.

Scunthorpe created next to nothing in the first half and after a tame penalty appeal from the home side, Helguson fired over from just inside the area.

Good passing from Watford then earned them a corner which almost led to the opener. Cowie's delivery was flicked on by Taylor and Helguson's volley bounced around the six yard box before Cowie crossed again.

This time Eustace headed the ball back across goal and Graham's header was saved by Murphy.

Watford were completely dominant and, after Helguson had a header hit the top of the bar, the visitors had a strong penalty appeal turned down when Graham was pulled over in the box

The Hornets grip on the game loosened slightly in the final ten minutes of the half and Scunthorpe unbelievably grabbed a goal with three minutes of the half left.

O'Connor picked out the run of Hooper between DeMerit and Mariappa and the striker did well to lift the ball past Loach to make it 1-0.

Watford did not deserve to go into the break a goal behind but they almost found themselves two down soon after the restart when Scunthorpe broke with pace and Woolford had a powerful drive just tipped on to the bar by Loach.

DeMerit glanced a header over from a Cleverley corner but it was the home side who were on top at the beginning of the second half.

Hayes was allowed time to fire over from distance and then Taylor had to block a goal-bound Woolford shot.

But Watford grabbed the goal their first-half display deserved on 64 minutes when Scunthorpe failed to clear their lines and Helguson prodded the ball to Graham in the six yard box and he smashed the ball home.

However, the home side should have regained the lead moments later when three United players were in the six yard box with the ball bouncing around, but Woolford's back heel was tame and easily saved by Loach.

Watford had another penalty appeal turned down when Graham was stopped as he ran towards goal and Loach needed to be at his best to deny Hooper one-on-one, palming his shot wide of the near post.

Lansbury then failed to test the keeper with a 20-yard free kick but the drama really began in the final ten minutes.

Referee David Webb wasted no time in pulling out a red card for Cleverley on 82 minutes after a rash challenge on O'Connor.

But a melee ensued immediately after involving at least 12 players as it seemed Cleverley was punched in the face while on the floor. However, Cliff Byrne only received a yellow card.

So the Hornets faced an uphill battle to win but it seemed Eustace had grabbed the winner from a Jon Harley corner in the 91st minute with a header into the bottom corner.

But just when it seemed the drama was over, in the fourth minute of added time, a powerful shot from eight yards out was adjudged to have hit the arm of DeMerit and Hooper slotted home the penalty.

Well have to see the incidents on TV but very frustrating as it seemed we had most of the game and did well to come back but I guess you just knew with our away form Scunny would nick something.

Shame because we've lost out on mving up a couple of places and a key player for 3 games with Newcastle/Swansea next.

People can talk about the penalty decision but there is a larger pattern to appreciate here. This team cannot defend in a composed manner when the pressure is on at the death. I have lost count of the amount of times we have squandered a lead away from home at the bitter end.

We should be brushing teams like this aside, and to have not won away from home for so long is indicative of a club in decline and a rookie manager out of his depth.

Mackay clearly cannot instill the necessary belief and his tactics must in some way be responsible for this trend of shipping late goals. That said, this is a trend that goes back three seasons, to the dark days of Boofers, and three members of that team are still in the back four: Doyley, Demerrit, and Mariappa.

We need to get in another "pink shirt", somone who can get into the minds of the players because, clearly, part of this problem is a mental one.

I still believe that Mackay will eventually take us down. His comments regarding the play offs underline his own lack of faith in his abilities and clear lack of ambition. I think we will survive this season - just. However next season is already looking like a massive struggle with the likes of Harley, Eustace etc unlikely to be given contract extensions, suggesting that players like Jenkins will be given a more prominent role. And with the loss of Cleverely and Lansbury, can someone as limited as Mackay keep us in the championship? I doubt it.

security word is risk-risk....i couldn't put it better myself.

Please would VoR explain his moronic posting? How can MM be blamed for Cleverley being sent off and the referee giving a harsh penalty against us for the ball hitting the arm of Demerit? Very occasionally VoR makes sense. This time he is being completely idiotic. (And that's the nicest I can describe him).

Just got back from the game. We were the better team for most of the game, though they looked very dangerous on the break. Unlucky to not win, more worrying is the fact Cleverley will be suspended as he is quality. Good performance, away win must be just round the corner. VoR is an idiot, Malky is doing a great job.

Funny how Rick and VOR both want Mackay out...their opinon so fair enough but CLEARLY have different opinons on Boothroyd!

One thinks he is partly to blame for the current mess (true to an extent) and the other seems him as some kind of god (also true for a season..)

I feel that rather sums up a lot of Watford fans...very varied view points.

BTW To think we should just "brush" teams that have beaten some half decent sides at home like Newcastle and given Man City a good game may come across as rather arrogrant although I accept we do need to see the game out like we have at home and we did under Boothroyd.

However I remember on here people complaining loads about the "game management" style emplayed by Aidy so you cannot have it both ways?

Good shout on Tommy Smith but I THINK he is injured.

Just back, we dominated most of game but should have taken more of our chances first half. Draw was ok but always hurts conceding the win so close to the whistle. Can't really understand why Byrne got only a yellow as Cleverley clutched his mouth as he went off clearly having been punched. Still capable of suicide at the back although less obvious.

I still think this is a decent team that has suffered some very poor refereeing decisions on several occasions this year. Like MM says, this has cost us points, possibly as many as another 9, which would make us look like a real threat - which I still think we are. A tight division but a great one. Tough games ahead without Cleverly, but that's how it goes....
Good luck lads.
Also, I wish people would wake up and stop slagging our manager, this club is rebuilding and on a very sensible level. Talk of ex-managers is absolutely pointless, why even go there? The team has great morale - which is more than be said for some 'fans' on this website.

if we are going to talk of new managers whic is a bit silly) then at least make some sensible suggestions. Billy Davis will be free in Oct / Nov when forest sack him, because their team is not in the top 6 of the prem, just like Derby did, so there is a man who can get us promoted and wtbe to hrt when the fans point behind him and then stab him in the back when he turns around to have a look, MM needs to have a chat with Sir Alex, about suitable pubishment for Cleverley's sending off, which drops us in it for 3 important games. Great news that DG scorde. Hopefuly, the new boys wll be fit and get a game now.

Suitable punishment for Cleverley? I've just watched it five times through on T.V and it looks like Cleverley got the ball to me, and then took a huge right hook for his troubles.

Yes, the tackle was strong, but the foot wasn't raised and he got the ball. Possibly a yellow, no way a red, we should be appealing and the Scunny lad needs to have a retro red given, or take up boxing.

Another example of the trash refereeing in the Championship. TC got sent off because of the Scunny players reactions.

I hope after reviewing the video MM will appeal the sending off, and if the League have any balls they'll downgrade it to a yellow or remove all together!

As for the pen, with hands that high, and the interpretation of handball as it is nowadays it would have been given 9 times out of 10, even though there was no intention. That was just really tough luck.

Overall I don't think we are fully getting what we deserve at the moment, and I for one am fully behind MM and what he is trying to do. I have enjoyed the football far more this season.

having watched the game , seen the TV and spoken to our players , many Scunny supporters & their vice chairman plus the referee afterwards.
We dominated the first half and if we could have scored one goal I'm sure another would have followed. Scunthorpe scored against the run of play. Second half was more even , Scunthorpe boosted by this were more of a threat with Scott making a couple of great saves.we equalised ( totally deserved) , but as the game wore on you could see the ref loosing his grip ( Graham was hauled down when clean through..no foul given). Just before the sending off I turned to the guy nesxt to me and said "the ref will show a red in a minute" . Cleverley's challenge was a yellow card , no more ....the ref's red card was out before he blew for a foul...O'Connor should have walked for punching Cleverley ( hopefully video evidence will nail him as it was clear on the TV pics) . The ref had lost it , before then... and his inexperience showed.
We did well to battle on ( Helguson was taken off..he'd been injured earlier and obviously we needed a fit player to make up for the lost man) and deservedly took the lead.
The penalty was a discgrace , it clearly him Demerritt in the face ( it was up like a balloon after the game ) ..the linesman gave a corner . Even if it HAD of hit in on the hand it should never have been a penalty ( remember Everton away in the Premiership !!!!). The ref compounded the insult by booking Loach for kicking the ball into the net after they scored and after he had been flattened by a Scunny player ...outrageous!! . AS soon as we'd kicked off the ref blew.
Spoke as I said to a few SCunny fans plus theiir v-chairman who all agreed that it wasn't a penalty and that it wasn't a sending off ..AND that O'Connor should have walked for punching. I quizzed the referee after ..he said somewhat in an arrogant tone that he thought it was the best game he'd had . HE was too young and inexperience , and had obviously an attitude problem. God help the referreeing in this country .
As for the club and away performances , they have been erratic , but we've had some cr*p decisions go against us ..Peterborough , Barnsley x 2 , and yesterday are just a few ..they say it evens out well we're going to have a hell of a run-in with decisions going our way.
I think we'll be ok......we should pick up enough points to stay up ...and to be honest , most of us would have taken that at the start of the season ... were in the middle of a pack of 13 clubs ...just 6 points from play-off & 6 points from the drop so we are as good or ( as bad) as the majority of the teams , something we may not have hoped for in August.
Have faith .

Good to see Danny back on the scoresheet, we should appeal the red card, O'connor should get a retrospective red, and we should hope we get a bit of luck from the referees for the rest of the season.

Having seen the vid several times of yesterdays game and in particular the poor decision by the ref it looked as though poor old Jay got it face to arm. The point to make was that the lino who was in a better position gave a corner. The ref was obstructed from view and one feels he gave it out of spite!
We had a good call first half when Danny was clearly fouled by Byrne only for Webb to wave away the protests. I understand that Byrne admitted it should of been a pen after the game!
I also would like to think that 1 or 2 of our armchair critics on here might just occasionally, go to our games cos it seems as though there very quick after the whistle to make crass, whose to blame coments that would be better served in the Daily Star/Sun.

The manager is not blameless for such a poor away record, you are quite correct.
However, to say he is out of his depth is of course laughable, wouldn't you agree?
14th position with games in hand on all of the teams above us does in fact show that MM is clearly capable at this level. God only knows what he'd achieve with some decent money to buy good quality players.

I dont normally go in for name calling about the other posters on this site, but Rick Holden and VoR you are both week in week out posting negative comments about the team and the management team. And I think you are both idiots for it! I dont pretend to even begin to know whats going on behind the scenes at the club regarding finances and ownership ect, but I feel its clear that under the Stewardship of Ashton and Simpson this club was badly run living outside of our financial means, and very nearly paying the ultimate price for it over the Christmas. What we need now is a period of austerity, and stable management, which is what we are getting under the current manager and board.
As for the results on the pitch, anything above the bottom four for me is a great end to the season. We've been playing some very good football this season, and have had some very good results for it, our away form may not be good, but how many teams win week in week out away from home? Not many I'll wager. with regard to yesterdays result, 2-2 is a good result at Scuny, especially when you consider they've turned their ground into a bit of a fortress, even beating Newcastle there. wasnt able to go to the game coz of work, but I had several friends in the crowd, and they said we played well, and was denied a result by the ref. Graham had two penalty shouts for being taken down by the last man, and the guys Cleverly took out (silly boy) should have been red carded to for smacking Tom in the face! Not to mention the fact the penalty against DeMerit was soft, as Malkey has stated publicly that the ball hit Jay in the face, not the hand, and has got a beautiful shiner as a result. Our league position is not at all hopeless, midtable, still in touch with the play-off's and depending on who's above us up to three games in hand. Its not quite the same as having those games played, and the points on the board, but its no where near as bad you keep seeming to think we are in. And I hope I speak for many Watford fans, of which I'm dubious if you two are, when I say, I'd rather have the season we've been having so far, than say the season QPR or Portsmouth have had. Can you two please remove you heads from your rectums, take a breath of fresh air, and please for God sake realize we're having a good season! COME ON YOU HORNS!!!

Cleverley is without doubt the most fouled player in the whole of the football league and gets no protection from the officials.

If its true that these things even themselves out over the course of a season then by rights we should get six or seven penalties on Saturday.
