Cardiff City record flattering 3-1 win over battling Watford

Defensive mistakes cost Watford dearly as they lost 3-1 to promotion-chasing Cardiff City this afternoon.

The Hornets went 1-0 down after seven minutes through an excellently-taken Ross McCormack goal but the visitors were the much better side for the remainder of the first half and created a number of good chances.

Cardiff were not at their creative best but defensive mistakes allowed Peter Whittingham and Chris Burke to make it 3-0 in the second half, before Heidar Helguson grabbed a cracking consolation goal in injury time.

Watford, who have not won on the road since mid-October, suffered a blow before kick off as Henri Lansbury and captain Jay DeMerit were ruled out with hip and back problems respectively.

And their chances of beating the promotion-chasers took another set back within seven minutes as a well-worked corner routine saw McCormack volley powerfully into the bottom corner from 12 yards.

However, Watford responded well and were the better side for much of the first half.

Will Hoskins, who scored the winner on Tuesday night, had an overhead kick go narrowly over the bar from eight yards out soon after Cardiff's opener.

Minutes later Heidar Helguson had a header from close range blocked and from the subsequent corner, Martin Taylor hit the bar with a header and the ball was almost bundled home by Hoskins, but David Marshall saved.

Eustace and Helguson spurned half chances before the on loan QPR striker almost bundled home the equaliser in the 42nd minute.

Good hold up play from Hoskins put Don Cowie through wide right and his low cross was missed by Marshall and Helguson would have been left with the simplest of finishes had Gavin Rae not slid in and cleared two yards from his own goal line.

Tom Cleverley struck a free kick straight at Marshall in first-half injury time but the Hornets were unfortunate to go into the break a goal down.

Whittingham started the second half by firing comfortably over and after a couple of half chances went wide from Helguson and Cowie, he made the win safe on 63 minutes.

Poor marking from Lee Hodson allowed Whittingham to head almost unchallenged into the bottom corner from close range.

Watford were not being overrun but struggled to create chances in the second half and Cardiff were clinical with the few they created.

Minutes after Loach made a super stop to deny a Bothroyd header, Cardiff broke quickly and poor defending once more allowed the home side to snatch a third with 12 minutes remaining.

Burke dribbled from his own half and after beating Hodson and receiving a lucky break after a challenge from Lloyd Doyley in the box, the winger slid the ball underneath Loach from a tight angle.

Watford continued to search for a way back into the game but struggled to take advantage of the possession and good positions they had as the game came to a close.

However, they did grab the goal their performance deserved in injury time as McGinn chipped the ball into the box, Cleverley flicked it on with his head and Helguson volleyed into the top corner from 18 yards out.

Watford: Loach; Hodson, Mariappa, Taylor, Doyley; Cleverley, Eustace, Jenkins (McGinn 53), Cowie (Buckley 67); Hoskins (Graham 63), Helguson.

Subs not used: Lee, Bennett, Harley, Bryan.

Cardiff City: Marshall; Rae, Gyepes, Blake, Kennedy (Capaldi 46); Whittingham, McPhail, Quinn, Burke; McCormack (Chopra 86), Bothroyd (Feeney 81).

So yet another away defeat ,we give another early goal away ,rally a bit and play better for rest of half then unfortuntley half time arrives and the management team get to influence things again and we come out and do nothing ,then despite asking for subs to be made earleir in games for weeks and bringing on strikers and nothing happening he goes from one extreme to the other and takes off a goalscorer in Hoskins ! within seconds we concede AGAIN and then again ,lost count of away defeats now at least no wins in 12 we cannot even get a draw !! ,Now off to Sheff Weds for another defeat then Middlesborough and palace at home ,we are going down if not very very careful MM not up to it for me ,Gary Johnson anyone too many years at Bristol city but experienced manager that is not available very often ARE our board up to it and prepared to make changes NO CHANCE IN MY BOOK as nobody in real control ,so we will have a Div 1 club next season ,after telling us in press release this week we need to sell players followed by then asking us to renew season tickets and hoping for 10k of sales again ,i know only watford could release these two statements in the same week ! ,i just despair !!!

Mackay's persitence with youth is costing the club dear. There was no need for Hodson to be involved. Harley could have played at left back and Doyley at right back.

At any other club such a dire run of results would have ended in a managerial change. Since that is not going to happen, the board must then support the current managerial set up by releasing the necessary funds to enable the club to go into the emergency loan window. More experience at the back is needed and quickly!!!!

Mr Taylor, you are chairman now, firm action is needed, not silly comments about how the place feels like the "old Watford".

We are heading for League 1 clappers so WAKE UP!!!!

Good call, Johnson would be the ideal candidate. He has a Watford background, and good knowledge of the Championship. We will achieve nothing under Mackay except relegation.

However a certain GT will not do what is required so....

Taylor out!!!! Mackay out!!!!!

Don't care about todays result, our big game is now Wednesday, must win that one.Plymouth and Palace at home are "must wins".Win those three plus one more and we should be ok,wouldn't bet my house on it though!!!
Listened to the game on 3 counties and we seemed to be on top for the first half and most of the second but just couldn't put the ball in the net.Cleverley is far better when Lansbury plays, would like to see Doyley at right back and Travner(if he's still at Watford) at left back.Hopefully JD and HL are fit for Wednesdays game
Sheff Wed 1-2 Watford (got Ipswich score correct...lol)

Disappointing result, but was always going to be a tough game, although it sounds like we gave a good account of ourselves after letting in that early goal and could've easily got something from the game. The defensive lapses need to be sorted, but we should take away the positive from today and produce a big performance on Wednesday night, MM knows what is required. There is no sensible option other than to stick with him and the team.

Does anyone on here really think that Watford have the funds to pay off the current team? Does anyone really think they have the funds to then appoint Gary Johnson. Does anyone really think he would then want to join a club who are constantly flirting with administration, have no money to spend and rely mostly on young players coming through and inventive loan signings? If your answer is yes to all three Tricky Rick then why don't you just suggest that we sign Rooney too and be done with it. That will help us avoid relegation too.

MM will stay till the end of the season. We cannot afford to pay him off and who would want the job anyway? He needs help, however. If GT is too busy then perhaps a former player might be willing to assist. Sean Dyche is not the answer so let's pay him off now. Team selection is poor, tactics are poor, substitutions are poor and, for all I know, training may be poor too. MM needs help - otherwise we will be relegated. I know we all hate Brendan Rodgers but he had more to offer than MM. Yet Reading sacked him. However, look at the team BR passed on to his successor. And, remember, we came 13th under him last year. MM hasn't a clue. Please, someone, help him get out of the dreadful mess left, mainly, by Aidy Boothroyd. Overpaid players and a bankrupt club. VoR - over to you, to defend your hero.

I regularly look at the comments posted by other supposed Watford fans and it never ceases to amaze me how negative and critical and ill-informed some people can be. Get behind the team, the manager and stop whinging or else f*ck off. As regards the money situation, if you've got £10 in your wallet you can't go into Tescos and spend £30 - and it's the same with a football club. Final point, I actually went to the game today (although I guess from the timings of other postings perhaps some others didn't - too busy typing sh*te and drivel into their laptops - presumably whilst alone in their bedrooms). We did OK today. The scoreline didn't justify the balance of play or the chances created by both sides. If Cardiff are a barometer of the standard required to reach the play-offs then we're not a million miles off. So, get behind the team and if we do go down (and I think it's unlikely), then we will bounce back

Can anybody out there really say they expected us to get a result at Cardiff today! I certainly didn't expect an away win however i was hoping for at least a point.

With the same shots on target stats as Cardiff, it looks to me like poor defensive mistakes and spurred chances have cost us the game. Can anybody see a pattern forming here? Wasteful Watford seems to be a common theme.

Lets face some facts. We can't afford to sack MM or replace our him. GT has openly said we need sell players to stay afloat next season and MM doesn't want to have relegation on his CV. Season ticket prices have had to up. These are hard times as a Watford FC fan and i can see next season being no different with a smaller squad and no funds.

We all want the best for our beloved club and yes frustration does set in we things don't go our way. But we need to stand by our team in times like this and support them. We are not glory hunters that only support our team when we win. So lets get behind MM and the team. Should MM get us relegated then it was meant to be but true fans should be there supporting WFC in League 1 or the promised land.

Its fight or flight for us as WFC fans. Get behind the team and support them or do one.

The journey under sir A.B was a great deal better wasn't it?
I honestly believe it would be better to get relegated so we can start playing our youngsters and not relying (too heavily) on a full allocation of loans, it serves to paper over cracks and gives a false position to where the club is at.
I was right with A.B, I was right with the Russos, I was right with BR after the Brum game and it looks like I will probably be proved right regarding MM.

Eustace had a great game v Ipswich and takes more control over midfield than Jenkins ever has. AB always crap?? Hmm, don't remember him being too crap when we spanked Leeds in Cardiff! Although he is not the great personality some people think he was. He is old news anyway.

I am amazed at the bo**ocks spouted by a bunch of armchair pundits who have nothing else to do on a sunday evening. Obviously, never been to a game and so quick to run down the team and MM. We were very unlucky should have had a couple more goals. It did not help losing two key players before the KO. Sorry, we dont deserve to have the management we have but we certainly dont need brain dead support who post juvenile "boys world" comments. Grow up boys and get to a game, it may surprise you. Retard's right, I'm afraid to say, I dont want us lot to go down but it looks like it is the only way we're going to get sorted.

Who said we can't afford to sack MM? How much will it cost to sack him? Anyone know? And how much will it cost us not being in the Championship? it'll cost us a bucket load more than sacking MM, so why dont we just boot him and his bunch of numpties out at the same time.

As for the players, they should be paid on their performances, not the fact that they're happy to turn up and lose every week.

I don't care for you happy clappers who think we should back the team come what may. If the management are hopeless, then I will continue to to show my displeasure. if I was getting paid as much as they are, I'd be embarrassed to go and collect my pay cheque every week.

As for the players, why should I support them when most or all of them blatantly don't give two hoots about what it means to play for the club. There's no desire and no passion there. They deserve nowt but a kick in the proverbials until they start earning their excessive wages.

'There was only one Scully', I have been to more Watford games than you've nicked cars - open your eyes and see what's going on at the club.

Solihull Horn, use your Clubcard points if you havent got the cash to shop in Tesco.

And finally, MM, do the decent thing and leave.

You seem ready to insult other posters on here you don't know so i've felt free to do the same! People like you sum up why are home support is so devoid of passion with idiots ready to get on the teams back as soon as someone miss hits a pass. The majority of fans on this site made the point that Hodson should not play even in an
crisis.I still cannot fathom his pathetic attempt against Whittingham for Goal 2 and the ease in which the scorer ran past him for goal 3. His supporters claim his youth and inexperience as his defence. He is totally out of his depth and in three years time the same will apply!

BR was good for us, Malky has a real tough job no good owned players and we have to scrap for anything we want. The Russos were pretty transparent I am not sure we will say the same of GT and Winter when they depart. As for Aidy took over at Colchester and they might just slip out of the play offs undoing all of Lamberts good work.

Then there is your EGO misplaced just like your friend Boy Blunder need we say anymore other than lets get behind the team until the end of the season

Went to game yesterday and i have to admit that is worst away performance i have seen for a while. To start with Great Ground and walking to the ground they were selling t shirts with ridsdales face and asking the question where the money has gone??
Cardiff have not been in the prem twice and have a expensive line up of players all on good money. their attendance isnt much more than ours and they have all four sides of the pitch.

they ask the question where the money has gone but they have a new ground? we dont even ask where our money have gone and all we have are some flats on every edge of our building site of a ground. Ninian park being knocked down looked more like our place. The fans were the quietest i have ever heard on a away game.

now the play. Doyley is still funny even though we are going down with poor defensive dispalys the fans still find him funny?? mariappa is a man lost and MM inspired his confidence by not giving him the armband MM must be a motivational genius. Hodson was a change fans wanted and now they turn on him after one game. jenkins did nothing eustace did less. buckley looked good coming on but by then was all too late.

now the MM scottish biased players Don Cowie. How he gets in the team shocks me and mcginn if he is the future then we might as well set fire to the east stand and try and claim some compo as he is not a player worthy of div 2. Helguson should come on as sub and start with hoskins and graham. MM management genius was to take hoskins off instead and cardiff scored two minutes afterwards.

I notice with out play that when in final third a ball behind the defence is never on goal its always to the wings. and as we have no wingers its always a striker going out wide. a cross comes in with one striker and always is cleared. but then with two defenders a coaches you cant expect much. but then again we are poor in defence as well??? wednesday is huge if we dont get anything more than a win he has to go.

gayr johnson is a must either now or start of next season

was at the game yesterday. just abt the same performance as at derby.Defense so fragile goals are always going to be scored.so little invention up front it is difficult imagining where the goals will come from. for me the two slight encouragements were hoskins, I can only hope it was an injury that got him taken off, and will buckley who shock of all shocks had a yellow shirt on and still tried to beat some opponents. if he does not start the next home game i think there is no hope. llloyd d should not be playing at left back. it is impossible for the team to attack downthat side of the pitch. everytime he gets the ball he has to check back and get the ball on his right foot.it is so bad i am only surprised he can actually stand up on his left foot. put him over the other side please.

Although things are bad at the moment, we won't go down. P'boro and Plymouth are gonners and either CP or Scunthorpe will follow. Leaves us wide open for relegation next season when we won't have Cleverly/Landsbuy. Can't see major movements player wise in the summer as we have no assets left to sell bar Loach. I for one did not expect to get anything out of the game yesterday as Cardiff are a very good side. I also feel a sense of perspective is required here. Last season we finished 13th with BR, allthough we were battling relegation last season too. We then lost him to Reading (some say a good thing, others bad - I'm undecided) and then sold Mike Williamson, Tommy Smith, Lee Williamson, Jobi McAnuff & Tamás Priskin and Grzegorz Rasiak's loan period ended. All these players are decent championship players and we replaced them with youth as we cannot afford any better. This is soley down to Ashton/Simpson and Boothroyd spending beyond our means and we're paying the price for it now. We have a 3rd world stadium and a playing staff that cannot cut it at this level. I don't agree with getting rid of Malky but he needs help. If Malky goes - who next? What sane manager would want to come to a club in the state we're in?

whilst I freely admit that if things carry on as they are we are almost certain to go down, whyever do people think Gary Johnson could be our saviour?
He has been shown the door at Bristol City (who we have taken 4 points off) after a poor run of results similar to ours, they were a shambles against us a few weeks ago & to top it all, I thought we were the kings of conceding late goals, but just look at the amount of points they have lost conceding even later ones (also been thrashed at home 0-6 and 2-5!).
I don't know what the answer is - but it is not him!!

Was as yesterday's game, and we played well against one of the better teams in the division.
Should have been at least 3-1 up at half time with the chances created, possibly even more!
The turning point for me was taking off the impressive Jenkins for the totally ineffective McGinn. Midfield was lost at this point, and Cardiff went on to win quite comfortably.
Terrible decisionto bring back Hodson instead of the under-used Harley.
He was at fault with the second and third goal, and possibly the first as well!
As for the Gary Johnson argument. Why not offer him a short term contract to assist the clue-less MM, or even Curbishley (as with Dowie at Hull). MM certainly needs some help instead of the useless Dyche!

As I live in Crete the last match I attended was home to QPR and although we won I thought we did not look great then. I do not understand how and why we have lost most of our matches since that evening against QPR and gone from the play-offs to our present position, What has changed?

I thought MM was not the best available choice at the time Perhaps Andy Hessenthaler or peter Taylor but what do I know about football! I was hoping to be proved wrong. If we take the position off the pitch in to account and we are unable to change the manager now perhaps GT could spend five minutes with him and give him advice, perhaps he does. I do feel rather pessimistic as we appear to be a club with no ideas or bad ideas on the pitch.

Some of you lot are unbelievable. You are even blaming 2 goals on the fact MM took Hoskins off. As if he would have stopped them!!!!

Let's face it, some of you will never be satisfied with MM but you can't clame him for every little thing that goes wrong.

Also, well said SimonW about Gary Johnson. Who says he would save us when he has just been sacked by a club in a similar position. Just because he has been at Watford previously does not give him some super power to make things right. Harry Bassett has a history with Watford but we wouldn't want him.

Support the team! COYH!!!!

Fairwater where were you sitting?

I know the two stadiums look similar but i think you were in the wrong one. are you also going to say we sold out our allocation?

VoR states you reap what you sow.

In that case those of you who think we can afford to sack MM and pay for a replacement will be reaping a club in administration very soon.

Didn't see or hear much of the game but saw some action on Sky this morning.

Seemed like the usual story away from home.

Give away another early goal via a set play then battle back for a whille to miss some decent chances.

Go in at half time maybe with some hope but all that is lost quickly with more sloppy defending.

Good strike by H..shame that didn't happen when it mattered.

Mackay won't be sacked BTW...

Regular posters on here will know my views on the clubs management at the moment so i won't go on about them again! A few of things though;1) we as fans and MM in particular have got to stop this "we should have" done this, scored this, had this penalty etc, the fact is we didn't and its not a coincidence! 2) MM wont go anytime soon and if he does im not convinced Gary Johnson would do much better. 3) We wont go down this season,Posh and Plymouth have gone and i believe one of Scunny, Sheff. Wed, Palace will join them.
