Watford suffer fourth straight loss following injury-time goal at Hull City

Watford are now in the Championship's bottom three after an injury-time strike from Robert Koren condemned them to a fourth straight defeat following a 3-2 loss at Hull City.

The Hornets had looked likely to end their losing run despite letting the lead slip on two occasions at the KC Stadium but a point was taken away from them in the fourth minute of time added on when the Slovenian midfielder fired in from the edge of the area.

The visitors had gone into the game at risk of being the first Watford side to fail to score in four successive league games since April 1997 but at least that spectre was banished in the 36th minute when James Chester turned a Mark Yeates free-kick into his own net.

Although Matty Fryatt equalised six minutes into the second half, the Hornets were soon back in the lead when Chris Iwelumo headed in his first goal for the club, with Yeates again the supplier.

The Hornets were again pegged back though, with Aaron Mclean converting from close range but they still looked on course to take a point until the dramatic conclusion.

Sean Dyche made two changes to the side that suffered a third straight defeat at Leicester City in midweek. Having been left out of the starting line-up for the first time this season, Marvin Sordell was restored at the expense of Joe Garner, while Yeates also came back into the line-up in place of injured loan signing Michael Kightly.

Both sides failed to make the most of a corner they each won in the opening three minutes and there was little in the way of goalmouth action until the 11th minute when Robert Brady came inside off the right flank but dragged a tame left-footed effort wide of the near post from 20 yards.

The opening 20 minutes were dull though, but the Hornets were keeping it tight at the back without really threatening when they ventured forward.

The hosts did have the ball in the net four minutes later when Corry Evans finished after Scott Loach had failed to hold on to a Liam Rosenior cross under pressure from Mclean but referee Gary Sutton had already penalised the Tigers striker for a foul.

Loach had to be watchful when Brady swung in a cross moments later but the visitors weren’t too far away with their first chance in the 31st minute when Adrian Mariappa headed Jonathan Hogg’s looping cross from the right narrowly over.

Tempers threatened to spill over three minutes later when Carl Dickinson and Brady got involved in a tangle on the touchline and after the Hornets’ left-back had angrily grabbed his opponent, both players were yellow carded.

The visitors thought they had taken the lead soon after when Troy Deeney’s miscued shot across goal was turned in from close range by John Eustace but it was ruled out for offside. Watford didn’t have long to wait though.

In the 36th minute they were awarded a free-kick on the left which was superbly swung in by Yeates and the ball was stabbed past Adriano Basso from inside the six-yard box, ending the Hornets’ three-match search for a goal. Although the stadium announcer gave the goal to Deeney, it was centre-half Chester who applied the decisive touch.

Deeney was involved again in first-half injury-time when he was booked for a late challenge on Rosenior but crucially the visitors were able to take the lead into the break.

Fryatt headed wide from a Tom Cairney corner two minutes after the restart but four minutes later Hull were level with their first on-target attempt of the game.

The move originated after Sordell had lost possession just inside the City half and the ball was worked to the left where Cairney’s loss cross towards the six-yard box was blocked by the stretching Eustace but the ball broke very kindly for Fryatt to stab past Loach and make it 1-1.

After Loach had made a straightforward stop from a Brady shot, a well-struck low drive from Sordell forced Basso to push the ball round his near post. That corner came to nothing but after the ball had been cleared for a throw, Yeates received it on the right and did very well to beat his man before standing up an inviting cross to the far post where Iwelumo rose to head home his first goal for the Hornets and put them into a 2-1 lead.

It was an advantage that was to last only ten minutes though, as Rosenior was allowed too much space on the right side of the area and his pull back was bundled in by Mclean.

The scorer was booked soon after for a foul on Eustace but Watford nearly went in front for a third time when they found themselves four-on-three from a counter-attack but with options right and left, Yeates went alone and hit a rising right-footed drive that clipped the bar as it went over.

After Jack Hobbs had headed a corner wide, Craig Forsyth was introduced at the expense of Deeney, while Dele Adebola came on for Brady.

Watford had another good opportunity in the 79th minute, again from a Yeates set-piece, but unfortunately for the visitors, Eustace directed a header straight at Basso.

But the Watford skipper was a lucky man with six minutes when, after tangling with Evans tight to the touchline, he appeared to kick out at the Hull midfielder. Although it happened right in front of the fourth official, who the referee then consulted, no action was taken against Eustace.

Sordell made way for Garner with a couple of minutes left but the last laugh went to the hosts in the fourth minute of injury time.

There didn’t seem to be too much on when Koren received the ball around 35 yards but he was allowed to advance before firing a right-footed shot past Loach from the edge of the area to snatch a dramatic victory.

How many times does this happen? We simply are unable to play out the last few minutes without conceding.

Even if we sack Dyche I am not so sure his replacement would be able to turn this round. I think we have only won 6 times in the last season and a half.

Into the bottom three now. What will Bassinni do?

A poor manager but today an unlucky one too. However, let's be honest, with the current set up -owner, board, manager, assistant manager and team, we are simply not good enough to stay up. If only someone would buy out both Bassini and Dyche. This is the only way we would have any chance of survival.

For God's sake,!! There I was laying on my bed listening to the second half on Three Counties contemplating a 2-1 victory when I finally developed narcolepsy whilst listening to the painfull droning of Steve Sherwood. When I woke up we'd lost 3-2.
Watching Watford is painful enough this year but can Three Counties at least find someone that makes listening remotely interesting. I don't think Timmy Mallet is doing a lot !!

Last minute goal and again twice in front and unable to go on and win. How many times have we seen this. Relegation zone yes but are we really surprised after the joke summer signings. The big problem is that we are getting detatched from the half a dozen or so teams above so we need to start winning. As we have only one three times in about 22 games its not looking good. sacking Dyche will not solve the problems. We have a very weak squad the poorest Ive seen for a long time. We are a mid table league one side at best.
I for one will not be watching league one football next season . Watfords attemptied purchase of wiggins from bournemouth in the summer says it all. He went to charlton because he could see us being relegated and them promoted. the crowds are dwindling mr bassini. What are you going to do about it?

Feff says...

One comment to Horns24. Sordell is the only player we have with any real skill. Look how he played when he had Danny Graham alongside him. I think, like the rest of us, he has lost all confidence in his colleagues, and I, for one, don't blame him one iota.

6 wins in 38 odd games, has got to tell even the most die hard fan where we are heading. Sean dyche , whilst i wished him all the best is still part of the old regime. Time now for a fresh voice in the dressing room with fresh ideas. By the way those that keep saying we are punching above our weight, sorry but that is a cop out. Apart from 96- 98 we have been established in the top 2 divisions for 31 years. Many teams have had money in this league and struggled badly in the past. Even leicester are in the bottom half after spending millions. What is needed at Watford on the pitch is good organisation and believe in that we can win this game. Not seeing it at the moment and that has to come from the manager.

Leicester 2 watford nil very confortable for Leicester although dyche says it was a better second half !

today Leicester 0 millwall 3 and out of bottom 3

says all you need to know about motivation and just how bad we are

some say Dyche was loyal, do not sack him, well i am afraid he was off to cardiff make no mistake about that,

No more loyal than the next man but Bassini with a massive prompt from Taylor offered this untried novice guy the managers job to stop him going

I suppose nothing wrong with that and faced with names like Brian Laws being mentioned i admit i too accepted Dyche

However the reason i did was i thought he was appointed because he knew our younger players and would continue to blood them but this time with a few older heads to help.

BUT what has he done, he plays none of them really and has turned our young FIT mobile squad into a lethargic UNFIT old team who run out of steam

I never like to see managers lose there jobs but i am afraid things have to change, attendances will fall and fall, the amount of fans now turning on the manager by the local radio and various media outlets is increasing massiveley, if bassini and Taylor are not listening then they are fools

Peterborough next at home how many fans will actually turn up to watch what i am afraid is probably the worst watford team we have seen for many many years

It is up to the board now, find big money to get better players short term via loan system assuming any team will lend quality to play in this team that just lumps it to a big man upfront devoid of any football being played.

Or do what should have been done in the first place and hire an experienced no nonsense championship aware manager to sort this mess out or we will go down of that there is NO doubt !

Like most of the contributors on here so far today I didnt see the game.
The radio/internet commentary in the main suggested there had been a considerable improvement with both front men working really hard.
Yeates apparently made two good goals and almost scored himself.

The same old repetative depressives on here recite the same old boring mantra, they make no effort to acknowledge even a minimal improvement.
I love the way some of you tell Baz what to do with his money, he was the only person silly enough to buy our run down club.
I think he sold Graham too cheaply but apart from that he has done ok.

I prefer to read what the supporters who actually saw game today have to say rather than reading the same old rubbish from the arm chair moaners.

Holly Vallence doing the American Waltz is better than watching Dyches dimlows, Im either getting old or I've really had it with the football.
Ive even promised the Mrs I'll take her shopping next Saturday. Either that or find someone decorting their house, where I can watch the paint dry, more fun than the farce at the Vic.

Have you all done violently agreeing with yourselves?

Sounded like the usual hopeless inability to close a game and play 90+ minutes.

It's not nice, it's not our only problem, and it might not work, but the Board must act on Dyche - it's the only thing in their gift. This slide to League 1 has to stop.

As far as I'm concerned, the Championship is, and has to be, us punching our weight. With our catchment, lack of support and passion, League 1 would mean being in the wilderness for generations.

well, it aint normally fair in my opinion to sack a manager after just one season or less, but here, its plain for even the most blinkered Dyche follower (if there is one), to concede that he isnt up to the job.....not one little bit. cant defend, cant score (today excepted) and cant produce a decent performance which is even more worrying. The thing that concerns me is the fact I'll bet anything that GT would oppose any notion of dismissing this moron as he is in the "Managers corner". Also, it wouldnt surprise me that the powers that be arent even considering it as its "not the watford way" to sack managers. But, Dyche is clearly out of his depth in taking this position even with - and this may spark laughter and arguments equally - a better team and certainly better squad than last year, bar the three main departures. Relegation for us at this stage would be almost catastrophic but with Dyche its inevitable. A new manager doesnt have to be expensive, theres plenty of managers plying their trade doing great jobs on shoestrings lower down or in scotland, so please Mr Bassini and Taylor - act now to save our club.

doyley is probably a very nice bloke and some may say he is a legend, but you are never going to build anything with a full back who cant pass a ball, mirfin is a 1st division player at best, and mariappa consistently fails to pick up his man, dickinson is an honest fullback who will struggle when he comes up against a pacy winger, and loach, we all know his problems, our best defender is out injured, so taking all that into account, the reason we are conceding goals, is it anything to do with bad luck.? i dont think so, sorry sean, time is up..!!

Sick sick sick sick - sack sack sack sack SD NOW. How much longer will the board back GT's useless appointment? When will GT grow some nads and chop SD out of the manager's position. When will the rest of that club realise that SD isn't a manager? When will Clifftoris realise that the world doesn't revolve around her and that she is, in fact, in a clapping minority?

Identify yourselves at our next home game that's, if you can get of your backsides to go and watch.

'SD OUT, SD OUT, SD OUT, SD OUT'

These have got to be the opening words when the players come out of the tunnel.

WFC have a reputation for being quiet - not at the next home game we won't be.

The winter of discontent and disquiet starts at the next home game.

Mark my words, we will let our voices be heard. This is the end of SD and possibly the board.

Protest at the next home match and, if SD is still there for the next home game, BOYCOTT IT

Cliff46 my comments are as a result of watching a sub standard football team being managed by a sub standard manager and at the moment looking odds on for relegation. I'm sorry but I don't accept the excusses being made after every defeat, whilst I don't expect Watford to win promotion I don't accept bottom 3 and playing crap football.

I am entitled to voice my opinion and have been watching the horns for 37 years, and will support them for the next 37 years. If you are happy with what you have seen this season under the present management then your expectations are very much lower than mine.

In my opinion Dyche has to go but I would be more than happy for him to turn things around, shake your hand and say Cliff you were right.

I sit in the Rookery so I must be a muppet, come to think about it I think I'm Oscar the grouch. He lives in a dustbin I sit in a shithole of a stadium, he's always **** at what's going on around him, so am I, OMG the evidence is overwhelming

Of course even a relatively new supporter like yourself is fully entitled to your opinion.
In fact your post is perfectly reasonable.
Different views is what football is all about.
No one could possibly be happy with recent performances the only difference between you and I is that you think he should go now whereas I think we should look in January.
I accept that could be too late and I might be wrong but then nthere is no guarantee that a new person could do any better.
at it in January.

Fair comment Cliff46 and as an adult I respect other views even if different from my own.

It does not take a genius to work out that buckler and hateclappers are the same person, just look at their repetitive grammatical errors and hideous spelling mistakes! Either that or they were both educated at Westfield!!!!!
Actually we both drink in the venture pub in Hemel and would welcome you to come and give us an English lesson?

Does SD make McTosh look good? did'nt he learn anything from him as his number two...maybe Sd is trying to break his record of 23 games not winning. 4 games down only 19 games to go.

What a wimp you are Buckler!!

A typical keyboard warrior, who decries anyone who disagrees with you!!

Let us see you and the other fat baldy doing your pathetic protest at the Peterboro game!!

That is if we are losing or drawing, you very, very sad person! If we are winning, we will not here a wimp out of you as usual!!!

I used to like Hemel, but I can now understand why so many people leave the place, having to put up with the likes of you!!!

Actually, let us be honest.

You are, or have been:

Weller, Fat Chap. Hemeloyal, Truefanback, Buckler, Istinkverymuch, Iamanidiot, and a few other pseudonyms that do not come readily to mind.

But what a f*rt you are!

Why don't you stay and support Hemel as you said you were going to do at the end of last season.?

Oh, I forgot, you are a big l*ar!!!!
