Watford end losing run with Peterborough United win

Entertaining Hornets beat Posh Entertaining Hornets beat Posh

Vicarage Road was entertained this afternoon as Watford ended their four-game losing streak by beating Peterborugh United 3-2.

It took the Hornets only four minutes to take the lead when Mark Yeates fired home after Prince Buaben had chested down but Lee Frecklington’s fine finish levelled affairs 11 minutes later.

The Hornets were looking good to be in control of the game going into the break after two goals in three minutes – the first a penalty – from Marvin Sordell, only for some poor defending to allow Emile Sinclair to make it 3-2 six minutes before the break.

Sordell wasn’t far away from completing his hat-trick before Peterborough’s second and, but for an incredible Paul Jones save, he would have netted again after the break. But although there were no further goals in the second half, the Hornets were good value for the win after a performance that was a definite step forward.

Sean Dyche was always likely to shuffle his pack again following last week’s fourth straight defeat at Hull City but injuries also forced his hand, leading to four in total.

Lloyd Doyley and skipper John Eustace were sidelined with thigh and back injuries respectively, meaning Lee Hodson made his first start of the season and Buaben came in for his first league start. New loan recruit Nyron Nosworthy replaced David Mirfin at the heart of the defence, while Craig Forsyth returned at the expense of Troy Deeney. The Hornets’ other loan signing this week, Craig Beattie, was not involved due to a tight hamstring.

The match started relatively low key but it was the hosts who got off to the ideal start in the fourth minute.

Following a good spell of possession around the Peterborough area, Jonathan Hogg crossed to the back post, looking for Forsyth. He was beaten to the ball by Gabriel Zakuani, whose attempted clearing header only found Buaben in the heart of the area and the midfielder chested it down for Yeates to hit a first-time half-volley into the ground and past the static Jones for his third of the campaign.

Yeates wasn’t too far away soon after with a well-struck left-footed effort from the edge of the area that fizzed narrowly wide of Jones’ right-hand upright.

The Hornets seemed comfortable at that stage but Posh were to pull level in fine fashion in the 15th minute.

George Boyd got the better of a midfield tussle with Hogg and lifted the ball to the right side of the area where Frecklington brought it down before crashing a right-footed drive past Scott Loach and into the top corner to emphatically make it 1-1.

Having equalised, the visitors were inches away from taking the lead three minutes later when Grant McCann’s 25-yard free-kick beat the dive of Loach, only to rebound off the face of his left-hand post.

Marvin Sordell sent over a fine cross from the right as the Hornets sought to reassert themselves but it was Loach who was the next keeper called into action, diving to his right to push away a left-footed curler from Paul Taylor that threatened to surprise the keeper in the 27th minute.

Zakuani got on the end of the resultant corner but he was unable to get over the header, only for the visitors – or more specifically McCann – to shoot themselves on the foot.

The situation arose when Watford found themselves with a man over down the right and Sordell slipped in Buaben, who broke into the area and was clearly pulled back by the Peterborough skipper and referee Andy D’Urso had no hesitation in pointing to the spot.

Sordell had gone six games without a goal but he confidently sent Jones the wrong way, striking the ball down the middle of the goal to make it 2-1.

And having ended his mini goal drought, the England Under-21 international wasted no time in scoring his second – three minutes later to be precise – rising unmarked in the heart of the area to meet a Yeates free-kick and head it past the stranded Jones to give Watford a 3-1 advantage.

Loach had to get down to save a Frecklington cross-shot soon after but then Sordell nearly netted a Goal of the Season contender that would have given him a seven-minute hat-trick had his rasping left-footed 25-yard effort gone inside, rather than outside, Jones’ left-hand post, with the full-length keeper grasping at thin air.

However, Peterborough are the Championship’s second highest scorers for a reason and they cut the deficit to one again six minutes before the interval when a pass found Sinclair in far too much space on the right side of the area and he calmly fired across Loach to make it 3-2.

Carl Dickinson, who had been found wanting for both of Peterborough’s goals, had a goal-bound header from a corner blocked at the other end and then Sordell fired high and wide as an entertaining first half came to a close.

Buaben was high and wide from distance with the first effort of the second period but it was Loach who was the first keeper into action, diving to his left to keep out a shot from Boyd.

Posh had another chance moments later when Zakuani headed over a free-kick, only for Watford to somehow fail to make it 4-2 in the 55th minute – and the reason they didn’t wasn’t down to any shortcomings on their part.

The home side were awarded a free-kick in a great position 25 yards out and Yeates struck a superb effort, only to see it bounce out off the bar but Sordell looked certain to tuck away the rebound and complete his hat-trick but looked on in almost disbelief as Jones amazingly kept out his first-time volley with an outstretched leg.

Hogg was somewhat unfotunate to pick up the game’s first yellow card in the 65th minute following a challenge with McCann and then Chris Iwelwumo, who was producing his best performance in a Hornets’ shirt to date, couldn’t get enough on a Yeates free-kick from the right.

Some lovely one-touch Hornets passing in and around the Peterborough box ended with a Sordell shot being blocked by Forsyth and then the Posh keeper, under pressure from Iwelumo, held a looping header from the Scot following a free-kick.

Watford though, needed Loach to produce another smart stop with ten minutes remaining when he pushed an angled drive from Taylor around his near post and then Hodson did well to get across when Sinclair was threatening to pull the trigger after jinking into the area.

Iwelumo could have made it safe for the Hornets with four minutes remaining when he pulled off his man to meet a Dickinson cross from the left but he was unable to direct his header on target.

Another chance came and went in the third minute of injury time when Troy Deeney, who had replaced Yeates, broke into the area from the right and, with Sordell providing an option in the middle, he chose to go it alone, forcing Jones to save at his near post.

Watford: Loach; Hodson, Nosworthy, Mariappa, Dickinson; Yeates (Deeney 83), Hogg, Buaben, Forsyth; Iwelumo (Jenkins 89), Sordell. Not used: Mirfin, Garner and Bond.

Peterborough United: Jones; Little, Bennett, Zakuani, Kennedy; Frecklington, McCann (Ball 86), Boyd, Tunnicliffe; Taylor, Sinclair. Not used: Lewis, Rowe, Thompson and Kearns.

Bookings: Hogg for a foul on McCann (65).

Attendance: 15,031.

Fantastic win, and the start of our rise up the table.

Come on you moaners, let's be aving yer!!

Lutondown, Buckler, HornetCobweb, Garstonedl, Saddo Gaddafi, where are you?????

And what about your pathetic little demo, and the anticipated streak!!!!!

What a bunch of losers!!!

Here's to another win over Brighton on Tuesday with our new star Prince Buaben, and the ever impressive Yeates, Sordell and Iwelumo.

Plenty of goals in this lot, plus we still have Beattie and Garner to come in.

Goals galore on the horizon I see in my crystal ball!!!!

Really entertaining game today, it wasn't the best performance in the world but you can tell that Dyce still has the dressing room. Sordell was good today as was Iwellumo, who I have to admit was fantastic. Nosworthy looked good, I'll have to agree with bas on that one. All I'd say is that Dickinson had a bit of a mare. Much needed win still improvements to be made but I'll take that. COYH

You really are a sad little individual aren't you Feffer!!!!

Were you there?

No, I thought not!!

We should have had six, and Sordell should have had a hat-trick at least!!!

This team has loads of goals in them, but the defence is still a problem!

First off who was the differnce today for watford.......Prince was......he made runs he made passes....made sordell make runs so he would get the ball...if Eutace was not injured in training Prince would not have played so Dyche got lucky as today showed you can play hogg and JE together as the both hold and no invention therefore sordell and others go missing. JE now needs to wait his turn. I said give Notworthy his chance and he did well today but he was not up against a lot but done his job. Dico had a mare at left back but its a win......lets see what dyche does now..he must continue withn that team on tuesday if we have chance to get anything out of that. Dyche is not my answer but lets enjoy the win. Real fans like me will give praise when due and also tell you how it is when its not right.

I wonder if Loach spotted the 50 yard throw made by the Posh keeper that set up a great chancefor them in the second half.
If we could only have possesion of the ball on the floor in our opponents half we have the talent to make chances.
Whilst every ball from the back is whacked 4o yards over their heads it is going to be a struggle.
On the plus side enjoyable game and 3 elcome points.

Good win today but like other posters will not get too excited just yet, but have to admit I enjoyed the game.

In my opinion Prince was well worth his place in the starting 11 and it was good to see him getting forward and creating problems for the Peterborough defence, the same could be said of Hodson, who seems more willing to get forward than Doyley.

I will enjoy the three points and congratulate the team and manager on a job well done. More of the same on Tuesday please.

Agree with the comment that "Prince" was the difference - I thought he was outstanding. Hogg has to get a lot of praise for taking Boyd out of the game who for the first twenty minutes looked like he was going to boss it.

Yeates set pieces and all round display were really good but Forsyth seemed completely off the pace and I still find Iwelomu frustrating. I know he was getting pinned alot of the time but on other occasions he selected not to contest 1 v 1 headers which should not happen.

Nosworthy was good but I think Marriapa deserves a mention for a very calm display with a new partner.

For me though Prince was the pick of the bunch

good win but nothing has changed for me, Dyche got lucky as Eustace was injured as Prince would never have started and we can all see now how big a mistake that has been, prince was energetic got forward into there box , even winning a penalty made Hogg look what he is a decent HOLDING midfielder and proving without any doubt Eustace and hogg should not play together

If prince is dropped Tuesday for eustace then we might as well pack up and go home as at last we had energy in our midfield and balls were PASSED to our forwards instead of lumped forward and guess what we scored goals !

well done to Hodson too good solid performance as was nosworthy and best iwelumo has played , great distribution too from yates .

As for our left side in dickinson and forsyth the less said the better ! if dickinson played and concentrated as well as he punches the air to the fans he would be a hell of player !!

Tuesday will be a different game Buckley vs dickinson ouch !

Not back home particularly quickly as a few celebratory beers are extremely important. Great performance today, defensive lapses on the left, but what the hell, for once we got the goals first. Thanks for a good afternoon Watford, even the long M25 drive home couldn't ruin it for me.
Thought Noseworthy was good and Mariappa outstanding. Easily Ewelumo's best game.
Good to see Hodson play well having been out of the first team for so long.

The Prince was very good and brought a new dimension to the team, he worked well with Hogg.
As much as I like John Eustace I don't think he should go straight back not the team.
The left side worries me however, Forsyth doesn't cover as well as he should and while Dickinson has lots of the attributes supporters like, good players seem to beat him too easily.
He is better than Lloyd when going forward but defensively I prefer Lloyd at left back--- I expect I will get a bit of stick for that opinion.
If Buckley plays as we know he can Dickinson could have problems on Tuesday, on the other hand if Kightly is fit for that game and replaces Forsyth we could be a real handfull.
Well done Sean, I thought he was brave to put Noseworthy straight in and to his credit it paid off.

Clearly a vital win and an important 3 points.
Lets see now if this can be built upon and some progress be made.

well we got the passion in the performance. exciting game.going to be hairy ride though. nice to see quite a few of sd's signings doing well...yeates, prince (looks like a find), iwelumo (commitment). the team plays too direct for my liking but think it will be good enough for this division this year.

Still convinced that SD is not the man for the job and my opinion hasn't changed from the day he was appointed. IMHO, a capable owner/ceo would take the bull by the horns now and make a significant change.

Agreed SA I think Dyche stumbled across this selection and his hand was forced rather than inspired
It's not a case of doom mongering but we are 4th from bottom, won two at home and a team half full of layers that aren't ours.
Tuesday will be a real test of where we are and if he has the guts to keep with the prince

Every Watford player had a good game yesterday and deserved a "seven" at least!

Top of the pile by a distance was the Mighty Prince, with Nosworthy, Mapps, Yeates, Sordell and iwelumo all not far behind.

Dicko was left stranded for both goals, bit where on earth was Forsyth to help out?

Forsyth seems to be the weak link, and will surely make way for either Kightly or Eustace on Tuesday.

I am not a fan of Hodson, and was amazed that he got the nod ahead of Thommo, but fair play to the lad, he had a good game and deserves to retain his place against Brighton.

And well done to SD for putting Hogg on their creative midfeild star Boyd. His threat was eliminated in the second half, after tearing us apart before the break!

And we still have Beattie and Garner as back up! Amazing. We have goals galore in this squad now, as we return to the "Watford Way", i.e. lots of goals up front, but a leaky defence!

Well done SD all round, and see you in the New Year as we continue our rise up the table!

Merry Xmas to Sean and the boys.

By my reckoning we had just one "loanee" playing yesterday, not half the team!!

I know your maths is shocking, but your eyesight must be even worse!!!!

I knew if we waited long enough our Prince would come, but where was Dickinson for both of their goals ??

Where was Forsyth to provide some cover and assistance?

Just watch who is left out on Tuesday if either Kightly or Eustace is fit?

Dicko??? No chance!!!!!!!!!!

ave to admit I was unsure about Nosworthy especially with his lack of match fitness but he was man of the match for me. He covered for Hodson excellently, he gave Loach more confidence. Think people blaming Dickinson is harsh - whilst Mariappa is good individually he does not have good team positioning and basically did not provide correct cover for Dickinson and that was where the gap was for them to score. Bauben was excellent along side Hogg and can't see how he can be dropped if Eustace is fit. Whilst I think Iwelumo is a long way short of being of being agood acquisition at the moment I definitely think his aerial presence made a difference and gave our midfield more ime to play. Yeates whilst he is a good dead ball merchant does not seem to be able or want to take players on and is not much good in defending. Spent most of his time telling people where to go rather than getting stuck in himself. Exciting match and we held on well in the second half. Please please please can we have more of the same on Tuesday night.

Thought I'd add a word of praise for the oft pilloried SD. Dickinson got lost thrice in the first half and two of those occasions led to Posh goals. No-one sitting near me thought that we would keep a clean sheet in the second half.

But SD got Forsythe sitting deeper to support Dickinson and the left side problem disappeared.

Credit where it is due !

Ticket office managed to sell my seat along with the other 4 people I sit with. Little bit late to the ground so force to sit elsewhere. not the first time this has happened but it didn't ruin a good day.
Eustace being injured helped SD and thankfully played The Prince rather than Jenkins which made us a far more balanced side. Hogg had his best game for a while simply as he was asked to do what he's good at and that's a defensive midfielder. Please don't revert back to Hogg and Eustace Tuesday. No Doyley is always a good thing but suprised Thompson didn't play as he's been involved at Brentford for the last couple of months but happy Hodson played.
We looked dangerous going forward and the delivery from Yeates was excellent all afternoon. The second half I was actually more pleased with as we nullified Peterborough going forward and they never really looked like scoring where as I thought we did.
Make no mistake this is only one result but we have to start somewhere.
Very impressed with Nosworthy and just shows that you can't judge a player having only seen him once or twice. Very useful signing while Tiny is injured and means we don't have to rush him back.
If I had to look at a negative then the left hand side wasn't great. Not sure what Forsyth (could Beattie or Kightly there if fit) play was doing for the second goal as Dickinson was pulled in to the middle and he just stood on the edge of the penalty area looking at his man standing waiting for the ball in the box. Not Dickinson's greatest game but bearing in mind he's one of the few successes this season the bloke who got up in the middle of the Lower Rous and gave him a load of verbal was totally out of order. If everybody played with his passion we might not be where we are. I do admit though that he didn't have a great first half.
Everybody else deserves praise for a great team effort and lets hope for more on Tuesday.
COYGB

I nearly fainted at your grudging praise!! I live in West Watford, and it takes me less than five mins to get home you saddo!!!!!!
go away nonce us watford fans have got a win for once Not even a nonce like you will spoil my evening
I thought Watford winning would spoil your evening!!! It certainly wrecked your pathetic demo, and also wrecked the celebrations of Buckler, Lutondown, HornetCobweb and the rest of your ugly mob!! I hear you are planning your next demo at the your meeting at Kenilworth Road tomorrow!! How sad!!!!!!!!
Alrigh Welovebas - if you read my previous post you will note that i did state that i thought we would draw 2-2

In any event, we should not be conceding two goals at home to an average side like peterborough.

However, 3 points is 3 points and I will take that all day. Important to let the momentum roll over until tomorrow nights game which is going to be a lot tougher!

BTW - I was never involved in the supposed "protest" nor would I involve myself in such goings on.

I still think that Sean Dyche leaves a lot to be desired and I still dont think that he is the right man for the job. My opinion of you is still the same as well.

I will be sitting in the same seat tomorrow as I have been for the last 14 years.

You are nothing but a deluded clapper!
