Watford beat Bradford City to reach round four of FA Cup

Hornets hit four in FA Cup win Hornets hit four in FA Cup win

Watford are safely through to the fourth round of the FA Cup after beating League Two Bradford City 4-2 at Vicarage Road.

The Hornets got off to the ideal start when Troy Deeney headed them in front inside three minutes but the visitors might have sensed they could pull off a shock after James Hanson equalised five minutes later.

However, the hosts didn’t let that setback affect them and gradually began to take charge before Marvin Sordell took his tally for the season into double figures with his side’s second shortly before the break.

Two goals in three second-half minutes from Craig Forsyth – the second a fine strike following great work by John Eustace – effectively confirmed their place in tomorrow’s draw, although they did make a bit awkward for themselves at the end after Nahki Wells netted a consolation.

Sean Dyche was always going to have to make two changes following Scott Loach’s suspension and the end of Michael Kightly’s loan but in the end he opted for four after Nyron Nosworthy was given clearance to play by Sunderland before his loan spell ends tomorrow.

Jonathan Bond came in for his first senior start in goal, while Kightly’s place went to Forsyth, who returned for his first outing since the beginning of November. John Eustace was also back as captain, with Prince Buaben dropping to the bench, but the most significant inclusion in historic terms was Lee Hodson making way for Lloyd Doyley, who became only the 12th player to make 350 appearances for the Hornets.

Watford’s bench was strong and Adam Thompson made it for the first time this season, as did Tom James, who was in a Hornets matchday squad for the first time.

The hosts almost had a chance inside two minutes when, following a mini game of head tennis after a Mark Yeates free-kick, Forsyth nodded the ball through to Deeney just outside the six-yard box but his goal-bound effort was blocked. But the former Walsall man was not to be denied moments later.

Watford kept the attack going and Sordell received the ball wide on the left and played over a fine cross for the unmarked Deeney to head down and inside Jon McLaughlin’s left-hand post and get his side off to the ideal start.

That should have been the platform for the Hornets to kick on in the early stages but within five minutes Bradford were level.

The home side failed to really get to grips with the situation following a throw-in from the left, allowing Ricky Ravenhill to fire in a shot from the edge of the area that was blocked but fell ideally for Hanson, who took one touch before slamming the ball into the roof of Bond’s net to make it 1-1.

Watford gradually began to get back on top after that setback but they didn’t create another opening until the 20th minute when Eustace tested McLaughlin with a fine left-footed volley from outside of the right angle of the area after the Bantams had failed to properly clear a Jonathan Hogg ball.

McLaughlin made a more comfortable save four minutes later from Deeney’s header after Yeates had flicked on a lofted cross from Sordell, who was catching the eye with his movement in the channels.

Another Hornets chance came and went in the 32nd minute when Yeates was played in on the by-line to the left of goal and found Deeney in the six-yard box but the striker was unable to get the ball out of his feet quick enough to get in an effort.

Ravenhill picked up the game’s first yellow card moments later after catching Eustace full in the face with a raised boot but then the Bantams had a chance, with Hanson heading over the top after Bond had been unable to get to a corner.

Watford responded, with Deeney forcing McLaughlin to parry away his scuffed shot before the keeper had to tip over Yeates’ clipped effort from the right side of the area.

But the Hornets did go back in front five minutes before the interval when Yeates found Sordell in space on the right side of the area and he jinked past a challenge before smartly prodding in his tenth of the campaign to make it 2-1.

Deeney blotted his copybook by picking up a yellow card in first-half injury-time but the hosts went into the break deserving of their lead.

Eustace, who had gone off early at the end of the first half to get more treatment to the head wound that was continuing to pour blood, came out for the second period sporting a large bandage on his head.

And it was his side who continued where they left off before the break, with Yeates doing well on the right to get over a cross but Forsyth was unable to direct the bouncing ball on target with his head.

The visitors asked a few attacking questions of their own at the start of the second half, without creating too much, and it was their opponents who had the next opening, with Yeates placing a shot wide of the near post from around 20 yards after being played in by Eustace.

But Watford effectively made the game safe in the 56th minute when they scored their third.

Again Sordell was involved, with a deep cross from the right which McLaughlin could only help on to Deeney on the left side of the area. He came inside before unselfishly finding Yeates, who in turn laid the ball off to Forsyth for the simplest of close-range finishes.

Not content with scoring once, Forsyth doubled his tally with a cracking first-time strike from the left edge of the area three minutes later but a lot of the credit for the goal went to Eustace, who, having won two important defensive headers, led the charge out on the counter attack and set up his team-mate for the goal with a fine pass.

Dyche decided to change his front two with 20 minutes left, bringing on Chris Iwelumo and Joe Garner for Sordell and Deeney.

Watford thought they’d scored a fifth five minutes later when Yeates blasted home after Iwelumo had swung and missed at a Garner cross but the flag was already up for offside.

Bradford mustered only their second on-target attempt of the afternoon when a corner from the left rather Hanson in the six-yard box and Bond was able to safely drop on the ball.

There was a moment to remember for James with four minutes remaining when he came on for his Hornets debut in place of Forsyth.

Bradford were allowed to score a second two minutes before the end of normal time when sloppy marking allowed Wells to get on the end of an in-swinging ball from the right and steer it right footed past Bond.

And Wells thought he’d set up a nervous last couple of minutes for the hosts when he beat Bond again in the first minute of injury time but, fortunately for the hosts, the offside flag was raised.

Scoring 4 is good but letting in 2 (nearly 3) against a team as poor as Bradford is not. We need Hodson and, with Nosworthy probably returning to Sunderland, we need a centre half on loan. Congratulation to Doyley for reaching his 350th game but, please, now stay on the bench.

Stopped playing after the subs came on but job was done by then. 9,000 there today and 1.5K must have been Bradford. You will all be coming if we draw a top half prem side.. frustrating

agreed, fair play to all that went but those who never....
A decent win but Bradford are poor,
Doyleys day has drawn in, he is as always of great heart but we need more.

Game died as soon as subs came on.Glad we picked a decent team for this game to keep the momentum going.
Bond had a tidy game and although I thought he might had done a bit better for the second goal he only came out when he knew he could get the ball and seemed quite composed.
Doubt if he will play next week but did nothing to rule him out either.

You knew there would be no more goals the second that useless Iwelumo came on! A pathetic attempt at a volley as well. Good to be in next round and hope for a decent tie!

A solid enough performance against a side that kept going despite the scoreline.

Sordell really showed some moments of quality today and Deeney did well.

Oddly Bradford probably caused us more problems at the back than some championship sides..

Bond was very composed I feel and Bruce getting 2 will do his confidence a world of good.

Roll on the 4th round....

BTW Fair play to the numbers from Bradford..more than a lot of champ sides!

Good result, but why oh why did we have Iwelumo and Garner on the bench. They must be the worst "strikers" in the Championship and it is an insult to the youngsters at club that they are ahead in the pecking order.

Big shout out for the ref today. Thought he was excellent. Even Dyche only had a couple of rants at the fourth official which is a good indication!!

I lost count of the shouts for handball that the ref ignored. Shame we didn't have him on Monday!

All in all, though, a tidy performance, and I'm glad that we didn't sit back. Dyche must have told Eustace that he preferred Prince as he was more creative. It worked! I've never seen such an full-on performance from a half back, who also completely bossed the midfield. Hogg was tidy enough, but Eustace put him in the shade.

Spot on, this was surely the game to have youngsters to blood once the game was won
We know what Iwelumo and Garner can (can't do)

A good win. I wish Harry the Hornet would f**k off though, it's so embarrassing to hear the high pitched 'watford' every time he bangs that drum. At least that band weren't there today. Are we a football club or a circus?
Stevenage away please.

Agreed..no wonder we looked poor attacking wise once Sordell and Deeney went off.

Maybe Garner might be better in the future but Big Chris has none!

We put in a good shift today for parts of the game. Marv, Skip, Hoggy were my pick. Their second goal was at least a yard of side and as was the disallowed one also.
Bondy had a nervous start but got more into the game and lets be honest was not really tested by a very boisterous up and at em team.
I liked the look of young Tom James, showed a good touch.
Tend to agree about big clumsy Chris, he really looked embarrassing but I thought Joe Garner needs a run in the team as he does get into good positions but needs a few games under his belt before we should bare judgement on his contribution.
I also hope we don't persevere with LD at full back, he looked like the player we remember a few seasons ago......awful.
I am not sure that we will lose Nos, yet.
Let's see what happens over next few days.

It annoys me, people like you having a problem with 'fun'. The atmosphere at the vic, generally, is non-existant. A sense of togetherness, a show of support, getting behind your team, however u want to say it, is important, it can be the difference between winning and losing. There are some grounds that truely do have a '12th man factor' about them.

So garston edl, what are u doing to get the crowd vocal? To try and help the team win? To create a bit if atmosphere?

Even if it doesnt really work, i applaud anyone who trys their best to try and improve my matchday experience.

Garston edl you are obviously far too cool to get involved .

Is it any coincidence that the 2 times the Marching Band have been to the Vic we've won well both times?
That and the fact that they get into the game unlike many fans.

I think the real point is that we do not generate vociferous support.
Seating arrangements do not help this and perhaps if there was an area where maybe several hundred fans can sit together in the Rookery without ticketed seating restraint then the more coal vocal could huddle together.
I've no problem with the marching band but it really highlights how we have became the worse fans in the country at home (not away, we are pretty good on the road). It mst really dispirit the coaches and players.

Without doubt its the worst home fan atmosphere in the country! Spoke to some Bradford fans i know and they were amazed at it! We must try and do something about it? Every club justs laughs at us every game.

LD has been a great servant but Hodson has come on bounds and no longer gets booked for the late tackles and his crosses are first class. He must be the first name on the sheet at RB. Please pray we keep Nosworthy or better still buy him. Even if Liz is fit he wont be match fit for two or three games - could be big trouble.
I love harry, he gets into the game and I agree, we make more noise away than at home and sitting in the UR its embarrassing the lack of vocal support. I keep saying that if the Rookery has a drum , we should get a triangle.
Next 4ound? Lets get Man City or Spurs away and get big money then concentrate on the league. Spend the money on Nyron!

I do have to laugh at the people who say we have the worst home atmosphere in the country. The simple fact is that the vast majority of home support at most grounds is as bad as ours. I have supported the 'Orns home & away for 40 years and can still only name a dozen or so grounds where the home support is the '12' man.

Why is it when we beat anyone they are a crap side ? The fact is Dyche has built a decent side which we should get behind not keep picking on negatives.

I totally agree the atmosphere is pathetic and the '12th man' is a big help at a lot of grounds. My point is we as a set of fans are already a laughing stock amongst other clubs fans. Having a bloke dressed up as a hornet responsible for generating some noise is embarrassing, as is using an American marching band. We shouldn't need manufactured support! We are a club with 125 plus years of history, it's shocking the lack of real support and passion and it's getting worse. Harry had his place - junior hornets parties, high 5's with kids in the family stand, but NOT leading our 'support'!

I go to plenty of away games and dont wear ear muffs like yourself! I have yet to come across a ground where the home fans are as quiet as ours! Looks like you have as problems with your eyes too or do you like posting the same old rubbish 3 times! sshh!
Looks like he don't go to away games or else he would know that most of the other 70 plus teams are more passionate than ours
I think it's because all of support from the old council estates has gone and been replaced by the middle classes and Saturday flask and blanket brigade.
I agree with an area for families but not the whole bloody ground

As you've rightly said before lutondown - GT's reign as gaffer was great for the football, but bad for the atmosphere. The family club emphasis was too much. The atmosphere picked up again wen the vic road got a roof (mid 90s) and carried on till maybe early 2000's but is now the worst its ever been. So many lads I know that used to go, but have now dissapeared and not been replaced by the younger generation.

Funny to hear Lutondown mention the support from the old council estates as from the age of 9 I used to walk to the game with my mates and I lived right at the top end of South Oxhey up by HMS Warrior, not sure you'd get many 9 year olds doing that now though.

I now drivel from Bicester but pick up my daughter who has been a season ticket holder for 9 years now from her Uni in Guildford, so my round trip on Tuesdays and Saturdays is now around 200 miles and I still arrive ready to make as much noise as I can. i sit, or rather stand in the back row of the Rookery and I get frustrated with the lack of noise, i'm now 54 and have no shame in making as much noise as I can but there are always pockets of noise in the Rookery instead of all together other than when we score or go close.

I agree with another poster that having been to lots of away matches myself, I haven't been to many grounds that are any better than our own in relation to noise and we are always loud when we're away regardless of numbers, but then most away fans are as they are all concentrated in a relatively small area.
