WATFORD are back up to second in the Championship after ending their three-and-a-half-month wait for a home league win with their biggest success of the season at Vicarage Road this evening (Saturday) by beating Wolverhampton Wanderers 3-0.

Steve Kabba got the Hornets off to a dream start by scoring his first goal for the club, and in his first in football for more than two years, inside the opening minute.

However, Aidy Boothroyd's troops then had to undergo a strong examination before Tommy Smith secured the points with a two goals in as many second-half minutes.

Boothroyd made two changes following the 1-1 draw at Sheffield United with new signings Leigh Bromby and John Eustace, as expected, making their debuts at the expense of injured captain Jay DeMerit and Lee Williamson, who was among the substitutes. Richard Lee took over the skipper's armband, Darius Henderson was fit enough to be included on a bench that did not feature a substitute keeper nor, as the manager hoped, Collins John.

Wolves boss Mick McCarthy, meanwhile, made just the one change following the 2-1 victory over Sheffield Wednesday, with Michael Gray coming in for the injured Neil Collins. David Edwards and Sylvan Ebanks-Blake, who both missed last weekend's 4-1 FA Cup victory at Vicarage Road due to being cup-tied, started. New signing Kevin Kyle was on the bench.

After varying their free-kick routine, and not launching the ball into touch for once, Watford were straight on the front foot and, in quite incredible circumstances, were in front inside the opening minute.

Bromby launched a terrific long throw from the left that reached the middle of the Wolves box, bounced up, and there was the much-maligned Kabba lurking at the back post to head home his first Hornets goal from close range. The scorer then embarked on some frenzied celebrations which saw him sprint half the length of the pitch, wildly slap the hand of his ecstatic manager and then seemingly embrace anyone and everyone he could find in the Watford dug-out.

Buoyed by this, the home side were soon attacking again, with Bromby sending over a deep cross from the right, Jobi McAnuff striking the ball back into the danger zone where the stretching Kabba was only able to deflect a header well wide.

Wolves' first reasonable opening came in the ninth minute when Andy Keogh attempted to flick Gray's cross from the left past Lee from the left angle of the six-yard box, but the Hornets' keeper was not unduly troubled. Soon after, Darren Ward rose well to meet a Gray corner from the left, but the Watford old boy was unable to direct his header from eight yards on target.

The visitors continued to have the bulk of the play and their next effort arrived in the 20th minute when Karl Henry fizzed a 20-yard effort comfortably over Lee's bar. Then the Hornets were forced to concede another corner when Gray's ball in from the left was not properly cleared and Ward was almost presented with an excellent heading opportunity from close range.

However, the home side produced a good move which started with Mariappa doing well to dispossess Ebanks-Blake before breaking forward and finding Nathan Ellington, who cleverly slid the ball round the corner to McAnuff. He then surged away down the left and cut through two challenges before making his way to the byline, but Wayne Hennessey dealt comfortably with his final ball.

Having being under the cosh for much of the first-half, Watford were handed a promising situation in the 35th minute when Smith was fouled near the edge of the Wolves area. Ellington's free-kick hit the ball and spun up, Kabba battled for the ball and it then broke back for John-Joe O'Toole, who, from a standing position on the edge of the 18-yard box, struck a left-footed half-volley a yard wide of Hennessey's right-hand post.

Watford kept the pressure on with the ball being played to McAnuff, who attacked the Wolves backline, cutting in then out before hitting a low left-foot shot which Hennessey didn't seem to know a lot about as he unconvincingly blocked with his legs.

At the other end, Mariappa made a good block to thwart an Ebanks-Blake shot on the turn after good work down the left flank by Matt Jarvis, who, like seven days previously, was proving a threat whenever he got on the ball.

The Wolves left-winger was at it again soon after, driving inside and testing Lee with a low shot after Keogh's sideways header had found him in space.

But the home side held out for the remainder of the opening period to take a 1-0 lead into the break after an opening 45 minutes which, for the most part, they had been forced to roll up their sleeves and battle.

The visitors started the second period as they had spent much of the first - on the front foot - and Lee was forced to go to ground inside the opening minute to keep out a 25-yard strike from Ebanks-Blake. Soon after, the former Plymouth Argyle forward saw another effort from slightly closer in deflected behind.

However, Watford had a half-chance on 52 minutes when a poor Hennessey clearance fell invitingly for Ellington, but, after sorting his feet out, the striker dragged his 20-yard effort wide. Next, McAnuff found the side-netting from the right side of the area after a useful build-up involving Smith and O'Toole.

But four minutes later the home side went very close to doubling their lead. Kabba, cleverly, went and stood right in front of Hennessey as Bromby wound up for another long throw from the right, thus preventing the keeper from getting to the ball when it did come into the area. It then broke for McAnuff, who managed to engineer a shooting position but Rob Edwards got back to clear from close to the goalline.

Both Keogh and Gray fired wide for Wolves as the game continued to ebb and flow, before another decent chance came and went after 62 minutes from the home side's first corner. McAnuff's set-piece from the left was struck deep, Bromby headed back into the danger but Smith got too much on his angled close-range effort and headed back over the target.

McCarthy then made the game's first change by bringing on Kyle for Stephen Elliott and he arrived in time to see Ellington curl a free-kick from left of centre, 20 yards out, wide of Hennessey's near post.

Kabba's hard-working and self-rewarding afternoon was ended with just over 20 minutes remaining when he was replaced Henderson, but five minutes later Hennessey was forced to tip a close-range Ellington header over the bar after another Bromby exocet had caused yet more havoc.

But from the set-piece, Watford finally got a second. Ellington attacked the near post region to get on the end of Mat Sadler's set-piece and turned the ball into the six-yard area and there was Smith lurking to deflect home his third of the season.

Not content with that - and after Jay Bothroyd had replaced Keogh - the Hornets winger notched number four within 60 seconds. Ellington hooked the ball forwards, Henderson flicked on to Smith in plenty of space and, after Hennessey had raced from his line, Smith calmly slid the ball past him to make it 3-0.

Boothroyd's reaction was to bring on Lionel Ainsworth for McAnuff, and then Al Bangura for Ellington, and within minutes of entering the fray Ainsworth had cut in from the left side of the area, but dragged his shot wide of the near post.

A very important win and 3 points that keep us on the heels of West Brom. Great defensive performance - especially in first half, Bromby was outstanding, Sadler composed and Eustace improved as the game went on.

Very pleased for Kabba and wasn't Hendo magnificent when he came on for last 25 mins? Tommy Smith top man as always.

A really big result and great for all true Hornets fans.

Now we need to perform at Ipswich will be very tough indeed but the squad is looking much stronger and can stay the course.

Come on You Golden Boys!

Top performance, looked like we had something about us at the vic at last!! Eustace /Bromby looked like just what we have needed for week's a gutsy spine. Jobi look's like he has remembered how to take people on, and Hendo when he came on what a handful. Dury is still out on Ellington look's unfit, where as Kabba look's the fittest he has ever been in his career. Come On You Horns!!!!!

Fantastic performance!!! the defence was excellent, especially bromby and Marriappa. Kabba was really up for it and got really stuck in.

On another note, The fans were excellent today, The best atmosphere in the rookery all season. The drummer got stuck in, and it was really funny when we coppied their keeper-put-off chant; "You Fat B******d!!!

A very solid performance, particularly the second half.

The new signings all had good games, with Marriapa and Smith both in excellent form. Henderson's intro really beefed up the forward play.

BUT, don't get too carried away. Our passing was poor for much of the game, too many balls just hoofed long.

Please, Please can we see more on the ground, passing, controlled football. If we have any real aspirations to play in the Prem, we cannot continue to play ugly, hoof type football. Its not pretty to watch and it will get us nowhere in the Prem. If we're really serious about being a top 10 team by 2010 then we have to start to learn to play a more cultured style. If we dont then next season will just be a repeat of the dismal experience of last season.

I'm still pleased we got 3 points, lie second in the table, and played so much better than last week. BUT I long for a real cultured display of sharp, crisp, one touch, flowing, passing football from the team I've followed for the past 34 years.

I can at least dream.

Chris, i agree if we are going to be a Premiership stayer, the passing will have to improve. The long ball, and long throw from bromby will eliminate a lot of the passing in midfield but if we finish 2nd in the Top League again all will be forgiven...

Blimey.......I thought I was watching Watford playing at molineux for the 1st half, improved midway through the second. I just don't rate Ellington at all, doesn't win any headers thus having the ball straight back at us, If Collins John shows any passion I can see NE remaining on the bench for the remainder of the season......A very expensive luxury. What a difference a week makes. Spent last weekend bemoaning the lack of central defence, and am now wondering where DS & JD will fit in! Mariappa Bromby were immense, but Doyley a bit of a worry - so many options now that he may not get another look in. Eustace took a bit of time to get going - hope he carries on as he finished.

Anyone see highlights of the Baggies match? Ref Mike Pike handed them their equaliser -shocking decision, as bad as his performance against us at Barnsley.

Another home game and another bitterly disappointing performance from Harry The Hornet. Our so called mascot spent the first 45 minutes slumped in the corner of the Vicarage Road end and, so far as I could see, didn’t appear at all for the second half.

When is Boothroyd going to grasp the nettle and get rid of this waster – particularly when he has a ready-made replacement in John Joe O’Toole

Come on you happy clappers, that game was utter drivel, Wolves were cutting us open time and again until henderson came on, there was nothing about us until the 70th minute, although Kabba scored and looked full of endeavor, he was running around like a headless chicken, really school boy stuff, embarrassing at times. Ellington was so not interested, just jogging about without purpose, his heading ability is non existent, who teaches him to jump? He should be a top player for 3.5 million and he's not, waste of money and a pansy for wearing gloves and still looking cold....TART!!
Luckily AM, LB, TS, JM, and for the last 20 mins DH played well...The others apart from Lee looked extremely average, Eustace looked useless.

I'd also like to echo that the Rookery (back and front) were excellent. If only the middle and, god forfend, the Rous stand, would make some bloody noise!

I took a couple iof friends along for their first game in England. they were mightily impressed with the atmosphere, which says a lot for Watford. Was it only cos we scored so early? I hope not.

The Jan window has closed with some decent signings for the club and DS is on his way back from the Nations Cup.
Enjoyed the game - team very well organised at the back by LB (and JE). The frontmen tried some effective flicks and interpassing. JE passed the ball sideways at times in midfield -
much to the surprise of his colleagues !
Defended well throughout and attacked with passion and flair at times. NE does seem to disappear at times but he hit the volley from the corner that led to the second goal and obviously has talent on the ball.
There is no reason not to play direct football and really stick it to 'em but we seemed to have an added dimension to our play this time.

It is all opinion of course but your "analysis" is not correct. we increasingly got on top--SK was effective--JJ became fairly dominant in last half hour--Saddler refuses to get beaten on the outside - JE adjusted to the pace of the game to be influential & wolves were made to lookk toothless & increasingly ineffective. They had just won 4 in a row so it was a superb turnover. When at the game i felt the first half was scrappy and fairly even, and i felt that in the second half we were mostly on top and played much better football than virtually all season.
I've now watched it back (good ol sky+) and after we scored so early we pretty much let wolves get on with it, which meant they dominated the half in terms of possesion, but we defended very well and Lee was hardly tested at all, and obviously the new players spent the first half feeling their way in. LB was excellent from the start i must say. Second half we stepped it up a notch, and because wolves had to push forward more we found it easy getting round them. Eustace was slow to start but as the game went he became much more involved, and looked a pretty shrewd buy, overall the three new signings in the team all looked happy to pass short or sideways rather than hoof, which is fantastic news, and Ainsworth (or whatever his name is) seems very lively, good pressure for JM, JM has been much better since LA's arrival.
Now we've got the home hoodoo of our back lets hope we keep playing like we did in the 2nd half, and you never know we might even nick an automatic promotion place.
BUT there's still a long way to go and one swallow doesn't make a summer, just a great night.

Agree leave Bromby where he is. He has gone on record as saying CH is by far his best (and favorite) position. Don't know how I'd accommodate Shittu and Demerit though, although Jay is out for about 3 weeks. I continue to be impressed by Ellington (I'm in a minority)He rarely wastes the ball, has a good touch and, now think about this, 2 in 4 could easily have been 4 in 4 (hit post against Wolves in cup and his flick on from the corner on Sat may well have gone in without Tommy's touch)I also thought his link up play was pretty good. Lets judge him after a long run in the team and not a few games. Thought Eustace started slow but 2nd half he came into it well and looks to be an asset, by breaking up the oppositions rythmn and playing the simple pass.Feel a lot happier than I did a week ago!
