Burnley thwart Hornets

WATFORD boss Aidy Boothroyd is likely to need another holiday this week after seeing his side held by Burnley in a heart-stopping, incident-packed encounter at Turf Moor this afternoon (Saturday).

Darius Henderson and Jordan Stewart twice put the Hornets in front but Robbie Blake scored twice, including the equaliser 90 seconds from the end of normal time, to ensure a frenetic match ended 2-2.

Although they looked likely to record their tenth away win of the season when Stewart scored just minutes after coming on as a substitute, Watford will be the happier of the two sides with a point, especially after seeing Burnley waste a succession of chances and hit the post.

Ade Akinbiyi was the chief culprit, posting a contender for the miss of the decade on ten minutes.

A mix-up between Richard Lee and Leigh Bromby looked to have handed the much-maligned striker the opener on a plate but he, astonishingly, rolled the ball wide of an empty net.

The Hornets only returned from a four-day break in Dubai on Thursday morning but they looked like they were suffering from sunstroke in the opening 20 minutes as Burnley carved them apart.

Kyle Lafferty screwed an effort across the face of goal and wide of the left-hand post after being sent clear by Chris McCann, Akinbiyi astonishingly missed an open goal on ten minutes when it seemed easier to score and then Steve Caldwell came within a whisker of connecting with a free-kick from Graham Alexander.

Lafferty and Elliot were causing havoc down the flanks and it was from another centre from Elliott, this time from a corner, that the hapless Akinbiyi astonishingly managed to head wide Burnley's fourth gilt-edged chance in the space of 20 minutes from six yards out. It seemed only a matter of time before the rampant Clarets opening the scoring.

But Watford finally overcame their apparent jet leg midway through the half and caught the home side cold from a set-piece. An inswinging corner from Jobi McAnuff, won after Clarke Carlisle had scooped a dangerous cross from Nathan Ellington over his own bar, was emphatically headed home by the unmarked Henderson.

It could have been even better for the Hornets just minutes later when Ellington was sent clean through. A second goal looked on the cards but the club's record signing saw his effort save by Brian Jensen and then Henderson's follow-up effort deflected wide.

Although Watford still looked very shaky defensive, particularly down the Burnley left, they still posed the opposition problems, mainly through the dangerous McAnuff who had two efforts on goal in the space of three minutes towards the end of the half.

Boothroyd, though, would probably have been pleased to hear the half-time whistle and he was entitled to afford himself a wry smile as Watford could conceivably have been dead and buried by the 20-minute mark yet went into the break one goal to the good.

The manager opted not to stiffen the defence and bring on Jay DeMerit at half-time and he was probably wishing he had after Burnley threatened twice in the opening four minutes of the half. The lively Elliott saw a right-footed effort spilled by Lee and then Akinbiyi saw a header ruled out for offside.

The crowd were starting to crank up the noise level and were out of their seats following a frenetic spell just after the 50th minute. Akinbiyi was fortunate to only pick up a yellow after making contact with the referee, John Eustace and Andy Cole became involved in a shoving match, Dan Shittu lost his cool while Ellington escaped unpunished after a wild challenge on John Harley. Referee Dean Whiteside was struggling to keep a lid on proceedings at this point.

With Burnley continuing to pose problems for an overworked Watford defence, Boothroyd opted to bring on DeMerit for Adrian Mariappa just after half-time and moved Bromby to right-back.

It appeared, though, to make very little difference as within a minute Burnley had been presented with yet another golden chance.

A raking cross-field pass from Elliott found Lafferty on the left. He checked inside and unleashed a right-footed shot that Lee could only parry. The ball looped up in the air straight to Akinbiyi, who somehow managed to head the chance over from six yards out.

The former Crystal Palace, Stoke and Wolves striker must have wished the ground had opened up and swallowed him up at that point.

McAnuff will also feel he should have done better with a chance two minutes later that, had he converted it, would have been game, set and match to the Hornets.

Tommy Smith picked out his fellow winger at the far post but then wheeled away with his head in his hands as McAnuff could only plant his effort into the side-netting.

A high-octane encounter threatened to boil over soon after when Henderson caught Jensen, the Burnley keeper, off the ball with a late challenge. Henderson, like Akinbiyi earlier, was lucky to escape with only a yellow card.

Burnley must have been starting to wonder if it was going to be their day when the unmarked McCann headed a corner against the inside of the post from less than six yards out.

However, Owen Coyle sent on Blake for the hopeless Akinbiyi and within minutes the substitute had fired the Clarets level, latching onto to a through ball to beat Lee with an effort that deflected off the despairing dive of DeMerit. It was a goal Burnley fully deserved and one that sent their pumped-up visiting fans into delirium.

A thrilling match appeared to have taken decisive twist on 83 minutes when Stewart, of all people, lashed in a half-cleared free-kick from McAnuff for what looked to have been the winner.

However, Burnley had other ideas and they salvaged a fully-deserved point when Blake, who gave the Clarets attack a real cutting edge, beat Lee again with a left-footed effort that bounced in off the post.

To be fair it sounds like a well earned point, if a little fortunate ironically. Tough place to go and now we look forward to Norwich on Tuesday.

You've got to learn how to win said Boothroyd. Would help if you subbed Ellington earlier.

Spot on the dog. Listened to the match on TCR, they couldn't understand why Ellie was still on. Whats he got on Boothroyd? CJ must be wondering what hes got into.

Dissapointed we didn't do better. Just like to point out that if Akinbiyi had been send off like he should have been, he wouldn't have been subbed by the guy who scored both their goals!

wasn't at the game but am interested in ellington's performance away from home, last week vs preston i thought he was unfit and lacks passion for the cause!

Strange game-feels like points dropped in the end - had better of first half but should have been behind yet could have gone in 2 up-I know that sounds daft but our errors gifted open goals(against run of play) that bthey missed Ellington was poor with Hendo MOM.

Aidy got sub wrong-AM was doing well & moving LB to R back did not work at all. If he wanted JDM on he should have taken DS off-very in & out game-by him-I fear his form is dipping again.

A good away point although obviously thought we'd got all 3, but sounds like we didn't really deserve them.

Need to hope QPR do us a favour tomorrow and we can get 3 points on Tuesday vs Norwich, then things will start to look much better.

March is a very difficult month indeed but I'm sure we can get 3 or more wins to set us up for the run-in.

Keep the faith & Come on You Golden Boys!

Great value for the £19 entrance money - the WO report is OK but very much playing up Burnley's part - the game was there for the taking by the Golden Boys, with Jobi M being particularly threatening. To be fair, the conditions (swirling wind and ropey pitch) didn't help the ball players. Could easily have been 3 points, though Burnley should have put a couple of their sitters away. Referee was lenient - Akinbiyi should have gone for pushing him and he didn't even stop the match when 3 Burnley yobbo's ran on the pitch in the middle of a Burnley attack. Great support, well done to everyone who made the journey up from Hertfordshire.

finlay-just read report-I agree with you Burnley oplayed on the break in first half & certainly created very little on their right-Lafferty only had 2-3 first half runs that I recall--did better when LB against him-after they missed open goal we always looked likely to win I felt.

Burnley were the home team and pressed well, missed a couple of sitters and were OK.

However two things stuck in my mind...we lost the lead twice, the second time ith only a minute or so to go and our defense again for the second match looked shaky.

Bromby moving to right back did nothing for me and put plainly Richard L keeps having communication problems with whoever plays central defence. Lloyd is also ,I believe the best man for man marker in the squad.

I think we did well to get a point up there but badly against PNE to drop two points. As for the defence it is a tricky one for Aidy to get the balance back. Games are now going by and we are doing well by not losing difficult games but when we get ahead we need to stay ahead and make sure that home games are three pointers. if we do that the golden ones will be smiling. All the best Aidy.

How much longer are we expected to carry the Excess Baggie?..why didn't ref do us all a favour to have sent him off?..10 men would have done better.. without the "Clown Duke" ..

Chris-agree with most of what you say but in first half surely-WE did the pressing-game played around their Pen Area for long spells-when they broke away we were not good @ back-great chances for them but I bet we had most possn--diff in second half but where affleks report comes from I do not know--Saddler was comfortable in first half I felt. Not sure it was R lee-clearly(first hal;f) called for balls to be left & they were-LB poor backpass & poor marking nowt to do with Lee.The defensive sub was wrong-if JDM is to come in it must be for DS-agree re LD but for the first time this season I thought AM was very good-he was getting forward as well & the switch just invited more pressure.

Aidy has to pick the best balance as you say -not mess around trying to fit certain players in.

NE has gone backwards last 2 games & we have little real threat. A game we could have lost but really should have won late on. A fair result overall

Sorry -meant first time AM was very good @ R back-he was excellent V S utd & wolves @ C half.

Good point really.

QPR did us a favour and as long as we pick 3 points up vs the N'arch then we can look back on this favourably.

Having said that ... anyone know when the paly-off dates are ... I might need to make sure I keep them free.

Well, it's all down to Collins-john now, NE has had his chance, too small to play our game up front. He wins 1 in 5 headers up front (maybe still not used to our playing style).

chris, the vic says...

Hindsight is a wonderful thing.

Dont disagree with your comments sage and think you are spot on Johno with your comment about NE.

However it all begs a question about NE. First of all i doubt whether he has shrunk and from memory he did well playing alongside Jason Roberts and I still believe NE is a good if underused player. BUT he doesnt suit our long ball play and unless we get an AJ I cant see us changing that much to a more varied attack.

This being the case why did Aidy buy him and having bought him and kept Priskin we continue to send longballs in with variatins of cosses/shots from Jobi and Tommy and almost make NE redundant.

it is this type of tactic that worries me about Aidy.

We then take CJ to burnley and leave him on the bench..maybe he wasnt fit or maybe NE had a superb game in Aidy's eyes.

Anyhow 3 points against Norwich would be good!!

Always disappointing to concede a last minute equalizer but on balance a draw is a reasonable result up there.

PS Been away for a few days and looking back over the postings from last week (yes, I plead ‘guilty’ to the charge of being a bit of a sad ****) I see I missed a series of extraordinary outbursts from our Midlands-based correspondent last week (see East Stand Image Revealed, Thursday 26 ). Priceless!

After last few away games, I have checked loacal papers for Ipswich, Charlton and Burnley (sad I know) for their take on things. Ipswich and Burnley call us thugs and claim referee gave them nothing and the Charlton rag never even bothered reporting the game! How comes we are getting all this negative thug press again amid claims that referee is in our pockets? More sour grapes?

Ellington is absolute crap, the only person who doesnt seem to realise is Boofers who once again appears to have a blindspot when it comes to certain players abject performances, this total waste of money being the latest.
