Hornets pay price for indecision

WATFORD are back up into the second automatic promotion spot on goal difference following a 1-1 draw with Norwich City at Vicarage Road tonight (Tuesday) and, incredibly, the top four in the Championship are now separated by as many points.

But unlike Saturday's 2-2 stalemate at Burnley, the Hornets' fourth successive one-point match was very much a case of two dropped, with some far bigger games around the corner.

A home win appeared to be the most likely outcome when Dan Shittu headed in his ninth of the season, but as the second-half wore on Watford slipped into indecisive mode, seemingly unsure whether to stick or twist, and Jamie Cureton punished them with a terrific equaliser.

The Watford boss, who surprised fans in the Rookery by mingling among them beforehand as the snow began to fall, decided against making any changes following Saturday's 2-2 draw at Burnley. This meant captain Jay DeMerit again had to settle for a place on the bench alongside Collins John and Jordan Stewart, who scored what looked like being the winner at Turf Moor.

Having seen his side lose 2-1 at home to Blackpool, former Hornets manager Glenn Roeder decided on four changes to his starting XI. Darren Huckerby was ruled out with a groin injury, but Jon Otsemobor, Cureton and Kieran Gibbs were demoted to the bench. Their places were taken by Juan Velasco, Mo Camara, Matthew Pattison and Ched Evans.

With the weather having deteriorated to near blizzard-like proportions, Watford could have scored inside the opening minute. Following a free-kick, Mariappa rolled the ball to Tommy Smith, who went round Camara and got to the byline before pulling back a low centre which the unmarked Nathan Ellington rather snatched at as he hit it left-footed over the bar.

The first of Leigh Bromby's trademark long throws then caused problems as it was flicked on by Shittu, but landed on the roof of David Marshall's net. But an even better chance came and went for Ellington in the eighth minute. A flick inside from Jobi McAnuff sent the Hornets record signing streaking through on goal, but as he closed in on the target he over-ran the ball, allowing Marshall to block and then the striker was unable to keep the rebound down.

Mariappa and McAnuff then played in a couple of dangerous crosses as Watford continued to pile on the pressure, before Marshall punched a Mat Sadler corner off the head of Darius Henderson. But from the resultant second set-piece, the Hornets got the breakthrough they had been threatening in the 11th minute.

McAnuff swung in the corner from the left and the largely unmarked Shittu rose highest in the six-yard box to firmly plant his ninth goal of a very productive campaign into the back of Marshall's net to make it 1-0.

Having been completely under the cosh, the visitors mustered their first attempt in the 17th minute when Mark Fotheringham hit a tamely-struck half volley at Richard Lee from the edge of the area. But normal service was soon resumed, with John Eustace striking a rising 20-yard piledriver wide of Marshall's right-hand post.

Ellington saw another effort deflected across the penalty area as the game continued to be played almost exclusively in the Canaries half. Next, McAnuff toyed with Velasco on the edge of the area before driving inside and hitting a right-footed shot wide of the near post.

Ellington's fortunes failed to change in the 27th minute when he struck a free-kick into the wall, but the visitors did gain some brief respite when Pattison fired straight at Lee from the right edge of the area.

However, the Hornets almost went 2-0 up in the 36th minute when John-Joe O'Toole cleverly turned away from a challenge before laying the ball off to McAnuff. He took one touch inside before hitting a ferocious drive which Marshall almost misjudged as it hit him on the body and rebounded behind for a corner.

Norwich had their best opportunity of the half four minutes before the interval when a free-kick from the right was diverted into the path of Dion Dublin by Evans, but Lee was right behind the veteran striker's right-footed half-volley from 15 yards.

However, 1-0 was how it stayed as the half-time whistle blew with the home side almost completely in control.

Roeder sent his troops out early for the second period and they responded by creating a good chance in the opening minute. Lee Croft drove inside off the right flank before flighting over a cross which Dublin really should have done better with than head tamely well wide of the target.

The visitors had another opening soon after when Shittu's carelessness allowed Croft to again find Dublin on the edge of the 18-yard box, but this time the striker blazed well over with his right foot.

Watford were soon back on the front foot though, with Ellington seeing a goalbound effort blocked and this led to a corner from which the home should arguably have had a penalty. Shittu failed to make contact with Sadler's set-piece, but as the ball bounced around in the six-yard are and as the big centre-half sought to latch onto the loose ball he appeared to be tugged to the ground.

Croft then forced Lee to go to ground to keep out a 20-yard daisy-cutter and then did well to grab a 25-yard free-kick from Evans at the second attempt that, although it was straight at the Hornets keeper, was very well struck.

Roeder was the first manager to make a change after 61 minutes, bringing on Jason Shackwell for Alex Pearce. Velasco was then rightly cautioned for a thigh-high challenge on Ellington.

By this point though, the nerves were becoming tangible among the Watford fans at their side's failure to score a second, and the home side's cause was not helped in the 72nd minute when Stewart had to replace the injured Sadler.

Norwich made a positive change after 75 minutes by replacing Ryan Bertrand with the more-attack minded Cureton, but Boothroyd's response was to give a debut to John in place of Ellington.

But Watford's indecision over whether to stick or twist was rumbled in spectacular fashion with nine minutes remaining when a Croft cross was met on the half-volley by Cureton from the edge of the area, and Lee could only dive and admire as the ball flew past him to make it 1-1.

Yet Watford were very nearly back in front minutes later in incredible fashion minutes later when John's header across goal was acrobatically diverted towards his own goal by Dublin with a scorpion-like overhead back flick, but Marshall somewhow managed to scramble across to push the ball behind.

John then flung himself at a flick-on from a second corner, but couldn't divert the ball on target, before Pattison was booked for flying into a tackle on Stewart.

Luck favoured the visitors in the first of four minutes of injury-time when O'Toole's goalbound shot was deflected over. Smith and Bromby also had efforts blocked, but Watford's search for a winner was to end fruitless.

typical that stewart is the reason we lost the game, doind his trademark run-away from the winger. Pathetic.

Can't believe we lost that one, unless everyone else is as bad as us it's good-bye automatic promotion, all thanks to my favourite left back.

Er, Watford Guy - we didn't lose this one - it was 1-1. And surely it wasn't all Stewart's fault - or did Ellington not miss all those chances early on?

not JS fault he showed the player inside & he passed to Cureton who we gave space in which to shoot-how that is JS fault is beyond me!

Poor second half-Tommy off his game & gave AM little help--NE is simply not acceptable in either effort or impact-we lack quality & composure.

should have been 3 up after 15 mins, this percentage football is abysmal to watch even when we are winning,Ellington is a square peg in a round hole with these tactics and the next 3 matches will make or break our hopes of automatic promotion!
Aidy you say that the players at your disposal are gifted footballers as heard on 3counties tonite, well why don't you try and get them to play some football!!

First we missed 4/5 clear chances. Arguably in secondhalf we had up to 3 obvious penalties.

As for the team Duke wasnt good but had chances, Darius created nothing despite a high work rate. John Jo was appalling ran around like a headless chicken with no tackling, little closing down and very poor passing..the game passed him by..Tommy Smith was innocuous ..i cannot comment on Jordan i would be banned...Richard lee needs to work on angles etc as well as dominating his area if he continues in between the posts and why he has the armband only aidy could explain. We threw away 2 points tonight in a game we dominated..how sad that Jobi, eustace and the defence were let down by the inadequacies of others. I thought CJ looked quick and is worth a run..who with I am not sure. At present neither Darius or Duke are achieving much but the way we play must favour Darius.

But two points thrown away in this tight run in isnt good and some of the players need sorting.

Agree with Watford Guy, JS was useless starting with his first corner (heather mills could have done better). The man is a joke and struts around as if he is on the catwalk. Cant tackle, wont tackle and then is the first man on the pitch to try to blame everbody else for his mistakes. His stats will show his completed pass rate as high because the first sign of danger he treats the ball like a hot chip and consistently plays his team mates into trouble. I thought that we had seen the last of that clown, only hope that MS is back for Tuesday.

when i say lost, i'm refering to he fact that we dropped 2 ponts yesterday. Age stewart is not all to blame - we should have put the ame out of reach way before then. although ellington did some nice passes, he's the stike and is expected to score goals, leave hat job to the midfield. Stewart is to blame in my eyes before he ran a fast as he could away from the ball instead of turning to face the winger.

Hornets pay price for Jordan Stewart is what the headine should read. Yes it was ALL his fault we drew this game. He got Eustace booked because he couldn't be bothered to do his job, now means Eustace has a 1 match ban and then went walk about allowing Cureton to equalise!

It's no wonder Stewart is not doing well, with everybody on his back. Is it my imagination or did the goal come down Norwich's left wing, with Cureton - that means the responsibility for giving him that space lies between Smith, Eustace and Mariappa. As far as I am aware Stewart was playing on the left, unless my brain was so cold that it was incorrectly interpreting the images my eyes saw. However, I do think there was no need to take Sadler off as he was having a good game. The midfield combo of Eustace and O'Toole is looking good and with Smith and McAnuff playing well on the wings they are causing problems for the opposition. Also I would have taken Henderson off for Collins John once Norwich brought another big centre half on. John needed more than 10 minutes to get a decent run and if we used the pace of John, Ellington, McAnuff and Smith we would have run rings round the Norwich defence, and also their height in defence would have been irrelevant as we could have kept the ball down.

It was good to see Henderson actually being awarded a number of free kicks, as he is consistently fouled during a game but only a few are given to him. Perhaps if he kept his mouth shout and gave the ref less lip he would get more from them - that's certainly was how it worked when I was reffing. The player that gave me grief got nothing unless it was blatant!!

Mariappa has improved during the season and looked more settled last night. The games next week are massive for us, but the lads need to think about their game and not the relevance of the result.

I thought that generally we played well but needed to up our play in the last third. It was not just hoofing it up the pitch and Eustace is a great controlling influence in midfield. We played some good football, but do not know how to finish off a team once we take a 1-0 lead. Should have been 3-0 up at half-time. Were ineffectual in second half, but nearly gifted a goal from a superb Dion Dublin effort!!

I think JE would need to get 10 bookings for a ban at this stage of season, unless you know something different?

Clearly NOT all JS fault-he was not at it but who was?--not his man who was given space to shoot--re NE -I want to be wrong but will not be I fear-at least CJ played on shoulder of last defender & has pace.NE affects team adversely--laziness can be balanced by class but not seen much of that--give me Kabba any day!

I was sitting in the Rous Stand. Jamie Cureton took the ball on about half-way on Norwich's left flank, moved forward, cut in and shot from around 25 yards. Is that not correct?? Ellington's problems in the second half were mainly because Henderson decided to go for everything and was even challenging Ellington in the air. When Ellington did win in the air he would knock the ball to where Henderson had been only to find he was no longer there and there was no other support up front. Henderson is not a thinking player and so does not make the moves for Ellington to knock the ball in to. Ellington does have pace, he showed in the first half. He and Collins John would be a more creative pairing up front and then Henderson could come off the bench to change the emphasis to a taller and more physical problem for defences.
Anyway Sage, it was good of you to make so many last comments - a bit like Ernie Wise dying in one of the plays what he wrote!!

Mad as it may seem, I really hope Matt S was injured when he was taken off or I have witnessed a most inept piece of management. To take him off & replace with Jordan Stewart whilst leaving Nathan E on the pitch was apalling.
One refreshing thing about our back 4 since Saddler & Bromby arrived was we no longer saw Stewart or Doyley continually backing off until they disappeared up their own existence, ending up on the 6-yard line putting the whole team under pressure. 5 Minutes on the pitch & JS brings all these past nightmares back to life & a very poor norwich are level.
JJ O't looked lost in the middle last night, particualry in second half, & as a result I felt Eustace was doing the work of 2. This allowed Norwich possession & a chance to build confidence.
Collins John 10 minutes to make a difference, what an appalling decision.
We cannot continue to play with 10 men & the manager should recognise that, his infatuation with NE must stop, he's got to stop messing with the back 4, Bromby has proved a better centre half than Shittu or Demerit& Saddler makes JS look a joke.
What is going through your mind Aidy!!!
