The wheels on Watford's faltering promotion bid showed signs of buckling at the KC Stadium this afternoon as they were comprehensively beaten by a rampant Hull side.
Goals from Michael Turner, after just 60 seconds, Fraizer Campbell and Caleb Folan sent Watford crashing to their first defeat in 13 games and left them playing catch-up in the race for promotion.
It was a result and a performance that was worryingly similar to the morale-sapping 3-0 defeat the Hornets suffered at home to West Brom in November, and Aidy Boothroyd will have his work cut out to pick his side up after the floor following such a wretched display.
advertisement
Boothroyd's biggest concern will be his mis-firing strike force.
Nathan Ellington was anonymous and the away fans cheered when he was replaced midway through the second half. Steve Kabba got himself sent off and now joins the suspended Darius Henderson on the sidelines while Collins John will be scratching his head after seeing Dan Shittu pitched in attack before him.
The defence was also unrecognisable from the solid outfit of recent weeks and they could simply not cope with the pace of the irresistible Campbell.
A hugely impressive Hull side did exactly to Watford what the Hornets did to other teams in the early part of the season and Boothroyd's men simply had no answer.
They could no live with Hull early on and found themselves two goals down inside 12 minutes.
Turner found acres of space inside the Watford penalty area to head in a free-kick inside a minute, and then things got worse when Campbell, the striker on loan from Man United, converted a cross from Henrik Pedersen.
Watford were all at sea defensively and it looked like getting worse before it got better.
Watforc created precious little going forward. Jobi McAnuff forced a flying save from Bo Myhill, that would have been ruled out anyway because Kabba had strayed offside, while Shittu marauded forward in the only other goalmouth action of note.
Boothroyd would not doubt have read the riot act to his players at half-time and the response was marginally better at in the second half.
Opting to withdraw Ellington and play Shittu in attack and ask Tommy Smith to play in the centre of midfield, Watford made a better fist of things and Lee Williamson at least forced a fine save from Myhill.
Boothroyd changed things again during the second half in a desperate attempt to find a way through, moving Shittu back to the heart of the defence and introducing John.
But it was Phil Brown's first substitution, that of Folan, who made the sort of contribution Boothroyd was seeking.
Latching onto a defence-splitting pass from Campbell, Folan out-muscled and out-paced Bromby before firing a shot underneath Richard Lee.
Things looked like they could not get worse but they did just a minute later, Kabba seeing red for late challenge on Michael Ricketts.
It capped a miserable afternoon for Watford who slipped down to fifth in the table.

why we didn't bring in any loans is beyond me?? the players we have at our disposal (considering the players we're missing) aren't good enough. aidy must be the only person who can't see this........
quote
Now this is no knee jerk reaction but..........
I have been saying for at least a couple of months this team is not promotion material and that's down to 1 man...Aidy was planning for this campaign 2 thirds of the way through the premiership season, he simply hasn't replaced the players we've sold, either in the summer months or through the window that's just passed.
We are playing players in the wrong position i.e JD at right back and DS as striker when we've got one on the bench, what's that all about? He seems to have lost all reason and wont admit it, instead he's more intent on proving people wrong and it aint working.
He got lucky with the fact we been up the top all season without playing well, gone are the days we can say "were gonna stuff these", although he keeps saying just that, It's just spin.
I am in agreement with colin for calling for his head at the end of the season, Sheff U did it, Charlton will do it and Watford should also, He's stubborn, tactically inept, been a manager for 5 minutes and he thinks he knows it all. Lets be fair he should get the bullet on the signing of Ellington alone.
I wasn't happy at 5 oclock on Thursday, i'm even more unhappy now, come on board, make some enquiries now for next season.....please!!!

Does anyone care anymore? The players certainly couldn't give a fig. I went to Plymouth and we were a shambles with one chance on goal in the 20 mins Plymouth played with 10 men.
Aidy the great man motivator is obviously no such thing. His tactics and style of play come from a Harry Enfield sketch.
Nathan Ellington looks like he's just got up every time he comes on the pitch.
Get rid of the lot of the useless wasters. They remind me of a queue of dole scum outside the post office on a Monday morning.
Right I've got that off my chest and can now get on with more important things.

Its relegation all the way next season clappers, I can hardly wait.
Unless we get rid of this turd of a manager and his useless signings.
A 1-0 home defeat to coventry, followed by a 4-1 mauling at West Brom to cap off 3 straight defeats as i look into my crystal ball....and out of the play offs...
Still its for the best, not only do we deserve not to be there, can you imagine how poor we would be against the sides in it?
We will finish 8th this season and the spin doctors will come out in foce, telling us we are punching above our weight (puke) and that we are already planning for next season.
The script is already written, its one we know only too well...still i'd better be careful otherwise Simpson might take legal action.
Judging from fans comments on BBC three counties, I am not in a minoirty at all, which leads me to suspect that some of you on here are actually working for the club.
Anyway here is to a truly awful, embarrassing season, with some of the worst football and plsyers ever produced by WFC.
BTW: So much for our youth system now that the guys instrumental to its success were culled last year.

You got your **** whupped by a better side. Every teams manager after playing the Tigers in the last two months has said its their worst performance of the season, Boothroyd has said it again already.
Phil Brown wound our players up today showing them Betty Boothroyds comments from the game at the Vicarage, the rest was a formality. By the way, Shittu is blessed with two to many letters in his name!!
Onwards and Upwards , TigerGal.

Replaced Ashley Young with Jodie McAnuff, replaced Bouazza with Lionel Ainsworth, replaced Marlon King Collins John on loan.....There lies the problem, together with Ellington, we are simply too weak to score the goals to get promotion.
We should cut and run with NE, I know it was a hell of a lot of money to shell out on this waste of space but at least we'll save on the wages, got to be worth it, he's crap! We have loaned out a player that AB likens to Ibrahimovic, he hasn't a clue, OUT HIM AT THE END OF THE SEASON, he's costing us big time, money and position.

Phew now it is looking more official, we will be in the Championship again next season. Mathematically we could go up, performance-wise we do not have a hope in hell.
We are not good enough for the prem. The board would not be prepared to put their hands in their pockets anymore. It would have been complete agony each week up in the Prem anyway.

At least we were not the first team to be relegated from the premiership before the end of March! If, and it is a big if, we go up, with the present squad and tactics it could well be the first team to get relegated by Christmas!

I feel sorry for the 11,000 fans who commited to season tickets for next year,AB is self opinionated on what a great job he is doing, most of the team are his signings so for gods sake don,t give him anymore money to waste,I find it hard to believe that all of his atacking signings now seem incapable of scoring I would suggest that AB and his coaching staff are all defence minded with no attacking nonce due to never played at a level of anywhere near prem quality, look at the youth and reserve performances since WFC replaced existing staff in the last 12 months.
quote
Evening chaps,3.5hrs since the final whistle and all you clappers should now have decided how you're going to defend the pillock(sorry Neville) Boothroyd.
Ah,having just read the above comments it would appear that the rose tinted spectacles brigade can't put a positive spin on this debacle.Boofers inability to get anyone in before the loan window closed is a sad indictment on his managerial prowess, can we assume that he has finally realised that he has pi$$ed £4 million of our money up the wall.
Before I get accused of being negative all the time today is pretty much the final nail in the promotion coffin,7pts from a possible 24 is relegation form,I'm looking forward to the pillock(sorry Neville)telling us that someone is due a good hiding.I'll finish by by saying I told you so,you didn't need to be a genius to see Boofers isn't up to it,surrounds himself with yes men and has no tactical awareness what so ever,I do wish I was wrong but the evidence has been all too obvious.
Taxi for Mr Boothroyd !!

What a sad lot you of so-called supporters you all are, with short memories and no loyalty.
This is the time to stand up and support the team & manager.
Whatever happens between now and the end of the season, we will be in a better position than 3 years ago. (Thanks to Aidy).
I'll be cheering them on Saturday and through to the end of the season.

This has been an excellent season for the Hornets, in comparison to last year. We have been in the top 2 or 3 all season long, every game has been meaningful and I am sure that will be the case to the end of the season and hopefully a playoff spot. Our schedule the last 6 games has been brutal, always it seems playing a team in the top 6 and most of those games away. With the exception of WBA the run in is considerably easier and we still have every chance to succeed. The bottom line is promotion or not we would spend another season or two languishing in the depth's of the Premier. The simple fact is we are a small market team who could never possibly hope to compete with the big boys. Thats a fact and thats how it will always be. This season has been a success for the most part so stop whining and enjoy the fact we have been involved in competitive meaningful games from day one of the season

Sage, do you really think that this board would have any 'decent' money available if we did go up?
You would be looking at £6m+ just for one striker and we need at least 3.
And to answer your question no I do not take any satisfaction in us losing. FACT- we are not good enough to go up, FACT if we did with this team we would get hammered most weeks.
FACT- Our current squad offers very little. How many goals have we scored lately??
We are only where we are in the league because of our good start, its been a slippery slope since then. We have not been playing well for sometime and we certainly have not been entertained so apart from blind loyalty what positives can you see for the near future.???

To comment on Jonty's comment. I have been a season ticket holder for almost 20 seasons. I donate the majority of my tickets as obviously I get to perhaps 3 games at best. Fortunately I have managed to watch the Hornets many times on the Sat. I have seen many good games, Both Southampton games come to mind, Ipswich away, Crystal Palace away, both Wolves games. Yes they are 5th tonight but the fact remains they have been either top or 2nd most of the season.

We were thumped 3-0 today and by all accounts very convincingly in all areas. That is the first time I have heard AB say that there wasn't one good player in the WFC to single out today - at least he is being honest. Until today, many fans (myself included) agreed that we have become very hard to beat. Today we went to a club who had won their last three, were 'statistically' punching above their weight and score two in twelve minutes. That's hard for any team to recover from. I don't think it is time for the wheels to start falling off and neither do I think we should call for the managers head. Yes I am the other side of the world, but we are fifth, still with in a good chance of making top two (yes I know we need a chnage in results) or at least the play-offs. At times there just seems almost a total hatred on this board, a hatred against our players, manager and staff. If it is that bad, that awful, why are we fifth and why do YOU bother? This is not a direct criticism, more a curiosity because I always thought true fans loved their clubs, through thick and thin. Isn't that why we are called fans?

Awful day – made bearable by very pleasant session in the boozer just now – but I can’t help think (hope?) that this strange season has more twists and turns to come yet.

Having travelled the best part of 400 miles i feel i am fully justified in asking the club for my money back. i have supported the glory horns for the best part of 35 years and have never seen such a totally inept display. What i really don't understand is how can Aidy really believes that playing half of our team out of position, we have any chance against a team that clearly has momentum behind them. is it really that difficult at half time when your 2 0 down to take a gamble and bring on a player who we understand to be one of the quickest in the division, namely cj. we must have had the best part of 1800-2000 fans at the K.C. today and i am sure to a man we could have made more inspired decisions today, than our self obsessed leader Aidy. Promotion, please lets not go down that route, the way we played today we would make Derby look good.

We are in a false position .... due in large part to other results in recent weeks. However a play off spot is a very attainable target given our releatively easy run-in. The season is not over yet!

2005 - saving us from relegation.
2005/06 - getting us promoted to the premiership.
2006/07 - getting us to an FA Cup semi-final
2007/08 - Taking a nine point lead then keeping us in the top 6 all season so far.
Some of you are a fickle, whinging bunch of joyless idiots who do not deserve a successful team or a successful manager.

the last comment is the only logical comment of anyone. if we let boothroyd go,who would replace him,and his stats are very impressive. irrespective if we go up this for us has been a decent season position wise. we have all done those long away trips and lost, thats part of being a fan,so get on with it and get behind the team. fyg watford has one of the smallest populations for any town,in the football league,so maybe we are over achieving. but what i would say is apart from wba, none of the teams have experinced this situation b4,so could be squeeky bum time to come. lets see...

AB said "We were beaten by a better team. They were better than us at the back, middle and up front. I've no complaints".
No complaints what a attitude to have clearly not a promotional team in the making that includes AB1

I can understand the anger, and frustration, vented here. I agree with much of it, but to me the key point is promotion would need us to totally rebuild our frontline - on current evidence - which we could not afford anyhows.
Sadly, I am now in the Aidy should go camp. Our style of play is so tedious, yet we obviously have players who can play 'football' so we need a manager that embraces that style. I think AB has been great for this club, but his greatest weakness is his stubbornness... it has come into play with a few of our signings (NE, JM and CJ) and I'm not sure it's a character asset.
Flexibility is key, but AB only seems flexible when it comes to who wears the captains armband, which, in itself, sends a message to both players and fans.
I still think we can go up, but that won't be the way forward - not if we play in such a way.
AB to go to a 'bigger' Championship club next season, or, possibly, a lower Prem club. We get an old frind like Gary Johnson, or try the experience - and drawing power - of somelike like Paul Ince. after all, he's only up the road.
Forever yellow, regardless.

At least someone's putting names in the frame but I can't see either Johnson or Ince leaving their repsective clubs to come to us & no better alternative to Aidy.
That aside, I'm appalled at the reaction to a bad performance minus arguably our best midfielder & forward at the divison's current form team. We didn't play well so what counts now is how the team & fans react next Saturday; there's enough "foot shooting" going on by the top 10 clubs to allow any of the top 6 to go up as 1st or 2nd. If we get behind them, we may just surprise ourselves by what we can achieve.
Can we wait until the season's finished before we start asking for sacrifical sackings?

of course they would spend money-need new players even if we stay down-whaT I loathe about you,the Garston gobshite,etc--is having NOT GONE to the game U cannot wait to stick the boot in. I have doubts about much of what AB does but it is NOT a board issue unless you are that thick & ignorant!
it was dreadful yesterday & it has been coming to an extent--we will be in P Offs unless we can win the potentially winnable home games, but it is rubbish football and I find NE`s lack of interest an unacceptable slap in the face--however unlike many of you I do not believe in throwing the baby out with the bathwater.
Lots of you rubbish Hendo-because you appear not to see the game clearly-as I predicted, yesterday showed how lightweight we are without him.
ANYONE WHO ADVOCATED PLAYING NE (I KNOW WHO U R ) should be too ashamed to ever post again!

Finally, at season end you judge AB,etc not now-he irritates me more & more but perspective is needed( i know some of my posts lack it after watching that ****!) if we go up he stays--if we do not, unless he resigns he will stay.
m I do wondfer if the huge staff draw the sames conclusions as he does from games as I often do not.
Naming mngrs is stupid (but here goes) IF he leaves, which I doubt< the Ince suggestion is too silly for words--unproven at this level--surely Billy Davies, etc would be more credible?
If AB stays(likely) he has to accept that our style which has become cruder & cruder & less & less effective must change.

I see it pretty much the same as Sage Lazarus.
Panic and over reaction must be avoided but Aidy needs to get real.
I have to say that at Half time I suggested AL B off-tommy in midfield LA on wing & Cj on for Ellington, who has got even lazier and less effective than before (just `cos Hendo is out ellie is NOT suddenly going to do it) but I PREDICTED the stupid Shittu as striker move.
For F***`S sake-if I can see he is going to do that so can oppo mngrs!
Frankly I am losing faith in Aidy but still hope for success.
His sub decisions were exactly as I saw it until Hockaday left.
Those who maon at Hendo need to stand in front of a mirror and say 10,000 times--I know Bugga all about the game!
Ellington is a player who is going to do a Ricketts and go down and down the leagues-lots of you rate him & others want Tamas in as well (dropped by PNE yesterday) Sod It--even I want him recalled rather than put up with the Duchess anymore!
Going out now before I go into total meltdown, thanks for listening,I want to cry!

I really do despair of some of you guys if it looks like a turd, steams like turd and smells like a turd i'm afraid you are going to have to accept that it is a turd.Losing DH was always going to be a disaster the bloke gives everything in every game he may not be the best but anyone who gives as much as he does will do for me,I wonder how Boofers sleeps at night after wasting £4mill of our money on that lazy sack of $hite he ought to be forced to pay it back when he's given the tintack, you can add Notgoodenuff,Hoskins
,Priskin,CJs wages for 6months,JS and a few more I can't be bothered to mention as well.
The football this joke has served up for our delectation this season has been pityful he is as hopeless as he appears and why some of you still defend him is a mystery to me.Finally, before I get harranged by the clappers as to why i'm supposedly not supporting the team I say i will still be supporting this club long after Boofers has been consigned to history, the sooner the better.

I love the way Colin and other post on matches they obviously never went to. Perhaps they could give us their opinions on books they have never read, films they have never watched or holiday destinations they have never visited.
Although our performance was dire with very few exceptions, but the game was not helped by some dubious decisions. In the build up to both of the first two goals Rennie gave Hull free kicks for what looked like fair challenges. The crowd did not help as I think it was the 30th minute before we started to sing, though most were too cold to do anything apart from shiver. There were few high points: Shittu muscled them out on many aerial challenges, Tommy Smith was excellent, Lee made a magnificent second half save after a few potentially disastrous mix-ups and Collins John at least seemed to want the ball when he came on. We seem to lack any cutting edge resorting constantly to trying to cross the ball in for our forwards to head in, and the Hull keeper and defence obviously knew this was our only tactic so effectively stopped our every attack. It was like watching England on Wednesday night, we need to get the ball on the deck occasionally to mix things up, thread some through balls between their defenders for men to run on to. The way Wayne Brown was diving in for everything and constantly talking to the others defenders and keeper was in stark contrast so our Keystone Cops mix ups at the back. They were so much more fired up than us both on and off the pitch, mainly because some rather rude things Aidy had said about Hull being widely reported in Hull. That made them play more like a team and their crowd got behind them. We looked like a bunch of strangers at times. Anyone who wonders why Ainsworth is not getting a longer run out need no longer wonder – he dribbled the ball out of play and his crosses made me suspect he thought a Rugby League game was still being played at the ground. Aidy needs to pick the team up and getting them playing as a unit. They need to look like they care. Hull closed us down so quickly and we let them play. The crowd needs to get behind the team. All the internet whingers on this site are idiots if they think it is a good time to replace the manager at this point of the season. The way we are fading away does remind me of Taylor’s last season in charge. We need some guile, no boos.

I think any fair minded fan would have to agree.

What does concern me is the comments of those that went indicating that the team appears not to care.
I think for the next two home games we must care and not boo whoever plays/goes off etc.
I think Aidy isnt as good as some think but certainly not as bad as some make out.
OK he isnt a Graham Taylor but then he isnt as bad as many we have had.
I think over the last two and a half+ games we have missed John Eustace and the midfield without him will be inexperienced and may be run over.
We will see what difference Darius makes and whilst defensively we will improve and against two lesser teams we may get a win or two.
As a club we have had a wonderful opportunity to move this club ahead. I believe it should have been led by the team on the park, Mr Simpson has gone for stability first.
Long term will prove him right or wrong.
Overall Aidys reign has brought some success as Ian said, but many many opportunities have been wasted by Aidy and his signings have not been as successful as we might have hoped for, BUT we are not at the season end and all the post season speculation needs holding back.
We need to get behind the team and Aidy and just sort out sage wh seems to want every player to justify his selection with defensive qualities!!

Why worry about how many games we will lose in the Premiership untill we get there....the reason we are top 6 and should be "Promotion Contenders" now is because we benefitted from the finances of our Premiership season, how much money we have to reinvest next year after paying out for the Duke and co, remains to be seen so i will take the prize of the Premiership this season please...the Championship will be alot harder next year, with QPR, Derby and probably Ipswich having money to burn together with two more relegated teams (The more hit and runs we do in the Premiership, the more we can invest in the team).Aidy is a good bloke but i can't help feeling other managers in our position of 8 points clear would have had us cruising to promotion.I 100% commend Aidy for protecting his players
and talking a good fight but Kevin Keegan relied on that tactic but sadly its how good the players are on the pitch that matters not through Aidy's eyes.

I heard the game on 3 Counties (nice debut as a commentator Kevin) and saw the goals on ITV. We were "out-Watforded" by Hull, who showed us how it should be done in this league. The first goal was a poweful centrehalf header from a free kick (just like Demerit used to do from Ashley Young) the second a speedy striker dashing into space (Danny Weber) the third a muscular striker shrugging off his defender (Marlon King). This defeat will be hard to recover from, especially with Henderson and Eustace still absent for key games. I fear it is the play-offs for us (that would be thought an achievement in former years) but I am not confident we will triumph against any of the likely play-off candidates.

Sage: Paul Ince has a **** site more experience that AB had when he was appointed manager of Watford and he has the advantage that he's been a top player (and more recently) and had been heard of!
I will be as happy as the next person if Aidy stays AND we change our style of play, regardless of the Division we find ourselves in... but do you honestly think that will happen?
KJ will not manage Watford again.

What is the point on still going on about how we should have kept Marlon King?? He wanted to leave end of stor. Yes I'd have liked him to be replaced by someone better but who else wants to come to Watford??
Also, I don't think Watford should od would get rid of Aidy before end of season. How exactly would that help??
Summer clearout out of Ellington, Kabba, and Collins John at least no matter what devision we're in!!

Sage: Ince has more experience of management than Boothroyd had when he came here, and he has the same amount of experience at this level as Boothroyd did when he came here. Plus, nobody would say 'Who?' as pretty much all of us did the day Boothroyd was appointed.
MOJO: factualy correct, but the main difference in the two instances is/was our relative league table position at the time - with the quite real possibility of relegation under Lewington. However, AB has stated on several occasions that anything less than automatic promotion will be a failure. So, if we doi indeed 'fail' how we he respond?

O.K Sage,
It's obvious you are the 'unofficial' moderator of this message board. You win I lose.
I will still go and watch this 'dross' week in week out as that is what is my blood.
The mention of 'the board' hits a nerve with you.
I cannot see how someone financing the team will trust someone with such money in the future if they squander it on a cart horse like Ellington.
He dint want to come here in the first place,he found no other options so thought he would join the 'gravy train'. His pathetic excuses for effort in our shirt are embarresing.
Mcanuff/Poom are other examples of players draining our finances with either no or poor displays.
I am not part of the 'AIDY out brigade' but someone has to have a word with him and say 'are you sure of this signing' before we ALL have to put our hands in our pockets to sign another donkey.
It also appears too many backroom staff have also seen the light and left. Are you telling me the board had no say in that.
As my final ever word on this message board can I say that the facts are we will not get promoted this season, we cannot attract decent players next season (we will be priced out) so can we at least agree on te fact that at present , we are a mid table championship side going no where.
I look forward to your 'cut and paste' of my comments with the usual drivile yuo will respond with.
It appears your view is the only view. Based on that I will say farewell
