It wasn't pretty and was certainly nervy but Watford are now only two points behind leaders Bristol City - and with a game in hand - after edging out Coventry City 2-1 at Vicarage Road this afternoon (Saturday).
It looked the Hornets would have to settle for yet another draw after Leon Best cancelled out Nathan Ellington's early opener, but Player of the Season favourite Tommy Smith changed all that with ten minutes remaining to end his side's eight-game hunt for three points and secure only a third home league victory since mid-October.
Following the 3-0 defeat at Hull City Aidy Boothroyd chose to make two changes. Lloyd Doyley was restored to the starting line-up after a ten-game absence at the expense of Jay DeMerit, while, more predictably, John-Joe O'Toole came back into the midfield in place of Al Bangura. After successfully winning the appeal against his red card at the KC Stadium, Steve Kabba again partnered the mis-firing Nathan Ellington in attack.
Like his counterpart, Coventry boss Chris Coleman also made two changes, with Isaac Osbourne and Best coming in for Jay Tabb and Michael Mifsud.
Following a torrential downpour in the build-up to the game, there were traces of surface water on the pitch as kick-off approached, but the match got off to an even start.
The first real moment of incident came in the fifth minute when Best caught Richard Lee late, but referee Darren Deadman calmly dealt with the foul and gave no more than the free-kick to Watford.

But two minutes later, the home side were in front with the first shot of the game. Smith won a second ball towards the right side of the Coventry area and played it inside to Ellington, who, after one touch, took aim and fired a left-footed daisy-cutter inside Kasper Schmeichel's near post from 20 yards to score his first goal in almost two months.
Boosted by the early breakthrough, the Hornets then forced two corners in quick succession and had their next opportunity in the 16th minute when Lee Williamson rolled a free-kick into Smith's feet on the edge of the area, and the winger checked back out on to his left foot before striking a rising shot over the top.
Watford were growing in confidence and nearly scored a terrific second four minutes later when O'Toole won a challenge near the edge of the Sky Blues' area and unleashed a right-footed thunderbolt which Schmeichel did well to parry back out. Next, Smith stood up an excellent cross from the right which Scott Dann did well to head clear from virtually beneath his own crossbar, as Kabba prepared to pounce.
However, the visitors had a decent opening in the 27th minute when a well-flighted free-kick from the left by Stephen Hughes was flicked narrowly past Richard Lee's right-hand post by Robbie Simpson. Then Osbourne tried his luck from 25 yards with a right-footed effort that also went the wrong side of the same upright from City's perspective.
The temporary shift in momentum continued on the half-hour when a Simpson pass released Best, who checked back inside Doyley before hitting a low 20-yard drive which Lee was right behind.
But the Hornets really should have gone two up after 34 minutes. Following a deep Mat Sadler free-kick from the left, Williamson worked a nice give-and-go and got to the by-line before cutting the ball back, but Smith, who was all alone and had time to pick his spot, blasted wide of Schmeichel's right-hand post.
Ellington, as has unfortunately become customary, then fired a free-kick into the wall before some very neat footwork by Kabba on the left side of the area led to a dangerous cross and Watford's third, and then, fourth corner of the afternoon.
Lee safely gathered a Best cross-shot just before half-time, but the Hornets went into the interval with their one-goal lead intact.
Coleman decided to use the interval to make a change - and it was a positive one - with Mifsud coming on for Richard Duffy. The substitute took up a place on the right side of midfield, with Osbourne moving to right-back.
Watford started the second-half as they had spent much of the opening period, struggling to retain possession, and the game became increasingly scrappy with the ball spending plenty of time in the air.
However, Jobi McAnuff did show some composure in the 56th minute when he twisted and turned 25 yards out before striking a low right-foot shot which didn't unduly touble Schmeichel.
But three minutes later Coventry were right back in it. Michael Doyle spread play out to Julian Gray on the left and he swung over an excellent deep cross which Best rose well to meet and head back across goal and into the bottom right-hand corner to make it 1-1.
With the home faithful becoming agitated again and Boothroyd showing no apparent willingness to change things around, Coleman did just that after 72 minutes by replacing Simpson with Zavon Hines.
Watford though, did try to push forward but were increasingly lacking the composure and quality until, with Collins John preparing to entering the fray with ten minutes left, Smith made City pay for a mistake at the back.
A long Lee clearance was flicked on by Ellington and Dann misjudged the bounce and could only help it into the path of Smith, who calmly controlled the ball before lifting it over the onrushing Schmeichel to make it 2-1.
The impressive Dan Shittu was then booked for a foul on Daniel Fox, before Boothroyd decided against bringing John on and instead replaced McAnuff and Ellington with Jordan Stewart and Adrian Mariappa. And, soon after, DeMerit came on for Doyley.
But Watford saw out the closing stages without any great alarm to get them right back into the thick of the hunt for automatic promotion.
Phew! Well done lads and I am really pleased for NE and TS. It sounds like a tense finish but with Hendo back hopefully we can build on this. Great to see Southampton win (I used to live there for 6 years and have a soft spot for them). It sounds like it wasn't always pretty but a win is a win. You 'orns...

Follow this one with another win against Barnsley and we are right back in it.
Finally we have managed to get a win out of what could so easily have been another draw - a corner turned perhaps?

There is winning ugly and then there is that, awful.
The midfield once again non-existent, with Williamson and O'Toole proving that they cannot cut it at this level.
Apart from the goal, Ellington was largely annoynmous, whilst MacAnuff was just powder puff. How we need a left sided player who can run with the ball and whip in a decent cross.
I still think we are going to get hammered next saturday...play like that against West Brom and we will.

i really dont think we are back in anything yet.
It was a bad display against another bad team.
Tommy S missed a sitter in first half that would have given us comfort...a bad bad miss which another time would cost us.
Glad Duke scored and three points is a rarity but we need to do so much better in the last five games and I dont fancy us in the play offs so we need to go for a top two finish.
Interesting LLoyd made a come back from not even being on bench before

Lw was great 1st half & decent mostly in second JJ was very good overall--Ne great 1st half poorish second--but Joby was useless!

Of course, the three points were the main thing today and lets all rejoice in the fact that we won, but does anyone have any idea what the formation was at the end and can anyone remember a more defensive-minded Watford 11 than that which finished today? I don’t want to be too critical after what was, after all, our first win in what seems like a lifetime, but that really was such a dreadful performance that it feels like quite a hollow victory.
Anyway, I think that a win on Wednesday will see us go top. Funny old game.

Good first & poor second from the team generally.
Lucky win & TS was NOT MOM!
having slammed the duke I will admit he had a very good start but faded in second half--SK worked very well--DS & LB poor for goal--why did cov take Simpson off? he battered us I thought.

Thank you Lord for those three priceless points. We did all we could not to get them, but our Plan B worked, so thank you.
If I could just ask a small favour. Is there anyway possible that you could make Nathan Ellington into something, even remotely, appear like he can play football? I know this is asking alot, but heyho for £3.25m its worth atleast asking.
If this is not possible, could you please return him to the stable with all the other donkeys.
Thank you.

very lucky to win today. ok first half. dire second half
thank god coventry did not equalise , those coventry fans in the exzec boxes in the upper rouse would have caused a riot .
how can a team playing this badly have a chance of automatic promotion. very strange division. roll on wed against a tired barnsley team

Well done lads!!
Can we leave off Aidy and the boys now and make sure we SUPPORT 'our' team for the rest of the season?
It's a shame that the minority of whingers on here have forgotten the good times so quickly on the back of a 'poor' season. We are still right in the hunt to go up in the toughest league in the world, how is THAT poor?
Yeah Aidy has made mistakes but has got lots more right than he has got wrong.
And as far as success with transfers goes, don't forget he bought Marlon, if my memory serves me rightly he was quite good wasn't he?
Let's get behind the lads until heaven forbid we don't go up and can justifiably have a moan!

Good result, poor 2nd half performance.
I thought we started brightly then lost our way big time as the game wore on.
Whilst I'm delighted with the win, I am somewhat bemused by our reluctance to make substitutions in a timely manner and make an impact on the game, ie at the start of the 2nd half when Coventry were all over us for the 15 minutes leading up to their goal, and thenat 1-1 by changing things around when we needed to score the winner.
Still, we won and I thought there were a number of good signs out there today, with the much maligned Ellington looking sharp & interested plus two well taken goals from him and our player of the season Tommy Smith.
Let's hope we can bag another 3 points in slightly better fashion on Wednesday night, when Hendo will be back to lead the attack.
Anyway well done on the 3 points & Come On you Golden Boys!

I am sure that all of us anoraks who post on this site ‘support’ the team but, it would seem, less and less of us enjoy what we are seeing, Promotion or no promotion the playing style needs a major overhaul. That is beyond debate.

I think you totally missed the point I made, which was to try to remain positive until the end of the season and will the 'orns to promotion.
Or were you just using my post to have another whinge about how Watford aren't Man Utd.

Last post from mme on this thread (probably) truth & fairness please.
I have knocked NE & LW most of time-but LW has been good lately & Ne was v good in first half.
TS missed sitters & scored winner well but wingers were poor I thought.
SK excellent (for him)

Colin, yeah you, halfwit. Ellington scored one and made the other. I dont care if he sits in the centre circle and reads the Koran for 89 mins every game as long as he scores and makes one every game. As for Lee Williamson not 'cutting it at this level', he was one of our better performers today, and if u'd get out of your armchair now and then you'd be aware that Willo was one of the very few to hold his own in the Hull debacle last week. Chris from Hemel take note too, this is all about results now. As for you Prof Plum, never could a name be more apt!! What did you want with 10 mins left and 2-1 up? Maybe chuck on a couple of forwards and go 2 at the back. Does that sound ridiculous? Yeah, just like your last post, think about it Plum

As thre Cliche goes, its the points not the performance that count at this stage of the season.
We finished with, I think, 7 Defenders on the pitch, at home, against a very poor side.
I think Ellington had the best game I have seen him play but still managed to fade to obscurity. Great finish by Ellington & Tommy for the goals.
Midfiled awful, O'toole hopelessly inadequate, runs round like a kid after the ball most of the time but with the odd brilliant cross field ball. We need Euastce back urgently & JJ warming the bench.

Hector, that 'very poor' Cov side were unbeaten in 6 and i fail to see the relevance of us being the home side. Surely the relevant fact is the scoreline and the time left as to why we went defensive!!

I cannot agree 1% with your views on midfield-- also Lee W`son was terrific in the first half & though a bit wild in second half he was not bad & overall built on his recent perfs.
i want JE back with JJ O`toole but LEE W`son has been one of better players recently.

Frankly ANYONE who saw O`Toole as a weakness does not watch closely in my opinion.

tiger bay boy - your arguments are far from sound. The fact is that we only won today because of a mistake made by the Coventry defence. I don't like to knock the team or manager but I've got serious doubts about Boothroyd now. We didn't win because of his decisions today. I was watching him when we scored our 2nd and he didn't even see the goal go in...too busy dithering about whether to make a sub. We got a slice of luck, if we hadn't then John would've come on and with barely 10 mins and that's not much for someone to change a game around in. Make a sub after 65-70 mins then it might have an effect! As for defensive subs there's nothing wrong with wanting to protect your lead but he goes too far in this respect. Too many defenders and you're inviting pressure, it tells the home side we're hanging on and then you find yourself sat deep without any attacking outlet. At least with a fresh attacker on as a sub (even if we were winning) it would give the chance of hitting them on the counter and making it safe!

Granted 3 points.
This was an awful display by 20 outfield players who are technically poor in every department.
Apart from the opening few minutes it was gastly to watch.
Bad thing is that we probably cant play much better than this!
Take smith out of the loop and we would be looking at a completely new ten in the team should we go up.
Clueless tactics but 3 points nonetheless![bold]bold[/bold]

Everyone has had a moan on here about some of the results/peformances yet today we got a result on the back of a poor performance. I will take that. I have never booed one of our players during the game in 30 years. Do not see the point. Best bit today was to see how the Jordan haters kept quiet when they realised that there was a few fans who were prepared to sort them out if they carried on booing Jordan. The bloke 5 rows in front of me scared the S**t out of them, brilliant.
What a genius, playing eleven in defence is a way of creating space in the opposition half.
I wonder if it will catch on!!

Silly old Hector!!
Why is it, that when we haven't killed the game off in the 1st half you've got a distinct probability of not going on to win the game?
Dunno what that's all about, not good for supporters! I think it's a bit of a psychological thing, have we got one of those in our vast array of coaches? or is it a fitness thing i.e NE?
I can do without it!!!
No show from Colin in the moons (bottle job)

Hector, im gonna ignore you now as you clearly dont have a clue. Creating space obviously wasnt the plan, taking the 3 points was.Everyone knows this was a poor game but the boss did what he had to do to win this game. Leicester, Southampton and even Colins beloved L*t*n play some lovely eye candy football but guess what? Have a look at the table and weep Hector. Hiya ozzy, got your fix early today i see x

tiger bay boy - your arguments are far from sound. What about the mistake of our lot giving the ball away needlessly on the halfway line leading to their goal? You dont like to knock the manager but.... What the f*k are you doing watching him when we're scoring? How do you even know when we're scoring if you're watching the bench moron? How can we go 'too defensive' with a one goal lead and less than 5 on the clock? We still had Kabba, Smith and McAnuff going forward and how much safer would you like it? 2-1 and the final whistle going sounds like a pretty safe move to me. Sorry if wernt entertained, try the Palace theatre on Weds night.

Hmmmm you're quite the genius aren't you tiger bay boy. The sitter that Smith missed was a "miss", GET IT? I don't know what rose tinted specs you have on but I'd like a pair. Have you considered that it's possible to see two things going on at once, my view from the Rookery happens to take in the bench and the goal at the other end. Incredible I know! Anyway, I believe that Smith scored with 10 mins to go, add on stoppage time and that's plenty of time to allow the other side back in it. Your point about Kabba, Smith and Macanuff is true but they were tired. At least a fresh pair of legs up front would have caused some trouble. I've seen too many games this season where we haven't been rescued by the other side making a mistake.
Just calling it the way I see it. As for the insults, nice one but I suggest you engage your brain before typing out drivel. Now go and take one of the pills that man in the white coat gave you.

So you dont reckon its ok for Aidy to talk to his subs whilst the balls in play then Hurley. Perhaps we could introduce a time out system to keep you happy. Yes and Smiths was a MISS, whats that got to do with luck? And with 10 mins to go we only had 4 across the back, you might have noticed if you wernt bench watching. Mariappa sat in the Eustace role and DeMerit came on later for Doyley, so where is the fabled ultra defensive 7 acrooss the back? Qiute disconcerting to think that i share the Rookery with care in the community escapees.

HEY we got a bit of luck for once!
subs were ok & first half was V good.
V poor second half but biggest problem was our wingers I thought.

First post, couldn't keep quiet any longer.
Abysmal display yesterday but good three points. IMHO JJO'T one of the bright prospects in what is very mediocre team. When we last went up to prem at least we had a Prem quality playmaker (AY) and of course MK. Now I don't think we have any players who will cut it in the Prem. One hope for me is that we seem to have some good youngsters who may come good season after next, otherwise no chance next season if we go up.

I find it quite strange, the amount of knockers that JJ is getting in posts..
Ok,granted he might not be the finished article yet,but he,s always at the oppossition, breaking up play, and works real hard for his 5k a week, which is more than can be said for a lot of our much higher paid,so called "ESTABLISHED"..playe

Don,t knock the tryers..

Johnny,correct.
O`Toole is 19 with c 12 games under his belt!
He is our best prospect(not much comp)and will become a top player.
We were lucky in the end but should have won it by Half time.
We have had little luck this season whilst Bristol in particular have had loads.
Even when not playing well the defeats v B city & Plmth were unjust--draws would have been right.
We were blatantly cheated at Barnsley & should have beaten Stoke.
With avge luck we would have at least 7 more points even during our rubbish period--the last 4 months!

I think everyone on here should state where they sit............
Happy clappers in the Rous and and normal people in the Rookery.
I'm now more than concerned that I sit in the same stand as Hurlsburls, who has a secret obsession about bench sniffing and not watching team play!!

I am suprised that some are saying that that was NE's best game. To me he looked like same uninterested cart horse that we have to watch each week.
Totally wast of money and Aidys mistake not to take him off earlier.
Think we will see the back of Ellington in the summer, possibly Derby if what Jewell has been saying, can be believed.

Nice one Drinker, we get a tad lucky for once and the Colins and Hurleys of this world think we should be in the Ryman league. Getting Johnny Eustace banned for 4 games wasnt exactly a lottery win either. Bendean, lets not worry bout next season yet, we only would have to find 3 worse teams, the other 2 promoted teams for a start and a.n.other. Plenty of options there, dont believe the hype, the bottom half of the prem is not invincible

Morning VoR, what about making the new East Stand exclusive for Hurley, Colin and the rest of the lunatic fringe, might have to make it a bit bigger though. Hiya Ozzy, has it worn off yet? suppose you got the munchies now, you been down the 24 hour garage for some company?

VOR--watch it.....
I sit in UPPER ( natch) ROUS--Not a clapper but unlike the Rookery (named after a nest of thieves in the end of town--fact) can see the WHOLE game.
Stevie--get real pal!
i have had a real go @ Ne but yesterday he was excellent in first half.

Sagey boy, where did you dig that little Rookery nugget out from? I've always understood that a Rookery referred to a slum housing estate and i think you'll find that the area down near the Happy Hour pub is still affectionately known as the Rookery, not for one minute suggesting its still rough down there of course!! And Stevie, although NE is still way off his best, hus work rate yesterday was up there. Off to the new East Stand with Hurley and Colin for you.

unsurprising sage being in the rous, backing on to the hospital...I'm sure they've got a mental ward there, definitely the clappers stand, stems back to the shrodells days when he chanted...."the Watford, cha cha cha"
Just got back from sledging down Oxhey Park, had to come back as was mobbed by the Rugby supporters, would have thought that was Hurleys game, they're more butch for him.
Barnsley for me today...Too many sheep shaggers around this neck of the woods.
You're better off out of it sage (in crisp land)

Anybody else surprised at how many headers NE won yesterday? I'm definitely not an NE fan but I thought he showed some good technique. Sadly, DS's distribution gets worse and worse, just lumping it upfield straight to the opposition! I now think JD/LB central defence would be best partnership. Shame because I like Dans attitude, best coming off bench if needed maybe?

Sledging down Oxhey Park eh Vee, didnt even know they played rugby down there. Not sure im brave enough to diss the old lower shrodells mob, quite useful that lot back in the 80's. Perhaps they've all grown old and gone 'Upper Rous Class' now. Me thinks Gurley probably confuses the Sarries with the 'orns when he chats about 7 at the back. Havnt seen or heard from ozzy have you, bit worried about his come down this morn, must be chewing hus lips off.

I think Big D's distribution problem stems from our chronic lack of movement. He should have several short ball options but without JE the only option seems to be the lump forward to strikers who do not work the channels a la M.King. Bit late for change now but i thought Bromby was brought as a right back, with JD and DS in the middle. Has that been tried yet?

Nah T.Boy, always been in the Rooks, goes back to the days when the only thing getting to the away supporters was the flimsy wired fence....cracking stuff! old bill used to let you get on with it, QPR game springs to mind.
Just wish they'd sort out the pitch, reminds me of the one down where Croxley Sports used to play, ended me playing career there!!
bloody Rugby don't help, should bugger them off to where they came from!!

Boo Boy culture at this club has to stop. Rookery were superb in shouting down the Stewart baiters. Stewart was clearly upset.
The facts;
Jordan Stewart has been having a poor season - but he should be encouraged to help the team. He was instrumental in getting us up to the Prem last time (he clicked for last 10 games) and then one of the better players in the Prem,
The treatment of him by so called fans was a disgrace.
This STOPS now. There will be fights in the ground because there is a core 2000 who also see away games and continue to support the team "against the odds."
As fans to day we were awful. The team needed us to keep there nerves on hold - and we went quiet in the 2nd half.
FACTS - we played well 1st half and should have been clear.
Nerves set in - we have forgotten how to see out a game - and COventry took control. We are missing Eustace's clear head and control (Stoke apart.)
BUT - we kept digging in and we won. If we keep doing that we will get the confidence up - and add Hendo and Eustace to the mix - we will be okay.
And back on Boo Boy culture -
Ellington is a quality player. But he is a "confidence" palyer. He gives us some subtlety we have lacked and when he really clicks he will be a favourite.
We should also start recognizing that we should also be grateful to more ex-palyers.
When / if Mahon comes back - he should be supported. A great servant who beat the boo boys and gave us two very good seasons - but whos legs finally went.
King - if anyone boos him they will be stamped on. True he should have stayed - but ultimately he was a hero for us.
And if Matty Spring turns up in a cup game in a Luton shirt - will we boo him? Again - he was a player we all recognize as getiing into Aidys best 11.
Etc etc ... even Cook is poorly treated - he was let down by Lewington (as was Smith when he left before).
And Connolly ... oh actually ... that ones okay.
Rant over - basically. Whether you are in the stands or on the message boards - start acting like real fans and support your bloody team.
There are too many of us who have had enough of teh vitriol. And it wont be tolerated anymore.

Oi Ricky Hornet!!! You were doing so well until you mentioned M*tt*w Sp**ng. Born scum, will die scum, worst buy ever, scored a 35 yarder AGAINST us, couldnt hit a barn door FOR us, found his true level now or maybe he will with 5 more relegations. I am not a boo boy but defend the right for those that do. You or anyone else are not gods cops and the booing actually brought about the changes that saw Eustace and Bromby brought in. Your points on the Cov game are spot on but it really is up to the individuals to cheer, boo or whatever.
Oi Ricky Hornet!!! You were doing so well until you mentioned M*tt*w Sp**ng. Have to agree to disagree Sage, afraid thres no room for negotiation as far as L*t*n are concerned. Not convinced about the Rookery story, i need to check that one out. Anyone else have a theory?

As a Watford fan by default, my 8 year old chose them as his team, I have an objective view of games. If you look at recent years, apart from the last 3, Watford were a mid table championship side..FACT Since Aidy came along, they have a second chance of promotion to the Premier League...FACT.
When will some of you fans get it into your heads that Watford are punching well above their weight? The one aspect of football I can't get my head round is how tribal the fans are to each other-even of their own fans! We travelled to Burnley and the Hull debacle and have been to all the home games on a Saturday as we have season tickets in the Lower Rous.
I have been to sports in the USA and there is no fan segregation as you can have some playfull banter without the vittriol you get at football here. Fans will share a beer before, during and after the game without wanting to beat the crap out of you. Why don't you get behind the team and give them 100% support for the rest of the season? After that, feel free to whinge and moan!

The Rookery Mill was a silk mill (silk mills were a significant source of employment in the early 19th century in Watford) down by the Colne and the stand was named after it. I sit in the front row there and don't have the best view of the whole pitch, i admit, but thought JJ and Kabba worked hard today while i didn't really see NE win the headers someone mentioned.
Maybe i am a happy clapper: i certainly wouldn't boo the Golden Boys but i agree that changes should've been made when we were under the cosh. NE for CJ seemed logical at that point.
Finally, i have to point out that "win our game in hand and go top" as many said is not strictly true. We have played as many as Stoke and Hull and are below them and if West Brom win their game in hand, they'll go above us too. Win our game in hand over Bristol City, and we go above them is all that is true.
I'll be there Wednesday (and in the Moon beforehand) and will shout and cheer for 90 minutes however poorly we play. As i have said before, the idea of "[bold]supporter[/bold] " is to support, encourage and cheer on. I'll moan to mates later if we don't win.

At least when he did come on Jordon did look interested and ran his socks off!unlike 'Jobbi'show pony one footed ball wasting lightweight over rated one dimentional so called winger.who spends 90 mins keeping his hips warm with his gloves, and saying sorry to his team mates for his miss passing..another quality signing Aidy!

I just cannot understand why we had 3 defenders on the bench yesterday. Where was Ainsworth, who should have replaced the ineffective Jobi and could have created something for us - this guy is not getting a chance, so why have him?
