Giant-killers humble Hornets

Jordan Stewart in action. Picture: ACTION IMAGES

The night Watford were supposed to go back to the top of the Championship turned into an embarrassing shambles as relegation-threatened Barnsley cantered to a 3-0 victory at Vicarage Road.

The FA Cup giant-killers suffered anything but a semi-final defeat hangover as a Kayode Odejayi brace and Stephen Foster's header saw them ease their own plight, while inflicting a potential devastating blow on the Hornets' automatic promotion prospects.

Masterminded by the craft and guile of Diego Leon and Jon Macken, a Tykes side that had only won once away in the league previously and were also the lowest scorers in the division on their travels made a mockery of those statistics as they handed out a lesson in how to keep possession and use the ball effectively.

The Hornets, by contrast, looked almost clueless and quite where they go from here is anyone's guess - but definitely not the Premiership on this evidence.

Aidy Boothroyd made two changes to the side that overcame Coventry City 2-1 on Saturday, but had to do without injured match-winner Tommy Smith. This meant Jordan Stewart came into the left side of midfield, with Jobi McAnuff switching to the opposite flank, while Darius Henderson was back following his two-game ban. Steve Kabba dropped to a bench that featured Tamas Priskin following his loan spell at Preston North End, but there was no place for Collins John.

With ankle and thigh injuries ruling out inspirational midfielder Brian Howard and former Hornet Martin Devaney, Barnsley boss Simon Davey was always going to have to make two changes from the side that was beaten 1-0 by Cardiff City in Sunday's FA Cup Semi-Final, but he decided on a third. Istvan Ferenczi dropped to the bench and in came Lewin Nyatanga and Macken, both of whom were cup-tied for the trip to Wembley, along with Leon.

The Hornets started positively against the visitors, who were operating a 5-3-2 formation when not in possession, but struggled to create any chances with their early dominance of the ball. Indeed, it was the Tykes who had the first attempt in the seventh minute when Bobby Hassell struck a 20-yard effort that Richard Lee was always right behind.

The visitors nearly got through soon after when the ball was lifted through by Macken to Odejayi, who looked suspiciously offside, but superb covering by Dan Shittu saw him get back to nick the ball away, although he was unable to prevent it going out of play for the game's first corner.

Numbers two and three soon followed as the visitors continued to enjoy a decent spell before Rob Kozluk, who has previous at Vicarage Road from his Sheffield United days, picked up the game's first yellow card for a late challenge on McAnuff.

But Barnsley almost took the lead in the 16th minute when Macken's superb pass from the left released Odejayi, who homed in on the target from the right side of the area only to blaze high and wide.

The Hornets finally mustered an attempt of sorts soon after when McAnuff's attempted shot was deflected through to Luke Steele, before Macken's 20-yard effort gently looped into Lee's arms.

Barnsley were by far the more comfortable side in possession as the midway point of the first-half came and went, but in the 30th minute they nearly found themselves behind. Lloyd Doyley clipped a measured pass over the visiting defence and Stewart stole in round the back and, in truth, should have done a lot better than send a free header wide of Steele's near post.

Watford though, were starting to assert themselves, only to be undone in absolutely ridiculous fashion after 35 minutes. After a Leon shot was blocked, instead of chasing down the second ball the Hornets simply stood and watched as a lovely flick from Leon fed Macken on the right side of the area. He turned his man with ease and laid the ball across the six-yard box for Odejayi, who simply couldn't miss from barely two yards out and made it 1-0.

Henderson was lucky to escape a booking for a late challenge, but then Doyley worked a nice give-and-go down the right side of the area, before laying the ball back to Lee Williamson. He opted not to shoot and instead found Stewart to his left, but the stand-in wide man's effort was straight at Steele, although it was the home side's first on-target effort of the evening.

A stretching Shittu hooked the ball over the target as half-time approached after the Hornets were given a second bite at an opportunity following a deep Mat Sadler free-kick, before John-Joe O'Toole snatched a long-range effort off target.

Nathan Ellington also tried his luck before the break with a 20-yard effort that flew wide of Steele's right-hand post, but it was an intense chorus of boos that the home side heard as they headed down the tunnel for the interval a goal down.

The visitors were straight on the front foot after the restart, with Macken again feeding Odejayi on the right side of the area but this time he could only fire straight at Lee. They then forced a corner and from it Watford's bad night got enough worse.

There was nothing special about Leon's deep set-piece from the right, except that the home rearguard were completely oblivious to Foster coming in round the back and he powered a header into the roof of the net to make it 2-0.

Within minutes though, the Hornets were very nearly back in it. A McAnuff corner from the right was deftly flicked on by Ellington and was heading inside Steele's far post until Kozluk's timely intervention cleared the danger.

But from being back in it, Watford were dead, buried and humiliated after 54 minutes. Again Leon was the creator, this time with a gorgeous ball that bisected Leigh Bromby and Shittu, with the pair seemingly clueless as to who should take charge, and Odejayi duly capitalised with a terrific finish, guiding the ball wide of Lee from around 12 yards to make it 3-0.

Boothroyd was already readying Priskin to come on and he immediately replaced Ellington, and a minute later Kabba replaced Sadler.

The home side spurned another opportunity to break their duck after 65 minutes when, after Doyley and Stewart had been involved in the build-up on the edge of the area, McAnuff's deep cross was met by the rising Henderson at the far post, but he could only head over the top.

Barnsley immediately attacked and Odejayi should really have been celebrating a hat-trick after he shook off his man to latch onto Jamal Campbell-Ryce's cross from the right, but the two-goal striker tried to be too clever and lifted the ball over the top.

There then followed chants of "Ole" from the Vicarage Road faithful when Barnsley enjoyed a good spell on the ball, before the home fans voiced their appreciation following a barnstorming run into the area.

Henderson, who looked to be carrying a knock, was replaced by DeMerit with 19 minutes remaining, which was the signal for Shittu to go up front, before O'Toole somehow contrived to head a Bromby cross from the right against the foot of Steele's left-hand post and wide from three yards out when a goal looked inevitable.

Some Watford fans had already left by that point but with ten minutes remaining a trickle started to become a flood as several hundred upped and voted with their feet.

Those that were still inside the stadium saw the home side contrive to miss another gilt-edged chance when Bromby got to the right-hand by-line and played a great ball across the six-yard box, but O'Toole, standing in the centre of the goal, and Shittu, at the far post, both failed to make contact.

Odejayi was afforded generous applause by the Watford supporters when he was replaced by Ferenczi with four minutes remaining, but the ultimate ignominy for the home side came following the final whistle when, after those in yellow had been subjected to some sustained abuse, the Barnsley players were given a deserved standing ovation.

Oh dear.
This was certainly a terrible performance. The sad thing is that it wasn't unexpected. We have been awful for a long time and things won't improve under Hoofroyd. He has sapped all the spirit from the game and fans.I hope he is managing elsewhere next season and takes some of the awful players he has signed.
His rhetoric no longer cuts the mustard.
Here's hoping for another woeful display on Saturday. The sooner he is gone the better.

Utter shambles. Given a footballing lesson for 90mins by a bottom 6 side. No spirit, no craft, no width, no fu**ing idea - useless and toothless. No doubt this post will get the usual "if u don't like it then don't go" abuse but, quite frankly that was an excuse of a performance by an excuse for a team!

Walked out after 65 minutes, appalling.

On reflection though there is still reason to be positive. Maybe our best tactic should be to lose at WBA Saturday to ensure they get automatic & we look to win through the play-offs.

We need the belief & spirit of the temas that played Stoke off the park & held Liecester at bay, where has it all gone Aidy?

Can't analyse tonight too much just appalling on all fronts.

Oh dear what a mess we are in couldn't make it down because of work commitments so glad I missed this shambles. What do we do now I watch this message board and see as fans we try to stay positive but how long for. We cant carry on playing this style of football any more. To be frank we dont have a style and we haven't all season. With tommy not playing today, has had a huge differance but even if we had a side like Man u with Aidy in charge we will struggle.

Aidy's three years at Watford looks moore and moore like a replica of Graham Taylor's last three years at the club.

Taylor left Vicarage Road during the summer of 2001, after a promising season ended in disappoinment.

In hindsight, was his departure a good move for Watford..?
No it wasn't, and neither would it be a wise decisioon to get rid of Aidy Boothroyd.

Perhaps someone can enlighten me as to what happens on the training ground, maybe eveyone sits down in a circle and get their wool and knitting needles out. Sadly this performance was not a one off and quite simply how can anyone justify spending good money to see such rubbish.
Sorry Aidy you're out of your depth!!

All the posts so far are spot on.
I have just listened to Hoofroyd on 5Live and he gave all the same old lame excuses. He firmly believes this team has all the qualities to get promotion. He is living in Cuckoo Land.

None of the players tonight are anywhere near premiership quality and neither is Hoofroyd. As far as I'm concerned he's a busted flush, and should do us all a favour and take one of those 18 so called job offers and clear off. He has absolutely no conception of how absolutely useless his teams are. He should be fired on his decision alone to spend £3.25m of the clubs money to purchase Ellington.
I am sick and tired of watching this total rubbish.

Can anyone tell me how many more time we have to watch that lazy b.... Ellington play before we have to part with another million quid. I admit there is not much to chose between the actual contribution made by Ellington and Kabba but at least Steve gives the impression that he's trying his best.

Jamie, you were lucky. This really was a shambolic performance lacking any kind of cohesion. At least in the defeat by QPR we played a bit of football. There were absolutely no positives to take from this - it was truly woeful.

Didn't go as I'm in Geneva on business and spent the night with Euro colleagues tracking the game on my WAP phone.

I was gutted to miss the game bit now am almost thankful.

I cannot see us recovering from this to make it even via the play-offs.

Clearly we have no goal options ... and I am shocked that Boothroyd keeps playing 442 when in our last promotion he mixed the team up to play 433 on occasions and give teams problems.

Any news on Collins John? Something HAS to have happened behind the scenes there.
Posted by: bonserout, watford on 10:45pm Wed 9 Apr 08
I wonder if Boothroyd has any idea how embarrassing it is to watch the way we kick off. It sums up our whole game plan. We are not good enough to pass the ball between each other so lets kick it off the pitch. If he gets the players to do it during the televised match against WBA I hope the comentators show the same disgust as the WFC supporters obviously do. We deserve better than this. !!

i thought it would be blaspemy to suggest aidy is not up to it ... but he has lost the plot...
i for 1 am fed up with the amount of times you watch an average bottom half of the table team out play us ...
just wanna watch a team who tries to play football not just hoof it ... doyley, kabba o toole are not even footballers ...

and ellington and priskin ... so list their (alleged) qualities. ball to feet, movement etc ... so why did he buy them when they clearly do not suit his game plan ... it would nt suprise me if he tries to sign Odejayi after we made the donkey look so goo tonight!!!

BOOTHROYD OUT!!!

They were stronger than us,quicker than us and more comfortable on the ball.

Given this poor performance and recent lacklustre displays I just dont understand how we were in with a shout of going top toight.
It can only be a reflection of the other dross around us - which means we still have a play-off chance if Aidy can instill the belief that was so clearly missing tonight.

I cannot recall a Watford team who consistently put in a terrible first 45 minutes only to come out and perform even more dismally after the half time ‘team talk’. For me that says it all about Aidy. Clearly the players need more inspiration than being asked to shout “Who are we? Watford!” (or whatever dim-witted slogan was printed on the free flags that my sons had such fun destroying) three times before taking to the field.

OK, cool it guys. I couldn't make the game tonight - out of the country on business. I understand your disappointment, but hey: lay off Aidy & the team. This is a proven top leadership cadre, & you've plenty to be grateful for. A club for a start. If it wasn't for Graham, Mark, Aidy & the guys you'd me moaning about sweet F.A., right? This is a stellar high performance sports & leisure business that's going places alongside the team, & there's no place on board for cynics. If you can do any better then step right up to the plate, right now. Put your money & talent where your mouths are. The rest of us will get behind the Golden Boys for the big game on Saturday at the Hathorns. We can still get to the Promised Land. You just gotta believe.

Cheers!

To all of you who want Aidy out: it won't happen!
Why? Because there is a four man board at Watford (the Russo's are long gone, you now!), and Simpson and Ashton work very closely with Aidy - and they belivie in his abilities as a leader and manager, and so should you!

Aidy will turn this around, and the experiences he goes trough now, will make him a better manager.
Posted by: bonserout, watford on 11:04pm Wed 9 Apr 08
There were 27 Watford players listed on the programme tonight. And that was the best we've got. Even Bromby was hoofing it forward tonight. There's got to be some better players than some of these out on loan or in the acadamy or whats the point of having one.

Awful. Clueless. No passion, pride or effort.
No basics: passing, movement, organisation, shooting, etc.

Usually find something positive to comfort me but not tonight, sadly.

Barnsley deserved the win & the ovation; Macken was superb (won & kept anything that went near him) but for me, Leon was the outstanding player on view. Any chance we can buy him?

My half-full glass might just need to be washed-up now.....

With Smith injured, I don't understand why Ainsworth couldn't come in as a straight swap on the right, leave McAnuff on the left and even go 3-5-2 with Bromby, Shittu & Sadler at the back, a midfield of Ainsworth, O'Toole, Williamson, Kabba & McAnuff with Henderson & Ellington up front. We needed a win, why so many changes?

Looked to me like we did have a few "Lionel's" on the pitch - all with the surname Blair....

That was the worst spetacle i have seen ever .. even worse than southend away!

The club have smuggled the fans out of money encouraging us to buy a season ticket before the 22nd March I am sorry but from what i have seen it is absolutely disgraceful. None of our players seemed interested in the match and after the half time 'team talk' - if you could call it that- we looked totally uninspired and a team without a clue how to play football. Barnsley deserved that win - i hope they stay up they probably deserve it - they were the only players and team that turned up!

Glad im not going on saturday and i dont think i will even watch it on sky - it will be a great advert for the championship from WBA but prob severely lacking from us.

Des - I went and you would probably class me a happy clapper as I always try to find a positive in every performance.

I can't tonight.

However, I still can;t see a viable alternative to Aidy or any benefit in sacking him. To use the age-old excuse, I reckon he's as pi$$ed off as we are that the guys on the pitch tonight played as badly as that. Some of them may (hopefully?) have "earned a rest".

Still, the way this season's gone, I my just bung some dosh on a 1-0 Watford win on Saturday. Doyley to score!

Nurse, more medicine, please......

Well clappers how many times have i told you this season?

What did i predict tonight?

What have i predicted for saturday?

Boothroyd is a fraud. Pure and simple. He is a spin doctor and a propagandist, not a football manager.

Simpson and Ashton are interested only in milking the club. Boothroyd is their business agent. Any proper chairman would have sacked this useless, clueless, brainless, hopeless tosser by now.

Boothroyd was a disaster waiting to happen, a time bomb waiting to go off.

He inherited some talented players and got lucky in his first season.

Make no mistake, we have gone backwards under his clueless tactics and management. It fills my heart with joy to hear that the fans humiliated him tonight by booing off the crap in yellow shirts and then applauding Barnsley.

Lets stop all this talk of promotion, its an insult. No team deserves to go up playing like we do.

Didn't need loans signings boofers?...oh wrong again. His schoolboy blunders, if not arrested, will see this great club relegated next season, make no mistake.

Simpson, you obviously read these message boards so get your **** finger out.

Plan B: sack Boothroyd now, appoint a permanent replacement in the summer, and kick out the crap that he has signed.

I hate you Boothroyd, you have brought nothing but humiliation and dissapointment on this club over the last 18 months...so get your baga and **** off you clueless tosser!

The protests must start at the next home game or else we have much more of this to come....simpson is weak, crank up the pressure and he will capitulate, and the clown will be gone.

If I have calmed down by the morning then I may add the reasons why but I have absolutely no doubt that this team and that performance are/were the worst I have seen in 40 years of supporting Watford.

Mr Bothroyd is a one trick pony who is killing our club. We must use every means at our disposal to get rid of him and Mr Ashton before they destroy it totally.

It's almost unbearable to watch.
There's a lack of leadership on and off the pitch. How many captains have we had since Mahon left? How many incoherent team changes have we had?
There is a lack of quality but system doesn't work either. The forwards dont get the service so AB puts on two more strikers (who are even less likely to score) and Shittu up front who still dont get the service.
Terrible basic defending errors.
I cant see it happening but Simpson is ruthless enough to sack the manager at this time in the srason as he did with Lewington. Ironicaly it might be our only realistic chance of going up.

On the positive side, at least I might stand a chance of getting a ticket for Blackpool :)

Two points...
Firstly, the booing of individual players.
Mahon was forced out of the club by the treatment dished out by certain sections of the vic crowd.
I always thought, and still think, that he would never shine in attack. But what he gave us was a solid rear to the midfield, exactly what we currently lack. I honestly think we would have at least another six points with him in the side breaking up the play in front of our defence. Since his departure Jordon Stewart now takes all the flak. He is certainly not our most under-performing player, and has aquitted himself fairly when deployed in midfield (although I do admit he scares me when at full-back!). He does not deserve to be continuously booed. We (the crowd) should reserve the booing till after the whistle, directing it at the whole team if so deserved. Booing individual players simply undermines their confidence.

Secondly, AB.
I am sorry to say I think it is time for him to move on. I have come to the conclusion that the promotion season was a fluke. Had he got his first choice striker (Parkin) we would more than likely not gotten King and/or Henderson. He was lucky that those two worked so well together. Now that King has gone he is trying to recreate that partnership with Ellington/John/Prisk
in/Kabba in his place. The reality is that those players are totally unsuitable for that role and Hendersons strengths are wasted. For those strikers to thrive the ball must be played to FEET. With the ball at their feet, Ellington & Priskin look good. But chasing long balls they are ineffective. £3.5m for someone to constantly head the ball is an absolute waste.
We lack a plan B. If lumping the ball up to Henderson fails (which recently it has more often than not) we have no means of scoring.
But on the occasions when we actually play football we look pretty hot. But I always get the feeling that this is contrary to AB's instructions...
Had AB had his wish and Hendo joined Preston at the start of the season, where would we be now? Perhaps we would have developed a passing game and been succesfull but I doubt it. Full credit to Hendo for not sulking following the Fulham debacle- if my manager treated me like that I tell him where to shove it.
Then theres the likes of Rinaldi (who?). The one skillfull midfielder we have fit, potentially capable of unlocking the packed defences we encounter. Why on earth did we sign him if he was to only play in the league cup?

I am curious to know what AB says to the board when asked to comment on the performance of the team. In business, when you screw up you are expected to own up to your mistakes and outline how you will rectify the failings. Whilst it could be argued that we are stll in with a good shout of promotion, AB is absolutly guilty of the most basic sin - failing to continue to build when things go well so that there is less of a slump when things go against you.

Hopefully, come 7:20 on saturday I'll be eating these frustrated words.

The trouble is Hoofroyd has sucked the spirit out of the team, game and fans.
Who enjoys watching us?
Which player(s) enjoys the way we play?
How many neutrals will watch the game on Saturday because Watford are playing?
I hate watching us not play football.I hate watching a bunch of footballers going through the motions because they don't believe in the "style" of play.
Hoofroyd has killed my spirit and that of many others. It is for this reason I want him gone.
Hoofroyds way brings zero enjoyment(even the wins are awful spectacles.)
We deserve much better than this.We all go to be entertained and, hopefully, see Watford win.
There are no aesthetic qualities to his game plans.
This is the worst coached team I have ever seen at Watford.

Never thought I'd say it but maybe it would be best if AB left now.Teams often get a boost with a new manager, could be just enough to get us up and in any case we have nothing to lose.

The game must be described as one of the most disappointing games of Football that I have seen at Vicarage Road in the last 15 years.

Words such as numb, appalled, disgusted and embarrassing hardly express my feelings about the team that wore the Watford colours tonight.

The heart and the passion seems to be drained from the team and never have I heard the Rookery cheer not only the away team but the away team substitutions.

When you consider that the average Watford fan who hasn't got a season ticket paid around £25 is an absolute disgrace for what can be loosly described as entertainment.

We looked more like the team who were occupying the relegation places and there was no inspiration to be found anywhere in the Watford team tonight.

When you consider where we were this time two seasons ago when we were in a similar position we had players who fought for the cause who could score goals, and defend and score from set pieces.

Seriously, How can Nathan Ellington really justify around £15,000 a week and Collins John a similar figure? It just seems to me that Watford are a cash cow to the players who really don't care about the cause!

Forget the Premiership we'll be lucky to be in the Championship by the end of next season.

Having got back from the usual 200 mile round trip a bit early--even I left 20 mins from time-and having listened to a clearly shaken aidy on 3cr-i think he seems to be letting it show & that is affecting player confidence.

it has been coming in many ways--if we do score first we get nervous--if we do not score first we get desparate!

All those who slate JS would surely accept that he tried very hard but EVERYONE else was shocking.

Neil Price thought Bromby was good--JESUS-- the third goal was just like the third @ Hull-outpaced & overpowered for both.

It was nervous, clueless & totally unacceptable AT ANY LEVEL OF FULL TIME PRO FOOTBALL!

It was clear that there is a complete lack of confidence & belief and that is the responsibility of management.

he has lost his nerve.

The first 2 subs(TP & SK for MS & NE ) I called for @ H Time--NOT when the game was totally lost!

No chance for Auto & I really do not fancy us in the playoffs-but of course we hope still.

Idiots wanting us to lose @ WBA are not fans & not bright as that will not force a mngmnt change but if we fail to go up he msay well offer to resign.

Meanwhile we must support him & the team & hope for the best,but.....to not have LA on bench when TS is out is stupid.

Aidy surely cannot have the dressing room on board with these kind of tactics.

Finally only Colin will rejoice but the real fans will not.

Perhaps the players have decided they do not want promotion? As we all agree that none of them are really prem. standard , any contracts from now on would not be renewed in the prem. Maybe the conspiracy was hatched in McDonalds prior to training yesterday?

the club as a whole is corrupt. the reason burkinshaw 'left' was because he did not agree with the way we play so he was asked to leave. how can boothroyd ignore the expereince of a man like KB? our chief scout was sacked because he didnt agree with the signing of Ellington and made his opinions known. I bet he is laughing his socks off. Boothroyd wants a team of YES MEN at the club. anyone that has opinion is booted out. i am sick to death of hearing the same old sh}t that comes from his mouth. Not once, not twice but fcuking week in week out. He has no idea and has been found out. This season has been one of the worst to watch in god knows how long. awful. the team of 2006 would walk all over this one without question. despite saying last year that the style would slowly change, it hasnt. its about time boothroyd and or the board listen to people who know what they are talking about.
get him out.

"Even if we had a side like Man u with Aidy in charge we will struggle"

Struggling in the top 6 all season, what an absolute shambles our club is!

Went to the match tonight and yes, it was a nightmare. What upset me more were certain sections of the crowd though. I don't know of any other set of fans who turn on their own team so easily, or single out individual players as hate figures and boo them before they even touch the ball. You may think Boothroyd's positive thinking and psychology are all mumbo jumbo and that's an opinion you're entitled to. All I will say though is working against any kind of positivity, confidence or self-belief running through the team are the supporters who go to matches and do not support. You wonder why our away record is better than our home record? The answer may well be down to the fact that fans that travel with the team support them, rain or shine, whatever the performance. That breeds confidence and gives the team a boost.

Yes, the players have to give us something to cheer, something they did little of tonight, but if certain fans were more positive it could make a massive difference.

I had a row with another Watford fan in the Rookery tonight and I know for a fact that other people are aware that as Watford supporters we no longer stand as one. There is a divide between those who support their team through thick and thin and those who sap all of the confidence out of their team and victimise certain players, however well they play.

Personally, I've had enough. This site seems to attract the majority of the boo boys and fickle fans who seem to think Watford have never lost a match 3-0 before and that being in the top 6 ALL SEASON is a failure. I won't be making any more comments on this site, I've had enough of the slanted journalism and negative 'fans' that fill its pages.

Let's hope for your sake we bring back Ray Lewington so you can either be content with mid-table drudgery and the odd cup run or you stop coming to make way for true fans who get behind their team.

Cheerio.
