Leigh Bromby celebrates the opening goal. Picture: Action Images

Watford remain fifth in the Championship after holding on for a 1-1 draw at the Hawthorns this afternoon.

Leigh Bromby gave Watford the dream start by scoring after just six minutes, but Leon Barnett levelled things up at the start of the second and the Hornets were forced to withstand a second-half onslaught from West Brom to post their eighth draw in 11 matches.

The draw prevented West Brom opening up a five-point gap over the Hornets and means the top five sides in the Championship are now separated by just three points.

Watford made the perfect start, producing the perfect response to Wednesday night's abject display by opening the scoring after just six minutes.

An inswinger corner from Jobi McAnuff picked up out John-Joe O'Toole but he saw his close-range header saved at point-blank range by Dean Kiely. However Bromby was first to react and he prodded the ball home from inside the six-yard box. It was Bromby's first goal for the club since he arrived from Sheffield United and it couldn't have come at a better time.

The goal suited Watford down to the ground, enabling them to sit back, flood the midfield and play on the counter attack.

West Brom, as expected, enjoyed the lions' share of possession, impressively zipping the ball about on an immaculate pitch at the Hawthorns but they struggled to get in behind Watford's disciplined defence.

With John Eustace providing a shield in front of the back four, Watford managed to keep the Baggies at arms' length, restricting them to long-range efforts. Neil Clement whistled a 40-yarder over the bar, Kevin Phillips did the same just after the half-hour mark and then Phillips, again, sent a free-kick from the edge of the box sailing into the stands.

Watford were content to hit the Baggies on the break and threaten from set-pieces, something they did twice in quick succession around the 40th minute mark.

Tamas Priskin saw a header from a McAnuff free-kick brilliantly saved by Kiely, although the Hungarian really should have scored from six yards out. And then from the second corner in succession, Bromby fired over the bar after a corner from Jordan Stewart had caused havoc.

It was Albion's turn to threaten from a set-piece just before half-time, Clement crashing a free-kick against the top of the bar and over for a corner. At the other end, a cut back from Tommy Smith picked out McAnuff but after checking inside, he was quickly closed down and sent his rising effort over the bar.

Boothroyd would have been delighted with his team's energetic and disciplined first-half display and he was at the centre of an on-the-pitch team huddle at the start of the second, no doubt asking for more of the same.

However it was Tony Mowbray who was the happy of the two managers after just four minutes of the seconed half when Leon Barnett glanced in a free-kick from Zoltan Gera. Watford had been guilty of giving away too many free-kicks towards the end of the first-half and this time they paid a heavy price.

The Hornets were quickly back on the attack though, and it required a wonderful sliding tackle from Paul Robinson to deny Darius Henderson who was just about to pull the trigger.

The momentum was now with the Baggies and Ishmael Miller was becoming an increasingly influential figure. Just before the hour mark the strapping forward muscled his way past Bromby down the left and forced a smart near-post save from Lee. Just 60 second later the keeper watched Barnett head wide after yet another intricate move.

Lee was forced to make a double save on 65 minutes as West Brom upped the ante. A wonderful piece of skill from Phillips, who beautifully cushioned a clearance kick from Kiely, led to some intricate play from Morrison. He eventually unlocked the Watford defence with a lovely chip that gave Miller a sight of goal. He was thwarted by a brave block from the on rushing Lee who then denied Morrison following up.

In an attempt to stem the tide, Boothroyd summoned Adrian Mariappa from the bench and asked him to track the influential Jonathan Greening. Mowbray responded by replacing Morrison with Chris Brunt, providing the Baggies with some natural width down the left.

West Brom played some sizzling football throughout but it was from a route-one move that led to a golden chance for Phillips. A raking pass from Carl Hoefkens dropped over the head of Bromby and left Phillips one on one with Lee.

But the former England striker failed to generate enough power on his header and Lee saved comfortably.

Watford felt they had strong claims for a penalty when Barnett, under pressure from Shittu, handled a long throw from Bromby, but referee Mike Dean waved away the visitors' protests.

The Hornets carried a greater attacking threat in the last 15 minutes but it was Albion who came agonisingly close to getting their noses in front when Gera saw a right-footed shot whistle past the far post on 80 minutes. Bednar went just as close minutes later, instinctively sticking out a leg to deflect a cross from Brunt just over the bar.

Boothroyd made a double attacking change on 85 minutes, replacing John-Joe O'Toole and Jobi McAnuff with Steve Kabba and Nathan Ellington who was given a hostile welcome by the fans.

But neither side could find a winner and honours ended even.

Coudln't make to west brom as had no one to give me a lift and no one wanted to go in ma family because of wednesday, but watched it on sky much better, deffensively excellent, but attacking needs to improve. Play like that towards the run in.
We have a chance
Keep the Faith in boothroyd and lets get behind the lads at home.

Better. Much Better.

We may have to suffer the play offs still - but this gives me faith that we have the belief to do this.

And sod it. Play off Final is on my birthday - so why not!

Eustace is clearly such a difference. And priskin was so unlucky for 2-0 chance.

True we got cut apart occasionally but equally we had chances and 2 possible pens.

The other teams have some tough fixtures to come and if Wolves beat West Brom I still take us and Stoke to go up.

CMON!

For me--R Lee MOM-brilliant--full backs excellent-C halves good Je well off pace--JJ excellent--TP tepid display jody good first but poor second half--tommy too deep (instructions?) DH tremendous.

jUST READ REPORT--when you see whole game rather than TV screren you see how often Je was caught out of position. I rate him but his worst game so far. JJ was the midfield driver today very clearly.

What a difference between four days! I have resigned myself that we will be in the playoffs and there is no failure in that. It's just a shame that performances like today haven't been mirrored in more games. Obviously we missed Eustace recently but if we can keep free of injuries and suspensions then who knows? However the events and some of Adies comments of this past week have still left a sore point with me. However, as a fan, I still wish everyone connected to the club nothing but success. Palace will be another tough game. Cheers.

why o why does boothroyd keep playing that **** useless jordan stewart..he has to be one of the worst ever players to put on the watford shirt,,,but he keeps putting him into the team..but then again...boothroyds right,he is in charge,he makes no mistakes

Much better performance at a place where we lose most times,Eustace makes a big difference and definately the captain, why do our set pieces away from the vic look more dangerous and we seem to pass the ball much more away from the vic
CONFUSED from the social club

Sadly, what we miss is a great striker, not one of ours' are in the top 15 chasmpionship top scorers. The defence is pretty good. The midfield, and, especially Tommy Smith works hard but we lack a good striker and that bit of extra quality. Since Adam Johnson left we've not been the same side! If we do get up there then we should go in for AJ no matter what he costs. AB knows quality when he sees it. The board are keeping the 'Orns' financially stable and we should get behind them all at the Vic. This is from a life long supporter since the 1950s.

Funny how people see different things.......

I though JS was great and was never caught out of position.

JM just too lightweight.

sorry sage, thought DS MOM controlled Miller thoughout, albeit with last ditched tackles when caught out of position.

Very enjoyable game but wished we would have more pace upfront.

Didn't think much of Eustace today.

Overall very good, hope we keep it up!!

Bronby back to form except one near **** up. D.S superb at stopping attacks but his distribution seems to be getting worse. If he could just win the ball and pass it 5 yards to someone who can pass. (preferably in a Watford shirt)

Its weird how people see things differently.

Lee, Shittu and Bromby were awesome.

Eustace was good, O'Toole is so sh!t its unbelievable - can't believe some saw it the other way round.

JJ got Eustace a booking as well!

McAnuff is so physically weak its untrue.

Could have had it wrapped up by half-time with priskin header and McAnuff chance.

A good point...fought well.

The bad news we are chasing shadows and not winning. The passing was awful..I found the TV coverage intersting you see the game differently from being in the rookery.

Sage said JJ was excellent...Is that really how you gauge 1 pass/header in 5 finding a team mate. Same could be said of Darius and when he had a chance of a header Tamas took it a yard earlier and didnt score, not that I blame Tamas. Both centre backs seemed to suffer from incisive runs from the opposition at times but still did an awful lot of good work. Thought Jordan was OK and TS looked a little sore and was very quiet in first half.

If we had beaten Barnsley it would have been a brilliant point.

Never mind we still have a chance and the others have their problems so cmon lads and well done Aidy...the attitude was so much better.
Posted by: Mark, Watford on 10:14pm Sat 12 Apr 08
At least the players got some pride back and we defended really well against a top side.

Now if only that had happened against the likes of Barnsley eh!?

I've not seen the Hornets in the flesh this season but having watched the game at the Hawthorns on tele I can't fathom what all the fuss is about on how we play.I thought it an excellent game and Watford more than held their own.

Very good in first half. JJ made the goal and he plays well alongside JE. JE lucky not to get sent off for second bookable and gave away a stupid free kick for their equaliser.

What did Aidy say at half-time, cos we were totally outplayed at the beginning of the second half?

Priskin unlucky in first half not to score. I was confused by subbing of Priskin for Mariappa. What was that about??

Lee was outstanding and the back 4 were generally well disciplined and solid in defence, with Smith helping out on the right.

Henderson was hard working but not very effective.

However it was a much better performance apart from the first 30 mins of the second half. Still 2 points off auto promotion, with S City to play B City and WBA to play Wolves. What a finale to a strange season of ups and downs.

Agreed much better, but why do we keep giving away soft goals from set pieces? Two games two free headers. Thought referee was very keen to penalise us especially Darius when he was elbowed in the back of the head and the free kick went the other way! If it had been DH, he would have been off.
Posted by: Bendean, Snorbens on 8:49am Sun 13 Apr 08
Effective, almost 4:3:3 formation with TS playing deeper but missed his thrust going forward. Agree with Sage, JJ so strong for 19 yearold with good touch and vision. He'll be a great player next season.

Still miss that link between midfield and attack, especially when our wingers are marked out of it.

Why doesn't LD get tighter to his winger - nearly cost us 2 goals yesterday.

frankly i`m so sad I got back from match & watched recording on TV--confirmed my original views.

would not disagree that C halves could easily have got MOM but LEE made 4 point saving stops, hence my choice.

If anyone did not see JJ as best man on pitch in first half I`m stunned!

won the ball-played one-twos--his header blocked for goal.etc.

Second half greening took over.
JE gave away too many free kiicks due to being off pace(inc foul for equaliser)

tommy clearly not100% & played in a deeper role.

Anti JS stuff pathetic- excellent first half & decent second--doyley played his man out of game & got him subbed!

AM brought on to stop greening--worked mostly.

Chris did you go/ if not how much of game do yoy think TV shows? You see nothing of off the ball work!

Not really likely to agree with you much--you want R Lee dropped!

Frankly had too much of TP & NE indifference--I would play SK for run in.

This site is starting to get better again, at least we have now got some decent debates going on and its not just a slagging match all the time anymore.
It really shouldnt matter if you agree or dont its only an opinion and no one is right or wrong ....
My opinion for what its worth ...
I think we will just about hang onto a play off place 5th or 6th, and with the playoffs you just never know what will happen, and our record is pretty good so far.
with regards to the West Brom game I think we did ok and as much as they had more possesion we still created more chances in the first 20 minutes then we did in the whole game on wed ........
I think our front players are lacking in confidence and we really need someone to score in the next 3 games just in case we only make the play offs.. Although Eustace did not have his best game I still believe he is the difference, if you watch him he is talking all the time, organising and motivating and we just dont get that experience when he is not there, he was lucky to stay on tho !!. shittu and bromby had good games but big danny did lose his man for their goal ....
Smith worked really hard and although he wasnt at his attacking best he did a solid job, he is my player of the season hands down.
Jordan had one of his better games but he is not in the same league as Robbo who looked solid, did some quality tackles and his distribution has improved significantly since being at west brom, how we could have done with his no nonsense attitude in the run in.
Anyway fingers crossed for the run in ... come on you orns !!!!!!!

Best bit of entertainment for a while. Could easily have gone either way. Where are all the negative posters- Some idiots booing JS at start- lucky for them they moved- good result- could have been great.
Like most take what comes from club with huge pinch of salt but KA break the habit and lets have a positive report- if you get a bit of balance it might mean you move on form small town journalism and do us all a favour.
A number of debateble free kicks against and at least we made some decent chances.
Everyone 110% behind the team for rest of season- boo boys stay at home- if we all pull together it can be done- if we implode we only have ourselves to blame- supporters as well. And who was the **** have a pop at alec on Weds- get a grip mate.

Huge turn aroumd on the home defeat to Brom. I'm no happy clapper but to win you have to think positive- basic sports psychology
Posted by: Paul, Watford on 9:44am Sun 13 Apr 08
I'm normally always critical of JS, but in fairness he had one of his better games. Still not what I would call reliable though.

JE made a difference today, although not as strong as we have come to expect, but must be difficult coming into WBA away after 4 games out.

Got very frustrated with JM - far too easily pushed off the ball or constantly comes out second in challenges.

Palace game is massive - Warnock will have his team up for it big time.

Sage, you know a thing or 2 about coaching. Can you say why Priskin came off and was replaced by Mariappa and not Kabba or Ellington? I personally thought Priskin had one or 2 good moments and he was unlucky not to score with a header in the first half, and he was no less efective than DH, but I know you don't agree. I certainly wouldn't have swapped him for a defender/midfielder. I thought Mariappa looked lost and never got into the game, but Aidy likes him.

Have to say better first half BUT we have thrown away this league with a manager who lost the plot ,we were hanging on and being outclassed in second half ,if players like Priskin get in this team it says it all ,we were playing with 10 men ,Having sold the one striker who would have got us up in King we have nothing else ,we will still be lucky to make play offs and that would be FAILURE ,be as positive as you like and i understand that after the debacle of wednesday BUT remember we were 9 points clear in this league and the lack of quality additions to squad in Janauary has cost us ,Yesterday once again Boothroyd goes defensive ,the quote that Boothroyd made a double attacking change on 85 minutes sums him up !!! THANKS for 2.5 years ago BOOTHROYD but time is up as far as i am concerened sick of the crap football mind numbing tactics and lack of quality WARNOCK up next he hates us should be final nail in coffin for us and let's see how positive everyone is then !

Enjoyable game and well earned point. Good defensively, especially in 1st half. Thought Eustace made a big difference. Did foul a lot but had to take a booking for JJ who also did well. Jordan had a good game and looked solid. Shame Mcanuff faded in 2nd half as he was a big threat 1st half. Main thing is what a joy it was watching the game with fans who support the team. If the rookery was like that every week it would be a totally different (excellent) atmosphere. Palace will be tough but we can do it!

Simmo, you sum up why Vic Road is now full of fans who just want a moan and crave on slagging the team/manager off. Yesterdays tactics were good. Quite deep defending but it broke a lot of the baggies attacks down or made them shoot from distance. When they did get through Lee was at his best. A great turnaround from Wed. Clubs like Leicester who change their managers all the time you will find languishing in the bottom half of the table. Football hasn't been great but we're 3 points off top spot with 3 to go. Support the team for f**cks sake. It was great at the Hawthorns with fans who get behind the team. I'm dreading the sniping that will no doubt be in abundance on Saturday. Well done Watford on a well earned point.

I think aidy was looking to pack midfield, and keep the point playing 4-5-1,so then to take off 2 midfielders and replace with 2 forwards, was to say the least,a little confusing to me

I know that everyone gets frustrated with Priskin for not chasing lost causes, but I went yesterday and have to say that I cannot remember the last time Henderson looked like he was going to get us a goal. In fact I cannot remember the last time he looked like he was going to make a goal for us. He fights hard and his effort is great, but he just isn't a goal threat. How many has he scored since Marlon left? Priskin played a lovely back-heel and was very unlucky with a good header and you can see he does have quality. All I ever notice Henderson do is head the ball on to one of the opposition. It is surely no coincidence that we scored two goals when he was suspended.
Every week Kevin Afflek berates our style, while singing the praises of Darius Henderson. Surely people can see that all he does is perpetuate it. Perhaps Darius would actually benefit from from some balls to feet, but in the meantime we have a league to win and need a forward who might score between now and the end of the season.

Whilst I do actually agree with some of your points above I was refering to the support over 90 minutes which at the Vic is currently awful and spoiled by, even when winning, the booing of individual players which is just not right. I don't agree with all the signings and goings on off the field but some people have a huge anti-boothroyd agenda and while we are only a win off an automatic prom spot, i find it hard to stomach the abuse he gets from some postings especially Colon (L*t*n ST holder). Lets not forget who we are and where we were under Lewington.

Effort, commitment and work-rate was infinitely better.

Still think we are too quick to resort to thumping the ball forward. We can play a bit, but never give ourselves the chance.

It seemed to me we were happy to take on the appearance of the underdog - grab the early goal then park the bus across the goal in the second half.

We need to be going into the play-offs confident we can win games, rather than aiming 'not to lose'.

Whoever goes up, loomk at the league table: all the main contenders have lost about 10 games so far. It's hard to fancy any of them making an impression next season.

Watched a recording of match sage and my comment regarding JJ stands albeit he was slightly better at finding a man in first half.....if players weren't running for him i would not be surprised.

I thought when we were under the cosh in the second half we failed a lot of the time to hold the ball up to ease the pressure on the back line and JJ and JE were almost making it a six flat line except when Shittu had a spell of playing their forwards on side albeit i thought he played well.

Agree with sage that kabba needs to start with hendo...he gives 100% and has speed...he would be a great sub after 70mins against a tiring defence but not after 85 mins.

All to play for and promises to go to the wire for some teams i just hope we are one of them....and Bomber it was one of our best efforts of 2008.

Simmo -

As you are such a long term fan, then you like me, will remember the problems GT had first time round in building a team to get to the Old Divvy 1.

He made mistakes and we have a young manager in the same mould.

Even if we dont make it up this year - I'm sticking with Aidy.

He has re-built a side that lost Foster (no-blame) Young (No choice) Bouazza(demanded move and money made it a no-brainer)and King (clealry disrupting squad and unfortuately let go for 'greater good') and just needs to get 1 or 2 more pieces in place to turn it around fully.

He has to learn from mistakes - GT made them to you know! Nordin Wooter anyone?

Who would we get to replace Aidy? Someone totally inferior I can tell you.

We have no right to go straight back up - look at West brom, Palace last year, Sheff U and Charlton this.

And of the 3 relegated teams we are the only ones with any chance - and its a bloody good chance - cos reality is we have lost very few since King left - and ultimately its not defeats that will cost us auto promotion but not scoring one of 2 pens against Bristol and Stoke within 4 days.

But we are hard to beat (generally- and especially in the big games) so lets hold our nerve here.

Performance at WBA keeps us in it & three wins will I think see us up. Obviously we need a Stoke V Bristol draw & a few favours elsewhere but everyone is choking. Worrying that we have to play Palarse at home as they & Colin W*nker always seem to do well at the Vic.

Scoring as we all know is a major issue & I think 4-3-3 with Smith playing in behind Hendo & Priskin is the way to go. A midfield of JE -JJ & LW or AB. Smith looked really good in central midfield against Stoke. Tamas's work rate is akin to NE but I think given a chance in the box he is most likely to hit the target - really unlucky with header against Baggies.

Let's worry about the inconsistency & style of play in the close season. Yes we have problems & high expectations only exacerbate these. Aidy doesn't help himself sometimes with his spin & we can only speculate where we might be without him. For my part I am going to keep the faith & give 100% - If the players do the same I will be happy whatever

Thanks Sage. I knew I could rely on you for a sensible answer.

I think that in the long term I would keep TP and play him as far forward as I can. He is very good in the box and is possibly the best finisher we have at the moment. He would need good supply from the wings, but yesterday we could do that as McAnuff was getting much across and Smith was busy helping his defence. Henderson can not be faulted for his work rate, but he is a bit of a donkey. He does get fouled a lot in a game, but has very few actually awarded -he suffers a bit like Crouch, in that he looks like a cumbersome lump and so does not get the benefit of the doubt, but does get penalised when his opponents go down. DH did not have anybody making runs off him to pick up the knock downs, that being the case surely it would have been more effective to take him off, because he had no more support after TP went off than he did before.

This was a better performance, but we need even better for the last 3 matches and we need goals - I can't see where they will come from.

Sage and onion boy, for all your intellectual postering, you are just a vile, abusive little prat.

If you think that was a good performance, then you really are lost...****.

VoR, you are such a sad git. It is good to respect the sensible opinions of those who know and easy to ignore the rantings of mad fools.

late posting cos i spent the weekend in brum. to my eye JJ seemed poor yesterday (though i think he'll only improve): runs around a lot but not to great effect and one mistake in front of our end in first half cost JE a card.

Lee MOM of course but DS massive yesterday. both LD and JS did well from where i sat but unlike other posters i haven't seen it replayed.

i too don't see where the goals from open play are going to come from but if TS goes back to his normal position against the other Colin W*nker's team, perhaps. Kabba and Priskin to start with DH coming on after 70?

was good not to feel the tangible frustration in the stand that happens at the Rookery as soon as we concede.

All in all, though, the tone of posts on the site after this game show that our fans are a bit fickle.

Watford boy--it is all opinion of course but if no DH what do you think will happen? as he won 755= of balls punted up to him they would come straight back--just like Hull & also v barnsley when he was not on his game.

we are not suddenly going to pass the ball just cos he`s not there! did you go to hull?

complete madness in my view honestly.

Clearly though we see game very differently given your JJ points--could not disagree more-yes his (one) error caught JE out but it was LD error that caught JJ out in first place.

If you are going to cite one mistake how can you be so in favour of DS who went to sleep for their goal?

HH final point today.

You say yourself that DH has no-one making runs off him--HOW TRUE! THAT is what limits his impact- & that is the fault of TP/NE whoever--hardly an issue with Marlon was it?

You are fixing what is not broken & will break it in the process.

NO! get an effective partner--I know we do not have one but taking DH out will weaken us massively.

SK is only willing runner & I would play him or even LA then TP & then NE BLOODY DESPERATE AIN`T IT?

Sage

You are spot on with the Henderson situatio. he hasn't got any worse, he is merely suffering from the lack of anyone effective alongside hime.

With King there, he had a player who took a portion of the responsiblility, gave defenders plenty to think about and was smart enough to get on the end of Henderson's knock-downs and lay-offs.

Henderson is still doing what he did - but we have no-one able to do any of what King did.

I cannot see any justifiable reason for leaving Henderson out - that would only mean playing two inadequate forwards instead of one.

Sadly, this was a problem that has been apparent since King went, and one which I thought Collins John was supposed to solve.

But apparently he's not fit . . .

Now there's a surprise; no post from colon after he predicted a WBA rout. Still drowning his sorrows after L*t*n's relegation, probably.

From the Sky coverage, it looked a far better organised team - and is JE's influence, I reckon. He may not do the "obvious" stuff but he gets the team together, organises them and plays the link man role well. That all helps the younger lads around him. I really do wonder what the previous 4 results might have been had he been there. It's gutting to think one ridiculous ref's decision may have changed the course of our season.

After the dross on Wednesday, I thought we played very well in patches at WBA. We looked bright, lively, and put some passes together, and they clearly couldn't cope with the set pieces. Thought Shittu was fantastic, but he just keeps getting caught out of position. Most of all, well done boothroyd! You haven't lost the dressing room, and whilst your tactics are utterly one dimensional and loathsome, you got the team to play the way you wanted, and a point up there is a good point. Shame the desire to win a game with some bold substitutions 5 minutes from time came so late in the season. I remember you letting only four players go into the Spurs box when we had a free kick 30 yards out 5 minutes from the end of the 0-0 draw at The Vic. Sad. Highlight of the match was in H2, when Doris wins Lee's hoof and then chases 15 yards to win the 2nd ball. Magnificent. I really can't see us getting 9 points in the 3 games, but if they play with the same sense of purpose on saturday, at least the crowd will get fired up. Aidy, I've no idea what you get up to all week. certianly the tactics never change, but please, please can you get DS and LD to recognise a Watford shirt, and try and pass it too them. They're professional footballers and they've loads of time to practice this simple art. Remember, the oppo can't score when we have the ball Anyway, for once, well done.

I agree about Colin...all for people moaning and ranting when the team serve up total crap like the Barnsley game and other recent games but he does seem to disappear when we get even a half decent result..
