Promotion in the balance
Tommy Smith in action against Palace this afternoon.
Tommy Smith in action against Palace this afternoon.

Watford's chances of automatic promotion are hanging by a thread after they suffered a 2-0 defeat to play-off rivals Crystal Palace at Vicarage Road this afternoon.

The Hornets didn't deserve to fall behind to a goal from substitute Paul Ifill with 20 minutes remaining, but once they did the response was very disappointing and a second effort from Victor Moses soon after lifted the Eagles to within one point of the Hornets.

This was a markedly improved performance on the debacle against Barnsley in the Hornets' last home outing but a record of one win in 12 and three goals in the last six matches at Vicarage Road tells its own story.

Indeed, had Ipswich Town not equalised at Wolves to secure a 1-1 draw, Aidy Boothroyd and his men would have been looking very nervously over their shoulders because Mick McCarthy's men would have been four points adrift and with a game in hand. As it is, still look relatively safe for a shot at the end-of-season lottery despite their poor form.

Boothroyd chose to keep faith with the same starting XI that drew 1-1 at West Bromwich Albion last time out, while Neil Warnock made just the one change to the team that defeated Scunthorpe United 2-0, with Matt Lawrence replacing Danny Butterfield.

Watford sought to gain the early initiative against a Palace side playing a variation on 4-5-1, with Scott Sinclair and Moses providing the support for Clinton Morrison from out wide. And it was the home side that had the first attempt in the third minute, but John Eustace sliced his attempted 22-yard drive so much it didn't even go out of play.

The game then became fairly even until the eighth minute when the Hornets really should have gone in front. Tommy Smith did superbly well to wriggle away from a couple of challenges on the right side of the area and send over a fine cross which Jobi McAnuff, attacking the edge of the six-yard box from the opposite side of the area, glanced down and narrowly wide of the beaten Julian Speroni's left-hand upright.

The visitors had a good counter-attacking opportunity a couple of minutes later, with Moses leading the charge, but, with Sinclair and Morrison in good positions inside of him, the left-sided player held on to the ball for too long and Lloyd Doyley was able to get back and make a fine challenge. However, from Moses' resultant throw, Clint Hill found some space at the near post to clip the ball into the six-yard area and Morrison hooked the ball past Richard Lee, only to see a certain goal prevented by Jordan Stewart's fine positioning on the goalline.

The Eagles were forced into an early change in the 20th minute when Butterfield replaced the injured Lawrence, and soon after Jose Fonte picked up the game's first yellow card for clearly pulling back Tamas Priskin. From Stewart's resultant free-kick Darius Henderson headed wide of Speroni's right-hand post from ten yards.

However, the visitors were enjoying a good spell, only to almost fall behind in the 31st minute when a long Leigh Bromby throw was headed clear to McAnuff, who connected superbly with a right-footed volley from 12 yards, but saw it deflected behind by a full-length diving opponent. Following that set-piece Watford forced a second that McAnuff took and Henderson rose highest to head past Speroni, only to see the goal disallowed for pushing.

The temperature continued to rise three minutes later when Tom Soares went through McAnuff and was rightly booked, but the Hornets wide-man also saw yellow for his reaction. Shaun Derry then lashed a 25-yard effort over at the other end, before Priskin was released on the left side of the area and got free of his man, only to fire straight at Speroni.

The Hornets continued to up the ante as the interval approached and a minute into injury-time Butterfield became the third Palace player to be booked for illegally curtailing McAnuff's burst down the left.

Following the free-kick Watford forced their seventh corner of the half from which Bromby headed straight at Speroni. However, as the players broke back upfield for the resumption of play, the Palace keeper became involved with John-Joe O'Toole and the pair picked up bookings five and six of a goalless opening period.

Watford were straight back on the front foot after the resumption and it took an excellent interception from Ben Watson to prevent O'Toole from getting on the end of a Henderson flick.

Palace's first opening of the half came on 51 minutes when Morrison's square pass allowed Moses to run at the right side of the home defence, but after going outside Doyley the winger fired high and wide of Lee's right-hand post. Soon after Watson tried his luck from 25 yards, but the Hornets keeper was always right behind it.

But after 56 minutes though, the home side spurned another great opportunity to take the lead. Doyley was the creator with a fine run and cross down the right which picked out Henderson at the far post. He could only head back across the target to Priskin, who, having initially looked like he wouldn't get there, headed beyond Speroni only to see the ball rebound away off bar.

However, the Eagles responded, with Moses firing in an angled effort that was rewarded with his side's first corner of the match after 63 minutes. This was taken by Watson and Lee had to be alert to deal with the vicious in-swinger.

Warnock made his second change two minutes later, bringing on Ifill for Sinclair, and almost immediately the substitute got away from Dan Shittu on the right side of the area to send over a dangerous cross.

Another opportunity came and went for the Hornets in the 70th minute when a long Bromby free-kick was knocked back to Henderson to O'Toole. But the young Irishman had to rather dig the ball out and could only shoot straight at Speroni.

Within a minute Palace were in front. The home side failed to deal with a ball that was clipped back into the area on the right and Ifill cut inside Stewart before unleashing a left-footed half-volley that swerved away from Lee and crashed into the back of the net off the inside of his right-hand post to make it 1-0.

Boothroyd was readying Mat Sadler to come on before the goal anyway, but in light of going behind the decision to take off McAnuff and switch Stewart to the right side of midfield was interesting to say the least.

But four minutes later Watford's promotion hopes were looking even more fragile. Morrison found Moses in space on the left side of the area and he turned Doyley inside out before sliding the ball under Lee from the left side of the area to make it 2-0.

The Hornets responded with Shittu seeing a long-range effort blocked and then Henderson got on the end of a Stewart free-kick from the right, but could only loop the ball into Speroni's arms.

Priskin then had another effort deflected behind before the Palace keeper did well to punch away an in-swinging Stewart corner under intense pressure.

Warnock made his third and final change after 84 minutes, bringing on Carl Fletcher for Morrison, and then after a staggering eight minutes of waiting around with his coat on Nathan Ellington finally entered the fray with three minutes remaining at the expense of Stewart.

However, it then took an excellent tip over from Speroni to prevent O'Toole from pulling a goal back with a looping shot before Shittu became the third Hornet to be booked for a late challenge on the keeper.

But an Ellington free-kick into the wall, a follow-up from the striker into the same place and a header from the substitute over the top, that was it as Watford's promotion prospects were dealt another blow.

I dont think losing 2-0 can really be called "markedly improved performance", it is utter rubbish. With Marlon King and Ashley Young sold I think all Watford supporters could have seen this happening from the start. Time for big changes or prepare for Division One in 2010.

Oh dear, oh dear. Didn't go today - couldn't face it and very glad I didn't. Three home goals in six games says it all.
I hope there is no more talk of promotion, just about a massive clearout, cut our losses with useless NE, move on all the current strikeforce and put AB in charge of hospitality where he can spin to his hearts content.

Just heard that clown on three counties...what a deluded arrogant piece of **** he is.

Next week i'll be at the game and i'll be starting a SACK BOOTHROYD campaign.

Sod the stupid yellow flags, this idiot has to go for the future of our club.

If he stays over the summer then by the time the board sack him before xmas it will be too late.

An inflated wage bill, ground devlopment, and relegation to league one...we could go the way of Luton. I truly believe we are on the verge of disaster...unless this idiot is sacked.

He has lost the dressing room that much is clear...c'mon guys forget the success of two years ago....we are in a mess.

He must go!!!!!

According Official stats Marlon King still the Watford Player who has had the most shots at goal. I am really sorry but we have flushed 3.5m down the bog with NE, a player who was even below a 20st John Hartson in the pecking order at WBA. Lets hope Paul Jewell fancies signing him and Jason Roberts for Derby Co.

I saw Aidy mention that from time to time he sees flashes of Prem quality in NE, By prem quality is he refering to the ability to earn 20K from sitting on the bench or playing in the reserves (MJ).
I really think we are on the edge of blowing it big style !!! this could have been the most important season to get back up to the Prem, to gain the finances to continue the redevlopment of the club and infrastructure. Of course we thank aidy for getting the ball rolling in 2006, but this season was our chance , the competition within our division is ( on paper) weak(er) this year (anyone fancy Reading,Fulham,Brum, Leeds, Swansea) next season???!!!) I just hope we haven't missed the boat. In 2011 I dont want to be watching League 1 football of course whilst still waiting redevelopment of the East Stand

Get Paul Ince in now before someone else gets him. He's a motivator, he has connections, players will sign for him and he makes a team perform. We can then prepare for a proper go at the premiership next season!

Today was yet another shambles,Aidy's changes were absolutely mind boggling.I'm not gonna shout on here saying he should be sacked, cos he should have the balls to go and apologise to Mr Simpson for throwing money away, admitting to making very costly mistakes and finally hand in his resignation.PLEASE!!

Disagrrrrrree with you by saying preparing for the premiership next season....
We have a chance to do that this season still, but not with him at the helm.
Ozzy......Good shout!

Someone find the positives in that today, cos I cant.Strikers were woeful and have been all season. They are the main reason we are in the situation we find ourselves in now!

we havent a hope in hell of scoring enough goals in the play-offs to get us up, and probably that will be a blessing in the end as the premiership would be an embarrasment for us with this team.

Lee is also not up to it so a new goalie is need for next season.

Whether or not it will be a new manager picking the team come August, well only time will tell.

Spiralling ever further down the greasey pole towards Div.1. Relegation form and nothing else.

Yes it was a better performance than Barnsley it could hardly be worse, BUT
we didn't score, had no plan B, and no midfield. Yet another manager comes to the Vic and does a number on us.

Why are we still playing Stewart? Why is AB persisting with O'Toole (promising he may be but its clear he's out of his depth)? Why are we persisting with this dreadful Hoofball game when its ugly to watch and easy to defend against? Why does AB have no plan B? Why did he sub McAnuff, the only player with any semblance of pace, and bring on a defender(moving Stewart to right mid? Why give NE just 3 minutes on the pitch?

Are AB and Malky just doing suduko during the match?

Why does anyone think this team is anywhere near promotiom material, when it is rapidly resembling a shambolic sunday side?

Answers....because Hoofroyd has totally lost the plot and almost certainly the dressing room too.

Anyone got Billy Davies telephone number to pass on to Graham Simpson?

I got to the game half an hour late and left early. This was another terrible performance.

Why was Smith playing so deep? Boothroyd seems to enjoy playing his players out of position. The border between genius and insanity is fine and I know which side Boothroyd is on.
Posted by: nb, surrey on 7:11pm Sat 19 Apr 08
Disagree VoR- We have the slimmest chance of going up by some fluke and assuming we make the play-offs. 2 draws might not be enough to get that far! We are on a big low while everyone bar BC are buzzing (freudian). We are not in a healthy position mentally and that will be the proof that will confirm (financials aside) why we should stay in this league. We haven't come out of months of adversity and are a laughing stock to everyone else because we play such bad football. To most WFC fans that's not good enough. Plan B has to be the radical change necessary to get some quality football back in this club - it starts at the top whatever league we're in - and why not Ince? He's been there and done it as a player and is on the up as a manager. There aren't many candidates with that CV that we'd pay out for, and his connections would at least get some decent loan players. Why do you think we don't attract anyone worth having? It's more than money. I think most fans have had enough of the garbage dished up at the Vic regardless of our position. You can't have a negative goal difference at home and expect to go up?

I always try to be positive so here goes.

I was at the game today and it was a much improved performance from the debacle against Barnsley and we certainly didn't get the breaks.

Scoring goals is becoming a real problem and is why we are struggling. That said, I thought Hendo did well, worked really hard and was unlucky with the ruled out goal, but could've done with more support.

The decision to take off McAnuff & put Stewart on the right was simply amazing, and why wait until the 86th minute to bring on Ellington?
Just plain crazy!

I do hope the comment Aidy made about bringing on late subs to qualify for appearance money was a joke, but somehow I fear it might not be.

Heh ho, Win next week and we're in Playoffs!

Right now I am not even sure if we are going to get into the playoffs. We need to win one more game to be sure but with our inability to score a goal, let alone goals I sense a real feeling of panic, lack of direction and serious loss of confidence. Momentum and spirit can take you along way in the playoffs but I don't think we have either right now and I really don't think we deserve to go up anyway, as much as I do love this club. Crazy tactical decisions that are leaving us all bemused. Awful, again.
Posted by: henry, oxhey on 8:43pm Sat 19 Apr 08
In sum we weren't outplayed by Palace but, of course, we can't seem to score. Palace have the bullying mentality now ( ironic eh?)- JM must be counting his bruises.
Next week. We are not the form team !!! SC. have 10 pts from last ten games - we have 9 so let's not
kid ourselves that we have a right to beat them. They will be playing for pride - so should we after all that has happened since October.
We need to get the old drummer back(pay him if necessary)and get our positive end of Premiership season mentality back.
AB needs to show some courage. Is RL better than MP in goal ?? Try NE and SK up front and tell em to run themselves into the ground for a half and then get two of CJ/TP/DH on with a rocket up the b..........
Try something different - none of our midfield and forwards are match fit because they can't score a goal. Reconsider the players you've written off.
Go for it you 'orns !!!!!.

You sad sad lot. Yeah lets sach Aidy with two games left and us about to go into the play offs!!

You mention laughing stock we sure would be then.

Have you considered what sort of message that would send out just as we go into the play offs?.

Ok so we didn't make automatic but we will make the play offs and then its a lottery you never know.

Get real please there is no way we can sack our manager now. Oh and another thing where are all these ready replacements desperatly waiting to take over? lets have soem names guys!!

We need to see what happens come the end of the season if we don't make it you can all have Aidy's head!

But for now the team need our help we need to go into the play offs with unity.

One more thing we played well today. We could have been three up before they scored. But we didn't take our chances. Strike force is not good enough but we are stuck with it.

please please try and support the team guys one last push five games till the promised land!!

Steve W, nice post. WFC fans can get no more fickle than we've seen over the week and a half on this site since the Barnsley debacle.

my friend got married today and i lent out my season ticket so i am only going on what i've read.

we know the front men have trouble scoring but at the same time TS, DS or even JJ could get the single goal we need to beat Scunthorpe and get in to play-offs.

i will happy clap next week in the front row but can't imagine we can get thru the play offs.

i have a question. apart from hypothesising that no footballer would want to play the way Betty asks, is there any real evidence that he has lost the dressing room?

i don't want him sacked but the comments i read from him after the game do lend credence to the argument that he is the David Brent of the championship.

Some of us refuse to allow our club to sleepwalk into destruction. Look at our form in the last half of the season, project it into next season and what do you get?

Do you have confidence in Boothroyd correcting our performance? Has he show any signs that he can turn things around? Are you willing to risk our survival on his past rather than current achievements?

Ask yourself what we should do if we make the playoffs and son go up? Are you happy to keep this man at the helm?

JohnBoy,
Go up or not, I don't want him at the helm.
He has been rumbled, pure and simple...the tactics, use of Basset, ludicrous spin, etc etc. How he has got away with signing Kabba, NE and CJ, I will never know. Then he bleats he has little money! It must be self delusion, because no-one else is swallowing it. GS must be pretty pi**ed off, becuase he has allowed Hoofroyd to spend millions. Why did Warnock sell Kabba to a rival, and similarly WBA with NE? They saw us coming thats why. I can't believe this did not cross AB and Ashton's minds. This is not wise after the event because I said the same at the time. If we do go up, seize the opportunity and get rid of him. If we don't we probably couldn't afford the compensation. Catch 22! Hope for promotion and petition GS to make a brave decision.

Calls for Boothroyd to be sacked are not rational--but when were football fans ever rational? In truth Boothroyd has done well for Watford in keeping us from relegation, securing promotion, driving us to a semi-final, overseeing an honourable season in the Premiership and keeping us in the top 6 of this division all season. Not bad for a rookie manager. Where he is failing is in his management of the crisis of poor performances and poor results since November. This is because he has not adequately replaced the key figures from the earlier successful sides notably Young, King, Foster, Spring. And this is because he overestimated his own ability to rehabilitate the careers of Ellington, John and Ashikodi ("we are the Priory of football.." ) as he had done with King and Carlisle. Instead these replacemets mostly turned out to be unreformable and poorly motivated. Subsequently in the vital forward positions we look weak. In fairness some of his other transfers look good value e.g. Bromby. I predict we will fail to gain promotion via the play-offs, Boothroyd will stay, and we will be having this conversation again next season, which will be O.K Unlike some, I am confident Boothroyd will learn from all this , and we will have a substantially new team next season, built around young talent like Robinson, Parkes, o'Toole, and it will be a successful season.

Its Over. A point from Scunthorpe and a loss at Blackpool will see us in 8th place. Seems that Adam Johnson returned to Middlesborough was the catylst for the slide and the inexplicably poor home form. Isn't there an advantage to playing at home?

Arent many of us sick and tired of the worn out sayings, "we created loads of chances and should have won x-Nil."

I have tried not to slate AB but his signings have been woeful. What happens if we do go up. The promotion money is not enough to get the quality in the squad we would need. If Fulham/birmingham/Re

ading went down and we went up, what sort of price would they want for McBride/Healy/Jerome

/Kitson/Doyle ? You can bet silly money and these are strikers have not been prolific (ok McBride missed a lot of the season). The reason I mention these is that these are the sort of players we would look at. O.K NE will go, most probably to Derby as has been hinted by Jewell, but that money would only buy us the quality of Earnshaw.

We are probably looking at a year or two in the Championship as before and building a team around up and coming players like we did we Young. Warnock has bled a lot of youngsters this season and they look a good bet to go up.

If AB is to stay he better do some homework to in order to have a plan A,B and C cos at present he has only got Plan "god knows".

We only need to stay in 5th - On current form Hull will be 3rd - i reckon Crystal Palace would beat Hull over two legs. All we would then need to do is beat Bristol over 2 legs and then Palace at Wembley. Simple really! while everyone focusses on the strikers, the main problem for me is the midfield 4. Mc Anuff does not produce enough end product. On Saturday neither £4,000 a week O'toole or Eustace got the ball out to Smith or McAnuff. Remember the fans virtually sacked Mahon in the run up to the transfer window. Yet he did get the ball out to the wings. I personally think williamson and Eustace would be a better pairing. I would try Kabba or ainsworth as a replacement for (he has never won a play off) McAnuff. Or even Williamson O'Toole and Eustace as a 3 with 3 forwards from Smith, Henderson, Priskin or Kabba. Frankly ellington (unless he takes a mean penalty)and Collins John might as well go on holiday now. I think the squad should know, barring injuries who the 16 will be for the next two games and the playoffs. In a strange way the team can now relax as they are a long way off being one of the top 3 in this division. And therefore anything now is a bonus. Lets just hope the management were wise enough to have a wage reduction written into the contracts if we fail to get promotion this year.

...God how I miss Mahon.

Compared to our midfield now he seems like a bloody luxury.

Facing Palace at Wembley?? I only see one winner there. We have a poor strike force and a poor goalie. Palace dont.

Has anyone twigged that the 2 candidates for automatic promotion have very experienced goal keepers. Nash for instance has been around the block many times and has seen it all before. RL hasnt and to be honest is too small.

I seriously would put POOM in for the remainder of the season.

Forgot to say that Nash, who I realise deputises for Simonsen, from what I recall has never had a bad game against us. On loan to Stoke from Wigan? I'd snap him up ASAP. Stoke Keepers in the past have not let us down!!.

If not I have to go with Poom, RL second goal against Palarse was not the first boo-boo he has made this season...remember Charlton at home..appaling!

Ref Richard Lee; time for some balance! At WBA he kept us in it as he's done in several games. What good will it do to bring Poom into the last 2 (hopefully 5) matches of the aseason? You're just adding a change that's not required.

We need a stronger central midfield; JE & LW seem best-able to keep the ball in our possession with simple passing. JJO'T is one for the future in a more confident team when he's allowed to get forward.
I'm not sure now's the time to try 4-3-3 or even 4-2-4 unless we have to go & win a game; that's where you need options on the bench to change the style. And that's where I believe we've been lacking this season; nothing different when required.

WFC and proud. Yep youre right on reflection maybe a change is not so good at the moment. I'm just clutching at straws to find a positive way to get us out of the predicament.

I just want to see some change as the team appears to be going constantly backward and not at all enjoyable to watch.
