It has seemed almost impossible for most of the season, but Watford's fate will all come down to the last day of the campaign after another Vicarage Road horror show saw them lose 1-0 to already-relegated Scunthorpe United and blow the opportunity to secure a play-off place this afternoon.
Bereft of any belief, urgency, composure and quality the Hornets rarely looked like making it a third win in 16 home outings, and Iron had already threatened to score before Paul Hayes did exactly that midway through the second-half.
Almost incredibly, Watford remain in fifth place but results elsewhere mean there will be five teams gunning for the last two play-off places next Sunday and with current form firmly against them, Aidy Boothroyd faces a massive task to lift his beleaguered troops for the trip to Blackpool.
Boothroyd was forced into one change from the side that lost to Crystal Palace, with Jay DeMerit returning to the starting line-up in place of the injured Leigh Bromby.
Injuries to Jim Goodwin (hamstring) and Martin Paterson (hernia) also forced Iron boss Nigel Adkins' selection hand following the 3-2 victory over Cardiff City, and they were replaced by Ian Morris and Ben May.
The Hornets had the first sight of an opening inside the second minute when John-Joe O'Toole played in Tamas Priskin down the inside right channel, but his pull back was behind Darius Henderson.

However, it was the visitors, deploying a fluid 4-4-2 formation, who had the first attempt two minutes later, but Morris' speculative attempt from 25 yards was high and wide. But the home side went closer soon after when a Jobi McAnuff corner from the right picked out the unmarked Dan Shittu at the far post. He headed towards the target but the ball struck O'Toole with his back to goal in the six-yard box, and the young Irishman was unable to pick out a team-mate thereafter.
By the tenth minute the Hornets had already amassed four corners, but within the space of sixty seconds both keepers were perhaps fortunate to get away with complete mis-kicks when attempting to clear their lines.
The game then went flat for a period until the 19th minute when Watford could easily have been punished. Jack Cork scuffed a shot from 20 yards but the ball broke nicely for Paul Hayes in space on the edge of the box, but the striker tried a curling shot and only succeeded in hitting it straight at Richard Lee.
Watford were soon back on the attack though, with Tommy Smith attempting to pick out Priskin and Henderson with a cross from the right and the ball ran through to the left side of the area where McAnuff struck a first-time effort over the top.
Priskin then became the first player to see yellow after catching Izzy Iriekpen with his elbow while challenging for the ball, only for the Hornets to then almost create their own downfall after 26 minutes when complete confusion between Lee and Lloyd Doyley nearly let in Jonathan Forte, but the pair managed to rescue the situation between them.
After another lifeless period Watford had another opportunity in the 36th minute when an over-hit Shittu cross from the right was played back in from the opposite side by McAnuff, but Smith wasn't able to get enough on the ball from inside the six-yard box and keeper Joe Murphy claimed.
May fired straight at Lee from 20 yards at the other end but two minutes before the break the home side had another half-chance. After being fouled on the left edge of the area, McAnuff played in a low free-kick which was blocked and sat up for O'Toole, but his follow up was also blocked.
The visitors were forced into a change into the last minute of normal time in the first-half when Matthew Sparrow came on for the injured Kevan Hurst., but that was it at the end of one of the dullest halves at Vicarage Road for some time, except for the predictable chorus of boos at the whistle.
Watford started the second period with greater urgency, and within 60 seconds of the restart O'Toole's low cross from the left sat up nicely for Henderson, but his well-struck effort was blocked.
Soon after though, more confusion - this time between Lee and Jordan Stewart following a Forte cross - led to a corner for the visitors, and from the set-piece Forte was able to work a shooting opportunity on the left side of the area and fizzed the ball narrowly wide of the diving Hornets' keeper's right-hand post.
There were more alarm bells ringing in the home defence moments later when Hayes picked out the unmarked Sparrow, but the substitute's first touch was poor and he fired wide. However, Iron then forced a corner and Morris' set-piece from the right picked out May, who was totally unmarked at the far post, and really should have at least hit the target, but he headed wide.
Still the visitors kept pushing, with a Stewart mistake allowing Hayes to cross from the right, but the delivery was just too high for Forte, who had to stretch to head wide.
Boothroyd decided he'd seen enough on the hour and made a double change, with Lionel Ainsworth and Nathan Ellington replacing Priskin and McAnuff - the latter clearly unimpressed at being taken off.
But it was the visitors who still looked the more likely to make the breakthrough, with Morris seeing a shot deflected wide of Lee's left-hand post.
The introduction of Ainsworth provided a spark though, and in the 67th minute he produced the moment of the match so far. Picking up the ball wide on the left, the live-wire substitute attacked in-field, beating four of five defenders before seeing his shot from the edge of the area deflected behind.
Within a minute though, the Hornets were heading for another home disaster. Forte crossed from the left and Hayes got in at the near post to beat Lee and give the relegated side a 1-0 advantage.
It could have been worse soon after when Morris beat Doyley on the right before attacking the Hornets area, getting to the by-line and sending in a cross which Lee had to claw away.
Watford sought a response, with Ellington's shot from the edge of the area repelled by an excellent block from Iriekpen, and then the replacement headed a deep Smith cross from the right back across the target and wide.
The Hornets started to build up a head of steam with the last five minutes of normal time approaching as chants of You're not fit to wear the shirt' started to be heard from the Rookery, only to be drowned out by a chorus of Yellow Army'.
Forte made way for Peter Winn with three minutes remaining, and then Curtis Weston was introduced for Hayes, but at the final whistle there was loudest and most sustained chorus of boos directed at the Hornets boss so far, although this was followed by some applause.

AB said the goals would come and they have (just in the wrong goal). How can we play Scunthorpe and not even manage to get a single shot on target. This is more than embarrasing.

Please, all you clappers, all those who have stayed positive through the recent crap, and all those who keep telling us we only need to turn it round for 6/5/4 etc games . . .
Isn't today the final straw?
Isn't being beaten at home by a team relegated ages ago a humiliation too far?
Isn't failing to have a single on-target goal attempt (stats from the club's own site) in such a massive match a crime?
Isn't it flipping obvious we just ain't good enough to go up, don't deserve to go up and probably won't go up?
In fact, if the likes of Scunthorpe and Barnsley can beat us in the manner they have, do we really want to go up?
So, please, let's cut to the chase.
Yes, we're still fifth. Yes, we can still reach the play-offs. Yes, we could still go up.
But when you witness the new depths of utter shame, embarrassment and humiliation which we sank to today, is that really what you want?
One more game Boothroyd. Then thanks for everything and good luck.

How can you categorically deny there hgave been no discussions about a takeover, then confirm there have been, and get away with it?
How can MA keep on saying he is 'driving the club forward', when we have blown all this money...nearly £50m, and are now sinking into debt?
How does AB justify remaining as manager?
I hope they are ashamed of the joke we have become.
AB justifies the awful tactics and style on lack of money (not true), and because winning is what matters (err...how many wins).
Someone please liberate my club.

Stewart - a player who is leaving the club and has no interest in what happens next season, so why play him!?
Ainsworth - a player with speed and ball control who can excite and create - why has he not had a look in!?
Eustace / Smith - players who ran and ran today and tried their all, but seriously let down by everyone else. JJOT - one or two good passes in a match do not justify your performance!
Boothroyd - someone who has lost anything he had: clueless.
Fans - fighting with each other... what has happened to my club?

What a miserable lot you all are! We're improving! We lost 3-0, then 2-0, now only 1-0. Chances are we'll probably come away from Blackpool with 0-0. Problem is that this won't get us into the playoffs, judging by the way Crystal Palace and Wolves are playing. Problem? NO. At least it might spell the end of Boothroyd. Otherwise the Board might find yet another excuse to keep him.

Yes we could go up, but frankly at this stage I am more worried about our competitiveness next year in the Championship - The team had no guile, heart or self belief. I fear it is now going to be either a new manager & coaches or new squad - the current first team and coaching staff have failed this season, not sure how they can turn it around

No doubt this management will find positives in todays fiasco, for the rest of us embarrassed supporters it has gone too far.No passion, no plan, no enterprise, no guts and worst not an iota of skill to be seen from the guys in yellow.Yellow army sums it up succinctly!i suspect the players have been told they will be fined if they pass the ball on the ground to each other, how else can professional coaching yield such pub football quality. The manager tells us the squad is better than the one that last gained promotion,he must be on an illegal substance. We need proper watford guys in charge John Ward (as GT wanted) and maybe KJ and Luther to teach us how to shoot.

What have we got to do to get rid of AB? If we stay in the Chumpionship and AB somehow stays, then he won't go until we vote with our feet and stop going to The Vic. That's the only way the Board will ever listen to us fans.

Another sad, sad afternoon at the Vic. On consecutive Saturdays l have seen our own supporters fighting amongst themselves.
On the pitch it has been a repetition of the same dross that we have been subjected to since the return of Johnson to Middlesborough.
I don't boo the team, the manager or abuse individual players but l am tired of watching inadequate players, many of whom lack even a semblance of passion produce the boring repetetive rubbish that we have been subjected to.
In nearly 40 years of following 'our' club l struggle to recall anything quite as dire as we have produced this season.
For me it was summed up with about a minute of normal playing time left. A free kick from the right, half way inside the Scunthorpe half, and a full back strolls over to take it, in a manner which suggested there was an hour left to play, not one minute!!!
Needless to say, waht followed was another high, poorly delivered ball whcih produced absolutely nothing.
Get rid of most of these overpriced, overpaid, pathetic excuse for players. Most of my 16yr old sons Sunday side could produce more quality and passion than this rubbish.

GS looked totally bereft today whilst his beloved WFC and his under fire manager AB played out one of the most toothless displays for years.
Heres a club in discussion about a takeover, when the price will escalate IF we were to be promoted.
Heres a team totally bereft of any belief, movement, passion, ability, skill or anything near resembling a team challenging for promotion, but just going through the motions.
And then there is the manager. Clueless, yet again taking off our most mobile player JMcN, whilst leaving the apprentice JJT on to the embarrassment of all. There was no positive midfield runners, no diagonal runs from the statuesque front pairings. We couldn't score if we were playing for the next 30 consecutive saturdays. Our midfield play was shambolic and the blame lies with AB.
Come on GS, face facts, bite the bullet, and get rid of this man who's credentials are falling faster by the week than home attendances. His time has passed, so move on.....please.

Congratulations to Scunthorpe three well deserved points to the footballing team.
Respect to Aidy for facing up to the crowd at the end.
Shame on those supporters who booed JS before the game and got on the teams backs during the game.
Questionable those supporters who chant Aidy's name during the game.
As for the team NE played a little football in flashes, LLoyd was good Jobi Tommy and LA tried even JS was ok but Darius, Tamas,JJ and JE were awful. Richard Lee the new hero made far too many mistakes and underlined that he is one of the worst goalies in the division. Our two front men were not such a handful..they messed up big time and threatened the relegated sides goal so often I cant recall one effort.
We have now recently played two of the bottom three sides at home and whatever the Sage man says Darius may give 100% but he is 100% ineffective.
The tactice were awful and I wont hold my breathe for the playoffs cos if we play Hull we are likely to be highly embarrassed.
I wish I could explain why this has all unfolded in the last five/six months but we are now being outplayed by the divisional strugglers and the lads wear the shirt with little or no pride. The most purposeful moment in watching Darius is when he strode off down the tunnel...he isnt the same man i watched for the first two and a half seasons.
I wish mr simpson well over the next few months as I fear his job , if he remains in control, might be very unpleasant with many hard decisions to be made. I wont call for Aidy to go because I am not sure if he is inept or just in need of a chance to recharge his batteries
See you all in Blackpool and please lets have a huge turnaround of fortune.

Having fallen completely out of love with Aidy this season, his appearance on the pitch immediately after the final whistle – firstly to shake hands with the officials and then to applaud what remained of the fans – reawakened something in me. In fact, terrible as things are, I predict we will win comfortably at Blackpool and go on to get promoted via the play offs at Wembley.
Off for a w**k while listening to Z-Cars now….

Was not able to be there today, although from listening to the reports it was the worst yet.
However, I've supported Aidy & the team throughout the season and I'm not going to change my position at this late stage.
Clearly he lost sections of the dressing room some way back and has really struggled to handle this and the weight of expectations
,unlike 2 seasons ago when he was the confident & bright new kid on the block that kept us all riding on the crest of a wave.
I'm not sure he can rediscover this in a week, but I hope we win at Blackpool and give a good account of ourselves in the playoffs to end the season on a better note than the current.
But whatever happens there is a need for some major changes to our players & approach. The Chemistry just isn't working at the moment.
I wouldn't write Aidy off; he will have learned a lot from this season and can come good again. However I acknowledge that things may have gone too far for this to be with us.
But if this is the case, I will always appreciate the job he did to save us from relegation and take us into the Prem 2 & 3 seasons ago. Magnificent.

Wasn't at the match, instead I spent the morning reffing my local U 10s, god they play some good football at that level.
Spent the pm following WFC on the internet - what a waste of an afternoon. I can't comment on the game, but when I saw the team at 2.45 I thought there was no way we were going to score. I read that Aidy had the team in the dressing room for an hour after the game - it's a bit late for that, 3 months too late in my opinion. The players have lost their bottle. Jobi may be one of the most creative players, but he has lost his bottle in front of goal. The team as a whole have lost any self-belief, especially at home, and the selections lack courage and ambition. There is one player on form who should at least be given a chance, even if starting on the bench, and that is Liam Henderson. After Blackpool, or the play offs if we get there, there needs to be some serious work done behind the scenes, but ranting about it now is not going to help the cause that is Watford FC.

I was ashamed to be a Watford fan today. Not because of what went on on the pitch but the performance of my fellow 'fans'. My cousin summed it up by saying there are 3 sets of fans at Vicarage Road these days. Those supporters that support and those who come along to boo, jeer and turn the atmosphere into a pantomime. If you think this helps your team you're sadly mistaken. If I was a Watford player I would dread any home game at the moment. Who wants to step out onto the pitch when you're getting abused by your own 'fans'? Would you be able to do a decent job if you're boss was always shouting how useless you are at you? Do you expect Stewart to be able to take a decent free kick when you boo him just as he's about to take it?
I can't wait for this season to be over. Yes, the football is nervy, full of errors and lacking in focus but I doubt some fans realise the role they play in boosting their team rather than demoralising them.
I'm sickened but not surprised by the fighting. We used to have a good set of fans who acted more or less as one, a good atmosphere, a family club etc. This is being lost due to a section of fans hellbent on berating the team.
The idiots in the upper rouse who verbally abused Simpson as he walked up the steps would do well to remember that without him this club probably wouldn't exist now, let alone avoid relegation, win the play offs, get to a cup semi final and get into the play off again (we hope) in 4 seasons.
God knows what the away fans must think when they come to the Vic at the moment. It's embarrassing that our own fans seem to hate their own team/manager/chairma
n etc. What if we get to Wembley? Will the boo boys still insist on putting on a show? Why do people even bother going to a match when their only intention is to wreck their own team's performance? We are a disgrace, a laughing stock and pathetic but that's down to what's going on in the stands, not on the pitch.

Yes, the football is nervy, full of errors and lacking in focus but I doubt some fans realise the role they play in boosting their team rather than demoralising them. I'm sickened but not surprised by the fighting. Ian You make a number of very valid points. I wasn't at the match today so I can't really comment on specifics. But I think that you have to ask why the friendly family atmosphere has changed. And to my mind it is simple - the club has changed. Under Simpson, Ashton and Boothroyd essential values have been discarded. Since Lewington was unceremoniously dumped despite his efforts and success in helping save the club in the most trying circumstances, people have been treated disrespectfully and unfairly. This applies to staff, and certain players. Added to that, the club is at odds with the local paper, continuously spins any news, cannot withstand any criticism, shuts down the site's message boards and treats its supporters like morons. Any wonder that some of the more moronic then act accordingly. And the so called football this year has been appalling, no entertainment, no passion, little skill and baffling tactics from the manager whose purchases have so often been woeful.Treat the fans with some respect, deal with the issues with some honesty, show loyalty to those that have genuinely helped the club. How can Simpson say that he doesn't talk to the Russo's. He was happy to take their money and take them on board but fell out when they were critical of the mangement. Now he doesn't talk to them - that is pathetic. So, in summary, the club have created the atmosphere - now let them sort it out quickly before it is too late to reverse.

Have never booed at a Watford player in my life, but must admit after last few games have gone away very disappointed. Football is not the game it was when we stood on the open terrace at the Vicarage Road end getting soaked. There is too much money in it both in wages and admission charges. People pay their money and are entitled to their opinion, but I agree that barracking the team will not work. However, if players are not making effort saying jolly good show, chaps is not going to help. We all think we could do better - that's what fans do, but we do not get paid £s to kick around a bit of leather for a living. Too many egos both on and off the pitch and too much quality has been allowed to go likewise.

im still confused as to how we can have money problems.sold young 9m,bouazza 4m,and king 2. plus 20million from sky. even taking into account the money we owed and players wages and ellington, seems very strange to me,and feels like the vialli days part 2,or maybe i cannot add up.

I think it risible that anyone can complain about the supporters. The crowd gave the team every support, even when we went a goal down. Yet again I left early because I can only stomach so much dross.
If we even attempted to play football and got beaten then fair enough but the team don't even try.
Well done Scunthorpe, we'll be playing you 2009/2010 if Boothryod is still here.

Jb, old fellow,I must say that a dastardly cove near me booed when Jordan stewart was announced on the line up!
not really cricket What? but then I confess to using intemperate language to the chap(was a bit weedy, may have been Colin)
Actually I thought Jordan did pretty well, but I did use some unpleasant comments towards the Manager and some of the players after the game myself, but crikey,I mean I think that I may be faster than that Eustace chappy!

Tringhornet - much as it pains me to stand up for JS, when the freekick was given with a few minutes left the ref told the players they had to wait for the Scunthorpe substitution.

with nothing less than a victory needed at blackpool to ensure we make the play off's adie boothroyd must pick the best 11 players available.
poom,doyley,shittu,b
romby,sadler,smith,w
illiams,eustace,mcan
uff, ellington & henderson and with ainsworth and kabba on the bench at least we can bring on players with pace.if adie won't risk gareth williams this season then why not play smith behind the strikers in a diamond with ainsworth on the right

on the training ground, can they get mcnuff to run down the touch line, run as far as the bye line and cross the ball. for winger he is the worst crosser ive seen in my life. do it all day long for 5 days (and nothing else) until you have perfected the art of crossing the ball, rather than hitting the first man in his stomach evrytime.its a total joke.esepcially if we have henderson in the box!

Its simple guys...98/99 players who played for the shirt ...05/06 players who played for the shirt...07/08 a couple of players who play for the shirt and the rest who are only here for the money...thank god the season is nearly over and we cab get rid off a whole bunch of useless money grabbing one handed lovers and get John Ward in to sort out this mess..this club needs people who love it and understand it and wont waste the pot of gold

Oh Dear,
Just read Chris the Vic`s usual anti Lee & Henderson bias!
Total tommy rot in my view!
Twisting facts to suit bias is a Colin type trait.
taking Lee out would make us more vulnerable, leaving Henderson out would make us even less effective.
I fear Chris sits down to his geography examination determind to answer questions on Mathematics!

I agree Henderson and Lee not the problem. In fact henderson has looked less effectie since the team has entrenched itself into just bashing the ball in the air. Henderson scored great goals in his first season when king or Young fed the ball to his FEET! The poor fella is competitive and prepared to put himself about, but I am sure he would be delighted to play a different way with passes from the wings on the ground! I think that Eustace looked slow as if he was carrying an injury. I would put williamson in place of O'Toole simply because he has a little more experience, although I think O'toole is more positive running into the opposition goal area. The big question is who is able to ply up front. The balls over the top is not getting goals, so lets get the midfield to play differently and see if Henderson and 1 other (I personally would go for Kabba, because when I saw him away he put in a good effort) at Blackpool. If passing the ball fails in the first half well go back to hoofing it up to big Dan - This after seems to be the only output from Boothroyds pile of coaching badges.

If AB goes then we should get JW in, although he has not had a great time in his last 4 matches. Too many players seem to be unconcerned that they are not being selected, so that says a lot about what they want from WFC. I don't want us to sack AB, but I do want him to have a Director of Football or strong No 2 to work with him. If he does go then that is a different matter and JW would be my first choice. The pride does not seem to be there this year - but then so many of the players are relatively new recruits and don't have any history with us.

It always amazes me how some people seem to think that those that boo at the end of games are not supporters. As a season ticket holder who signed up immediatly again for next season, I have the right to sing, cheer, boo or encourage my team.
Although I personally never pick on individuals, at the end of the game I feel I have the right to express my views on what I have just PAID to watch. Unfortunately for the last few home games my expression has been that to boo.
For those happy clappers who then verbally abuse those that boo, and despite woeful performances they then stand and applaud the team & manager off the pitch, can I ask how the team can tell the difference in your reaction to their performance, if you happily clap at every game? What do you do when the lads play brillaintly, clap just the same, thus indicating there is no difference in your oppinion to a bad display and a good one?
Fans fighting amongst each other is not the answer, nor is abusing each other's opinion, but all fans have the right to cheer or boo. I think the WFC supporters have been very loyal, supportive and patient this season, as always. I've been to a number of grounds where passionate fans are screaming for the manager and board to be sacked after two or three defeats. I think us 'Orns are pretty supportive in general, but allow us the right to boo if we feel it necesary to express our opinion please. (If my performance in my job was at a level of the current team's, my customers would be doing a lot more than boo'ing me!)

Chrissyboy ... so you must be saying that your expectations at the start of this season were automatic promotion - hence you can boo the team?
If you said to your boss. Its going wron g- but i'm working on a plan to get us where we should be .... do you think he should boo you every time you leave the office or worse ... every time you pick up a pen? ... thats hardly going to spur you on now is it!
get real.

Hornetboy 84 - you are correct to a point. But if that plan did not appear to be working and my performance was getting worse week by week, my boss would hardly be applauding me off the premises now would he.
My gripe is, if as a fan I am aloud to support my team, then letting them know that i feel they've done badly, should not be a crime. If my boss at work kept telling me how brilliant I was every time I messed up, that would hardly keep me focused and in touch with the reality of the quality of my work.
My expectations over the last few months were for WFC to play some decent football, entertain the paying customer, show some passion and some technical ability. Instead we appear to be stumbling to the finishing line when at one point during the race we were lengths ahead.
To that point, I do feel the team have let us down recently, and despite supporting them throughout the game, if I feel it reflects their performance I will boo at the end.

Chrissyboy if you think you're not getting value for money you have a right to complain, like you I have bought my next season ticket and I'm not sure if I can stomach another season of home games like this one.

I only can say, as I did last week, we have no forwards to score goals, we have other players just not good enough and they know it. The managers should think about retiring.

Sadly, when we were 9 points clear, I said let's not get carried away. The last time we were relegated from the Premier we went 17 games along with Fulham at the top. We then blew it and finished mid-table. Aidy, I am sure your heart is in the right place but unfortunately your spin is not what we want to hear. Once the Latvian Consortium has taken over I feel it's time to say 'Goodbye' or whatever that is in Latvian. Cheers and Thank You for your efforts.
