A group of Year 10 students found out what it takes to become a top class athlete this week, and how the keys to success in sport can be applied to success in learning and life.

The students from Samuel Ryder Academy, in St Albans, participated in a visit from wheelchair rugby Paralympian Aaron Phipps and BMX world champion Mike Mullen as part of Sky Sports Living for Sport, a nationwide initiative that sends athlete mentors into schools to help motivate students through sport, build confidence and develop valuable life skills.

The students took part in a series of workshops run by the mentors, exploring themes such as mental toughness, hunger to achieve, people skills and planning for success. A practical session in BMX techniques, led very ably by Mike Mullen, proved the highlight of what was an inspiring day for all.

Samuel Ryder Academy’s head of Year 10, Sophie Demain, said: “It was a fantastic experience for everyone involved and a great opportunity to collaborate with one of our partner schools in the Trust.

"The students learned valuable skills, including strategies for understanding that failure is a positive step towards success. We are confident that they will go on to apply these skills, not only in their learning but in life too.”

Year 10 student, Ben Shenton-Smith, said: "The day was motivational for now and later on in life. It was very inspirational and made me want to try my best.”

Fellow Year 10 student, Antonio Spasiano, who was equally enthusiastic: said: “It was inspirational and made me think about my future. When I found out what Aaron had achieved, I thought about what I wanted to achieve.”

Visiting athlete, Mike Mullen, said: “Sky Sports for Living for Sport is a great initiative to be involved in, giving young people the inspiration and confidence to succeed and be whatever they want to be in life.

"We had a fantastic day at Samuel Ryder Academy; the students were a real credit to the school, making a positive contribution to discussions and putting their all into the practical BMX session. Well done to all who participated.”

Samuel Ryder Academy spokesperson, Chris Wright, said: “Visits like these are just some of the many ways that we try and inspire students at the Samuel Ryder Academy so that they leave our care as well rounded individuals who have the confidence and ability to make their mark on the world.”
