Mozart’s Mass in C Minor is the centrepiece of St Albans Choral Society’s concert in the cathedral.

The concert, in which the choir joins forces with Orchestra Nova under conductor George Vass, also features Mendelssohn’s Hebrides overture, popularly known as Fingal’s Cave, and the Schicksalslied (Song of Destiny) by Brahms.

Mozart’s substantial work, also known as the Great Mass, looks back to the glories of the high Baroque, using a double choir, a pair of virtuoso soprano soloists as well as tenor and baritone, and a large orchestra for that time.

The quartet of outstanding soloists for the performance are Daisy Brown, Soprano I (pictured), Elizabeth Cragg, Soprano II, Mark Chaundy, Tenor, and Dominic Sedgwick, Baritone.

The Mass contains some of Mozart’s most awe-inspiring music, even though, like his other choral masterpiece, the Requiem, it remained unfinished at his early death.

The Schicksalslied is one of Brahms’ shorter choral masterpieces, a beautiful work that is a staunch favourite with choirs and audiences. Mendelssohn’s Fingal’s Cave, a popular concert overture, was inspired by a trip to the Hebrides Islands in 1829.
