People are invited to see how far they can hurl a haggis at an annual highland festival.

The Harpenden Lions Highland Gathering will be back for another year at Rothamsted Park, in Harpenden, on Sunday, July 9.

During the day, there will be pipe bands and gymnastic displays, falconry demonstrations, battlefield re-enactments, as well as sheepdogs herding geese and ducklings.

Visitors can also stand on a whisky barrel and throw a 500 gram haggis to try and beat the current world record of 217 feet, set by Lorne Coltart at the Milngavie Highland Games in 2011.

The aim of the day is to raise money for mental health charity Combat Stress, along with children and families charity Kids in Action and the Lions Life Skills programme, which supports PSHE education in local schools.

Incoming Lions president Mohan Cashyap said: “The continuing success of the Harpenden Lions Highland Gathering depends on the help of so many in the local community pulling together through many months of planning to make this day happen.”
