Children have added a spot of colour to a drab wall with the help of a community artist.

Pupils from Mandeville Primary School, Mandeville Drive, St Albans worked with Audrey Montet to create a mural on hoarding at the former King Offa pub, Abbots Avenue in the Cottonmill area.

Audrey, who runs St Albans business Montet Designs, supervised the kids who drew pictures of landmark buildings, flowers and animals on a blue background.

Among the iconic sites depicted were the Veralanium Museum, Sopwell Nunnery, the Cathedral and the nature reserve and adjacent houses in Wallingford Walk.

The budding artists also included the Town Hall in St Peter’s Street which is due to be transformed into a museum and art gallery.

Pupils from St Peter’s Primary School were also involved in the design and creation of the mural, as were residents who took part as part of a community day.

The King Offa is due to be demolished to make way for affordable housing and the work was commissioned by St Albans and District Coucil to brighten up the space for residents and passers-by.

Audrey said: “I was very impressed by the children’s efforts.

“They threw themselves into the task with great energy and enthusiasm, showing considerable artistic talent. They also had a lot of fun.”

Councillor Brian Ellis for housing said: “The building work is likely to take a year or so.

“It’s an important development as it will provide the City with some much-needed affordable homes.

“The mural is a great idea as it gives the site a far more attractive and interesting appearance. I am pleased the children had an enjoyable time helping to create it.”
