Two ladies celebrated turning 100 within two days of each other with bouquet of flowers and a visit from the Mayor.

Ethel Davey celebrated her birthday on Saturday, July 30 close friends and family, but a bigger party was held at her home, the Duchess of Marlborough Almshouse, on Saturday, August 12.

Among the guests were other residents, the Clerk and Trustees from the Almhouse, and along with the Mayor of St Albans City and District Councillor Mohammad Iqbal Zia.

The Mayor presented her with a “Super Trouper” standard rose tree on behalf of all those in attendance.

Ethel is believed to be Britain’s oldest charity shop volunteer, having dedicated her services to the Scope charity shop in Victoria Street, St Albans for the past 21 years, and still has no plans to retire.

Patricia Thomas also met up with family on Sunday, July 30 to celebrate turning 100 the following day.

Cllr Zia attended the party along with other residents at Tenterden House Care Home in St Albans to present her with flowers to celebrate her special day on Monday, July 31.

Cllr Zia, said: “I was honoured to attend Ethel and Patricia’s 100th birthday celebrations and congratulate them on reaching this special milestone.

“It was really interesting talking to both of these wonderful women about their lives and how life in St Albans has changed over the years.”
