A donation page for a family whose father died in a motorcycle crash has reached more than seven times its target.

Darren Thompson, aged 36, from St Albans, was involved in a crash on August 30 when his white Honda motorbike and a grey BMW car crashed at the junction of Acrewood Way and Hatfield Road, where he sadly died at the scene.

After this happened his friends Natasha Standland, Warren Jeggo, and Claire and Lee Hall, set up a crowdfunding page with donations going straight to Darren's family - and within a couple of hours it reached its £2,000 target, and is now at almost £15,000.

Ms Standland, who knew the father-of-three since they were 14, said: "I wanted to do something practical to help, ironically I had only spoken with Darren's partner earlier that day about how expensive bringing up children and life in general is.

"I can't take their pain away, but this money will help the children to have a better future and ease financial strain.

"It feels overwhelming and uplifting to see how many people knew and loved Darren."

Ms Standland, who also is a childminder to Darren's two youngest sons and a friend to his partner, Clare, felt the overwhelming response was a testament to how much people loved Darren.

She added: "Darren was a happy, kind, family man who would do anything for you.

"He was madly in love with his partner Clare and doted on his three lovely boys."

After the incident, Hertfordshire Constabulary released a statement of tribute from Darren's family.

It read: "Darren was a well-loved partner, dad, son, brother and uncle and will be truly missed. His family will always remember him as the fun and free spirit that he always was.

"His memory will live on in the hearts and minds of his family and friends."

Darren's funeral takes place on September 22 at West Herts Crematorium at 1.20pm and is open to anyone who knew him.
