An MP has called for change to a flight path in a letter to an aviation authority.

Anne Main, MP for St Albans, has called on the Civil Aviation Authority to make fundamental changes to the RNAV flight path at London Luton Airport after receiving an "overwhelming" number of complaints from constituents.

Mrs Main said the route, which uses area navigation, has fallen short of its original purpose, which was to reduce the number of people affected by flight noise, which she believes is now a burden on those living within the narrow corridor of the route at all times.

She said: "On a daily basis I read of the frustrations felt by constituents who live directly under the flight path. I entirely sympathise with local residents.

"The problem was nowhere near as pronounced until the introduction of the new paths."

She added that the impact on some residents' mental and physical health has been "alarming".

"Lack of sleep and endless noise have made those affected extremely unhappy. I believe this must be given careful consideration during the CAA’s review of the paths."

Mrs Main suggested an idea for respite periods to give residents rest from the noise and urged the authority to consider this in their upcoming review.
